- Well, I did it again. I bought another Gravely mower. I know, I know, but here me out. It was a mower I have wanted to try for a long time and I needed a new mower to replace my Hustler Raptor SD. I have only put 7.2 hours on it so far, but so far so good.

I just bought the 2023 ZT XL 42” Kawasaki engine. My yard is just under 1/2 acre and it works perfect for my application. The price, features, and 4 yr or 400 hour warranty were factors on this purchase. Never go back to a normal lawn tractor again!!
I bought a used 42 inch Gravely for $500. I just changed the oil, spark plugs, filters, and 2 tires today. I'll probably remove the mower deck and clean it tomorrow. It's perfect for my quarter acre lot. If it were an inch wider, it wouldn't fit in my shed. I don't want any mowers in my shop or garage.
Have had mine almost 6 years and I love love love my lawnmower.
Thank you for yer time, & good info.
Looks pretty smooth! Hopefully it performs better for you than the last gravely.
Thank you for the information, you spoke on some things I would not have thought about.
I'm glad I could help out.
If the deck is too far forward it won't cut right having the deck close to the tires is a good thing but l think your right they make one frame for a variety of decks Enjoy your new mower it looks great 👍😇
Bro thats a really nice mower!!! The deck towards the back does help traction which is a good thing we have had several raptor sds no traction
Nice review. You hit on some negatives that mean a lot to me. I am/was considering getting the 42 XL model. I too noticed that getting close to things could be a problem. You have actually mowed with it. So, that is useful info for me. The front being light is also a concern to me. Thanks.
I bought huskavarna z248f from lowes took it back the next day and bought a gravley ztx42. Best thing I ever did.
Great name
Did the same thing…
Let us know how the cut quality as the season goes. Maybe you could put an extension on the oil drain.
Hey LANSING lawn service. I think back in the day, probably like 90 I sold you some Scagg walk behind with bogey wheels and a couple of echo Weed whips. You also bought some of my accounts from me as I was going out of business. Anyways great to see you’re strong at it. Much love from Dimondale Michigan.
I now currently have the same mower and I like it other than the tire smashes down the grass and you leave a grass line if you don’t overlap enough. And the most thing I hate about it is the front bolts are so long in the front tire axle, that when you back up near a cyclone fence those long bolts snag the fence and pull out big pieces of it
Sorry Ron, but I think you are thinking of Lansing Lawn Care. The owner of that company passed away a few years ago. I think the company is still around but I believe the owner passed away.
I agree, the front axle bolts are very long. I have had the same problem.
I’m not sure if they updated this but there’s a ZTx-42 for sale near me for $1800 with 70hours on it. Thus me watching this review. But it’s got a Kohler 7000 series 725cc 24hp instead of 22 and the deck sticks outs much further on both sides. About 3” past the wheels on the side with the shoot and 4” on the other side. Some of the parts that are red on yours are also black on the one I’m looking at getting.
Here's my 2 cents worth - Aeiens is a parent company of Gravely.
Yeah, Gravely ZTX42 & Ariens ikonXD42 are identical; whichever's in stock. I got the Gravely.
Important information for me , thanks.👍📖☝️
I just started my own landscaping company this month and I bought this mower back in november. As just an around the house type at the time. I barely put 10 hours on it till I started working. Currently around 24hrs now. But for the price point this performs ok as a start to someones business. My biggest complaint is how light the front end is.
how has it held up.....looking at a exmark quest, scag liberty z and this one. i cut around 30 yards per week.
@michaelknowsstocks5170 your not gonna want the liberty or the gravely were up to about 45-50 a week now and I shortly after upgraded the gravely to a scag freedom z 48 then about a year ago I bought a scag patriot 52. The gravely gave me alot of issues before even 50 hours.
Well, if doing edging with a mower is a concern, the simple fix is to go up a size in the deck, say the 48" deck. That would bring the blades further outward than the tires. Secondly, the width of the castor wheels being wide gives it stability when mowing horizontally on hills, it impedes roll-over. That, coupled with a wider deck should answer any cutting situation you would face.
Plus with a small deck don’t plan on doing much edging with your mower as the deck and the tires are pretty much lined up. With other bigger decks you can swing up against stuff with just the deck portion and save yourself a bunch of weed whipping. It’s like they took the 48 inch deck off and just slapped on the 42
I completely agree with your statement. A little narrower front and backend would have been nice with this mower.
Good comments
Nice mower.
Identical to the ariens ikon XD 42 which I just got. Can be had for 3k plus tax and delivery
@2010stoof, I'm in S. Jersey & just got the Gravely ZTX42 from a local dealer a half hour away. Tx/prep/del...$4089.13. Ariens XD42 & Gravely ZT42 are identical (same co) whichever's in stock. I luv this thing! No more hoofing the push mower.
What high lift blades did you order? I have the ZTX 42 and looking for more blade options.
I have a ZT XL basically looks the same but it has some zt2800 hydros, better seat. Most Zs require some kind of food actuation to set the deck height but are there are a few exceptions...e.g. Husqvarna. A ton of commercial mowers use for foot levers and pins or foot levers and a hand lever ...never seen complain. You bought the most basic entry level residential mower that Gravely makes...use it for a season and trade it in if you’re unhappy with it. I just checked I don’t have the rubbing you have but my throttle is dinky like you said...and mine is bent over for some reason. Your review help me make my purchase.
I am glad I could help you out. The foot peddle doesn’t bother me, it is that I have to use the height selector every time I need to transport the mower. I wish they had a standard transport mode.
Lansing Lawn Service LLC oh that makes sense...I understand now
Thanks.
Some legitimate gripes, but the complaint about the deck adjuster seems ridiculous,
I’ve got 3 hours on one of these, and agree the deck should be moved forward. I would not want the frame shortened as it is scary enough climbing hills.
Funny, you are the only reviewer I have seen that calls this mower stable on hills. Most complain it won’t hold a line on slopes.
Appreciate you noting good and bad. Lots of good feedback.
On hills you do have to go up and down, no side to side. You’re right it would not hold a good line going side to side on a hill it is just too light. Thanks for the comment.
Oil is easy. Should have came with a tube. Hook tube on and route to your drain pan below. Then loosen back of yellow plug and oil will drain.
Both are good
VERY surprised you did not complain about no fuel gauge. That drive me nuts on mine.
Not having a fuel gage isn’t a big deal to me. I just top it off every time I use it.
i cut 30 yards per week - do you think it will hold up?
I would probably hold up for a year or two depending on how big your yards are. However, for $4500-$5000 you could buy a Bradley Stand on 36 which would be faster ground speed, better cut, and fully commercial. Because of cut quality issues I would be use the ZTX 42 more than a couple times a week. If I needed to use it more than that I would go with something commercial. With Gravely cut quality can also depend on what grass region you live in. If you’re cutting tall fescue this mower will NOT be your friend. However, if you’re cutting in the south this mower will do much better. The deck doesn’t have enough suction to lift tall fescue and cut it cleanly. You would have to double cut every lawn.
Do you see those bolts on the handles ? You need to adjust those so the sides don't rub against the plastic. Pushing the pedal to adjust the deck height is common on many zero turn mowers. You can buy a fitted floor mat for the operator station. You can use an oil pump to change the oil. Some of your "Don't Likes" are not necessarily bad. Gravely makes a great mower compared to others. Nice review.
I was thinking the same about the pedal. That’s a pretty standard thing and I thought the dial was pretty cool. It would seem to be a lot easier than fooling around with a pin.
I got the ZTX42 2wks ago....luv it! Right size/price for my property. Ok: no floormat, $40 for a Gravely-brand mat...oofah! I cut 2size an old rubber doormat, good2go! No trapdoor to pulleys, no biggie, drop the deck as low (1") as it will go. Needed a tarp, $100 from Gravely (2oofah), amazon...$40.
I say buy a 48” if you want the deck sticking out to trim
Such a great review, finally honest critique.
I know this is an older review but thanks for your thoughts. When you put on the high lift blades that eventually showed up did it improve your cut quality? Thanks
Unfortunately, the high lift blades did not do much for the cut quality. However, gator blades seemed to do pretty good.
@@LansingLawnServiceLLC 7/7/21, I have this machine, luv it. However, (my 1st ZT) I see what you mean about the 42" deck. Q: could you swap out the 42" for 48" ?
@@LansingLawnServiceLLC do you have a part # for those gator blades? Thx!
Excellent review. I, as a consumer, want to hear potential design flaws and I appreciate your review. Do you know if the 48” has similar issues?
I'm glad it was helpful. I do not know for sure if the 48 has similar issues, however it is the same machine, just a different deck.
Does this fit through most fence gates alright? How wide is it for real 42 inches?
It will fit through a 44 inch gate without a problem. I do not think it will fit through a 42 inch gate.
@@LansingLawnServiceLLC awesome thanks!
How do I start the lawnmower
Is this a serious question? If so, you pull the choke out and turn the key with the throttle at about half. Once the engine starts push the choke back down. Let the engine run for a minute or two before operating.
I'm down to the two mowers you have owned. Which do you prefer ztx 42 or Raptor Sd. Which should I buy?
First, it depends on where you live and what type of grass you have. Second, you need to consider whether you have allot of hills or flat land. I like that the gravely has 3 blades and the hustler leaves a small little strip of grass right between the mower blades. So if I have to choose one for myself I would choose the gravely because it eliminates that pesky little strip of grass. However, the gravely for me only gets used about 4 times a week. If this is going to be your main mower you may want to go a different direction altogether. I haven’t had much time on the gravely and I don’t know how it does with leaves. Nor do I know how it does in super thick grass. I just haven’t had to opportunity to test it on those things yet. Those videos are to come.
@@LansingLawnServiceLLC I live in Florida so we really dont have hills. I would be using it on like 4 yards a week. So still the Gravely is the one I should go with?
That has to be your choice. I know that gravely cuts pretty good in Florida so that for me would be a big factor. Is this going to be your main mower? And are you running g a business with this machine?
@@LansingLawnServiceLLC I cut about four a week as a side job. So would the Gravely ztx 42 be sufficient.
@@LansingLawnServiceLLC 5/24/21, Come leaf season the Gravely ZTX42 should be a snap w/bagger attachment. We have lots of trees in our area & I get my backpack Husqvarna blower & get it all in the open then rake & bag by hand.
same specs with snapper 360z only 1k more expensive because of the arm rest and sliding seat
@Lansing Lawn Service LLC....5/23/21, Just got 1 (915255) from a local dealer (NJ). 1st rider ever; luv this thing; tx/prep/del $4089.13 out the door. Deck flush to wheels, that's ok, I need my string trimmer anyhow. 1st I do that then run the machine. Just right for my ~10K sq.ft property. A few minor drawbacks......Only 1key; no trapdoor to belts; no mat, Gravely wants $40 for theirs, so I cut an old rubber doormat 2size; Gravely tarp, $100, I got 1 on amazon...$40. @Tony's Lawn Care ...
bro you are so much fun lmao gravely and ariens pick and choose color for 3k go wirh ariens for 500 mote same everthing but red hopw i diddnt stutter to much love p
Buy the floor mat for the deck
you should be an aniganer for ariens or gravlely
Had one of those at the start of last season. Sold and got a stander. But I sold my business off before we moved states definitely buying another gravely as it cut better then my wright stander B
I have a 2018 model, its 24 hp. wonder why gravely take away 2hp from same model same engine from 24hp to 22hp.
I have no idea. Good questions.
@@LansingLawnServiceLLC 6/11/21, Hello again, as you know, I got the G/ztx42--just right 4my property. After reviewing many models b/4 getting this, I can't help but notice the frame & so many sizes of (strait cut) decks. It looks like the 44-48-52" would be interchangeable on this frame. What do you think?
Do u think that Kohler engine is a good engine?? I just bought this same mower
Honestly I own several mowers with Kohler engines. I have never had a problem with any of them. I have yet to get this mower to bog down.
Thanks. the negatives will prevent me from considering this mower.
I am glad I could help you make your decision. More than anything I want to help people be truly informed about the product they are looking at purchasing. So many people these days either get the product for free to review it or they are paid to review the product and therefore the reviewer does not give a realistic view of the product.
That oil drain does look horrendous. My Raptor drain ain't much better
Yeah, it's not allot of fun to change the oil in this thing.
Just use the tube they give you with it.
Nice video but video is way to shaky... Get a gimbal. Works wonders 👍
Handles were not installed correctly
I got the 2023 Gravely ZT X 42 with bagger (not power bagger). It's AWEFUL!! Do NOT get this one! Also, the mower blows grass, leaves, debris all out of ALL sides of the mower including in front which goes RIGHT into your face and eyes! It's absolutely awful. I was advised to slow the mower engine/speed and that will fix it and it did NOTHING! The bagger is the 1st time Gravely did their own and it's AWFUL. The bags are WAY too behind the mower so if you're driving along side of a structure or fence, you can't just turn away from the structure normally b/c the bags are so far behind the mower, turning normally, the bags crash up against the structure. Literally the only good thing about the Gravely ZT 42 is the Kawasaki engine. I'm selling this mower despite having it for ONE season!!!
I will not buy this mower, terrible designs. 👎
Why
You sound like you know a little about having a mower. So why get on youtube and cry . If you saw all the flaws before you bought it, then why buy it then complain. You either like it or not. Stop crying about it.
Bro, there is no crying in this video. Maybe you have never seen an honest review before, but I tell the good the bad and the ugly. My reviews are made to point out all the flaws so that someone else who is considering the purchase of this machine know exactly what they are getting. Buying a mower is not like buying a car. If you want to see it cut you basically have to buy it to find out. This is a $3400 dollar machine, you wanna buy it before you try it just to find out it wasn’t what you wanted? That is what I am trying to help people with. I took the hit so they don’t have too.
@@LansingLawnServiceLLC check out Dan's vlog and see what he says about the gravely ztx. Totally different from your perspective. Maybe I use to strong of a word ( crying ) . I apoligise sir. I just cant see why a person would buy anything without investigating or doing simple research on it. I do understand you're trying to help future buyers. Enjoy your machine.
Michael Whitfield I have seen Dan’s review and that was one of the only videos out there that I felt was honest. However, that being said, Georgia has warm season grass types, Michigan has cool season grass types. They are two totally different cutting conditions. Our grass here is thick and tall and holds a lot of moisture. Georgia’s grass can grow tall but it is thinner and it is typically pretty dry.
@@LansingLawnServiceLLC ok cool n thxs for your input. Question. Up here, people favor john deer, exmark, gravely, and ariens, for the average home owner with less than a acre. I was looking at the gravely ztx 42 or ariens 42 inche. Had bad experience with Toro and cub cadet. I do know ariens is the parent company of gravely. I've look at snapper, hustler, and husqvarna. Only interested in two. Gravely and the ikon 42 in. Exmark might be a good machine but after viewing it. It doesn't appeal to me plus it looks cheap for the price tag.
Michael Whitfield when you say up here, where do you mean? Michigan?
