First of two videos on the performance tuning of the 8v 1.6ltr Turbo Diesel found in various late 80s early 90s Volkswagen's
Firstly
Turbo Control Pressure Fuelling Adjustment, this involves rotating the rubber diaphragm and matched eccentric cone in a clockwise direction which in-turn allows more fuel to be delivered when the turbo is delivering positive boost pressure.
Secondly
BOV (Blow off Valve) or Turbo Recirculation Valve, this involves rendering the BOV dormant, this is done by adding a spacer on top of the spring so once fastened the diaphragm cannot open, this is due to the stock mechanical turbo pressure is approx. 0.7bar or 10psi whereas the BOV is set to open and recirculate excess pressure at approx. 0.8bar or 12psi so carrying out this will allow extra turbo pressure to be ran.
Thirdly
Max fuelling, this adjustment provides more fuel across the rev range, these engines can do with more fuel in stock form, this is carried out by removing the tamperproof collar, adjusting the stock idle all the way in so the engine is idling around 750rpm then screwing in (clockwise) the max fuel screw until the revs rise to approx. 1000rpm or stock idle.
As you can hear from the last two video sections the stock revs are quite laboured whereas the new revs after the above adjustments are much more responsive and cleaner which just clarifies that getting fuel (and more of it) injected into the cylinder at the right point causes an increase in the size of the combustion therefore more force turning the crank.
Next video will be increasing the turbo pressure

Nice to see a bit of old school diesel tuning again not just laptops and popcorn limiters
Yeah, no popcorn limiters here
So happy I found your channel. I've had a 1.6td out of a mk2 jetta in my rabbit pickup (caddy to you guys) for the last 6 years and it burnt a valve but I'm in the process of swapping in another one and I'm stoked to have these videos so i can properly tune the fuel now. Cheers from Washington State!
Ace, hopefully it helps
You are a brilliant source of mk2 info! Hope to use the knowledge when I get my 1.3 (hopefully I get it)
Thanks
Thank-you for these 2 videos (1.6 TD). I run a '90 Jetta with this engine, 405,000 kms currently. My B/O valve has been deleted for some time, and the air line to the wastegate is pinched closed. Cast iron downturn off the turbo has been replaced by a 2 1/2" stainless unit with a welded in flex joint, same diameter retained to rear with a single low restriction muffler. Car stays cool with an A/C spec radiator, I'm in Northern Ontario. Run 0W40 synthetic year 'round, helps with cold starting in the winter (we can see -30 here), car also has 950 Cold Cranking Amps battery and an electric block heater for really cold nights. Torque makes it lots of fun in the twisties. Haven't turned up the fueling yet, will do so based on your recommendations. Power can be quite a lot of fun on snow-covered roads, I use high-quality studded tires. The car is very capable and tractable in the snow.
Awesome, thats some mileage and its cool to hear its being used in those conditions 👍
Hey Grey Goose, thanks for this first tutorial part. I will perform this procedure on my brothers Mk2 Golf, too this spring. So looking forward to your next part (s) ! 😁
Perfect"!!!! i have an SB engine on my mk1 caddy and im going to stick on azz mls gasket and do timing :) Thank you
Thanks! This came in handy for my Toyota 4runner - VW 1.6td swap.
Glad it helped 👍
Good work , like to see more videos on jetta mk2 engine on higher performance
Ones in progress 👍
This is an awesome video, thank you!
Can you put your video series parts into playlists?
Great work and Awesome videos!
Ill see what i can do, thanks
I own a 1.6td golf 2. Too much fuel and low traction. No one knows much about the pump setting or why in Turkey, how should I proceed. There are very few vehicles here.
Does this also apply to the 1.9Td aaz engine? Just found a nice low k Passat looking to get some more life out of it. That throttle response looks %1000 better mine is so delayed to rev. Asking from Canada, nice video!
Not 100% on that but it is likely that i can be adjusted in a similar way
Just inherited an 89’ Jetta 1.6td. Only 206k KMs on it. Body is near perfect. Needs some TLC with some little details but otherwise a gem. How much power can be extracted from these engines without a rebuild? I’m undecided on doing a swap on the whole engine to something with more oomph. Like a 16v, 20v, or tdi. But if I can suck enough out of the 1.6td so it at least feel fun then I may hold off for now
They can be made to be just as quick as a half decent 16v, 120bhp area with loads of torque
Like 👍
Nice i want to do the same on my Audi 80 b3 1.6 Td
Will transform it, just in the process of making the next part about adding more boost
Hey can i make this whole setup on a 70HP JR engine too? How strong can it be?
Should i do this on my stock JR 1.6TD? I plan on doing the pin and rpm thing will that make some change to it?
I would yes, as once all tweeked on an already healthy engine makes a quick car that still knocks out 50mgg
Bonjour,
Hello,
I bought this same version of Golf more than 6 months ago. It has 230,000 km and for me, it makes more than 80hp, it works like hell.
Only problem is that the engine is quite noisy, cold or hot and it's not the hydraulic tappets.
But the question is, if the previous owners of my Golf have boosted this performance (triggered injectors louder), is it normal for it to be so noisy. Thank you for your answers.
Thanks, they are a noisy engine, you could always try and thicker grade of oil which may quieten it down
@@GreyGooseRestorations Ok thank you for the answer.
My hose from the top of pump to intake is also destroyed, same one as you in the video. What diameter hose do you need as a replacement?
I used 3mm ID pipe so it was a nice tight fit
Combien de CV après sa a peu près ?
How do i adjust my rpm i have a clock
Oo good one not thought about that, by ear at first instance, the rev signal is taken from the alternator.
How does everything effect the fuel economy?
Technically, it should improve as the engine is more efficient, so it requires less input from the throttle to maintain speed etc
@@GreyGooseRestorations That is very true thank you :), where can i get some performance exhaust manifolds? I have seen a lot of them for GTIs but not for GTD
Hi is this engine with the SB code?
JR engine code i think 🤔 tho SB is next to the same
Any dangers in defeating the bov?
Not really, as the turbo wastegate will stop any overboost situations
@@GreyGooseRestorations forgive me my naivety but I thought the purpose of the bov was because the wastegates can get stuck and cause overpressures?
No the BOV was fitted to prevent overboost situations, stock wastegate was set to approx 10psi whereas the BOV was set to approx 12psi. Any additional fuel will equal more boost thus the BOV will prevent anymore than 12psi.
It then only lets you rely on the wastegate for boost limiting.
@@GreyGooseRestorations thanks! This makes a lot more sense. Appreciate your help and great videos!
Is all this mods are safe for a 1.6TD without intercooler? The EGT will be ok?
Yes, should be just fine providing the health of the engine is tip top
Where do you adjust the turbo fueling pressure on a non intercooler engine?
Should still be via the top of the engine fuel pump
