Needs to be a trend. Please. 4 minutes of exposition and yammering and "previews of coming soon" at the beginning that nobody cares about... this was refreshing.
I think one of the band members said that the kid was inspired how he felt in life sometimes. As an "alien" or an outcast. Althought surrounded by many people, they still feel alienated, which is why the character looks the way it does
I've always interpreted the song's lyrics as inviting the listener to be critical of their own mindset, but when combined with the powerful music, it feels very empowering and uplifting.
See, to me the video and song has the same meaning. It's fame chasing and envy. Everyone abandons everything they gain for the next big thing and then the next. The boy in the video is an alien in settings totally unlike what he should be surrounded by. It represents our desire for fame and fortune and no matter how we try and change ourselves to fit in, we still won't be accepted, but we'll be exploited, represented the photographer at the end. "We're one in the river and one again after the fall." Means to me we're all the same until we let society separate us, but once we fall, we're all back to square one. "Always wanna go but never wanna stay." That me is like another song lyric, "Undending paper chase". We always wanna find the next big hustle or thing and never wanna be happy or settle. We need to find the next vain thing to move to that won't bring us real happiness. "Always wanna play but never wanna lose." Meaning we always wanna take shots and do our best to find the easy way to fame or fortune or love, but never wanna have the repercussions if we fail. Ultimately, it ends with the point we should just accept ourselves and learn we're more than what we are and special regardless and be the best us we can be and find true happiness and don't take it for granted. Not to let society dictate what we SHOULD be.
I've been listening to this song since i was 14 years old, i'm 22 now and i've NEVER looked at this song by that perspective. Your analysis touched me really deep, i relate to pretty much everything that you said about perspectives. You must be a damn good therapist, i wish i could be your client, i feel like i'd learn a lot from you and you could be a great help for this tough time i'm going through. Keep up the good work!
i was 15 im 41 ;) happy to see that the song lives :) I'm also happy that we might one day decipher the lyrics correctly so I can die in peace :P we got no clues until troubled nerds started storming the lyrics... if it's obvious from today's POV that's good news (re-read myself... i was one of those troubled nerds btw)
wow she is amazingly good! I read from someone else that the kid in the video is lost in imagining a better life for himself. He fails at letting his imaginings go and never really makes it to the higher level of consciousness, but we can.
I buried a former classmate and friend of a friend to this song in the late 00s. we werent even that close but i still think of him when i hear this song. he was 18 and died in a motorcycle crash a few weeks after getting his license. the guy in the car that cut the corner and crashed with him was a teacher on my school. all of his family were injured and needed to go to the hospital too. guy was mentally fucked for many years and totally changed after that (understandably). See him do better lately tho.
As a retired counselor and lover of rock for over 60 years, I very much enjoy your approach and attitude. Keep listening and sharing, it never gets old!
Damn your interpretations are tripping me out. I’m a musician so I just normally get off on the music and all that, but holy shite your on the spot interpretations of the lyrics are blowing my mind all over the place. Not my area of expertise at all and it’s totally getting me. Great job.
For sure Truth Scrotum! It’s my favorite song. I’m learning it on the drums. Fuckin love drumming to this song. It never gets boring. Exciting as hell every time
The ‘aerial view’ to me has always been another way of describing enlightenment. Having experienced it myself, how they describe it is unbelievably spot on.
@@Sentient_Rationality good question that goes straight to the heart of the problem. ‘I’ didn’t do anything. That’s kinda what enlightenment is, switching from the doer to the witness. What can ‘I’ do to make that doer disappear? well nothing, because all action comes from that same ‘I’. Enlightenment is losing yourself. How can you lose yourself? You can’t because it’s the end of all self-control. It’s all a complete contradiction. Therefore never trust anyone who says ‘I am enlightened’ because you can’t. Enlightenment is the absence of that same I. It’s not an achievement, it’s more the opposite of an achievement. It’s what you fall into when all achievement comes to an end. Hope this helps.
One of my favorite SOAD songs. I agree with your assessment of the song. From and anarchist perspective, both individualist anarchism and social anarchism both express concern for the individual but social anarchism cautions against "rugged individualism" and that each individual is still part of a whole yet not subordinate to it. We as individuals must not loose sight of everything going on around us.
I just viewed your reactions for the first time and must say - KUDO to you Taylor, respect!! I like your expressions and explanations from a therapists view rather than from a musical opponent. You also do not stop/pause the video unnessary and your wording is on the spot. Keep up the good stuff - Greetings from UK
This is such a great interpretation of the song. I’m going to therapy right now and reminding myself of the bigger picture and that some things don’t work out so that other things can is one of the things I’m working on remembering
Just found you and am loving your reactions. It doesn’t appear as you’ve been turned onto Ren yet. As someone can really dive into mental health and other deep content I think you would find a deep rabbit hole with Ren’s music. The place to start is the song Hi Ren. (Also the way you feel music would make for incredible content with REN’s music)
I usually get pissed off or just laugh when people try to break down soad songs because usually it’s so far off but you do a really good job understanding and breaking them down.. the best part of soad is the open for interpretation and one day you could feel a certain type of way about a song then the next day relate it to something completely different… but I think you definitely relate to what they might have felt or experienced while expressing their music.. but I definitely think it means more to us then what it means to them when pple want an explanation about what they are talking about .. but you are very intelligent and I enjoy listening to your breakdowns on the music!!
I'm a 32 years old man who's lost two opportunities in his life to obtain and coronate his career both times thanks to lack identity papers... I'm not sharing this for pity, attention or some BS, but for being grateful for your insight of the song. I've finished my career according to the University's standards both times but my biggest obstacles have been always my papers to be able to graduate. I'm not an immigrant, I was born in this place, but bureaucracy is not in my favor. I was ready to throw all the hard effort to waste but you've made me think that maybe there's something in the picture that I've not been able to see in all these previous years. Honestly, thanks a lot for your work, it reaches more souls than you think. Thank you for giving me hope when I was ready to give up. Greetings and a big thankful hug. PS: Sorry for any mistakes folks, but English is not my first language. I'm not from USA or UK.
Your perspective is just on spot. I think you are perfect therapist and your intelligence speaks about your perfect underatanding on how the world actually works. Thank you very much and keep up a good work 💎 ❤
Killswitch Engage "I am broken too" deals with so many mental health issues. Make Them Suffer "Erase me" is another great song with meaningful lyrics. I'll be patiently waiting 😂
Im a big big KSE fan,i suffered from depression and suicidal thoughts,i was in a bad phase at one time,my father died,i had a long covid and my wife wanted to get divorce,i listened a lot to i am broken too, then i got better, then my mom died... I wanted to kill myself for months, now im a little better but it's still hard, the day after tomorrow it's her 1 year death anniversary, and my birthday too,yup she died on my birthday...
The waterfall line i always attribute it to life and death. Like everyone starts at the river stage that's when we are born, but life is unfair when in the waterfall stage, but death equates us all again at the end of the fall.
New fan here. I love how you get so into the music and you really pick some bangers to react to. My suggestion would be to react to a song called Nemo by a band called Nightwish. Maybe a more mainstream suggestion would be Disturbed's reason to fight. It got me through some hard times. God bless, and all the success in the world to you.
This song always felt like experiencing the difference between the big picture perception and the self(centered) perception and how you feel yourself when you aren’t so tied up in YOU and open to experiencing the world as a whole being that you are a small fraction of this larger sum!! Be mindful and you’ll see the changes your actions and words ripple out..
Well put, although I'd say that It'd be a whole lot cooler hearing Miss cutie pants say it 😂.. That sounded so much funnier whatever my mind had come up with initially using part of Matthew Mcconaughey's line in Dazed and Confused..
First time i hear this song make me realize that i narrow thinking guy. I should embracing a broader worldview, be open minded, be sensitive, be positive minded and embracing the present moment.
In an interview I believe Daron explained that this song was about a boy in a wheelchair who went to see a circus. When the boy saw the performers soaring through the air on aerials (aerial silks), he wanted to be just like them when he grew up even though he knew it would never happen.
so im going to bare my soul a little bit...system of a down has been one of my favorite bands since i was a teenager and im 36 now. Their music connected to me in a way that allowed me to express myself and allow me to feel comfortable in my own skin not just their lyrics but the overall progression of each song and how it added to the album. when i was younger my stepdad molested me and my sisters and ive always struggled with anger issues and respecting people in authority that i felt didnt deserve it. once i found this band linkin park limp bizkit etc when i was younger turned me to music so i started playing the drums. it became how i released my anger my aingst my frustrations with the world its such controlled chaos its beautiful. i still cling to music til this day when i feel a certain way or i cant catch my breath and im about to lose my mind i listen to metal its so calming in a strange way but its the control in the chaos that just allows my heart to slow back to normal like all is right and wheres its supposed to be...im not sure if i should be saying any of this but id rather someone read this and know that theyre not alone if they struggle the way i do
From Micro: @andrewdixon4252 You are absolutely welcome to share all of this here, friend. Regardless of how much or how little you feel comfortable sharing, this space and channel are designed exactly for this. So rest assured that there is no shame, no judgment, no guilt for the fact that you've posted about your story and about things that are meaningful for you. It's actually an honor and privilege to get to know you like this! And it's even more inspiring that you share this with the hope that it could encourage others. It definitely helps to know that there are other people who may have been through the same, and to realize that the pain we experience does not define us, even less our worth. At a personal level, there are things in your comment that I relate with. I was sexually abused at different times of my life, by different people, and while finally starting to processing the impact it had on me during the last couple of years - or coming out of this kind of state of forgetfulness and numbness - music has been such a powerful outlet as well. You've mentioned LP - their music saved me from very dark times and definitely made me feel heard/understood, as well as if my anger was finally justified. Hearing someone screming out their own pain and verbalizing things we wish we could shout to the person who have hurt us... that's so cathartic. And it's healthy after all. Good release of emotions, and no harm to us or someone else. It creates a beautiful, intense but supportive chaos somehow. I can only imagine the journey you've been through having experienced the trauma of molestation and the impact it has on the trust you can then have (or not) for others. It shakes your world in ways that seem too deep and too complex to convey into words. The loneliness that being victim of sexual abuse creates still shakes me at my core - and I'm sorry you've experienced that yourself. No one should ever have hurt you. No one should have even though about it. So I hope you can keep exploring this anger - and any other emotion that may arise - in ways that keep *serving* you moving forward. For you deserve to live life in which you would feel a new, well-deserved type of peace within. You have been through hell and back, and even though you didn't mention it explicitely, I wish to acknowledge how much your efforts, to make it through the darkest and challenging times of trauma recovery, are seen right now. It takes a lot of courage to push through, to name what happened, and even more to speak about it openly as you did here. Shame, guilt, self-blame don't not belong here. What I see through your post is a brave, resilient human being who has a majestic force within - especially through embracing their own vulnerability. May the sound of drums and music keep fulfilling your heart, as well as helping your body and mind feeling grounded to the present. You are without a doubt forging a meaningful path for yourself. If you ever need to talk or just a shoulder to lie on at times, the Heartsupport community will be present. You too, you are not alone my friend. Hold fast.
I have a personal experience that, I think, can simplify the concept: My 1st job was in a very collaborative environment, in a very populated city. There I learned when the place and the people around you grow, evolve, you will to. Now, living in a very small city, where this concept should be easier to notice, people act in a way to get advantages from the government without having need and/or attending the conditions required, spending the resources that could help someone else in real "need". Or, doing harm (not in a violent way or something like that) to another, just because some disagreement or antipathy... So, the consequence, is that everyone (in average) is always getting worse, the things, instead evolve, walk backwards.
Bands recommended: The Warning and Jinjer. The Warning are three sisters from Mexico playing rock/hard rock and sometimes more metal-ish. Their lyrics are often clever and interesting with a lot of psychological storytelling and at other times their lyrics comment a lot on modern society. Jinjer is a metalcore-ish band from Ukraine and there is a lot of psychological food for thought as well as occasional social commentary in their lyrics as well.
we the people means as individuals it's up to us but not forgetting it's up to us all to not forget that we are people and that is how we all can win as nation
Awesome analysis, thank you. I know it ain't a popular band (it is for me cause it's my favorite band) but for me the best lyrics in a metal song are from Insomnium, song called "Pale morning star" - maybe you wanna check the lyrics video sometimes, you will for sure not regret it. To me it's the ultimate hymn to the ones you love but who have already passed away.
The most important thing that people really don’t see when it comes and goes by like money. Is easy to earn when you get blows out from us. But here how easy explains the song: is our mistaken views of ourselves as being individual and isolated from the rest and how we actually are a tiny part of something greater, from which we come when we are born, and to which we go when we die.
You're interpretation describes the general gist for the reasons why an alien instead of a human was used. An alien discovers earth and, from way up high, views humans as holding strong values in support of cooperation and unity based on what can be perceived from far away. After landing and viewing humans up close sadly feels they were mistaken as humans display values which favors individual superiority/prestige and personal wealth, and as the video shows, the alien attempts to understand why by experiencing life with those perceived values (and doesn't seem to experience any actual joy from it). It's not just a message to let go of the belief of control over peer perspective/acceptance, but also to encourage the viewer to always assess their values and goals with themselves openly and honestly to ensure they are what truly matters to you and not just something that was observed in others and decided upon for that reason alone. Regardless, great take on your interpretation of the songs message, solid breakdown and explanation. Keep it up! :)
Great and insightful comments. I was wondering how the strange looking boy fits in. Perhaps he is an alien ET and because he is not like us he can see us more clearly. We are surrounded by people like ourselves who have the same control issues and walls and can't see that we are trapped as well. The alien ET boy, however can see us. We see him as a freak celebrity and drive him around in parades and walk him on the red carpet surrounded by supermodels. He sees us as trapped, which is why I think he goes to sleep at the end being so tired viewing all of the senseless struggle that we all put ourselves through.
I've always taken this song to be a much more spiritual song. The opening verse, "Life is a waterfall/We're one in the river/And one again after the falls", I've always taken to mean that before we're born we're part of a broader spiritual collective consciousness and when we die, we rejoin that collective spiritual consciousness, but like in a waterfall where water breaks up into individual drops, we all become individual and separate from one another. It's when we look around and realize that we're all the same, coming from the same source and are part of a greater whole. The song is almost buddhist.
I like how the video starts with no introduction, straight to the video!
Needs to be a trend. Please. 4 minutes of exposition and yammering and "previews of coming soon" at the beginning that nobody cares about... this was refreshing.
That’s what I said in the first one I saw…I was like wow, no 5 minute intro bs!
yup
I think one of the band members said that the kid was inspired how he felt in life sometimes. As an "alien" or an outcast. Althought surrounded by many people, they still feel alienated, which is why the character looks the way it does
..and that he was doing that b/c he thought people wanted him to do. we let that go then great things happen
also i think the 2 Women beside "the alien" are the devil
I've always interpreted the song's lyrics as inviting the listener to be critical of their own mindset, but when combined with the powerful music, it feels very empowering and uplifting.
See, to me the video and song has the same meaning. It's fame chasing and envy. Everyone abandons everything they gain for the next big thing and then the next. The boy in the video is an alien in settings totally unlike what he should be surrounded by.
I was just about to post this same exact thing. 20 years later and I never thought literally an aerial perspective. 😅
Same here. However I need to do the walk of shame since its been 22 years of listening for me before seeing the light!😅
i was 15 im 41 ;) happy to see that the song lives :) I'm also happy that we might one day decipher the lyrics correctly so I can die in peace :P we got no clues until troubled nerds started storming the lyrics... if it's obvious from today's POV that's good news (re-read myself... i was one of those troubled nerds btw)
yeah I was like a bully-nerd I didn't fit anywhere tbh... still don't
4:20 ok this is by far the best analysis i've heard of this song
wow she is amazingly good! I read from someone else that the kid in the video is lost in imagining a better life for himself. He fails at letting his imaginings go and never really makes it to the higher level of consciousness, but we can.
I have NEVER seen ANYONE break this one down quite like you just did. Thanks for making sense of this for me for the first time in decades.
I love how raw and real your reactions are. The facial expressions while jamming out are gold. I do the same thing.
This song literally changed my life. The orchestra version will leave you in tears.... but in a good way.😊
I absolutely love the way you break down and explain your interpretations of these songs. Thank you for sharing!

@@Sentient_Rationality of course, what would you like to know?
Thanks, I guess mainly how (or what process) you used to obtain enlightenment. For example, meditation?
@@Sentient_Rationality good question that goes straight to the heart of the problem. ‘I’ didn’t do anything. That’s kinda what enlightenment is, switching from the doer to the witness. Your takes on lyrics are really good - finally a reactor that understands the deeper meanings
It’s so fun watching your head slowly start nodding with the vibe I grew up with
SOAD lyrics sound so mystical 😂
Beautiful song, with an amazing perspective(on your part). Wise words to consider. Great job.
Very interesting....enjoy seeing how you dissect these songs....Thank you

One of the best part of this video clip -besides the music- is the story what it tell the audience.
They are such a good band. I always get emotional listening to them
Las caras qué hace me encanta jajaj.
Saludos desde Argentina.
You just touched a nerve in me. Maybe I can finally learn to just "let go"
Thanks for the video!
“We didn’t lose, and we didn’t choose” I love Buddhism for that reason👍🏼
Bravo!! What a beautiful and analytical perception of this song. I was in the military, and I am very controlling!
While not the exact take I have, this is such a great perspective. ❤️
They are a very special band.
5:20 Being above Tokyo recently really reinforced this for me. Also Chris Cornell! RIP
Awesome! like your perspective!
It's about peaple being insecure and trying to control the world

Hold fast.
Your very brave to share and I'm glad you found a way to cope .music saved me to
100% agree on analysis
Deftones!!! Deftones!!! Deftones!!!
Thank for analyse and create this content I really like.
Oh you have to dive into some Type O Negative. R.I.P. Peter Steele
The Warning are so good for being so young.
I love how she reacts to this type of real Musik with message😍😍😍😍😍
One of my favorite bass lines !

This was amazing
we the people means as individuals it's up to us but not forgetting it's up to us all to not forget that we are people and that is how we all can win as nation
Damn, great break down. She's good.
This song is WAY more relevant than ever.
Keep it up! :)
I always thought it was about how success can be more destructive than failure.
That is close to what i feel with this song. Look outside accept and be apart of the bigger thing.
Great videos, just stumbled upon your channel. You would have a field day with Korn by the way 🤘
Awesome job! Keep it up!
I Love the song: Question, my favorit SOAD song
Awesome, truth spoken❤
Great and insightful comments. I was wondering how the strange looking boy fits in. Perhaps he is an alien ET and because he is not like us he can see us more clearly. We are surrounded by people like ourselves who have the same control issues and walls and can't see that we are trapped as well. The alien ET boy, however can see us. We see him as a freak celebrity and drive him around in parades and walk him on the red carpet surrounded by supermodels. He sees us as trapped, which is why I think he goes to sleep at the end being so tired viewing all of the senseless struggle that we all put ourselves through.
it's haunting and gets in yer mind a driving beat
Please check out Jinjer, "Perennial", "Vortex", or "Pit of Consciousness". Love your work. Thank you
I've always taken this song to be a much more spiritual song.
Great reaction thanks 🎉🎉🎉🎉MY SUSCRIPTIONS❤❤
I always think you should listen to/watch/the song all the way through one initial time
