Therapist Reacts to The Kill by 30 Seconds to Mars

  • Therapist analyzes the lyrics and music video of The Kill by 30 Seconds To Mars to discuss the desire to "bury" or destroy the parts of ourselves that we don't like. Instead, we can use the lyrics as a call to "break down" those painful parts to try to understand them and then bury them in the dirt like we would a seed as a way to integrate and grow.

I gotta say even as a nu-metal obsessed fan; in the early 2000s, 30 Seconds to Mars was a welcomed and completely unexpected surprise. I friggin, love this band and in my case it especially helps that Jared Leto is the lead vocalist. I have been a huge fan of his since forever. Its such a complex lyrics, Jared went all in for it like a pro! Sometimes our other selfs are trying to protect us from possible future traumas (anxiety) and it really can bend us to the idea that we don't want to suffer anymore with those warning thoughts, thus shoving your feelings deep down, trying to "kill it", when in reallity we should be understanding all parts of ourselves, the good and the bad ones, so we can grow lighter within dealing with situations that life presents to us 🥰 Great reaction and interpretation of it!

I've been binging these for a couple of days. I've never had luck with therapy. I'm not good talking to people beyond surface conversation....I did try therapy 3 times, and got the distinct impression I was kind of a chore. Or maybe I'm a bore. Regardless, I just put it all back inside where it goes and moved along. However, I've enjoyed hearing Taylor's break down of the same music that soothes me into feeling a little less isolated. So thanks Taylor, I'm listening, and you're helping me...please keep doing these. If you get around to it, dig into Highly Suspect sometime. Johnny touches on some really powerful emotions, I suspect like me, he has bipolar disorder. So much of what he goes through and sings about has really helped me on those difficult days. -Jason

You have to recognize your darker self. Examine it, accept it is part of you, then YOU set your boundaries and choose your better self. You make the choices as a complete person. If you ignore that part of you, it will sneak up at times and damage you. When you know and accept all of you, you can make better choices that make for a better life. Not a rosy, nothing bad ever happens life. But, a life where you roll with it and rise back over the waves. A lot of people won't understand that or that about you. Not your problem. It's about you leaning you and using that to be a better, more authentic you. I turned 67 March 24th and these are lessons I have learned. Some the hard way. The messy, the depressed, the bleak, they don't own me anymore. I own me and I am responsible for me. Funny thing that. It makes me a lot more relatable and lovable by those few people who matter to me the most. Hey, it's free information. Do with it as you will. It even has a money-back guarantee. Oh yeah, have a sense of humor. It helps.

My son is going through something like this right now. He wrote me a note saying in part “he has so much to say but I just can’t say it” and “ I’ve never accepted who I am”. He’s 20, autistic, and suffers from anxiety and depression. I’ve gotten him a therapist and he’s seeing her weekly, as well as additional support. It’s going to be a long journey to get to a good place I think. Depression is an awful disease. We haven’t had an episode in about 5 years. But I do take them seriously and will ask him if he’s thinking about hurting himself. I worry about him but I know he’s getting help. Hes so smart and kind and funny and I know he has so much potential. It’s hard watching him suffer.

Especially as an autistic person, this song has always resisted with me. Now that you kind of put this into perspective, it makes sense.
Most of my life, I masked my true self and just tried to be a normal person so hard and it killed me, but I also had no idea I was doing it as i didn't know I was autistic until I was 28 (34 now). Finally, years later, I've learned to let so much of my masking go and let myself OUT.
It just hits so deeply to me- to bury one part of yourself and boy do I understand that feeling well. Thankfully, i also know how to let them out.

There is a video on Drumeo and Chad smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers plays this song without never hearing the song on the drums… 30 seconds in he lights ups his drums and I can’t listen to this sing now without hearing Chad Smith’s drums

I just watched the video where you react to In The End by Linkin Park and this video. I can only say thank you with all my heart, because in such a short time you have done so much for me! Every time I follow your video a part of me feels the need to cry but at the same time feels welcomed and comforted. Thank you!♥

I have DID/CPTSD and having DID is like not just having two versions of self. It's utterly being at war with yourself and your never going to win.

Would love to see Taylor do Hurricane by 30STM. That mid-career music by Jared and Shannon hits hard.

I totally feel like this sometimes. I have ADHD, and I've worked with my therapist and I've learned to accept me with my defects. But it never stops being hard. Sometimes, when I remember this is for life, I practically lose all hope of being capable to manage myself for a while 😔
