Big George. All while making the five count flow like it was common time. It is truly hard to wrap one's head around how much guitar is being played here.

Because he sings, I think a lot of the general public doesn’t realize how badass of a guitar player Benson is. There are a ton of all-time great players who are fans of him, from Tommy Emmanuel to Michael Angelo Batio.

Most people think of a couple of his R/B hits, and really overlook his full talent.

Tx for that Fil. My fave guitar video. My only other comment is that after missing a couple of notes in the intro, George just closes his eyes and goes into a trance like state where I'm not even sure he knows where he is going. That is pure instinct backed up by top level skills.

George can do it all!! Not only is he a Top Player; he sings several hit songs. He’s a great vocalist! A hero to me; I love everything he’s recorded... I recommend the George Benson Cookbook, great album....Thanks for a great V.A.🤟🏻

I first heard _Take Five_ in 1959 when the Brubeck Quartet album first came out. I was 8 years old. I first caught on to George Benson in 1976 when his album _Breezin'_ came out.
Both of those albums have been in my "permanent rotation" since then.

Nice work. Another guy i read about before hearing him. This goes back to circa '74 with a GP cover story. Friend was learning Stanley Turrentine's "Sugar" so i bought 'The Baddest Turrentine" or whatever that great 4 song CTI disc was called (couldn't find it just now) a year later. George Benson on the tune i bought it for. man, one summer afternoon a year later , KSAN plays a great intrumental i hear for the first time. That tune was Breezin'. Won a Grammy. I still cop it from time to time.

You have made me happy with this, as I did a quick search on Google. For some reason, I thought that George Benson had passed away some years back, but I found that he is indeed still with us. Long life and much prosperity to George! I first saw him when I was a youngster, on TV way back in the 1970's, playing and singing "On Broadway", and he was as amazing then, too. And thumbs up on your video reaction!

The Summer that "This Masquerade" came out, I found myself in the front row off to the side, about 12 feet away from George in a small club in Denver called "Ebbetts Field". The warm up act was Micheal Franks, who was blown away because he had forgotten his guitar strap and was getting to use George's. It's the one on the back cover of the Breezin' album, about 3" wide, black leather with silver globes of differing sizes all over it.
George blew me away, of course. To this day I can't reconcile what my eyes see with what my ears are hearing. His fingers don't move, they float. A true master of the instrument. After watching him that evening, I didn't take the guitar out of the case for three days, it took me that long to digest what I'd seen and put it right in my head. Kind of lost track of him for a while, then a friend gave me a DVD of him, and once again, the same confusion about how what I was seeing made sense with what my ears told me.
But what blew me away the most that evening was his bass player. Came out on stage with his bass on and carrying a tambourine. Plugged the bass into the amp, dropped the tambourine on the floor, stepped in it, and all night long I was hearing expert tambourine playing along with solid as hell bass playing. I don't remember if I heard his name or not, but he was a truly inspirational player. Later on, in a steel drum band, I started playing bass and congas at the same time, hats off to that man, whoever he was. Kudos.

It was Stanley Banks. He’s been in George’s band since the mid 70s and still with him all these years later. In fact, there are several Benson videos on here where you can see Stanley playing the tambourine with his foot. Particularly the older ones from the 70s and 80s. wow. NEver saw this one. He's using same pick slant as Shawn Lane. This was really great even with those 2 or three clunker missed notes at the start of the solo. He is string skipping and muting the middle ones and some sweep picking in there. I just assumed he was like on brooooadway... duh duhduh. hahaha but he was really a badass pentatonic monster back then.

Nice job Phil .my older brother was a jazz fan used to hear it around the house especially Take Five this was years after Take 5 became an iconic sound. as a young guy I listened to rock.
they started playing breezin and masquerade and give me the night all done by George. and that jazz influence caught me right away got his albums and started listening to everything he did. they started playing Chuck Mangione feels so good and a lot of artists added a little bit of jazz. I listen to a lot more now. it's funny jazz an American born music is more popular in Europe than it is right here in America. I think Europeans listen harder to what's being played and recognize something good. a lot of jazz purists like horns flutes drums and other instruments used in jazz. but the guitar is my favorite jazz instrument. it's not overpowering and it's smooth with players like pat Metheny who does a lot of Fusion it's all good thanks for playing this. good luck Phil.

I'm pretty sure he lost it there in the beginning just after the main theme. A pause ,a muted strum and back in like it never happened, if I wasn't a player a wouldn't have thought a thing of it. Surprised you didn't point out to our none player friends the odd time signature of 5/4. Loved George since high school when Breezin came out. Love George Benson! (And Dave Brubeck!) Django Reinhardt does come to mind. There are always incredible artists like him at the Montreux Jazz Festival. *Request: If you can, please react to these songs by young Barcelona-based musicians on RUclips: "-Ain’t Got No - Martí Serra 4tet + Rita Payés", "2017 Mood Indigo Sant Andreu Jazz Band & Joe Magnarelli ( voz Joana Casanova)", "2014 how high the moon RITA PAYES -- JOAN CHAMORRO la magia de la veu", "2016 Flor de lis Rita Payés & Joan Chamorro LUA AMARELA" Thanks! I really do hope you like them - I do! Sorry, I forgot "Stolen moments JOAN CHAMORRO PRESENTA ALBA ARMENGOU"

Great! Benson's cookbook album is an absolute masterpiece in hard swinging jazz! On the subject of jazz shredders, have you done John McLaughlin? Master of the pentatonic shred! The remember Shakti live sessions are alot of fun.

George Benson is simply superb as an instrumentalist, and can sing too (e.g. Breezin'). I'll pass this vid on to my daughter too, who used Brubeck's original recording when she was a 'professional' roadside hulahooper (no kidding) for a few weeks, and when she sold her handmade hulahoops at a street fair. I'll leave you to imagine the crowd of women and girls trying to hulahoop to Take Five - a vision that I'll always remember. (Hmm, a visual aid might be to glue the label offcenter on the vinyl LP @ 33 RPM)

More than once I've heard a song and instantly said to myself, that's George Benson. Am I imagining things Fil? Is it the specific guitar he uses, the way he plays it, both ?
There is one other musician that struck me the same way, that is, I heard a jazz piece on TV and felt convinced it was Gato Barbieri; I was right, it was him.
