My Grandmother was a seamstress i always thought she was magic
I learned how to use a sewing machine 8 years ago (I was about 11). If you watch carefully, you can see all of this happening as you thread your bobbin. This video just put what I had already figured out into words.
No joke, I've been thinking about how sewing machines actually work for the past few weeks. I had no idea, so I'm glad you decided to have a look at this.
Thankyou for not joking
Nate: *useful sewing machine information*
Grace: "I'M IN A CABINET!"
"This is so cool"
She's so tiny I wouldn't be surprised to find her in the bobbin compartment.
So Nate has been paying Grace to hide in a cabinet give random sewing machine facts lol
that’s what i was thinking about the whole time
Ok. Now freeze dry the sewing machine. Then microwave it in a washing machine
Yes. Microwave it inside a washing machine 😂😂😂
Yup. Do that to a $1200 machine, sure.. 😉
Here it comes, the double whammy! The washing machine cAN HEAT SOUP
@@almaeclu I think they have destroyed more expensive things than that 😹

Thumbs up for sewing, thoroughly underrated
I got my love of sewing from my grandmother, and I've been hand sewing professionally for over 12 years. I believe that sewing is a very useful skill to know, regardless of gender. And sewing can be a lot of fun!
I agree. I learned how to sew professionally before I learned how to repair the machines. Knowing how to operate them has made me a better mechanic. And yes, learning to sew by any gender is a useful skill.
My Brother learned to make lace inside of a handkerchief from our Grandmother from Norway, knitting and crocheting from our Great Aunt, and he learned to spin wool to yarn and thread then weave it into tapestries from a Native American neighbor when he was 10. He makes all kinds of cool stuff.
On a few Boy Scout Eagle Boards of Review we’ve had a woman ask the question to the candidate “what merit badge is missing?” She always suggests that a Sewing merit badge is the missing merit badge.
Its seems that knitting was invented by male vikings, so we have to thank them for ugly christmas sweaters i guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Edit: now im learning how to use the magic needle by making a multicolored hummingbird
I taught my son how to use a sewing machine when he was young. As an adult, he still sews when needed :)
You raised him well😃🤗
My mom taught me how to hand sew, and it's definitely come in handy (pun intended). Last year, I found an old Singer machine from the 60s somebody was throwing away, and I learned how to use it. I made my own COVID masks with it and have altered a few garments to fit better. Sewing gets a rap as a hobby for housewives and old ladies, but it's a super useful skill for anyone to have.
i actually had to teach my wife how to use her sewing machine. dads for the win :P (also cheers home economics at school, i didnt grow up to be totally useless)
@@brapamaldi7666 I'm the same: had to teach my wife to use our sewing machine (I had to convince her to let me buy one first). I didn't have Home Ec in school, but my Mom and Grandma taught me skills so that I can still surpass their abilities in the home--all before the invention of the Internet!
Can someone please convince my brother that he should learn to sew, so he fix his own clothes
I've used a sewing machine for over 40 years and never quite understood. That was a perfect explanation. Thank you!
The only part that can still be confusing is how the top thread creates to loop, and bobbin gets woven-in through the loops. A CAD video example would be very helpful.
Watch it again. That housing around the bobbin grabs the needle thread, pulls it out and around the entire bobbin. Pretty neat idea.
That's really the only part that's never been explained to me before. Even having my own machine and watching it start to work, this part wasn't clear. The top thread looping around the entire bobbin is how this isn't all done with slip knots. The speed at which these machines can perform this trick, many times per second, without destroying the thread every time, is further amazing.

I think I can fix my grandmother's sewing machine now, that's how helpful this was!
No one that manly has ever explained how a sewing machine works. Thank you TKOR.
Thank you so much for this! In middle school, all they taught us was how to thread it and I would always forget steps and be punished for it. All I wanted was to understand the machine I was using but the teacher felt like I was just slowing down the class. I'm 26 now but I've always been afraid of sewing for this reason but thanks to you guys I think I might try it again now that the machine actually makes sense to me!
Oh man that’s a bad teacher. 🙁 I let my kid start using my machine when he was 7 or 8. He’s mechanically inclined and it’s a very cheap machine. See if you can pick one up second hand, one with no electronics (screen), and just muck around with it!

Without that annoying kid
@@justinbussell7637 dont be so rude.
Whats inside started as a school project when the son was ill so saying such rude stuff isnt nice
One more random fact: originally a scroll saws/jigsaws were just modified sewing machines. Bottom part with the bobine was removed and the needle was replaced with a small saw blade.
As for actual sewing machines, i had the pleasure to work with a 1929 Singer machine that was retrofitted with a motor instead of that one big pedal. It sounded like a train and honestly felt like one, but would sew anything from fine silk to thick warm blankets with no problems. Really awesome machine!
Thank you for the explanation of the mechanism. It made sense and was actually interesting to learn about.
I have been wondering about it since I was 5 years old watching my grandmother sew with a sewing machine. It has been bugging me ever since. I am now 31 years old and I can finally put that to rest! Thank you 😅
I've always used my moms sewing machine because I always need her help getting the bottom bobbin going 🤣
Grace just hangin out in your cabinets, she wild.
Wait maybe that's where she lives
This was the most informative RUclips video I have seen in a long time.
Wow Nate!!!! 52 years of confusion and mystery dispelled by the understanding that the Bobbin is supposed to go BELOW the machine.
Thank you!!!!
Explain a WiFi router and an extender pls cuz I swear those are magical
Not that exactly it’s just a small computer broadcasting a suitable and al digital that’s why it would be not a interesting video
@@EnigmaticLucas ok but how does it work
I know extender, it is basically a repeater, it can take signal and make it strong, because a router itself cant send a signal for example 15 meters, it can go for 14 max (again this is just example) and the repeater takes the signal and makes it stringer from its specific spot, you can think about it like the repeater in minecraft, it is the same idea
@@hihi-nl8bp A wireless router connects directly to a modem by a cable. This allows it to receive information from - and transmit information to - the internet. The router then creates and communicates with your home Wi-Fi network using built-in antennas. As a result, all of the devices on your home network have internet access.
@@hihi-nl8bp ask Linus
I was wearing my "Look Mom No Hands" shirt while watching
Thank you so much for not only showing the machine, but also creating larger models to explain things.
Partner had to hand stitch a repair in a machine stitched item and because he's never used a sewing machine he thought the two separate threads were not supposed to hook into each other. It was adorable and I wish I could have shown him this video at the time.
This actually helps tons, I took home economics in middle school but my teacher completely skipped over the sewing machine. I know how to hand sew but with a sewing machine I'm helpless 😭 Thank you for this video
One of the greatest mysteries that plagued my mind as a 5 years old. But by the age 6 I had pretty much figured out how it might be working. That was the day when I tried to load the thread and i failed to load the secondry thread and when I pulled on the stitching it came out and I had figured out why they have to load secondry thread.
I have sewn since I was 5 years old (52 now) your video on the working on the sewing machine is totally awesome!! great job answered alot of my questions on its workings.
Finally someone actually tells how a sewing machine works! This was very helpful!
He was talking about his mom and then i relised that the T hes wearing it the Look Mom No Hand's
Funny, I didn't see until you pointed. 😳😂🤣

I am so glad you did this video because I have always been wondering how they work. Next could you see how salt grinders work and how twisting grinds finer?
Of all the channels in the world, never would I ever have thought that it would be yours to actually teach me something I sincerely didn't understand. Thanks, man!
My grandmother had a singer sewing machine on its own table. It was a piece of furniture and looked so beautiful. I remember her using it when I was a toddler.
HOLY COW! During quarantine I did a lot of sewing projects. One day while doing some maintenance, I was wondering how this thing really worked? Never thought to turning to RUclips. Just forgot about it till now. Thank you for answering my question! 🥰
By the end of quarentine, I was so boared I started sewing my toilet paper together
I am disappointed because the needles and other stuff are not in a sweet box
Should have been dressed as old people just to be fun.

So Barthelemy Thimonnier created one of the first successful sewing machines. He had a factory that mainly sewed uniforms for the French army... at a very quick pace. Other tailors in the area got scared because he was taking their jobs, so they all came together and burned down his factory... with him in it. Thimonnier survived, rebuilt, and they did it again. He survived the second murder attempt as well.
Wow! Thanks! I am about 600 masks, five quilts and a few hems into sewing, and probably thousand of hours in, and I had no idea. As long as my machine worked, I was happy! I am glad I get a better knowledge of a machine I use almost daily!
I would watch just nate talk about sewing theory in a 45 min vid
Oh my goodness. I've watched several videos trying to understand how a sewing machine works but this has definitely been the most helpful! I love the "homemade machinery" you made to help explain.
Also - I use this exact machine most days, it is wonderful. Thank you for not destroying it, that would have made me very sad.

Idea for a drinking game: Every time he says "bobbin" take a drink.

Ok and like my coment it is above this comment and have a great day
Or a drink everytime he says “spool” instead of bobbin xD
There are a bunch of these comments
I’m sorry even if I wanted to I’m too young
Why so many comments saying they are first when they clearly are just early-
It is because lets say the video came out, and so 6 people came, and they cant see the comments because fir that you have to update / f5, and so they think of themselves as first when in practice the otger people did not yet sent their comment
I don't know y

Because children have to play.😁

Nate, thank you so much for explaining the black magic of Sewing machines
Nate, it's almost like weaving. The rotary shuttle moves in a circle and grabs the loop from the needle side and makes a full revolution with it. Then stich and repeat!
❤️❤️ love from south africa ❤️❤️
You spamer
I'm 16, self taught to hand sew at 7, I've inherited my grandmothers sowing machine, and was once gifted one for my 13th birthday, I've always wondered how it worked lol
P.s I think an older machine is easier to use
Have you ever used a machine with a treadle? If not, try to find one you can use for at least a one inch (2.5cm) seam.
Can't exactly say I have ever felt the need to know this magic. But I did understand it.
I don't think you understand just how great this video is! It's one of those things that everyone is wondering about for years but never thought important or pressing enough to look up, probably cause we assumed it was too complicated idk. But you showed us and even made a giant model! The giant model was great XD

I've been sewing off and on since I was in my early teens. I can take apart just about every piece of a basic machine for basic repairs, service and, of course, oil it. I have known how to do this since I was a teenager. Seriously, my mother taught me about sewing machines before I even learned how to drive.
It honestly never occurred to me to even think about exactly how it sews though. It was always just something I took as an unknowable given.
Your model though explained it perfectly. I finally get it! Thank you. 😁
I have done rudimentary sewing all my life and this explanation was by far the best I've come across.
Are hand held sewing machines still around?
They are. I bought one a few years ago because I don't have room for a full machine.
