I decided to make Blackbeard's coat from the fifth episode of Our Flag Means Death! This is the fancy embroidered coat that Blackbeard wears when boarding the French ship! In this episode, I discuss the history behind these coats as well as the reasons I had for changing up the time period.

Never apologize for not wearing make up, you have the right to not make yourself look pretty for others. You deserve to be appreciated however you look and we will watch and enjoy your videos regardless
Yes!!!
Came on here to say the same. I think she is lovely with or without makeup. She literally has the BEST sm8le on RUclips!
Thank you so much guys!!! :D
replying to heartily agree
I think she looks absolutely great without makeup!
That casual “they haven’t gotten to the death part yet” got me!💀 😅 But, as always, lovely work!
That looks so amazing! The 1700s is such a good era for men's wear. I love seeing you make clothing from this period and that embroidery is awesome
This coat is GLORIOUS! I'm just nuts about embroidery so this coat has me drooling. I was really surprised that those darts went in so unobtrusively. I thought there was no way that could look anything but obviously mismatched! I'm very excited about the finished product!
It’s so beautiful and the little gummy bears are so adorable 🥰😄
So cute! Id be fascinated how you went about digitizing the pattern and adding them in.
OMFG I ADORE HOW IT TURNED OUT!!! ALSO, LOVE OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH, ITS SO FUNNY 💖💖💖
Thanks for the shoutout!! The coat looks beautiful, and what a brilliant idea to sign your name under the pocket flap!
Can you perhaps cut the pattern from the armscye to the tip of the bust dart and rotate the extra material around to there, so next time the dart can go on the plain part of the front and won't interrupt the embroidery?
I love that black dress with the double puffed sleeves at 9:19!
Ahh! Thank you so much! That’s a really interesting idea - I’ve never done anything like that! I’ll try it though!
@@Sewstine Yay! Good luck!
We did a whole bunch of different pattern alterations in my college Fashion course, and rotating darts was definitely one of the easier ones.
I loved seeing that your husband's coat appeared to be in a museum exhibit. Your work is so absolutely exquisite that museums should request to have your pieces on loan. I just hope they don't think that they should let just anyone touch it because it's a "new historically accurate/inspired reproduction."
Every time you mention that on top of what you do here and your job you also have a kid, my head starts spinning a little from the amazement I feel. I don't know how you manage to do all of this with 24 hours in the day, but I'm very grateful you let us be part of your costuming adventures.
Ok this is glorious!! "The darts aren't HA but they're for me, which is not HA either" - love it
Wearable and beautiful! I love the idea of inserting Easter Eggs (aka gummies) in the pattern. While an adorable way to honor your child, it also verifies any compliments that includes mention of the gummies, you know that they REALLY looked at the garment.❤
That coat is GLORIOUS!
Thank you!
So cool to see you doing OFMD!!! I love that you appreciate the show's approach to historical inaccuracy while also exploring the actual accuracy. Can't wait to see more 🏴☠💜
I love those pockets!! and the whole thing! But those pocket? Gorgeous!!
Hitting it out of the park with this coat!! So well done as always ❤
The absolute glee you have is priceless.... !
its on the BBC this week !!!!!! so british humans can watch it now its so so goof
There are some serious Izzy Hands vibes in the sleeves of the black gown you wore while cutting out!
I feel an intense fabric envy for that silk brocade.
That white suit he wears to the bar is just stunning. I’d kill to have it.
I’m so glad I found your channel and your beautiful craftsmanship. I’m also applying to medical school this cycle and love period costumes!
Your skill and enthusiasm takes my breath away. So happy I've found your channel.
This might be one of my most favorite embroidery projects I have seen from you!!! Love love love the pattern and the colors 🥰
Gorgeous fabric, embroidery and total coat. Did it receive the Elspeth and Knightley Paw of Approval as well as Gideon's? Was this made in old or new home?
Thanks Sewstine! This was good motivation to finish my own coat.
SO beautiful. Every single one of your embroidery coats I want. This one is my favorite though I think because purple is my favorite color! Wow.
This coat is magnifique! (Sorry I am French and I just can not find the right translation to this word right now). You never cease to amaze me! Thank you for creating beauty and for sharing it with us. 💖
Magnificent, probably 😉 And yeah, it definitely is.
I wouldn't change the word, since it is based on French Court dress, it is appropriate!
@@m.maclellan7147 True!
It looks amazing!!!
The gummy bears are adorable!!!
I’m looking forward to the rest!!!
I love that you're signing your work. More of Cos Tube needs to be doing this... Absolutely stunning work, as always. Just jaw dropping. Never apologize for taking your time on a project - what you're doing is modeling that this stuff simply does not happen overnight. Here's to healthy creating...
_Technical Question_ - How much does the embroidery distort the fabric, even with the help of the tearaway interfacing? I have a project that I'm working on, a 1950's weskit, that I plan on quilting in the style of the Tristan Quilt for the FR Competition. Right now I'm attempting to guess at how much extra fabric to leave on the preliminary cut pieces to accommodate any shifting of the fabric when I quilt into the wadding and cotton layer underneath. Because, if I get to the end of the quilting and find I don't have any seam allowance left... let's just say the world chocolate supply will be in danger...
Historically they replaced coat linings. Well. Consider my mind blown. Of course they did, it's the most elegant solution to an ongoing problem of slightly acidic human sweat and oils...
- Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
Thank you so much Cathy! So I usually add about 3-5% to the length because of the distortion. But it’s Sooooo hard to predict. But yes - I make it about 2-3” longer and then cut down what I don’t need. Good luck!!!!
@@Sewstine Thanks! Yeah, I was guessing 2-5" extra fabric (length & width). The fish are going to be hand embroidered because that just seems simpler than trying to free-hand-quilt them on the machine. The water will be entirely by free-hand. That part I'm looking forward to playing with. It all seems relatively simple in my head. But I have some chocolate on standby... because... I'll be experimenting with the final fabric... samples will only get me so far, I'm afraid.
Thanks again!
Those are some really nice pockets on that coat.
Horizontal darts!
Am about to cut out the mock up of that same Black Snail pattern for a suit; was in a quandary about the boobs. How serendipitous that Sewstine shows up like my sewing fairy godmother to tell me the HA fix! Was going to do a full bust adjustment but it seemed hinky for an older method of making clothes.
Thank you! 🧚♂️✨
wow the sleeves are such a neat magic trick. So fitted, yet it seems like you have plenty of movement to, e.g. swing a sword. Lovely work!
This is a breathtaking garment made with love by a stunning, gifted woman! #RoleModels ❤️🙏🏼🌷💕🤩
What a gorgeous coat! I wish I had more hours in the day to do even a fraction of needlework, let alone sewing. (I work two jobs) Thank you for all of your hard work in doing what you do and for showing us this coat. I can't wait to see the finished piece. I did notice that you were in your old sewing room in parts of this video, but then it looks like you are in a new place now? The room with the large windows is gorgeous, is that the old house or the new? and that gorgeous black dress with those sleeves! Is that one you made? Looking forward to the next time I see a video from you, and maybe a new look at the new sewing room? Hugs and Love, Jen
your son is right, gummies are the best thing ever 💜💜💜💜
Absolutely love that you signed your work!
If I ever ran into Sewstine at a historical cosplay event I’d probably end up hunting for evil gummies, they’re so dang cute 😊
Lovely coat. The embroidery is fabulous.
I'm really starting to think I need one of those embroidery machines LOL! Looks awesome!
I was trying to count how many needles there were. 9 or 10?
oooh that coat looks absolutely lovely
Just curious if you were to wear your 18th Century stays underneath if it might help to flattern the natural chest and eliminate the need for bust darts?
OK but can we talk about how cute it looks over a dress?
Omg it looks so AMAZING!! 😍😍 I can’t even imagine how many hours of work this took - or how many it would have taken them!😮
looks amazing! I love your attention to detail. Drooling over the lushness of this coat!
mad envy, this is gorgeous!!!
Absolutely stunning! Thank you for sharing your beautiful creation!
The coat looks gorgeous! I'm always so impressed that so many people got inspired by this show, I even made my own coat inspired by it
It’s looking so good! Amazing work!! 🤗
You are so skilled! Such an inspirational and educational video. Can't get enough of your projects. Sewstine, you're amazing!
17th century men’s jackets give me chills, hnnnggg so pretty
This might be my favorite project you’ve done. The embroidery is insane!!! Gorgeous!
I love your embroidery videos. I saw you switched from a Brother embroidery to a Babylock. Can you do a review on them?
Perfect timing, I finished OFMD last night!
Looking absolutely amazing. I want one now... Going to get my materials.
You design incredible embroideries, this was eye popping 👀.... Fantastic 😍 but the gummy bears 🐻 😍😍😍
I also love your black dress, the sleeves are gorgeous ... Can you tell me what pattern you used!
Oh my goodness, stunning coat ❤️
i only just finished watching the show this week, so its amazing to find a recent historical costume related video with it! the coat looks absolutely gooorgeous ❤ i'm also intrigued by seeing an embroidery machine at work for the first time :o
omg, i just love it!! the embroidery is so over-the-top extravagant! love all the colors. love the choice of brocade for the body fabric, too--it adds a touch of interest. you make me want one of these coats for myself!
That's going to be gorgeous!!
Those colours!!! The embroidery with the purple is just a wonderful pairing!
Thank you!!
Another home run! Its just beautiful…wow weee! I love watching your channel….you inspire me to organize my life better and find contentment in making beautiful things. Thank you! 😍😍😍
oh my god pleeeease make video about this gorgeous black dress you're wearing 🙏🙏🙏
literally my dream dress🖤✨
It’s from I Do Declare!
I watched OFMD in one sitting, and it reawakened a severe need to make my own wrapping gown to swoop around the house in.
I absolutely love the pockets ! They look gorgeous, I want to add some like that to a garment now :) and so cute that you can add a little message underneath the flap
Wonderful new video! So, are you in New Jersey? Do you have a new sewing room? Looking forward to seeing all.
Just stunning!! I do love how you break down your process, even though I have no way to duplicate it!! You are very soothing to watch!!❤️
Well said!💜
Absolutely fabulous!
Absolutely incredible!!! xxx
Ahh this so such a fun project!!!! And the coat looks beautiful!!!
This looks incredible
Hi - lovely and can’t wait to see more. I am debating making a French court suit for myself for later this year.
However, I’d love to know about your red linen dress you wear in part of the video - did you make it or where did you get it? It looks lovely and comfy too. I think I need it for my summer wardrobe - which feels silly to say with snow falling outside today but so be it.
Thanks so much!
It's stunning, and your embroidery always blows my mind!
xoxo's Sandie
Sublime !! Bravo !!!
This show is FINALLY coming out in the UK and I am soooo hyped
Beautiful work! 😍
This looks Amazing!!
A truly exquisite coat. Worth every minute.
Amazing embroidery. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Absolutely incredible!! Your take on a court coat is what first brought me to your channel, and this one is beyond beautiful.
Such beautiful work!
Looks incredible!
Wow you did this before e going to Versailles that was ambitious…Black Snail is the best and easiest pattern to follow.
I fell in love with the black dress you're wearing from 9:20. I guess that you made that yourself too, right? The neckline and sleeves are so beautiful. I want one too. 😫
It's actually from a shop called I Do Declare! They do some really beautiful items, I'm hoping to get a blouse from them someday!
@@elinagrooman6301 Wow, thanks for letting me know!!!
Hi! Yes! I do declare - I’m sooo in love with all their dresses! Sorry- I only usually link the dresses I wear for the narration frame - but I do have a few where I narrate wearing this dress too. Highly recommend following I do declare on IG so you know when they restock!
This is absolutely beautiful. You have inspired me to start making my own embroidery files. I've started with some simple ones, but next I'm digitizing my cousins tattoos to embroider on her ceil for her wedding. I can't wait.
Someone local to me is selling an embroidery machine & I must say I am tempted ! But, not sure.. .then Sewstine does THIS !!!!???
Right?!
Fantastique! I can't wait until the next video. Your work is so well done, and inspires me to return to gold thread embroidery. Thank you.💜
Bless the algorithm for suggesting your channel, Doctor. Warhammer 40K and historical clothing, yes please. May I ask, have you a source for Napoleonic War era (1796-1815) military clothing patterns? I’m looking to make a Hussar pattern jacket and can’t find a reasonable pattern.
I’m so sorry! I don’t do that era but that sounds wonderful! thejacketshop.co.uk I had them make my husband a custom hussar coat with aquilas at the neck for his Commissar costume!
Beautiful!
Love the coat! It looks incredible on you!
Gorgeous! I also love those pockets ❤
I just discovered you and I love all your work. Can I embroidery flowers like these on tulle with my Pathfinder.
Those pockets are huge!!!!
It's absolutely gorgeous!
I’m so envious you have an embroidery machine …I would do a hand embroidery but imagine how long that would take me. Wonderful piece you’ve made; can’t wait to see the final product. I’m working on a Summer weight stripped cotton woven fabric similar to the cut of your jacket. It’s a light tan background with golden camel and navy blue colored stripes of varying thickness. I chose a light weight navy woven wool with extreme basket inter woven pattern for the border of the coat and will follow with waistcoat and breaches in the same. I only have the patience to hand embroider the front of the waistcoat ( will do Navy silk on the Navy wool ) but as this is more of an American 1790’s style they were less flamboyant & I might get away with it. Thanks for your video and putting me in contact with Black Snail Patterns. It’s all very helpful.
I love the dress you are wearing at 9:18! Were did you get it? Or did you make it? Love the video. Never mind. I see it in the discription. Thanks a lot!
You are an astonishingly accomplished person! The coat is amazing!
Holy cow it's so gorgeous!! Can't wait to see your ensemble finished. This purple suit is one of my favorite costumes from the show too 🤩
Hi Sewstine, I am a beginner when it comes to sewing and my current project is a faux suede pirate coat (Simplicity pattern S9086). I'd like to add pockets to the coat so the pocket flaps are actually functional. Can you offer any advice on how to properly insert pockets when the original pattern doesn't call for it? I've never sewn pockets before and since I'm dealing with faux suede, it's a little daunting. Thank you!
STUNNING
Exquisite and lovely to see its creation. ❤
