Buckman's group, after heavily going out your way to help them, and escaping is probably the most heartwarming event in funger, especially after going back to where Seymor is and reading their note. Their quest always ending in failure since Rudimer is the crow mauler isn't completely a happy ending, but it's fear and hunger, I'll take what I can get.

Fear And Hunger is a game that pretty much realigned my braincells, I'm not normally into overly dark games because I feel they often go in poor taste. but Fear And Hunger not only made me deeply sympathise with the characters, but made me actively want to save them, to the point I was consulting guides left and right to make sure I wasn't leaving anyone behind. it makes me sad that ultimately, we cannot save everyone still alive in either game, because someone has to die to ascend the Girl, or the future remains dark without her guidance. and Termina forces you to be unable to save them all, for example Henryk. but it feels good, yknow, to help the knights in F+H1 and the ghosts in Termina. it feels like even though it may not improve anything in the long run, it still mattered. it was a story, and maybe there was kindness, maybe there was cruelty. but it happened either way.
This game did the opposite to me. Normally I would try to befriend and save everyone even if it's hard and tedious like in Fire Emblem for example. But F&H is so unfair and cruel that I wouldn't mind sacrificing a child or two to get a headstart in the game.(I even finished the whole Trortur side quest for shi- and giggles). Maybe the darkness of the dungeon get to me.
I'm pretty sure that the Penance armor is a reference to the Marvel comic book character and former hero called speedball, who was part of a group of heroes like the teen titans but suffered a terrible accident with a villain who used his powers to detonate himself and resulted in the death of 612 innocent people. When he was hit by the explosion, he fell into a coma and managed to survive due to his ability to absorb kinetic energy, but lost his power when he awoke from the coma. Because of his inconsequential actions, he was held responsible for the 612 lives that could have been saved. After some time in prison, his powers began to shine again, but in a different way: now he could transform any pain he felt into energy and was able to expel it in powerful explosions. Trying to redeem himself, he designed a suit of armor with 612 thorns inside, one for each life he failed to save, these thorns would pierce him constantly, as a reminder of his failure and an ignition for his powers. In this state he adopted the codename Penance and began his quest for redemption. If you research it, you'll see that both armors are not only conceptually similar, but also visually similar
I knew that it was legarde, all along. Only someone as evil as him would not only use, but wish torment upon others, for benefit of "humanity". This is all so miniscule and gigantic at the same time.
I wonder if the spirit who owns the cameo is one of the soldiers? The one who wrote to his sweetheart about having to wait in prehevil a little longer while the Kaiser came to town comes to mind. I think that note may have been found on a corpse unrelated to this spirit but still, gets my cogs turning.

If a dude the size of a fourth grader with a kitchen knife happens to capture you for scientific experiments, it’s probably your own fault. Just think about how many fourth graders a knight can knock down like bowling pins with a single swift kick….
Lots of experience. You don't have to be strong if you are skillful and catch your prey unaware. My guess is these knights were proud of their prowess and so thought the small ruined man not a threat. Only the dungeon doesn't allow such arrogance. All it took was them being unaware during a battle or falling into a dark reverie during times of rest and that would be it. Once rendered unconscious their strength is of little use.

I know it's a popular theory that Woodsman's wife slept with with the goat Black Kalev, but I think there's more to the whole thing. My personal head-canon is that she laid with Black Kalev in his human form, which understandably infuriated the Woodsman, who then used magic to seal Kalev into the farm goat. But his wife had already gone mad, so he beat her up and locked her inside the basement, where she tried to draw Rher's ritual circle so that she could reunite with Kalev after death. I just think that'd be more interesting turn of events than just "hahaha his wife fucked a goat."
Penance Armour and the Knights are really cool. We almost got a playable Penance Knight for the first game as a fifth character, but it was repurposed into the armour which imo is a fair trade
Two more Tragedies of Fear and Hunger: - Finding a soul stone in a trash can then finding a book of enlightenment, but accidentally pressing the book and exiting it without saving, hoping that it would not be consumed. It seems like in Fear and Hunger there is a set of people born with certain Soul characteristics right? I have tendency of being drawn towards dark stories. I consider Little Nightmares and Hollow Knight as some of my favorite pieces of media. But that d*mned orphanage... The moment the music kicked in, I could FEEL the hopelessness. Nothing but pain and sorrow, with the only reminders being a noose, a skeleton, and the ghosts of those locked within the place they so hated.
I think that, after the adrenaline rush of killing the villager and Tanaka has worn off, there's still a little humanity left inside him. For a short while
In my opinion F&H1 is a better game. I like how F&H1 is more punishing and challenging than F&H2. However, F&H2 is more lore-rich and its characters dialogue is so much better than F&H1. I would nominate F&H2 as the best game of 2023 (I know it was released in 2022, but it was Dec so I think it is okay to count it as a 2023 game).

Mau did you forget to blur…the woodsman.
Woodsman doesn't have a pp so it's ok 👌
Found out im a 2% duster listener today but its okay, you posted today Mauthe, so thank you. What was your wrapped?
I don't use spotify, I just look up music on youtube. If I did, it'd probably be a mixture of the albums American Idiot and Americana
duster fuckin bumps
@MautheDoog but what about big lez
@@MYTHONICSThat is ironically pretty American taste
You think doing ending A save the souls from the Sulfur Pits?
I suspect Logic is going to steal the power from Sulfur, but I also suspect that's a question that will never be truly answered

Great. The only time I've ever seen my name in a video game and it's fucking stitches

im shook.
Good stuff.
surprised you didn't use the censor mod for either games, but i don't mind
Technically, nothing in this video needs to be censored 👌
I mean fair, I am just really used to creators doing that even for the woodsmen or the dead body's.
Fear and Hunger is what I consider borderline Grimdark Horror
It is, especially the first game. Seems like any games after Termina will be a different direction though!
God it’s games like this that make me wanna get my pc already I miss out from the indie community
You like to use the word tormented huh? Everytime you said the word, I remember Chambara.
torment comes up a lot in funger 😁
again an amazing video made by a terrific person that takes the time to understand, not just learn. I always love your videos.
thank you very much!
This gives me VaatiVidya vibes in the best way.
14:50 why kill tanaka and later save you?
I think that, after the adrenaline rush of killing the villager and Tanaka has worn off, there's still a little humanity left inside him. For a short while
In my opinion F&H1 is a better game. I like how F&H1 is more punishing and challenging than F&H2. However, F&H2 is more lore-rich and its characters dialogue is so much better than F&H1. I would nominate F&H2 as the best game of 2023 (I know it was released in 2022, but it was Dec so I think it is okay to count it as a 2023 game).
11:43 Not *all* 3, just the one in the Temple.
