Definitely one of the best blade sharpening vids I've ever watched. Your neighbor knows his stuff give him a thank you from us. Always appreciate the vids
I’m glad to see that you sharpen toward the blade and not away. The same way you would sharpen a knife. A lot of the gadgets that are for sale that you connect a grinder to sharpens away from the blade.
I've been using a c clamp, a cement block, and a flap disk on my angle grinder. I also check the angle with a digital angle finder, (30 degrees). I recently bought an all American sharpener that allows you to take less metal off with a perfect angle. I have 30 customers and sharpen several sets of blades at a time. I change blades weekly.
Great video! Thanks for sharing! Curious question, when you put the blades back on the mower, do you use any anti seize? It was suggested to me to do so and I'm just not sure why
picked up a 4 1/2" Milwaukie angle grinder, a 40 grit flap disc, & a balancer this fall. Made myself a lil stand with a vice on it to sharpen my own blades this summer. Been working good so far. I still want an All American Sharpener though.
I'd love to have a 2" belt grinder. I have settled on the 4 1/2" hand held DeWalt, with flap discs. Works really well for me, and I'm not a pro; just a homeowner and DIY-guy.
I'm only about halfway through the video but I thought I'd stop in here real quick to comment. Every time I see someone sharpen a lawnmower blade with a hand file, which isn't very often, I immediately think of the movie "Sling Blade" and Carl standing there putting a sharp edge on one just like he is here 🤣. Actually that's something I need to get, a nice hand file, I don't have one like that actually, I have a couple small ones but not like this one. I usually use a 1 inch belt sander or angle grinder but the hand file seems like a good idea 💡!
I'm guessing by his accent that he's probably from the mideastern or northern part of Ohio, could be wrong because there's many different accents in Ohio. I'm from southwestern Ohio in a town called Middletown. A lot of people from the south migrated to that area years ago because of the steel mill and many paper factories among other industry there to find good jobs so there's a lot of southern accents in southwest Ohio because of that. For instance my parents and my dad's sister and her husband migrated to Middletown from central Kentucky back in the mid '50s. My Dad retired from Armco and my uncle owned his own awning and home improvement business for many years there.
Just want to jump in here real quick, I think what he was trying to say earlier in the video about temper in the steel and trying not to get the edge too hot when sharpening with say an angle grinder or some other tool that can generate heat quickly is that the blade probably has a certain temper or hardness in it from the factory and if you put too much heat in that edge by trying to sharpen it it will remove some or all of the temper there and cause it to be too soft to hold a good edge for very long, that's why he's dipping the blade in water when sharpening on the belt grinder, so that it cools the blade quickly and holds it's temper or hardness and doesn't become soft on the edge.
Dave, would you mind sharing you email address? I want to send you something. You can send it as a DM on instagram if you don't want to post it hear. My instagram is @thelawncarelife
I go with a flap disc on the angle grinder. I do have some of my Grandpas' old files that can put a quick edge on the blade, usually if done more often and inside the house. No one wants to hear the grinder in the basement.
On newer 1/4 thick blade that are as hard as a rock I use a 7 inch disk grinder and get a 30 degree angle on the blade. I always grind going down on the angle. If you go up and the angle on a belt sander if it catches it can mess you up bad. I guy at the tool and die shop did this on a mower blade and it was 8 inch belt sander catch the blade tore the belt and tore the skin off most of his two fingers. They had to sew his finger to his groin area for blood supply to save his fingers. That was the most dangerous machine I hated to use. You never new when it was gonna get you. We used it on steel up to 6 inches down to 1/8 to round corners off and welds. When you do this I try for 1/2 wide distance on the blade which mike make it closer to 25 degrees or up to 30. If you get lazy and put a 45 angle on the blade it causes the grass to get jam up more on the deck. With the 25 to 30 degrees it fans the grass out and under your deck hardly any grass will be there. I clean my deck once a year and change the blades once a year. I only get 1 sharping on a used blades as a set of 3 on my 61 inch ferris zero turn and my 60 inch BX Kubota as you increase the angle between blades and it misses the grass making a strip. My deck on my Kubota they ground the blades on a 45 degree angle which cause a lot of grass to stick to the deck then come out as clubs of grass. Put a 25 to 30 inch angle that make the angle 1/2 wide. Boy it fan the grass out great. Even if the grass is thick it will still just fan the grass out. You have to slow down to get a good cut. I see way to many people mow so fast the next day half the grass was missed and looked like crap.
Hand held Belt Sander Much friendlier and safer and easier to accurately sharpen blades instead of a grinder It's actually ridiculously easy 🤩 All major and cheapo took brands have them I have a Cheapo Handheld Belt Samder , I don'ts use it much, it has lasted 10 - 15 years 😃 And there are plenty of battery models available, so you use it anywhere
hi there, proud subscriber here. I was wondering if you do shoutouts on your channel. Like you, me and my wife started a lawn care channel here on RUclips. We are a relatively new channel and could use some help getting our name out there! Keep the awesome videos coming!
...annnnnd-yet ANUTHR, blade-sharpening 'tutorial' where-in, ther'z NO-mention-of, removing material from the back-side of the blade, to PROPERLY-balance the entire-blade. WHY the neglect of info....??
Mike is really good - I learnt a lot.
Many thanks.......all the way from London !
Definitely one of the best blade sharpening vids I've ever watched. Your neighbor knows his stuff give him a thank you from us. Always appreciate the vids
He's very talented
I love the collaboration and the funny story! I watch forged in fire all the time!
If you get time, go back and watch the episode where Mike wins. He is very talented
Finally!!! *Edge geometry* gets some love!
Eyeballs precision. Awsome.
Great video 👍 that was very interesting and knowing he was on that show and that you two know each other makes it that much more cool, thank you!
I appreciate you watching the video and leaving a comment
Nice but missed mentions about balance the weight of both sides of the blade.

You also noticed !
At the 14 minute mark, dragging grinder away from blade, big deal about eye protection, ever see what happens when a abrasive wheel explodes ?
what kind of a file should i buy ? I Your video is very informative !

All American Sharpener. Will keep the factory angle on every grind.
Yes, I have used one of those also. Works great

I don't but I think it's a great idea. When my blades get stuck, I typically use PB Blaster to loosen them up

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great video, thanks for the tips.
Ear plugs, and safety glasses are a must for PPE, yet you forget gloves.
Grinders aren't to gentle on flesh!
No sir, Gloves and "spinny" things do not mix well.

Belt grinder was pretty awesome.

Fascinating! Thank you

I remember him on the show
I thought he looked familiar 💥🇺🇲💪
Surprised you didn't talk about balancing the blade!
Cool

There's something I haven't really given much thought to. I might take a look at your Channel
I just sharpened mine incorrect, I ground into the edge, he ground back from the edge.
You should get some goats to eat your bush and then make a video how to sharpen their teeth
Man I thought I was looking at Tom Brady

I don't think it is necessary
