Small Faces, Humble Pie. With two bands like that to his credit, Mr. Marriot should be a household name.
check out his live version of Black Coffee:)
Amen.
@@gregormiller4037 That's the one I asked for a few months back( Black Coffee),He went way too soon!
@Chris Richardson He is a household name in households containing knowledgeable music fans.
I'll be 70 next birthday and from 16 seeing my first concert of 'famous' artists (The Beach Boys) and a year later, sneaking into the local pub to see a local band (coincidentally a trio), over the 50 odd years since, the amount of live gigs I've been to, from the back street pubs, clubs, theatres, concert halls, and football pitches runs into the thousands. When I'm waiting at the pearly gates and St. Peter says 'You can go back to just one gig' whithout any hesitation it would be to the mid eighties, JB's club in Dudley to see Steve Marriott's Packet of Three.
As I'd never seen The Small Faces and somewhere in the 70's, was left gob smacked seeing Steve on the Old Grey Whistle doing Black Coffee, the opportunity to see genius was not to be missed. Clubs have always been my favourite venue to see a band, I like the situation of being able to get up close enough to see the sweat running down the faces and the 'nod and a wink' interactions of the musicians. That gig, that night (same era and line-up as this clip) even to this day, has been the best night out going to see a band. The one thing you didn't comment on too much, which is important for the audience, even if they're not consciously aware of it, is the sublime use of
Such a big voice from such a little guy.
RIP Stevie.
Amen.
Probably the greatest rock vocalist ever, I mean Tin Soldier need I say more...
I agree..the greatest 45 of the 60s....in my top ten of all time !
From this same concert him doing Five Long Years is one of the best performances ever.
Steve Marriott is still a favorite of mine! And he always will be! RIP brother.
👍
Thanks so much. Steve & Small Faces were so underrated back in the day. Rest in Peace, Steve.
Yes the grit in his voice is unbelievable and he hardly takes a break from it . Great video Fil !
Thanks Sandra!
Steve Marriot was a little guy with a huge amount of energy, right from Small Faces to Humble Pie I think he was THE cutting edge of rock vocals influencing some of the greats like Robert Plant. I bought the album Rockin the Fillmore in 1973 which educated me early on. However it was years before I made the connection with Small Faces and appreciated what a capable guitarist he was.
👍
Well done! Marriot could perform a song 5 different ways and make you love every one of Them! Have many of his recordings and play them often! Definitely my inspiration and why I play guitar Today! Thanks for sharing brother!
Cool!
It was like he reached down into himself as far as possible and brought it out what he found in his voice. Incredible performer and musician.
Amen.
Stevie Marriott was fantastic, him and Steve Winwood were my favourites when I was a teen.
Cool!
I love how Steve’s soloing is so musical as you say. He was a beautiful player and willing to step back when Peter was around.
Me and a friend used to follow Stevie whenever he played around the London area... I've lost count how many times.. One of my favourite ever....R.I.P. Stevie x
Man I have been playing Smokin by Humble Pie lp for weeks now ,that is a true example of a early 70s stellar album and he puts his name on it all . Small Faces ,what a band that was also.
Yeah!
If I had to pick a favourite band it would be the Small Faces they were absolute genius and a lot of that was down to Steve's energy and dynamism. I like to play a lot of covers but I never feel I can do justice to any song the Small Faces did, they were a special band indeed.
Wonderful trio!!! Grew up with a drummer of a band as a father so I recognize this song but never heard it again till now!!! Wow, it's crazy how some things bring up memories! My dad passed away last year but this brought up a good fun memory! Great analysis as always!
No problem!
Yes it is Jerry Shirley on drums. Steve Marriott was and is my all time favorite performer and vocalist who had, dare I say it, the best British soul voice ever. And his guitar playing skills are often overlooked. I cant recommend his autobiography "Steve Marriott All To Beautiful" by Paolo Hewitt & John Hellier enough, its a great read...
RIP Steve you will always be remembered.
Amen.
Hi Sid. Have you heard the song Autumn Stone ?
@@halcyon289 Indeed, beautiful song.
The Jerry Shirley memoir, Best Seat In The House, is also a very good read. My second concert was Humble Pie opening for Ted Nugent in ‘81 in Bakersfield, CA. Rock on! 🥧
I THOUGHT that was Jerry Shirley. Very cool!
Thanks Fil. Steve Marriot was a force of nature. Small Faces is essential listening. Ogden's Nut Gone Flake is a must!
👍
Steve Marriott one of the best ever, one of my all time favorites, I do like how he sings Black coffee, actually I like all he does, he is so cool, cheers for the review Fil 👍👍
What a voice! Wow!👍😎🎸🎶
@brad zybola Thanks!☺
👍
@brad zybola Wow! I'd love to see one. The Mopars are few and far between. Not a lot of them at car shows in Pa. where I live. My stepson and I took ours to several shows this past summer. He took 2nd in his catagory. He's got a '68 Dart with a 383. Badass and Fast!👍😎
@brad zybola sounds like a great car show! I was thinkin yesterday that I'm pushin 60! Holy 💩!!!! I still feel like a kid! I was spinnin the tires on the wifes big Dodge truck this morning!😂 I loved the vans you mentioned. So cool. A friend had one and had a different babe on it every time I saw him! Ya and the son's '68 has a 383...a freakin beast! He did a burnout over 300 feet long this summer! Smokin those tires! Crazy!😂
@brad zybola ya, with his Dart, it's an automatic that's been beafed up. You drop it in low1 and tromp the gas. Smokes em, then click to 2nd and it smokes em again! Gave me goosebumps when I drove it! That dream car of yours would definitely get me in trouble! We had a lot of rain here and I was screwin around a little with her truck. Gotta have fun!👍😂
One of the greatest vocalist and guitar players ever!!!!
Massive Steve Marriott fan Phil....very inspirational. He's the reason I picked up guitar...and also hope you're feeling well after your covid episode 👊🏻❤️
Steve, his playing, his singing, his passionate performance:
"It's all too BEAU-TI-FUL"!!!
One Of My Favorite Shows Was "Humble Pie" & "Robin Trower" On Same Bill. Thx 4 This Video. Oh Yeah Blue Oyster Cult Was There Too.
Me too at the Sam Houston Coliseum Houston Texas
@@shanet9079 Maybe It Was Same Tour, I Saw Him At San Antonio, Texas Municipal Auditorium.
Nice!
Great. Just spun I'm Ready. HP Performance.. Fan since '72.
Tears in my eyes.
Steve's gone and PF is sick.
Rock ON while you still can.
Never understood why this guy went out of favour (probably management), and ended up just playing pubs but he himself didn't seem to mind and always performed at top level. I heard an album recorded of these gigs and he would play unexpected things like My Girl by the Temptations with the correct intonation. He was one of the greats rivalling people like Paul Rogers.
After reading his biographies, I conclude that two things led to his lack of later "success". Musical tastes changed in the late 70-80's, but Steve refused to change and stayed faithful to the music he loved. Steve also had many demons and often self-sabotaged. His life is full of "what if's" and "if only's". You are correct that he didn't mind the lack of fame or big $$ that others got. He claimed he was just as happy playing in a pub before 20 people as the big arenas. He hated fame and said money only brought pressures and problems, so he played clubs, collected his cash afterwards and lived simply but well enough. Bless him.
Rumor has it that Jimmy Page wanted Steve Marriott for his New Yardbirds project, but was rebuffed. Absolutely give a listen to a tune called “You Need Loving” by the Small Faces to hear how much Robert Plant borrowed (to put it politely) from Marriott’s vocal stylings and how Led Zeppelin lifted virtually the whole song to create “Whole Lotta Love.”
To be fair Willie Dixon wrote you need love but Plant leaned heavily on Marriott's vocal interpretation. Dixon's estate settled payments with Zeppelin in 85 (no point chasing The Small Faces as they were broke)
Actually it was Terry Reid but Page was warned off by Reid's manager. Jeff Beck said that he was dismayed how much his Truth disc with Rod Stewart sounded to the first Led Zeppelin album. There are some similarities as they both cover old blues songs but I didn't think it was that close except in the general style of music.
Yeah!
Just took your advise and listened to Small Faces “You Need Loving”. The Zeppelin was more Pirate-ship than Air-ship!
The difference is between small faces and zep about that song is that the small faces never said it was their own and said they reworked it from willie giving him full credit ....plant and page said it was zeps completely ....
Hi Fil. Don't know if you have already checked out Five Long Years by Steve Marriot. It may be in this same gig. Awesome guitar work from Steve. Blew me away ! What a talented guy he was.
Thanks!
Steve Loveblues incredible playing by Steve on that one. Check it out Fil!
Lucky to have seen Steve twice and also to meet him. What a guy,,, thanks for posting.
Cool!
One of the greatest singers and frontmen that ever lived. Humble pie circa 70-72 one of the greatest r'n'r bands of all time. Performance, to this day the greatest live album i've ever heard and still one of my favourite records. The Energy! Walk on Gilded Splinters by Dr John - has there ever been a better version than the 24 minutes by the Pie?
👍
The Soulful Little Giant Man ! Thanx Boy ! Keep On Rockin" !
🤘
Great video. Steve is a legend
Love this, it makes me happy ❤️
For me, Steve is the best vocalist ever to come out of the UK. Check out his vocals on The Small Faces song ; Autumn Stone.
Thanks!
@Scotty Good Amen to that Scotty.
Definetly the best vocalist. ...as for vocal performances of the small faces tunes I would definetly say that the best example of Steves incredible voice would have to be "if I were a carpenter" .....
Great performance from a great rocker. Always loved his music always will. Really enjoy your channel Fil. So much fantastic stuff!
No problem!
A cherry on top of the cake, Great video & ANALYSIS! ❤️🤘
Thanks!
Love the playing, love the vocal! Great vid!
Yep!
1973 L.A. Coliseum Humble Pie, with BlackBerries. Live is an unbelievable spiritual. Steve kept playing till management cut bands power off. We kept yelling, MORE.
That's my Hero with Peter Green, Duane Allmann, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, Vincente Amigo, Gabor Szabo, Monte Montgomery, John Fogerty
Steve is the cat left us far to. Young thanks mate ❤️
first solo Steve play the riff from "The Last Time" (Rolling Stones), love him
Glad someone else recognised it !
Another fantastic analysis,Fil you the man!
Thanks Greg!
ES-335 through a Marshall stack. A formidable rock-n-roll machine!
👍
👍 from northern germany - humble pie was my first band listening to (beneath who) with 14, playing table tennis meanwhile with my brother.
A treasure and a treat! ~ Thank you!
No problem!
With a voice like that everyone should know Steve Marriott. Such a great self taught talent.
Came back here after the Humble Pie analysis today, just had to hear Mr Marriot again! He's def a household name in my house!
On this video live in London he plays 5 long years his guitar playing on this is sublime remember just 3 in the band ,
My 1st concert ever was Humble Pie when the Smokin album came out,Montrose opened, Cobo hall,Detroit Michigan. I was never the same.Still have the first album I ever bought in1973,Rocking the Fillmore! And it still plays!
My first concert was 1971, Humble Pie, opening for Black Sabbath (in a roller skating rink), a month or so before 'Rockin' the Fillmore' (last album with Frampton) was recorded. I had never heard of Pie before that.
Sadd loss saw him in a small venue many years ago great rock voice and band rip Steve 🙏
Always loved Steve's voice! My favorite Humble Pie song is ' 30 days in the hole' his guitar and his voice on that one song was so perfect 👌 sad he died so young. R.I.P. Steve Marriott😔 great video 👍😎
Amen.
The performance is great.👏
The perfect voice- AND he plays guitar like that!!??
Man, you've got to love a group like this. With a trio, everybody has to be spot on because there's no where to hide if you suck! Lol.😎. Fil, once again, great review!
Suggestion for future review - ZzTop. Tush? 🤘
Thanks!
Possibly one of our greatest ever lead singers and lead guitarists - mashed into one cheeky chappy. Just fills me with joy listening to him. And he didn't give a f..
Small Faces👍👍👍👍 Great video!
👍
So many well known musicians had said Steve Marriot had one of the greatest voices around. another artist who left this earth to soon. always thought it was cool how the group Small Faces arrived at their name all of the original members where under five feet something. another cool analysis Fil.
😂👍
Steve always liked vibrato, and the opening chords to 'Tin Soldier' way Back in 1967 show this. When Peter Frampton was the Humble Pie guitarist, when he played a solo the band would leave the rhythm of the song and play to his solo.
Legend ❤
Nice! Great tune, great playing, great vocals. Killer guitar too!
👍
Talent 💯 🎸🔨🎤
Excellent show by Steve Marriott and Packet of Three. Thank you Fil, well done.
No problem!
Yes they were a super talented and original band and they had fun doing it, loved what they did. I dont think they got enough credit.
What I would have done for one more Humble Pie album with Peter on lead guitar! RIP Steve!
Amen.
fuk bitch ass Peter
fuk pete
@@robertdefex3439 You have issues friend!
naw it just that Pete is a bitch ass with a bitch ass voice Marriott is god
Hello from the USA, Fil..I've recently discovered your channel and I love it..I really like the fact that you choose so many different artists/genres of music..I would love to see you react to Jonny Lang's Walking Away Live in Germany 1999 or a Kenny Wayne Shepherd live performance video of Heat of the Sun..I also love your cover videos and hope to see a new one soon! You are so talented and your accent is awesome!
Thanks Tina!
Saw Pie in 75 with Robin Trower as the opener! One of the best gigs I ever saw!
RIP Mr. Marriott
Fil, Always excellent stuff
Very popular rock outfit in the late 70's early 80's
Thanks!
It's 7am in the morning where I am so Steve's voice has woken me up. How do singers like him force their voice over the whole concert? - must be quite stressful on the vocal chords. Excellent video and analysis.
I don't think it's a forced sound, it's just great technique that happens to come with rasp!
Gotta absolutely love this spot on brilliant analysis of England's Ronnie James Dio. He was one of the most amazing musicians in rock history. Incredible talent, always entertaining, and missed immensely. If you haven't already, you should do an analysis of Dio. It's hard to pick a period, but I would suggest DIO during Vivian Campbell era. This way you can also have a look at the players he had at the time, all very well known in rock music. Perhaps "Rainbow in the Dark" which was a song nearly discarded, or "Don't talk to Strangers" which showcases Dio's ability ballads.
For gods sake pick videos of Steve in his prime during the sixties. He was mesmerizing and explosive entertainer that had the blues rock genre nailed. Thanks again for the memories but give the young people a taste of the energy and presence this man had in his prime. He ripped back then as well.
I just do the requested vids ☺
When I'm sick I don't need no doctor......just play me Rockin' the Fillmore !
🤘
Great full voice and awesome chops! Band is locked in and tight as! Sounds a little bit like Billy Thorpe! Now there’s a rocker! Great vid Fil !! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Thanks!
Growing up in the 80's if Humble Pie came on the radio, you had to turn that up!
Sounds like a mix of two songs; "Dirty water", and Rolling Stones, "Last time", with different lyrics.
Thank You Fil: I love Steve Marriot and I love your reviews! Go like Elvis, Go Man Go!
This was Packet of 3, Steve's band from the mid 80's. Half of the Pie really with Jerry Shirley on drums. Played a lot of smallish venues in the 80's - i dunno how i missed seeing them because i was/am a huge Marriot fan and saw a lot of gigs back then. Kick myself along with missing SRV when i had the chance....
Yeah he was taken too early like so many unfortunately.
Great track! Very tight band. He was great in the Faces! At 44 He died in a fire, very sad.....
Yeah it is a great shame.
He wasn't a member of the Faces. He was with the Small Faces, left them and founded Humble Pie.
joe22589 Oh ya!! I forgot they became the Faces after he left🙄
Thanks for reviewing Steve Mariott and the Small Faces. Only why not one of the superhits, like Tin Soldier or Itchycoo Park. There the voice of Steve was really impressive. Not only shouting but soft and hard in almost one grasp. This insane talented man deserves that in my opinion.
This show gets an airing often around here. Marriott has been one of my vocal 'gods' since Small Faces. He had been there and done it all by the time he played this show. He had also learned what audience rapport was early in his career, and always seemed to me to play for the crowd. (Treat yourselves to the rawness of Humble Pie - Rockin' the Fillmore, a Marriott entertainment feast.) I know what you mean about pacing yourself vocally (now). I squawked some in the late 70s, certainly enough shows and practices to be match fit. Unfortunately after thinking one night that I was really on song, and probably producing the performance of my life, I was unable to raise a squeak for the next night's gig. That taught me three things. 1...That your voice is yours alone, and trying to channel Plant, Rogers, Marriott, Gillan and their like's sound ad infinitum is nigh impossible, unless you are truly blessed. 2...If you blow your voice, there might just be a band member who thinks you should be able to restring it like (his) guitar, and wants to sack you because of it. :-) 3... OP rum and peppermint cordial (recommended by the bass player, who else?) will not instantly revive your vocal talent, no matter how many rums you have. (It will stop you fretting so much however.....) Thanks for posting this classic favourite. I'm no longer a casual viewer, I have finally subscribed. Peace.................
Thanks! Yeah the vocal cords take a lot of looking after!
I don't know if you'll see this but Steve Marriott was one of the best, Small Faces and then Humble Pie, such an amazing time in Rock and Roll history that I grew up with. Rumor Has It the in the mid-70s he auditioned/ jammed with the Rolling Stones, they were replacing someone whom I can't remember but Steve Marriott got the gig. They were blown away by him, then at a later Point Mick Jagger told the band no, Jagger said he is always upstaging me, it's wild that he almost became a Rolling Stone. It was also very sad when he died in his mid-forties !!
Do believe that's when Ronnie Wood joined the stones. And yes Steve was a better singer than Mick.
Loved him in Small Faces and Humble Pie.
👍
"That voice" Yep
Imo Steve Marriott was the greatest singer and frontman that ever lived. His guitar and harmonica playing was red hot also. No disrespect meant to the surviving members of Humble Pie but it's not the Pie since Marriott passed away
I just started watching your videos about a month ago. Love the way you break everything down. I am from Florida in the USA. However, my favorite bands were from the UK: Humble Pie, Bowie, T.Rex, Roxy Music, Kinks, Stones. It seems like you were born late lol. You belong in my generation 😉. It kinda sucks to know that someone with your talent and musical expertise isn't appreciated like you would have been back in the day. I really enjoy listening to you speak highly of the guitar 🎸 players I listened to! BTW, if you haven't already, could you please check out Paul Kossoff from Free. Thanks, your a real Cool Cat:)
Love this , thanks....oh and you actually look like jerry shirley the drummer...keep up the great work
1:08 - 1:16. Some chords, sound like the Rolling Stones' old song, '' THE LAST TIME ''. Close to the same, but a little changed..... GOOD WORK, FIL !
Another stellar video Fil. To me Steve Marriot’s voice sounds quite similar to Noddy Holders from Slade.
Yeah!
Steve maybe the best Singer ever!
Steve Marriot and Terry Reid had the best voices in Rock!
Great video Fil!!! As you can tell Tom Petty is my man. Do a video on Mike Campbell if you have the time or hell TP and the Heartbreakers. Tom and the band were so tight and great. Mike is always under the radar seems to me. Loved this one and can definitely hear Plant in there. ROCK!
Thanks!
Steve is the real deal no one can fuk with his talent
👍
I can tell by your face that you loved Steve
Great choice, it is Jerry on drums, band was called Packet Of Three and I've had a copy of this gig since it came out on vhs tape! Steve was the real deal as they say and The Small Faces my top band (mod, rock or anything) of all time. They really should have toured the states, Marriott himself said that they should have gone on the back of Afterglow(itchicoo wasn't really what they were about). Glyn John's who worked with most of the big acts at the time reckons if they had of toured they'd have had the world!
Yeah!
Great vocal ability on Steve's part.
👍
Check out Steve's guitar playing & singing on the track "Five Long Years" from the same concert, it'll blow you socks off!
Hi, Fil. Perhaps, you could check-out ' THE ASSOCIATION '' = Live in Salt Lake City, April 3 1970. ONE of MANY GREAT, live performances, of a band.
fil. please analyse Five Long Years, from the end of this same show. I saw Steve twice, with and without Frampton, and never knew he could play like that.
Humble pie "Hot coffee" live version. so awesome
👍
_Black_ Coffee dude
As always, great job. If you can, check out, Black Coffee. I think it's Humble Pie. You can see how soulful Marriott was. Oh yeah, ROCK!
Thanks!
I feel like I want to buy their T-shirt after watching that.
👍
