Okay, so I can agree with some of your theory; it's pretty solid, but it has some major flaws. My personal theory, based on everything that happened, is as follows:
    Let's start from the beginning.
Lilith and Lucifer's relationship: We don't have clear insights on that matter, but I don't think it's as bad as everyone thinks. From the scene with Lucifer and Charlie in the past when Lilith is taking her, it's probably just a scene where a mother is putting her child to bed. She didn't grab her by force and in a hurry; she was gently taking her from a fatigued father who is probably sad about another lost argument with angels, which this time led to executions.
Every photo of their family is a happy photo; we don't see any grimaces or false smiles, only lively photos capturing moments of their life together. You could argue that a family only looks good in photos, but don't forget about the first scene from the first episode when Charlie is reading a book with a story of Luci and Lilith's first meeting, where she said that her mother was always reading it to her before she left. That's not the story that a mother would tell her daughter again and again if there was something bad between her and the father.
So, executions happened, and as Charlie said, her father let it happen. I think the decision about this event was the last time Lucifer fought for his dreams and fell into depression. Lilith probably wanted to deal with this situation because of Lucifer and Charlie, who were also threatened by execution. She made a plan and found a lone overlord who had just lost his battle with Vox (we know that Alastor "almost got him," and then he just disappeared) and she made a deal to keep her daughter safe and help her with her ambition, and in return, she would save him from his demise.
After that, as someone that probably Heaven was also afraid of, she came to Adam (because she knew that he would try to harm her loved ones) to make a deal. She would return to heaven to be supervised and not rise against hell, and Adam would keep his hands off her family.
The deal with Charlie is probably a final getaway from this situation. And as he said, he doesn't ask for anything that will do any harm to others; he will simply make Charlie end his deal with Lilith.

Yes! this is almost the same theory i had only i thought Alastor tried to take over hell by fighting Lilith but got overwhelmed so she spared Alastor in return for doing her a favor of helping out Charlie but the Vox theory would tie things together much more neatly.
The other theories always mention how Alastor was sent to make the hotel fail but that has always bothered me because as far as i can tell we see Alastor actually make things better. He made a commercial with a whole camera crew and costumes, closed a massive hole in the wall with his minions, sent his own dear friend of his away knowing they would only cause more problems in the hotel (Mimzy), and ofcourse, staffed the hotel to begin with. Even in the last episode with the big fight he literally shields the entire hotel from the attacking angels.

My only problem with the idea of Alastair being there to sabotage the hotel is that he is doing a pretty terrible job at that. Throughout the entire season there isn’t a moment where he goes against the hotel in a major way and on several occasions he makes the difference between the hotel succeeding and failing.

Here's a way to look at it: at the beginning of the first episode, he was told to make a commercial for the hotel on tv. He didn't like to do that, so he "had some fun with it."
I think applying the same logic for his actions regarding the entire hotel makes a good amount of sense. He doesn't actually want the hotel to succeed, obviously, but he's finding ways to get his kicks out of it

I think that Al was sent there to protect Charlie and the hotel, as well as stirr up shit with Lucifer and make him jealous. I also don‘t think that Lilith made the deal with Adam to get to heaven, but she‘s playing both sides. Her part of the deal was to leave Hell so her people would no longer be motivated by her. So, she sent Alastor with exact instructions on how to draw Lucifer out of his emotional numbing, and that would be via Charlie.
We‘ll have to see how Lilith will react to her new task of preventing Charlie from succeeding. If she really does that, I wonder what her initial plan even was. If it was keeping her family safe until they are both prepared to take on Adam‘s army - well, that happened. She really has no reason to remain in Heaven, and from the way she looked at Lute, she was clearly annoyed. It would be a great twist if S2 took up on this exact moment on the beach and Lilith just smirked and told Lute „Why would I want to stay here, I‘ve accomplished my plans“ and vanished back to Hell.

Perhaps I'm reading too much into this, but a funny detail is how Alastor mentions to Zestial that he took a well earned "sabbatical" leave - sabbatical can mean paid leave for study or travel, traditionally one year for every SEVEN YEARS worked - or it can just relate to the sabbath, a day of abstinence within Jewish religion
Perhaps he was forced to lay low and stop attacking overlords until Charlie requested Lilith's help to which Alastor had to acquiesce (appearing right after Charlie calls Lilith in the pilot)
I also do feel like he can't actually harm anyone unless it's for Charlie/the hotel, which is why he says "it feels good to finally blow off some steam again" after solving Mimzy's loanshark problem
This is odd because he erased overlords left and right before he vanished, why couldn't he just let his power's run wild whenever he pleased?
It's like he was completely unable to do anything until the point Charlie needed help
He also turned down Rosie's hint towards a new desperate demon who would be easy to sway into a deal (whoever that even is) - which, why would he not want to acquire more power unless he's unable to harm/take souls, other than he's restricted to only harm for Charlie's sake
This may also explain why he was visibly on edge when he met Zestial on the way to the overlord meeting (though this could also just show how powerful Zestial is and not much more else)
It would make sense why he would want to "remind" people not to mess with the Radio Demon because no-one should come to believe he's unable to injure anyone if he's attacked outside of the hotel; he's told Charlie before that just because someone is smiling doesn't mean there's not more to it - his character is about hiding his weakness, with a smile and with appearance
Ironically, in this way, he is very similar to his rival Vox
...which makes me wonder whether we'd see this fatal weakness revealed now that the Vees are more confident
There's also clearly something going to happen with Niffty and the Vees (Niffty has already met Valentino and Vox seems to be planning something by how he grinned at the news when Niffty showed up)
...though it seems Niffty's contract doesn't allow her to talk when filmed (she always goes completely still, could just be a gag, but could also be Alastor making sure she isn't "invaturated" by a certain "bad boy" coincidentally having a technical device as a head - it could mean that when Vox may try to recruit her, she may actually just creepily stare at Vox instead of doing anything, which... would be funny (or she's ordered to attack him on sight and therefore reacts weirdly around cameras, who knows))

also, why would lilith want to go to heaven and cut contant with her family for good? not to mention that heaven cast her out in the first place, i don't really see her being happy to come back and leaving everything behind
lastly, i don't think alastor will care about the main cast more moving forward but will try to do the opppsite. it seemed to me like he realized that he'd almost died being "alturistic" and that is not how he wants to be remembered because of his obsession with power (since he most likely views attachment as a weakness)

You literally just confirmed what I’ve been thinking all along about Alastors powers being limited by the deal. It makes so much sense the way you put it.
Alastor had the power to defeat Adam but right in the middle of the fight his powers just stopped working. He was in full beast mode one second and then the staff was just broken the next. His power just got cut off out of nowhere. He even says ‘what just happened?’
If, as you say, his reason for being there was to hinder the progress of the hotel, fully committing to killing Adam infringed on his deal with Lilith. By killing Adam himself he’s actually helping the hotel instead of trying to sabotage it. That’s why his powers got cut off.

There’s a hole in your theory
If his powers deactivate when he’s genuinely helping the hotel, why do they instead increase when he’s getting rid of the sharks that are attacking and destroying it? Why did they increase in the pilot, when he defended the hotel from Sir Pentious?
If the deal limits his powers when he’s helping, why would he be caught off guard and genuinely shaken by his staff breaking? Given this is Alastor, he’d know the terms of this deal, so his reaction to his staff breaking wouldn’t be “Oh fuck?!” it would be “I knew that would happen”.

      I agree with this theory.
If the vid’s theory about Alastor being (forcefully) contracted to Lilith is true, then Alastor is using Charlie as a means to break his contract.
Think about it. If the vid’s theory about Lilith is true, then Lilith still loves her daughter Charlie. Alastor knows this and does everything in his limited free will to get in the good graces of Charlie. That is why he is helping Charlie with the Hotel almost unconditionally, revamping it, calling in demons under his contracts to serve, and even defending it with everything he has even against the likes of Adam.
All this to gain Charlie’s trust/admiration and eventually use her against Lilith to breakout of their contract. He doesn’t care about the end goal of the hotel or its other denizens, he only is there because of Charlie, the one individual and the potential ticket out of a contract he hates.

That's an interesting insight. Why would Alastor *also* disappear for 7 years? The only explanation that comes to mind is that his deal allowed the other party to *make* him disappear, which makes me wonder what could've possibly persuaded him to accept such a deal.
If I had to guess, maybe it was more of an ultimatum of sorts. It's possible he bit off more than he could chew and was offered a deal he couldn't refuse. Like, "I could kill you right now, or you can be my puppet."

Sorry to disappoint, that is NOT where this ends!" He then laments not being free from his bonds, and desiring to rule over hell. It looked more like he was hating having to be nice and helpful, than the opposite.

dunno - it almost feels like that this scene is ripe for misinterpretation and intentional misdirection. they could literally go down the path of partial redemption for Alastor, or they could go down the route of making him the series big bad, and in either case this scene would make sense, cuz it depends on where Alastor puts the emphasis on what he's said internally - something we can't fully know until it's revealed later on. a fork in the road will undoubtedly happen for his character over the next season (or more possibly).

As for Seraphim, now that she is proven to be wrong, she will definitely face serious consequences. To keep her position, she would need to keep it a secret and force those coming from Hell like Ser Pentious and others while also trying to ensure the Hazbin Hotel could not continue to rehibilitate sinners. IDK if she is aware of Adam's deal with Lilith, but once she finds out, i would imagine she would team up with Lilith to get the Hotel shut down.
i would really like to see Adam in Hell and him trying to get rehibilitated.
The one thing i don't get though is why did Alastor make such a deal with Lilith? what deal did she give him that would incentivze him to strike such a deal? the only thing I would imagine is Alastor was once a powerfu Overlord, but him killing the old ones led to a power vacuum where Vox and others filled the void and they were more powerful than him. Fearing that he would be next, especially after his last fight with Vox, Alastor made the deal with Lilith to make him more powerful than the Vees and others, perhaps even make him a Deadly Sin or even the new Prince of Hell (Overthrowing Lucifer since he was never keen on the job to begin with). But he first needed to keep Charlie safe and ensure the Hotel would not succeed.

    1. It's said when Charlie is in heaven that they can't execute ANY HELL BORN, including Charlie and Lucifer. So I think that would be part of the deal NOT specifically Charlie & Lucifer.
    2. At the end of EP 8, Alastor says he wants his freedom and wings? This could of course be a metaphor, or it could be literal, perhaps he was in heaven already and want his wings back, that would explain where he went for 7 YEARS.

I saw a this theory on a different platform a few days ago and I feel like it should also be considered:
What is being limited with this deal isn’t Alastor’s powers, it’s his ambitions. He’s allowed to have massive powers, but only if he uses them to defend the hotel and Charlie’s dream.
You see this throughout the show, that he protects the hotel from several intruders and threats. And whenever he has to defend the hotel he says something to the effect of “I can’t let anything happen to the hotel”. He also straight up says “It’s time to let everyone know why I’m here.” before defending the hotel from the mafia sharks.
Towards the end of the season, his ambitions continue to grow, even as he finds that maybe he may learn to enjoy the gilded cage he was put in. That’s why he has a beef with Lucifer, because Lucifer has power AND is free to use it however he likes. He also shows his ambitious side to Rosie, when they both comment on how powerful Charlie is getting and then Alastor says “she’s full of potential that I could guide”. with a rather…predatory look in his eyes.
He starts feeling accustomed to the hotel patrons a little bit…but then something happens. The battle with Adam. After failing to protect the hotel with the shield he put up, he tries to fight Adam himself, something that almost gets him killed.
And that’s why he has a mental breakdown at the end. Realizing that he doesn’t want to die for the hotel or the inhabitants and yet because of this deal he almost did . Charming as the residents may be, his ambitions are still stronger. He doesn’t want to be limited to just defending the hotel anymore. He wants to be the one pulling all the strings.

This stuck out to me, 'Test'. Why would they be talking about that? We've learned that they like to hide easter eggs in songs if you know where too look and this was a big one to me. What if the Overlords are testing Charlie under Lilith's orders? (I wouldn't imagine the Vee's as they seem to be unaware / uncooperative if this theory is true.) And when Lilith saw Alastor as a threat to her plan, she somehow got him to make a deal with her to help Charlie with whatever she was planning.
This is my own added theory to what you already provided.

I speculate that Alastor is more hungry for freedom is because he has never been this close escaping his deal.
Sure he has a long way to go but being able to make that deal with Charlie is definitely a step closer to his goals and with it: it becomes more real.
Also I don't think that Alastor will one day be the main antagonist, maybe they'll fight him once but Alastor won't end up being the bad guy in the end.
In the sing-along with the cannibals Alastor said that charlie fits all the criteria to lead and Alastor supports her. Rosie believes as well that charlie is the "ace in the hole".
I think Alastor (like the father figure he is) he would like Charlie to be the new ruler of hell since Alastor knows that Lilith doesn't qualify anymore cause he knows her dirty secrets (the betrayal and everything) and someone has to replace her.
The Idea of Alastor wanting to pull the strings may possibly come to the Idea that when Charlie soon becomes the leader of hell (which he believes she will) then he probably just wants to be besides her to be the most trusted advisor or something.
Like what ever it is he tells charlie goes...
Of course with that, that role best suits Lucifer which may explain why Alastor doesn't want Lucifer being around.
And with the hotel still going I think Alastor would still change to be a better man to (not that good but better in some way)
Alastor is too much of A fan favorite just to kill him in the end so I think this might be the case.
I believe Alastor will use the favor he had from Charlie either to be free one day? Or use that favor for Charlie to appoint her as her most trusted advisor or something else.

So, a few things I am super curious on/would love to see:
-) Charlie's side of the deal she made with Alastor is actually more powerful than she probably knows. Since she stated the favor cannot "involve hurting anyone", that means it is not restricted to physical harm. It can be emotional, mental, spiritual, or any other form of harm based on her interpretation of it hurting someone, or if the one she does the favor against tells her that this will hurt them. This also include if the favor hurts her in anyway as well, e.g. feeling guilty and hurt about it.
-) A team up of Alastor and Lucifer against an opponent, so, say for example, Charlie is hurt real bad in battle and none of the others have the power to do anything except Alastor and Lucifer, and they do an epic team up with the common goal of caring for Charlie.
-) How the whole "redeemed sinners" thing actually works, because with Sirpentious, it looks like there must be some very specific criteria to be met. They are: 1. The sinner must willingly sacrifice themselves for the good of others around them in an act of full altruism. and 2. Either an angel (or a sinner???) must kill them. 3. The sinner who died must be killed in a way that it would be considered unjust to kill them (Not sure on this one)

And now that Adam is dead, that puts in danger her place in heaven.
Other thing that I don't seem to agree with is the fact that Sera might be in trouble, and for some reason everyone just forgot the fact that the sinners up until Charlie arrived, were never interested in redemption or salvation (And they are just straight up bad people how earned hell), I mean, If I had to protect heaven I wouldn't want those near either, so Sera kinda has a point

You theory actually makes sense and thus far, it is most likely/logical scenerio. i don't really see any other way why Lilith would abandon her position in hell and her family unless she wanted to get back into Heaven. i'd imagine she would be resentful for being banished to Hell and was thriving in hell just so she can get back in. But once adam made her this 'offer she couldn't refuse', she really didn't have a choice. she would get the best of both worlds; she could get a ticket back to heaven, in exchange for abandoning her 'revolutionary' guest, AND neither Lucifer or Charlie would get hurt during the extermination. She really didn't have a choice. If she didn't take the offer, then not only would her only chance to get back to heaven be lost, but also Charlier and Lucifer, including herself would get hurt or be killed in the process.

Yes, he did say to Nifty that he was growing fond of them, but at the same time he didn’t care about Charlie enough to not take advantage of her when she was in the worst emotional state possible. We also know that he was plotting that for a long time. If he cared , he would’ve told her the instant he learned of that information.
And he didn’t care enough to not threaten Husk with torture and murder.
Additionally in the final song he seems to be mocking the prospect of people thinking he died for the people of the hotel. That again, doesn’t really indicate he cares for them at all.

In real life, there are true monsters out there, one's you can't and won't be able to redeem. This reminds me too much of Ted Bundy. I like the theory, but I feel like Alastor is being underestimated. I don't have much theories on his deal with Lilith, except that I think it is either limiting his power or holding him back from getting more power. He is not a good person deep down, before his 7 year absence he ate overlords and other strong demons and broadcasted their screams on his radio station, and he seems to have a very determined mindset.
I don't think he is really making friends with the main cast. He treats smiles as a tool to help him get what he wants. I think he went to the hotel to befriend and use Charlie's power as the daughter of Lucifer, in Cannibal town he says that she is "full of potential for him to guide", I think he wants to help awaken her powers and then cash in the favor she now owes him.
His strange rivalry that comes up from meeting Lucifer isn't because of a deal with Lilith, but because he thinks Lucifer is too carefree with his power and status, and despises him for wasting it.
The fight with Adam was as much to defend the hotel as to give him the status of being the one to kill the first man, which is why when he says "Alastor the Altruist, died for his friends", I think he is imagining a headline made by Vox if he had died, ruining his status as a terrifying overlord.
I feel like his main goal is to break the shackles on his power and to become a tyrant of hell and overthrow Lucifer.

  • @Iquey
    @Iquey 10 месяцев назад +1

I was getting ready this morning and thinking about Alastor's relationship to his deal and his power/timeline. I am thinking Alastor when he arrived in hell and started taking down overlords in his early days, maybe he made a first deal with Roo/Root of all evil. Because of his voodoo background, i think he wanted power in hell to survive the harsh environment, and Roo came to him presenting herself as a powerful Orisha, which granted Alastor some extra powers like shadow teleportation and feeding overlords screams to his radio broadcast.
At some point as his power was growing, Vox and him became friends, having similar powers and dark sense of enertainment industry humor, but Roo didn't like that Alastor was getting too big for his britches, and Vox and Alastor have some kind of falling out..maybe Alastor violated some terms of his first contract with Roo, and she reduced his powers while he was in the midst of a fight with Vox and the early V's conglomerate team Val and Velvette, causing Alastor to nearly die and having to disappear into obscurity for 7 years.
At another ppoint after this, maybe Lilith offers to restore his steegth and abilities in exchange for what she wants, or how she wants him to look after Charlie and her hotel project or just make sure Charlie isn't harmed because Lilith might've not believed in depressed Lucifer's ability ro keep her safe from heaven's ruthlessness. But maybe her deal with Adam was to be able to live in heaven if exterminations of hell's surplus sinners could be done yearly. So Lilith might only care about helping Charlie stay alive, and if a few sinners die to keep Charlie and herself safe, that was a good enough trade to her.

He’s saying it was amusing to see Charlie fail, but he wants to break out of the deal in some sort of way so that he doesn’t risk his life again just to watch over Charlie.

I think we will get alot more or know once the second season comes around. Theres a theory i have seen that Lilith isnt in heaven but its eve pretending to be lilith. Alastor might be turning good is highly likely and he will either turn good and be redeemed showing anyone can be redeemed or he wont showing not everyone can be redeemed. Alastor never directly attacks anyone in the show he defends himself and has shown a likeness for "weak things" . Him killing the overlords might have been defensive as well but people viewed it as him hunting them when really they were hunting down this new hotshot who doesn't like others talking down to him. Theres also the possibility its not a demon but an angel who has control over alastor maybe another dreamer who believes in Charlie. Seras reaction being shocked but vauge enough to where she could go either way. Trap kill or embrace sir pentious. Her realizing all the suffer she caused to "sinners" who could have been saved her make her start spiraling into chaos and fall. I think eve(lilith) or sera being season two main villain is highly likely.

My Theory as well, if you guys remember in Episode 7, when Alastor heard from Vaggie and everyone else, he did become overly happy and sinister. And after that he started to criticize Charlie attempt on Hell being Redeemed and getting everyone doomed, from the moment he made a deal and ask only a "FAVOR" I believe in the later season 2 episode.
I can see myself Alastor meeting with Lilith and about Alastor, when he and Rosie was singing he said a Charlie is Powerful like his dad and can be guided, or control by Alastor "FAVOR" he made with Charlie, I do believe that Alastor is going to end up using Charlie to unclip his wings, because of his deal having a "constraints" because he is hungry of FREEDOM, when he said that to Charlie, quote: "Just because you see a smile, don't think you know what's going on under underneath" from the moment they made a deal, you can see Alastor mouth was like Stitch and I believe that's the only time I see Alastor truly been happy. BUT ITS ONLY A THEORY THANK YOU GUYS 🤎

it makes sense that death in hell could bring someoane to heaven and viceversa since death is what brings you to hell or heaven after u died a mortal
also it could be that alistor would ask charlie to give him power after all charlie should be on par with lilith and if she could find a way to transfer power either temporarly or forever he could ask her for her power
and a head cannon is that deals can be broken by someoane more powerfull aka lucifer and alistor (if terminating a deal is posible) could ask charlie to ask lucifer if he could terminate a deal and the deal to be alistors (and later on husk's and angels's deals)

Let's not forget that Alastor frequently makes reference to "guiding" Charlie, presumably along a path that would directly benefit him in some way. It's possible that, rather than caring about the crew to any significant degree, he makes the deal with Charlie in order to have that ace up his sleeve should a back door to his deal open up.

As of now there's one more Demon somehow tied into all of this and that Demon is Stella Goetia, her statue was unsubtly placed in the very courtroom episode 6 took place in and we get quite a few glances at it.
It strikes me odd how it's placed there, kind of like an honorable statue with 2 seats at it's feet... both empty.
Not to mention Stolas was attacked with an angelic dagger in Helluva boss by Striker who got sent to do that... by Stella.
I do think that there must be a connection to Sera there, because this should 100% not be possible to exist if heaven and hell split when Lucifer was banished.

  • @kimlechman5856

So far, this is the best theory I’ve seen, because it makes a lot of sense looking into past episodes, and really considering how a lot of the smallest moments really make a big impact. Also, this a theory that doesn’t make Lilith out to be a villain like a lot of people have been making her out to be. Yes, it was completely wrong of her to abandon her daughter and her husband and people of hell in their time of need, which would at best make her an antagonist, especially when Charlie finds out the truth that Lilith has been in Heaven this whole time, she would definitely be in an emotional turmoil, but if the theory is proven right that the only reason why Lilith made the deal with Adam was to keep her family safe, then there’s a chance that her actions may be forgiven, and if it’s truth that she’s the one that Alastor has been making the deal with, that means she asked him to look after her daughter, meaning she still cares deeply about Charlie. I really hope this is what the show is going for, if not, then man I’ll be REALLY disappointed, and especially if everyone is right in saying that Lilith is a villain, because that’s really not the vibes I get for that cliffhanger ending.

The way I see it, he can only ask her to introduce him to someone else, because almost every favor he could ask could cause harm other than just conversations
Which would mean he may ask the daughter to ask her mother to release the chains or something akin to that

    So a few thoughts:
    1) I think Adam made a deal with nobody because he alone thought he was a badass and it wouldn't make sense.
    2) I think Alastor made a deal with Eve and wanted him to help the hotel to succeed to embarrass Adam and send him to hell for killing so many souls
    3) If Adam had that much power for being the first soul in heaven, imagine what power Eve has for presumably being the first soul in hell also would explain Alaster and by extension her disdain for Lucifer. Also Lucifer mentions her to piss off Adam
    4) It's said many times in the series that angelic weapons permanently wipe out a soul. So it's unlikely Adam is coming back which is
    4) Why Alastor might have lost or didn't use angelic weapons against him. He wasn't allowed to kill Adam as Eve wanted him to be embarrassed and banned to hell, not actually killed.
    5) Lastily, the deal between Alastor and the "breaker of chains" Lilith seems odd to me as well as abandoning her whole family. Which also lends credence to Eve being behind it all because she would partially blame Lilith for not obeying Adam.

What is the exchange in return?

I like this whole thing a lot. Couple things tho:
-Why are human souls still there in heaven and not faded into forever peace, why are they still around? You'd think being in heaven you'd die on the best note forever at peace and no longer need to continue on for any reason.
-How come this whole thing is set between only heaven and hell but no earth which is where the whole thing truly matters. In Helluva Boss we see the cherubs help some rich dude but we also learned that he tortured poor people so their judgement is whack. Does this imply that humans are basically abandoned and the angels don't really care much for humans unless they were going to get something out of it?
-What about Emily? She is happy for Pentious so she surely wants to tell Charlie and if Sera tries to stop her then this basically proves that angels never cared about humans making this whole thing basically an impossible class system. And since they haven't been shown to help this really puts them in a worse light. I mean, Sera is how old and she never truly tried to help sinners let alone humans on earth?
-The fact that Sera is shocked shows that she is not in control of who/how people get redeemed meaning that God might appear in this later, hopefully. I mean Pentious appeared in front of them for seemingly no reason but I feel it's to get both opposing sides to bear witness that it works but how will they handle this new info.
All in All, the only people to truly blame for this are the angels for not being any help at all.

Deals with devils and demons are usually literal. A favor at any time Alastor wants and it won't hurt anyone. So that means Charlie can't retaliate to something. It's inaction.
