  • Check us out at the NEW Lawntrepreneur.com!
    Today we’re going to be sharing with you guys 4 different ways where you can sharpen a lawn mower blade while on a budget. There are dozens of tools and techniques out there, but today I wanted to share with you 4 popular cheap ways to sharpen a lawn mower blade.
    Now I know RUclips has about 5,000 videos on how to sharpen a lawn mower blade, with most of them being junk or bad advice, but because of a new product that came out over winter, I wanted to do an updated video on this topic. We share with you guys 4 tools to get the job done, including the newcomer, the All American Blade sharpener.
    Now none of these items are sponsored or anything of that nature, these are just 4 techniques and tools we’ve used over the years. More recently the All American Blade sharpener has become really popular, so I wanted to share with you guys how it works, and weigh in for the little time that we’ve had it. I think this is one of the coolest new items out when it comes to sharpening lawn mower blades, especially if you’re trying to not blow the bank account out of the water.
    Have you guys used any of these tools before? What do you guys use to sharpen your lawn mower blades? Do you guys stick to the good old fashioned angle grinder, or have you guys adopted a more sophisticated approach? Let me know in the comments down below!

      The All American Blade Sharpener looks pretty impressive but how does one use it if you have a for instance Mulcher high lift blade like the Oregon blades I use on my ExMark 48" Pioneer zero turm mower? These blades have curves and are not flat from end to end?

    I just got my All American Sharpener 5005. It is a high quality, well made tool. I prefer the cone type balancer because not only does it balance the blade from side to side but also front to back. I try to keep my blades balanced both ways. I never take extra off the sharp edge to balance it, but either grind the very end, or the back edge depending on the way it needs to go to balance/level it. Thus it preserves as much blade edge as possible for longevity. I don't know where I learned that, but I've been doing it that way for over 40 years. Thanks for the video.

    If you switch your hard grinding rock for a zirconia flap disk in 40 or 60 grit your blades will last much longer as you won't get the heat transfer that you would normally get from a hard grinding stone. An aluminum oxide flap disk would work as well, but the zirconia cuts cooler and lasts longer!

    All American Sharpener is simply the best tool to sharpen blades. I bought mine last year and was blown away with how it allows me to sharpen like a pro. I had been using a grinder “freestyle” for years. Once I used he AAS I was embarrassed at how bad my angles were. Originally bought the one for mulching blades was not the right set up for me returned and bought the one with all the all the adjustable angles. Love it that I can change the pitch to match the original angles. Also purchased the Honda blade adapter and it works great. Had trouble with my high lift Toro blades. Emailed company and they promptly returned my inquiry with the solution. Highly recommend the vice and company.

    To balance your blade, drive a smooth,thin finish nail (6, 8 or 10 penny nail) into the side of your workbench.
    Place the center hole of the blade on the nail horizontally, the heavy side of the blade will drop down.
    That's all you need.
    You do not need to grind nicks out of your blades, just get a sharp edge and leave the nick, if there is one.
    You don't need a two hundred dollar guide to sharpen your blade. Eyeball it and check for balance on the nail.
    You are cutting grass not hair.
    Save your money, Happy mowing!

    • @robertheinkel6225
      @robertheinkel6225 5 лет назад +8

      The nicks are removed to prevent the nick from cracking, and possibly breaking. As far as using a nail for balancing, several RUclips videos have shown using a nail is not very accurate. You can buy a balancing tool for a couple of bucks, and they last forever.

    • @udavidism
      @udavidism 5 лет назад +19

      @@robertheinkel6225 The great thing about living in America is we are free to choose what ever we want.
      I said nick, as in small notch in the cutting edge of a blade. A small nick is not going to cause a blade to break unless you are in the habit of carving concrete, large rocks or hitting stumps with enough force to stall the mower.
      Even then the nick is not the reason the blade broke, hitting the concrete sidewalk, curb or driveway is what broke the blade.
      But by all means if you like to grind away the length of your blade to remove a nick, have at it. It's not any safer nor will it cut any better. Buy lots of blades, your choice.
      I looked at some of those videos on RUclips having "salesmen" show how their blade balancer worked better that a nail.
      They are all using large framing nails and one of them even looked like he had a rough galvanized nail.
      You should have noticed that I said a smooth, thin finish nail, they work just fine. The blade will not balance on a piece of rebar either.
      The balancer and the nail both work on a pivot point, the pivot point needs to be small.
      However if you want to unnecessarily spend money on a dedicated blade balancer because you think the physics are different, have at it.
      You probably pay someone else to sharpen your blades anyway.

    • @hiscifi2986
      @hiscifi2986 5 лет назад +5

      Nice Video... The free-hand Angle Grinder is most likely the best option, but I have noticed there are different grades of disk, some have lots of resin and last an eternity, but only polish the surface, others remove tons of metal but soon wear out. To balance the blade, I set it flat on the bench, then slide a welding rod under the central hole. By twisting the rod you can soon get the balance point, if it is off-centre, the blade is out of balance.

    • @johnbelvin5216
      @johnbelvin5216 4 года назад +11

      I quit balancing the base, unless it's obviously way off when I put it on a nail. During use the blade gets unbalanced by build up of crap, if it's off balance a bit I don't worry about it, never had a roblem in 40 years of an unbalanced blade causing any problem with vibration or wearing out a shaft, bearing, seal. Just saying. My belief is blade would have to be way out of balance to cause a problem.

I leave a 9/16 end wrench and a file beside where I park my mower. Pull it out, take the blade off and file it right there and put it back on. 5 minutes about every 3rd mowing and keep a nice sharp blade. Oh and a sharp blade makes a huge difference on how much fuel it takes to cut and how long it takes. I'm sure the filing pays for itself in cutting in half how often I need to go fill the gas can. PS screw modern gasahol and the modern gas cans! I will pay extra for non-bs gasoline and continue to keep my 25 year old heavy duty plastic Eagle pg-1 can that has no safety device of any kind, out of the sun and use it till I die.

    Dear Brian, The thing you call an L is not designed to have the mower blade to hit, it is a gauge to be used to see if the blade is bent. How to use is you touch it against the back side of the blade on one end and then swing the other end of the blade around and if the blade is not bent it will touch the back side of the other end, if there is a distance away or if the gauge goes past the other blade end when checking, then the blade is bent. Look Brian you do a great job of explaining everything and you are too the point. Good job!

    If you are going to use one of those super-duper precision bearing blade balancing tools, you really need to remove all the caked on grass glaze from the blade first. They advertise that the weight of a single sticky note can cause the blade to register unbalanced so imagine what all that grass debris does? The absolute BEST tool for removing all that caked on grass debris is a Dewalt knotted wire cup brush for your angle grinder. It can clean an entire blade back to like new in just a couple minutes.

I mark the heavy side with a keel marker so I don't take material off the wrong side. My blades last three seasons (usually) mowing two acres sometimes twice a week in the spring or summer. This method is cheap, used a long time with no fancy equipment, and easily sustainable. The pros may afford these gimmicks, but I cannot afford or need them.

    When I used to cut my own lawn I had a Deere 2 cycle 21" mower and six sets of blades - don't ask I am a bit OCD. But I cleaned the deck every mow and replaced the blade at the same time. Lawn was GREAT! And since I had both rocks and roots in the lawn I could take the nicks out before they ruined the blade. For sharpening them I was old fashioned and used a 12" Mill Bastard. BUT since the blade only had one cut on it I could mimic the original angle after a while. Then I started to travel for work and that was the end of mowing grass - no time.
    I hired a landscaper new in the business with his wife. After a while, I took a pair of scissors and cut some grass so I had the top cut ith his mower and the bottom cut with my scissors. I showed it to him and told him that his blades were dull. I suggested that he buy a second set of blades and change the blades every day - and scrape under the deck. It worked to a point. Then he bought two more sets of blades and a commercial sharpener. The older blade were saved for bagging in the Fall. Not only did the lawns look fantastic to the point he hired someone to keep up with the volume but his fuel bill went down 15%. And the amount of time to mow a yard went down as well.

    I have a 60" mower deck wit three blades that are 5/16" thick. I set up a jig on by 6" bench grinder but the coarse wheel still takes forever. A 40 grit wheel on a hand grinder like you showed is ok with that jig but that's $$$. I picked up a used 1" belt sander a while back to use for other things but if you use a 40 Grit belt it does a pretty good job. I can use one hand as a back rest to hold a 30 degree angle and just drag the blade through. When you feel the blade getting hot just move to the next one. By the time I get finished with the 1st end of the third blade, the first one is cool enough to do the 2nd end. It's not perfect but it works for me. Thanks for your great videos.

    Well done young man... I agree, take the 1st (2) items and can them. For the last (28) years now I have used my bench grinder & I eyeball my angles. Never wear gloves, sound advice. Hearing & eye protection, YES. My procedure goes like this: I do 2 or 3 passes on the med. stone, flip the blade & do the same on the other side. I then begin the real sharpening on the fine stone & repeat the procedure back & forth until I have my razor sharp edge with a smooth angle across the entire blade width.
    This season, for my initial sharpening I tried something a little different. I clamped my blade into the vise & used my paddle grinder on them, ( free hand ) with good results, but not perfect. Word of caution, a paddle grinder can take a lot of material off real fast. In the end, I finished off my sharpening with my tried & true method, the bench grinder...
    However, I am quite impressed with the " All American Blade Sharpener " jig because it maintains that constant 30° angle & should allow the user to have better control over how much metal they are removing.
    I will indeed click on the links provided & have a closer look at these options.
    Thank you,
    Bill on the Hill,
    Vermont, USA... :~)

    My Honda HRX2175HYA lawn mower came from the factory with the blades sharpened to 25 degrees as measured with my digital angle gauge. I ordered replacement blades and the new blades also measured at 25 degrees. I use a wire wheel to remove all of the grass from my blades before I sharpen them so that when I finish sharpening the blades, I am just balancing the blade and not a blade caked with grass. I put the blade in a vise and use a 4" angle grinder with a flap disc and keep checking the angle with my digital angle gauge set a 25 degrees.

    Dremels sells a blade sharpener attachment for $15 at HD and Lowes it sets the proper angle and hooks up to your Drexel. I use it for my commercial walkbehind John Deere and my Honda dual blade mower. The most important thing in sharpening is the Angle of the cutting blade. Most people ruin the cutting angle and the blades of cut grass don't don't exit the mower properly bunching and clumping up. Try it and ditch these methods as they are expensive and cheap methods are dangerous. If you do buy plenty of bandages

    Hi, came on to Utube to watch SPACEX news and got side-tracked just a bit when your video caught my eye. I did a lot of double-checking and ended up ordering an All American Sharpener 5005 which should arrive in a couple of weeks. Although not as costly as the dedicated machines it still ends up being very expensive with our terrible exchange rate and insane freight costs to Australia. But it should still pay for itself eventually - in more ways than one. I have a stack of blades gathering rust and dust that I'll be able to revive. Instead of paying someone to sharpen one set a year (or getting conned into throwing another new set on!) and using them until they're completely rounded off will be able to regularly cycle a freshly sharpened set. Thanks for the great video which brought this tool to my attention.

    Nice breakdown, very informative, the grinder is definitely ideal, my 1st job was grinding steel and aluminum parts for a screw machine company, must have spent close to 500 hours on that thing… just clamp it at 30 degrees and you’re done.
