      The amount of possibilities with prototech is massive, and scary. Imagine a prototech railgun. I haven’t been able to see this update’s changes myself since I’m on Xbox, but I’m pretty sure the Factorum aren’t bringing their full arsenal. I don’t even want to imagine the blast radius of a prototech warhead. That just sounds like a nuke.

    I will mention that in the gyroscope test, the single standard gyro performed poorly because of SE Physics stuff, in addition to being weaker.
    Ships at rest will have a drag/resistance to moving, until sufficient force is applied, which the gyro cannot overcome. As such, there is an increased drag and it turns extra slowly.
    This does get negated if you have a sub-grid attached to you (even a single rotor with only a head), and this will cause the physics engine to track your position and rotation much more accurately.
    I came across this when I was trying to build a small railgun sniper about 2 years back, it was firing off-bore (2-5 degrees) because the game wasn't tracking it's rotation accurately, but I put a single rotor on it and it became pixel-accurate.
    The way I describe it and the terminology might not be correct, but it is a thing, I just don't know any better technical terms to describe it.

    • @Zer0sLegion
      @Zer0sLegion  Месяц назад +4

    • @FMHikari
      @FMHikari Месяц назад

      That's just... inertia. Sub-grids make that go away because technically both grids are simultaneously moving apart and closer to each other.

  • @Terminator484

    The small-grid prototech battery appears to be geared more toward behaving like a supercapacitor, sporting a huge increase in the input power flow compared to the standard battery (4x faster). It also takes up a third of the volume. If you replace one standard battery with three of these, you'll have more power available, recharge in only 1/4 of the time, and enjoy lower losses for charging your small ship.
    The large-grid prototech battery appears to be geared in the opposite, to readily accumulate a lot of power and then deliver a huge output to recharge many of the small prototech batteries very quickly.

    Definitely the Small grid thruster, with the jump-drive being a close-second. Previously, between resource availability making large-grids inexpensive, cardboard-fragile small-grids in space having to choose between endurance (reactor-ions) and agility (h2 with small-grid tanks), and jump-drive mobility being large-grid only, single fighter-pilots were near useless against all but the smallest large-grids regardless of their skills. Now the prototech thruster gives them agility to dodge and more than a few minutes endurance, and the jump-drive allows them to not give their home-carrier away and keep up with combat-jumps. If someone really wants to be that elite star-fighter-pilot that main-characters their way through a battlefield full of larger warships with pure skill, now they at least have the chance to try.
    Small battery is an upgrade, you can fit several of them in the same space as a regular one, exceeding the regular battery's output...

    the best upgrade to this update was the AI improvements for the AI blocks. I genuinely feel those differences and they are deeply appreciated for my drones. there are some AI fixes where the AI blocks don't make the drones vibrate in a spot infinitely anymore, they don't drift off infinitely and lose waypoints anymore, they are better at waypoint following... Those AI block improvements are absolutely awesome. Not sure who else will notice them though, but I sure do.

    it makes sense that the prototech drill was added.
    with the addition of true PVE content so many players now need bigger ships and more armour on those ships, doing that with the base drills would be possible but exhausting. the new drill lets ship production happen much faster.
    infact i would bet that a base with 2 of these drills could serve as a constant 3d printer for drones

    Maybe an *prototech AI block* that's a cheap, disposable guided missile block with minimal PCU (costs 1x proto part only).
    Normally a missile needs many AI blocks and extra bits - this would be all in 1.
    And it could also use *proportional navigation/thrust vectoring* (so your missile doesn't need side thrusters against drift, just one engine)
    Or maybe a prototech "fabricator" - that can then allow you to produce these guidance blocks?

    The small grid Gyroscope comparison was a bit inaccurate since you didn't consider the size. Even if the small Prototech Gyroscope is 10 times as efficient, it takes up 8 times the space, so you should have compared 8 to 1. Similarly a comparison between the Drills that considered the space more would have been great.

    @ultmateragnarok8376 Месяц назад

    Y'know, I wish I didn't mind the base ion thruster appearance that much. The actual thruster half of it is fine enough, honestly - it's that boxy bit at the bottom, with its almost smoothed edges that don't match the harsh corners with larger angles of the more recent blocks, and its simple indents to detail the otherwise blank sides, that doesn't fit very well anymore. The two alternative DLC variants to the ion thruster, and now the prototech thruster, are so much better for this reason. They feel more like massive machines and components rather than the almost toy-looking original.
    Can't say the same about the gyro, to be honest - it looks so disconnected from its frame, like it was meant to have the same connections as the base gyroscope but had the frame added so they'd have somewhere to stick the control panel. Also, I really hope it - and the base gyro, which has the same mechanisms exposed - eventually move depending on your ship's movement, like thrusters do, as that would make ships with exposed gyros (or the interior of engineering sections) really look like they should be turning, something SE kind of has always lacked. I like small grid one more, because I've wanted a 2x2x2 gyro for ages for the sake of not having to build so many dangerously unstable layers of them, though I kind of pictured something with only two sides to connect from rather than all six. That said, the small grid one seems like more of a tradeoff, as 10 times better power for a block 8 times the size of its competion, and less versatile in placement due to its size, means its main draw is its power efficiency and the stability afforded by that frame rather than its sheer turning power.
    I'm curious if we'll see more prototech eventually. Anything from simple larger welders and grinders, maybe a small grid drill, or that giant 5x5x12 thruster they joked about on stream, to something like compact tracking missiles or perhaps the other forms of thrusters - ship builders, myself included, would absolutely love some wider hydrogen and atmo thrusters. Think.. a 7x7x3 hydrogen thruster. It would fit with the PCU and performance improvements prototech is intended to solve, like how the drill solves the sometimes-laggy problem of tunnel boring craft doing what they're designed for, and it would look good doing it.
    Anyways, this is your reminder that the prototech refinery violates conservation of mass, giving you more weight in iron than you started with when refining ore.

      That could have a pretty and colorful animation of the lights for deep scanning and also still give normal ore detectors a niche for quick but shallower scans that are passive?
      I mainly mean like instead of scanning every frame over like a minute or so it scans the area when activated, and then keeps the locations visible till either another scan is done, a time limit has passed, or you leave the area. Could be similar to the laser antenna to where it rotates to stay locked onto the area you started scanning.

    So I did the math because I wanted to see, and it turns out the Prototech Drill is less than twice as efficient with the resources compared to the normal drill. EDIT: To spare you the whole paragraph, the final measurement came to a 156% efficiency for the Prototech Drill compared to the regular drill. END EDIT.
    The Prototech Drill gave, on the surface, a MUCH greater yield, a total of 7.3 times the amount the normal drill yielded. WHich is awesome.
    However, we have to consider that a larger yield is to be expected when we're mining out a bigger area. So how much greater is the area?
    Well, thankfully, Zer0 measured the diameter of the circles. It's easy to calculate how much greater the area is.
    A circle with a diameter of 7, and thus a radius of 3.5, has an area of about 38.48 units. A circle with a diameter of 15, which is a radius of 7.5, has an area of 167.71 units.
    So the area mined out by the Prototech drill is about 4.3 times greater than the area of the normal drill.
    A yield increase of 7.3 at an area increase of 4.3 gives us about 1.69 times as many resources per unit of measurement. Or it would if the Prototech drill didn't dig deeper than the regular drill... So at the end of the day, the Prototech Drill is probably not that much better than the regular drill, it's just more convenient to use. I would go with a headcanon amount of roughly 1.4-1.5 times greater efficiency with resources compared to voxel cutout for the Prototech Drill.
    Which is still an improvement, don't get me wrong. It's just not anywhere near as massive of one as it originally seems when we're focusing on the numbers alone. Naturally, the convenience of more than 4 drillings done in a single go is HUGE, and even a 150% resource yield increase is a great improvement to convenience - but that's taking human emotion into account.

    • @Zer0sLegion
      @Zer0sLegion  Месяц назад +1

      Yeah, you can't directly measure it because getting exact numbers is difficult. Looking at the files gives completely different numbers to what I as seeing in game. What I can say is that you are correct, it does have a 1.4x yield compared to a normal drill. I don't know about the exact bonus range though.

    • @sorrowandsufferin924
      @sorrowandsufferin924 Месяц назад

      Hang on, there might be a way to fully calculate this with the measurements we have.
      If we assume the ice sheet has an even depth in both places, which is reasonable because the ice-stone shift appears level when Zer0 is standing in the Prototech Drill hole, then the amount of ice relative to the radius should give us the depth of the cylinder.
      The formula for calculating a cylinder's volume is pi*radius²*height. We don't know the height, and we also don't know the volume. What we do know is that the volume of the cylinder of ice is proportional to the volume of the cylinder of stone. And the yield of the drill is consistent (that's an assumption).
      The Prototech Drill yielded 1616 units of ice and 131 units of stone. This means the ice makes up about 92% of the drill depth of the hole.
      Meanwhile, the regular drill yielded 235 units of ice and 1.67 units of stone. The ice makes up 99.3% of the drill's depth.
      We know the ice depth is consistent, so 99.3% on the regular drill is equal to 92% on the Prototech Drill.
      92 = 99.3
      We multiply both values with 1.0869 to calculate how far the regular drill would need to dig to reach the depth of the Prototech Drill:
      100 = 107.9
      This means the Prototech Drill's total depth is almost 108% of the total reach of the regular drill.
      The Prototech Drill gave 1.69 times as many resources per unit of measurement as the regular drill. This equals 108% of the regular drill's depth capacity. So we divide 1.69 by 1.08 to calculate how much the Prototech Drill mines in the depth the regular drill can reach:
      1.69/1.08 = 1.56
      Therefore, the Prototech Drill is about 156% as efficient as the regular drill. That's better than my estimate.

      @@Zer0sLegion Shouldn't be that hard. Voxel paint a blob, save game, mine it out, see what you get. Reload, change the drill, mine it out, see what you get. Alternatively find a small enough asteroid that it wouldn't take too long to mine out completely.
      Alternatively, rather than just building one drill, build a much larger array of them. While the size of the margin is hard to measure, if we simply build 36 drills in a square, and compare it to 4 prototech drills in a square the margins are considerably reduced. Likewise with throw, put more pistons on it so that distance travelled is larger compared to the margin and it's influence would be reduced.

      @@Zer0sLegion The only 1.4 I can see is the DiscardingMultiplier. However Keen has a specific ore yield definition documented in their API; DrillHarvestMultiplier
      "Gets/sets multiplier affecting amount of ore mined from voxels
      Declaration
      float DrillHarvestMultiplier { get; set; }"
      It is one of the few defenitions with a description and not the even CutOutRadius or the SensorRadius have one. And there is another HarvestRatio specific to each ore.
      Curiously though wheras both the small and large drill have a 1:1 ratio of Cutout and Sensor radious, (Both 1.9 for small, and both 2.8 for large) the protetech drill has a 2:3 ratio (4 sensor and 6 cut). Of the few drill mods I look through they either only use Sensor radious or have both at the same. My assumption is that the cutout radious only defines the area used by the DeformationRatio (0.2 for all drills as default) to influence how the voxels are deformed as seen in the video, the roughnes of the walls and floor is far less 'rough' and the sensor radious appears to limit the area in which voxels can be removed at all.
      The only other differences the prototech drill has are the Speed and DiscardingMultiplier of which the Speed which does not appear to override the DRILL_UPDATE_INTERVAL even though the wiki says it is faster, it is a const and as far as I am aware consts they aren't modified anywhere so I am assuming that it is just the animation(They could say it is faster because the deformation rate of 0.2 applies to the 6m radius rather than 4 meter radius which means that much more than 0.2 inside of the SensorRadious gets removed per update, so it effectively mines around 30% or more of the volume each update compared to the 20% of all the other drills). So I am not really sure what DiscardingMultiplier would do as it really wouldn't make sense why they would call a harvest multiplier a discardingmultiplier. I am assuming it has to do with rightmouse mode. So rather than the natural multiplier of 1.0 (I am not sure if right mouse doubles the radious of voxels deleted or does 1.5, so it would be 1.4DiscardMultiplier * RMode * SensorRadius)
      Because the radius calculates volume rather than a circle 8x the amount of ice makes sence because the volume already tripples from the radius, and unless the pistion wasn't extended fully for the proto drill it also mined almost another full 1-2 meters deep 4r cilinder due to the large cutout area and overall made the hole a lot more cleaner as it could keep up with the piston speed and didn't skip as many voxels as the smaller drill did in the update interval. If you did the same setup and had the pistons extend and retract untill neither drill could extract anymore material it would at most have 4-5x the material of the smaller drill.
      In SE the ore mined is only calculated with the volume of sensorradius and the deformationratio*cutoutratio with sensorradious as cutof. That number is what gets effected by the harvest multipliers and since there isn't one (or it is the 1.4 even if that doesnt make nearly as much sense) it is pretty safe to assume that it doesnt increase yield per voxel but simply harvests a greater % of volume per update.

Unfortunately didn't have any way to implement that and still have a playable game (either break the physics system with insane speed or make getting to other planets impossible). Now with the contact update, not are they keeping jump drives, they are doubling down and added more which is a little unfortunate in my opinion considering how out of place jump drives feel with the rest of the game.

    We've been grinding on Pertam about an hour per day since the moment the Contact update was released and it takes way too long to get enough Prototech components to build anything large grid. We built a small grid refinery, but now wonder if Prototech is a big blunder. All this hype and what good is it? It's new, so everybody wants it and the scrap is worth more than other resources. What's the purpose? Spend weeks gathering Prototech items just to build a Prototech Assembler.... then what... Whoopie you still need to grind and grind and grind to build the next module that you thought you wanted...
    The only real advantage to Prototech is for small grids. You can do so much more with small grids now, but they are easily damaged\destroyed compared to large grid. Also, what is the point of having a small grid refinery, but no small grid assembler? What's the point of the Prototech small grid refinery?
    I like collecting the data pads. Most are two liners and are common, but we finally found one that is a page long and very deep. We've taken out around 50ish planet spawn stations and have very little Prototech (compared to what we need to build an assembler) to show for it. We're going to complete our new ship soon and will then see if the loot is any better in space. Large grid batteries and gryoscopes seem to be the only advantage to Prototech for large grids, but if you have to grind for many real life MONTHS to obtain enough components then is it really worth it?

The drill also makes me angry because I favor a miner that uses a 3x3 checkerboard of drills and the protodrill ALMOST covers the same area, meaning my borer miner gets stuck in its tunnel. I was so hoping to flat out replace my 3x3 grid but it needs about .2 meters more radius. Damnit, Keen... and where the hell is the prototech 02H2 gen?? We have to use DOZENS of those things to get any real hydrogen production!

    i really hope prototech components dont get destroyed when you grind them like battery comps
    edit: ree
    how are we meant to hack/steal the blocks then? also how do we conenct it to our grids?
    why would i want a smallgrid refinary again?
    all of these blocks are just a bit prohibitivley expensive, when will i use these?

    • @Zer0sLegion
      @Zer0sLegion  Месяц назад

      You mostly get the whole block for free during raids. And you connect them to your grid using merge blocks.

    tbh i feel like the small grid prototech refinery is of rather limited usefulness without an assembler to go with it
    you're still tethered to a large grid to actually function and since the stats aren't particularly amazing, why not just refine on large grid too since you'll need to go back there to make parts anyway

    • @Zer0sLegion
      @Zer0sLegion  Месяц назад

      I guess? It's useful to refine on the go as refined ores have a lower weight that unrefined.

    Given the size and power, it would help if you compared the small grid prototech gyro with 8 of the small ones. Remember it is not the power that matters, it is the power/ weight ratio and power/survival chance ratio.

    • @Zer0sLegion
      @Zer0sLegion  Месяц назад

      Prototech gyro weighs less and has more HP. The weight matters more than the size of the block

    But why would you ever need a drill that big? You'd get more stone than you'd ever want since the ore patches are so small!

      Less PCU? 1.4x less mining? Looks cool?

    Be careful when you use magplates to grab prototech!!! Things detach for no reason at random!!!

      I've not had any issues personally.

    I personally think the prototech assembler is completely unnecessary and pointless beyond providing components for other prototech machines.
    I think it would've been better had it instead have been an upgraded assembler that can make components faster with less power usage as well as having the unique ability to make prototech components.
    Or at least have it be a model that you can slap onto your existing assembler and it gains the above stats I mentioned.

      I agree I would have liked an upgraded assembler but having a way to make Prototech Comps to repair the blocks you have is very important.
