If you don't mind a little work an oversized button up shirt can be quickly turned into a ren shirt. Just replace the top 3 to 4 buttons with slits and some fabric glue to stop fraying. Then lace up with a ribbon of your choosing. No one will see the other buttons once you layer the rest of the outfit.
don't sleep on straw tricorns either. I bought one from a shop in Quebec and it's a blessing to have going to TRF or Scarborough in TX. It really breathes and it's also something that you would have seen in the Caribbean during the Golden Age. Waistcoats and vests are also your friend when being a pirate at a faire, and especially if you don't like a corset.
A lot of people have said that I'm a little bit of a little kid for still liking pirates but you're a clear testament to that and oh my God you are so beautiful
I love all your pirate costume videos! I've been scouring thrift stores for some good boots and poofy shirts for a while, so it's nice to hear a few online recommendations for if I run out of luck in my area!
12:20 Military combat uniforms have had these, forever. They are for "blousing" the legs, tie them above the top of the boot and let the leg hang over. Now, they use elastic blousing bands.
Thank you so much for this video! As an aspiring pirate for Ren Faires this video comes in handy whenever I have any questions! I would love to see more covering more tips and tricks :)
I was doing some research on Disney bounding as a pirate lass going to visit Captain Jack Sparrow and your video popped up in my recommended list. What a happy find. Looking forward to your future videos on other Ren Faire outfits you may have put together, especially using thrift items. I'm on a tight budget, so any way to recycle clothing helps.

Woah… Thanks a bunch for making this video! Definitely really helpful tbh! So, I bought my first tricorne hat (leather) from the same vendor as you and OOF definitely heavy haha. Other than that, you and your channel/content I find really helpful because I want to eventually get a couple pirate outfits going! Last year, my mom was able to win tickets to the NY Renn Festival in Tuxedo. Ever since then, I’ve been hooked! 😂 So yeah! Can’t wait to see more from you! Cheers! ☺️
I have a green pirate looking top that is big on me because it was my dad’s. He wore it with his kilt, sadly he passed away 5 years ago. I could use it.
Love that you are very dedicated to your craft. And the love of all thing pirate!! Thank you for the video. And you for being so beautiful about it and your cosplay of it. CHEERS!!
I love your pirate looks. Been following your short videos for ages. I have the same hat as your brown one, but mine is black, and have to say I think you understated just how heavy that thing is! It feels like they made it out of bricks when you've been wearing it for an hour. Such a shame because it looks great. I have now made my own tricorn out of a felt hat and I'm happy with it as a base but it needs more decoration.
Your house is so cool! From the lighting to the old record player to the period knickknacks, it is just fantastic. Is this just your studio room for filming or do you live in a pirate world of your own creation?

I would recommend checking out medieval collectibles :) the black pirate coat I showed in this video is from there and it was under $200. They have other options that are under $200 as well! Obviously if you’re willing to spend more you can get a rlly nice one but there are definitely options out there for less than $200 that don’t feel like cheap Halloween coats!
I chose a pirate persona for a reenactment event. It was easy, because pirates are agents of chaos that don't believe in rules. They were sailors in a time when merchant sailors had no uniforms. They wore work clothes, or whatever they might steal. So imagine how a rockstar might dress: rags & finery, leather and lace. It's all fair game. No pirate is going to tell another that their scarf doesn't go with the pants. Start simple and work your way up.
I don't know if you remember or not, but I commented on one of your shorts a month or two back that I was story planning for a novel with a main character based off of your outfits and general style. it's not perfect and still unedited but here are the first two pages ❤ Prologue _______________ Arcelia blinked, slowly letting her eyes adjust to the sudden light as the door to her room opened. She didn’t try to escape; the heavy ropes that tied her to the wall proved that course of action useless. Looking up, Arcelia tried to make out who had entered her cell-like chamber. Despite her best efforts, all she could see was a rough silhouette against the light of the outside world. She had been stuck in this room for so long, in complete darkness. How long had it been? Days? Weeks? Months? Arcelia wasn’t certain. “Thought you could use your meal in the light today, darlin’,” a voice called from the doorway. Ay, she thought, so it’s my captor himself. The man walked over and cut her ropes from the wall, holding them as if she were a dog in need of being leashed. As he dragged her out onto the small porch, Arcelia closed her eyes against the light. Hmm, she thought as she was tied to the porch railing, muy interesante. The man handed her a ceramic plate of food, none of which was particularly appetizing. Arcelia had faced many unexpected consequences of her captivity already: the constant darkness had left her skin ashy, and the decrease in appetite had led to loss of weight and a general sickly look. “The people of this town are counting on you eating better, you know. Only the finest of women should be sufficient for the ritual.” It took Arcelia some time to decipher what the man was saying. She had a basic understanding of the English language, yet her childhood in Spain and days spent with Calypso’s French hadn’t granted her much need of it. Both JT and Gino typically spoke in English, as it was their universal language, but Arcelia’s time in this town had allowed for an opportunity to further her fluency in the dialect. “Ritual?” she asked, her accent heavy. The man nodded, pointing to her plate. “Eat up, girl. We may’ve taken you prisoner, but we don’t want you getting sick or starving.” Despite the man’s obvious evildoings, he had a friendly, almost fatherly nature to his presence. He had a way of twisting the most vile of sentences into a kindly and concerned suggestion. The man didn’t wait for Arcelia before digging in to his own meal, stroking his short gray beard thoughtfully. “Yes, darlin’. You’ll be a fine one yet." ~1~ Chapter One ---- Five Months Earlier ______________________________________ Calypso sighed, turning away from the wheel and rubbing her forehead. As she turned to raise the sails, a head poked up from the main deck. “Hey, Cal, want me to lower the anchor for the night?” JT asked, climbing the rest of the way up the ladder and onto the steering deck. “Non, JT. Garder l’ancre en l’air.” JT looked at Calypso with a blank stare. “Erm…” The sound of footsteps alerted them to Gino’s presence. “‘No, JT. Keep the anchor up’,” he translated from the lower deck, his Italian accent still making it hard for JT to understand. He ran a hand through his wavy brown hair as Cal laughed, resting a hand on JT’s shoulder. “Don’t worry, John, it takes practice,” she said, her French accent lighter on the English words. JT laughed with them, but as soon as they’d walked away it turned into more of a nervous titter. Calypso and Gino climbed down the ladder onto the main deck, tying the main sails up. As the boat slowed down, Calypso walked up the bowsprit and closed her eyes, letting the salty air blow through her mahogany curls. This was where she belonged, she thought, as she sat on the end of the bowsprit with one her legs dangling over the clear blue water. On the Sans Bornes, drifting through the seas, with her unusual yet perfect crew. A Captain. Piracy wasn’t exactly what Calypso had imagined she would end up with for a profession; however, events rarely turn out as people expect them. Her thoughts were interrupted by soft footsteps behind her, the sweet smell of perfume filling the air. Arcelia sat next to Calypso, taking her hand and smiling. “Are you going to abandon us all night out here?” Arcelia asked, releasing Cal’s hand. She laughed in reply, kissing Arcelia’s forehead. “Not quite all night, Ysi. Just some of it.” (for that last line, her middle name is Ysibella)
