The best just got better. I had a GR several years back and loved it. Unfortunately it had a fight with a tiny wave on the sea and lost. I miss it. Things I would have improved on it were: Change the charging port to USB-C. Check. Improve auto-focus speed. Check. Increase the Mega Pixels to allow more cropping in post and bigger prints. Check. Make the field of view narrower. Check. Add weather sealing. No check. Make the lens non-retractable so it's more discreet and doesn't suck in dust and water. No check. Keep the crappy-looking aesthetics so you don't draw attention. Check. Keep the excellent size, weight and ergonomics. Check. Looks like most of my wish list has come true. I'm seriously considering this camera now.
I find 28 mm challenging sometimes, it just requires more fast thinking and planning for each moment. The new 40 mm will definitely allow more people to enjoy the system.
Back in the "good" old days with film cameras, most compact cameras had 38 or 40mm Lenses, the best Lens on a compact camera sits on the Leica Minilux a 40mm 2.4. Some day I will expect to see a compact digital camera like the size and style of the Minox 35 ML with a fullframe sensor !
I've had a GRii, i know the fanboys and street photographers loved the 28mm equiv, for me it was too wide. The cameras are great, basic and solid with wonderful IQ, 40mm would suit me a lot better 😊
I used to carry the original APS-C Ricoh GR everywhere. I still have it. But I've got that pesky problem where dust gets on the sensor and you can't get it off without disassembling the camera and re-assembling it. They didn't solve this with the GR III. It's *harder* for dust to get in now. But it's also harder to get it back out again. This focal length change is so tempting, though. This could become a proper X100 killer just based on true pocketability. You've got no excuse to not carry a GR everywhere if you own one.
I've had the dust problem with my gr2 aswell. Until it fell out of my hands and fell in the floor real hard... Barely a skratsh on the Ricoh but the impact cleaned the sensor. 😅
@@michael4196 I've had the X100F since it came out. It's gone around the world with me. I don't baby it. And I've never had dust issues. This is particular to the Ricoh GR family. With the X100 family, the lens body is fixed in place. With the Ricoh, the lens body retracts into the camera body when you power the camera off. This creates air gaps to the sensor and active imports dust from the outside of the lens body to the inside of the camera body.
As an X100 owner, I can confirm it's not pocket-able. Especially after mounting a filter on for weather sealing. Thankfully I always have a backpack or a diaper bag or my wife's purse near, so it's not an issue for me. Would highly recommend the camera or an xe3/4 with a pancake lens!
This confirms that I need to fix my GRIII and not try to replace it with X100V. So plan for summer 22 seems to be to have GRIII + X100V, still easier to carry than GRIII + 1DS3 with 35L.
DEPENDS on the size of your pockets.😂🤣. I'm a big guy. I fit an XT-20 in my pocket providing I have the low profile lens on it. Of course it's a little tight in my pants but I am used to that.😂🤣. Some of us are just bigger than others.😂🤣
I still find the removal of the built-in flash hard to swallow. I know for many it was an overlooked feature but I loved using it to achieve a washed out look in my photos without the need to fake it in post.
0:12 Alright, show off. Kai is my favourite RUclips camera reviewer since his DRTV days. I bought my RIcoh GR IIIx after watching this review. Been using it for the past 1 week now. Didn't regret my purchase. Actually bought my Ricoh GR III slightly later to cover wide angle shoot. But still, 40mm is the best for those who can't decide to go for 50mm or 335mm. I just hope that Ricoh will do a weather-sealed RIcoh GR IV, with better battery life. The current battery in its DB-110 battery sucks, so I bought an additional batteries for my daily shoot. Bw, keep it up Kai. Looking forward to your next review. -/TR
I have gone back and forth on fixed focal length compacts so many times. There are always going to be compromises, I can see this is a really good street camera as per the title, but for a camera to always have with you then I don't think it's versatile enough. 40mm focal length, is OK, but has limitations. However no viewfinder, no tilting screen, average AF, no 4k, no mic in, even no built in flash are all slight downsides, that add up, and it's not even the smallest option.
I agree. If you need a small camera and agree to use fixed focal length you'll be mostly OK with the features and quality of a premium phone. It does not even have a wide aperture. For the price and size of the Ricoh, just go and buy a decent iteration of Sony RX100 or even a Lumix LX100 LX10 or TZ100/200 camera. Each one has much better value for the money than the Ricoh when it comes to street photography. A one-inch camera is perfect for most situations, and photography is not about pixel peeping.
I love and still shoot with my Coolpix A. The little rubber thumb grip has worn through and I had to fix the lens cover - but it is an awesome little camera!
It's not it coming back. Nikon didn't market it right and the market isn't big enough for the extra effort. The Coolpix name is dumb for cameras like these..
Wow I was literally thinking about getting a GR3 ... only thing that kept me from getting it was the 28mm which is too wide for my taste. Now with this lens it has no competition 😍😱
I just did my first proper extended trip for street photos with a 50mm, a 9mm and an x100f (23mm) and i found myself using the 9 and 23 the majority of the time with a few exceptions. I definitely do feel like 23 is a bit wide. A 40 sounds like a the perfect lens for a daily carry
I was suspicious when I saw the fresh Pentax hat in your last video. You know you've made it when Ricoh chooses you for their world exclusive! It's crazy this thing wasn't rumored. Looking forward to the GRIII firmware update. Cheers!
his previous on 40mm sold me that is a focal length i want. They probably saw that too. Now i will have to choose between do i buy this or would i want to wait for a Nikon z 40mm at fraction. I live in a city and i would be likely to walk out the door with this every day in my man purse than my z6 or better.
I disagree, 40mm equiv is a too narrow fov for street, unless you only take portraits. With a wider lens you can still crop in post but the other way around doesn't work. I just hope the tele converter works on the original GR III
I discovered the joys of 40mm when Canon released its pancake. Also, 28mm lenses adapted to aps-c are close (42mm). Not quite as tunnel vision as 50mm, but nothing flying around the corners either.
As an owner of a GRIII I half expect Ricoh to release "new" cameras in every possible focal length to maximize profit. So many compact/pocket cameras these days have terrific zooms. How many great quality small cameras do I own (prime & zoom) that shoot between 35mm - 50mm ? How many stars are there in the sky? My diminutive Canons are superb. Fuji is long overdue to release an updated compact. I'll stash my cash in my 401K till I see something a bit more impressive. Choice is a good thing but patience is a virtue . . . Thanks for the video.

Finally! I had an original GR Digital about fifteen years ago and loved it, but once I broke it and then got an iPhone I basically fell out of love with street photography. THIS looks exactly like what will pull me back in. 40mm should hopefully make it look less like smartphone photos
chip shortage and lockdowns mean many manufacturers are struggling to release new kit. Rehashing old kit from the parts bin or existing stock is possible - so far Fuji and Ricoh. Expect a few more brands (not just camera) to have minor updated +1 versions
Hello and greetings from Germany. Thank you for this great Video. So what is the conclusion for someone like me who wants a replacement for the iPhone Camera. Mainly shooting holiday Pics, landscapes, portraits of the daughter and the dogs. Most phones use 24mm don‘t they? Why should i switch to 40mm? What do you guys recommend? GR or GRx?
7:18 Kai talks about 'distorted' not realizing that Lok's head in the frame corner looks so distorted that in 500 years from now Discovery Channel is going to run an episode on his skull as proof that our then Alien friends were already present on the planet in the 21st century and therefore must be allowed to stay.
Just traded in my XF10 and preordered a GR3x. Looking forward to getting my hands on it to shoot 40mm… it’ll compliment my X100V. I had been after the GR3 but as it was twice the price of the XF10, and they were both 28mm, I went for the XF10 but now, Ricoh has brought out my dream pocket camera. By the way, what was that ‘no paparazzi’ all about?
Absolutely love Ricoh GR photos. I’m still in the market for a decent used GRIII, as my budget is limited. Maybe with the IIIx, the regular will go down
Welp. I might be selling mine 😂 bought it right before the pandemic, so I never got to use it. Maybe only took 100 shots with it. But the 40mm is really interesting and I might sell the iii for the iiix haha
Agree with Lok, I *love* the X100F/V but from the compact perspective, they aren't comparable to GR series. The X100V is not pocket sized 90% of the time. Unless you wear a duffel coat all the time. I take my GRIII with me everywhere i go.
EVERYBODY just wants to talk about "street photography" but I want to document memorable moments of family gatherings; dinners, parties, picnics, day-trips. How about some content of such needs, please?
I paid 280 EUR for the Fuji XF10 last year and can't be happier. Perfect travel cam! I like the 28mm equiv. because having the APS-C sensor and excellent denoising cropping to 35 or 50 is still totally fine. You get it all in one!
Can you explain how to make street photography perfectly? Because we always face up with peoples, sometimes they dont like someone with camera shoot towards to them.
Still prefer the RX100 series up to V-a. It's smaller, zooms, fast as a ninja and very sharp. No it doesn't have an aps-c sensor. But the 1" type is better than I first thought it would be. And it has a viewfinder, charges through USB, the screen tilts and it blasts 20fps in raw which is actually very handy. I think Ricoh should step up their game. The camera has great optics but the rest just feels old. I would rather go with the Canon G1X mark III if I was hellbent on getting an aps-c.
Question. Why is the background so unstable filming with the Fujifilm X-T4?? Worst example is the first scene with the building on left of screen. Excellent review as always, but still looking for my perfect camera ...
I love shooting with a Ricoh GR camera, but personally I prefer the Ricoh GRIIIx because of the 40mm. photo length, but it is different from person to person 😊
Just sent my broken GRIII and GR II for repair and was thinking of getting X100V if repair cost would be on the high side... but already miss my GR's so I guess I have to pay the repair bill and maybe get the X100V later. Or at least that's what I thought, before I saw the X model... Hmmmmmmmmm. I love the 28mm version, since I mostly use it to shoot wide in events where I carry 1D with long lens. But on family vacation I would sometimes prefer something that would give me tighter crop and subject separation for portraits. GRIII + GRIII X would be the perfect choice, but then again I kind of hate GR skin tones and can't fix it what ever I do, so maybe GRIII 28mm and X100V would the combo.
I’m just about to buy a new GR after I killed my GR1 which has finally given up the ghost after 9 years, the best camera I’ve ever owned, I love the 28mm which I used for street, travel, everything, the multiple exposure feature is fantastic. If the GRiiix was 35mm I’d probably buy it, but I’m leaning towards the 28mm, and maybe updating my OMD and using that for tighter focal lengths or even wider than 28, then id have 2 cameras which are compact
This is actually kinda brilliant considering the pandemic 😂 I can't get as close as I used to 🤦🏻♂️ but my plan was to replace the griii when they released a new one. But because it's a diff focal length idk haha
Same here, I was ready to replace mine too. I think the diff focal length is a bit exiting. Was kinda hoping for dat flippy though, but maybe that’s for a later model. Or maybe never..
Is it worth the dosh in comparison to past iterations? Honest street shooter responses please. Cost wise it's quite a chunk so feedback would be great from actual users at the coal face.
its kind of crazy how close this guy is to me geographically I know all the streets he's on (in Kinston) I'm so used to the USA and having it all feel super non descript
I love Ricoh. But the dust on the sensor problem is a real Pain. Using a round rubber gasket on a Square sensor... Bravo Ricoh. make sure this is cured before buying one. Cost me over 100 Euros each time to get it cleaned, after being carried around in my bag in a clean wrap. Cant see much in the video that they didn't say about all previous GRs... except 40mm lens ... whoopidoo.
I’m really stuck between getting the gr iii or the gr iii x. If anyone has some opinions about which one to go for please help me out. This will be my first digital point and shoot camera. I’ve grown up shooting 35mm film camera such as the Contax t2 my father passed down to me. But at the same time gr iii with the 28mm lens is just classic for the GR series. Finding it difficult to choose as it’s not cheap .
Hi Kai. I have been enjoying your videos for years. I will be visiting HK next month and I am looking for a shop where I can buy the Ricoh GRIII X? Is there any shop you recommend?
I have both GR3 and gr digital and like all of them. Well I am courious if you tried to compare the GR3 28 with the crop at 35mm equivalent and the new 40 mm equivalent and what was your impression
My favorite focal lengths have always been the 28mm and the 40mm. I'm so happy that Ricoh apparently feels the same way! This why I love Ricoh so much. And apparently you can add a teleconverter that makes it a 75mm? That's awesome! I only wish they added better video specs, then I truly believe it would be the best all in one camera there is. Unfortunately my little ZV-1 is fitting that bill the best and I don't see this new Ricoh dethroning it in that department. And unfortunately I can't afford to own the two Ricoh gr iii's AND the zv-1. So I'm stuck with the Sony for now. It's just way too capable for such a small package (that's what she said?) And its output is actually pretty damn impressive. Especially for video in 4k with stabilization. But if I could afford it I would own all 3 actually. Have the best of all worlds. Oh ya is this going to go for the same price as the gr iii?
I was interested in the TC to be able to take some nice portraits during travels, where the 40mm otherwise would be fine for me. It was very cryptic on the website with the TC, but if I read it correctly the TC will give you 75mm in the 50mm crop mode... so it is 1,5x TC. So in the default mode it would be 60mm on the GRIIIx. Not sure why they would tell us with the crop mode on... maybe the TC does not cover the whole image circle..? Strange
@@domtomazo I think I might have heard different actually. That it would normally convert it to a 75 roughly and in crop mode to like a 115 or somewhere thereabouts. I'll try to find that link
@@leeraxd word ya i ended up selling the zv-1 and honestly don't miss it too much. Especially (and surprisingly) with my new iPhone 13 pro. It seems to fill that gap and then some. And then I can use my real camera for A-roll and everything else. But for a proper street camera, I've been still using my fuji xf10. Perfect little edc street camera. I think im actually going to trade it for the lumix lx10 for whatever that's worth tho. Something about the look in that camera really speaks to me.
Now we can have a Ricoh GR in each of our pockets. 28mm in your right pocket and 40mm in your left pocket. You’ll be the ultimate ninja paparazzi.
You also need a 600mm Ricoh to be a real paparazzi😂

I had been after the GR3 but as it was twice the price of the XF10, and they were both 28mm, I went for the XF10 but now, Ricoh has brought out my dream pocket camera.
By the way, what was that ‘no paparazzi’ all about?
what is causing the constant 'wobbly' look in the main camera you're shooting yourself with? focus breathing? from 2:30 to 3:30 it happens a ton.
I had a griii but I couldn’t get used to the 28mm composition! This might be for me
When are you shooting it if today is today, but not the today you were referring to?
Any other improvements vs the III? Or just 28mm to 40mm?
Exactly.......
I’m glad the bokeh bros are back!
would you recommend it for street photography over the Canon 5gx mark ii? Thanks
@@Randuski please dont do that
@@payperview714 too late. But I'm not gonna get one for a bit haha
Agree with Lok, I *love* the X100F/V but from the compact perspective, they aren't comparable to GR series. The X100V is not pocket sized 90% of the time. Unless you wear a duffel coat all the time. I take my GRIII with me everywhere i go.
And "special" trousers for the tripod.
I didn't know I would love 40mm but ever since I bought my voigtlander 40mm/f1.2 I've hardly used anything else. This is a dream pocket camera
EVERYBODY just wants to talk about "street photography" but I want to document memorable moments of family gatherings; dinners, parties, picnics, day-trips. How about some content of such needs, please?
Great. A terrific video from my two favourite presenters.
I paid 280 EUR for the Fuji XF10 last year and can't be happier. Perfect travel cam! I like the 28mm equiv. because having the APS-C sensor and excellent denoising cropping to 35 or 50 is still totally fine. You get it all in one!
I just bought an X100V, stop torturing my credit card with your underrated Pentax hat!!!
I’ve had my X100V for about a year. It’s a beaut isn’t it
@@vu1cana I am literally never using another camera again.
Can you explain how to make street photography perfectly? Because we always face up with peoples, sometimes they dont like someone with camera shoot towards to them.
Thanks for sharing, I'd just add that it's better to have a 40mm with a wide angle adapter then a 28 with a tele adapter.
What 28mm adapter is there for the GR iiix ?
after lok's review i go directly to kai's and enjoy them bothhhh
Still prefer the RX100 series up to V-a. It's smaller, zooms, fast as a ninja and very sharp. No it doesn't have an aps-c sensor. But the 1" type is better than I first thought it would be. And it has a viewfinder, charges through USB, the screen tilts and it blasts 20fps in raw which is actually very handy. I think Ricoh should step up their game. The camera has great optics but the rest just feels old. I would rather go with the Canon G1X mark III if I was hellbent on getting an aps-c.
Yep still loving Mr rx100v…oldie but goodie and so damn small!
Canon PowerShot G1X is massive lol
by that i mean, too big to compare.
Question. Why is the background so unstable filming with the Fujifilm X-T4?? Worst example is the first scene with the building on left of screen. Excellent review as always, but still looking for my perfect camera ...
where is your review on the Canon EOS R3?
Would you go with the ricoh or the fujifilm xe3?
I love shooting with a Ricoh GR camera, but personally I prefer the Ricoh GRIIIx because of the 40mm. photo length, but it is different from person to person 😊
Isn't 28mm on a APS-c 40mm equiv ?
No EVF in 2021? Are we back in 2001? How can you compose in bright sunlight? And it is the best street camera?
There's Canon, but have you tried the new 6F from CanOff?
CaOui!
This or a Fuji XF10? Trying to decide
Yo! What are your thoughts on the Ricoh GT-2? Would you consider using it?
this new gr with 40mm lens remains me of my old trusted street weapon Rollei 35
I’m just about to buy a new GR after I killed my GR1 which has finally given up the ghost after 9 years, the best camera I’ve ever owned, I love the 28mm which I used for street, travel, everything, the multiple exposure feature is fantastic. If the GRiiix was 35mm I’d probably buy it, but I’m leaning towards the 28mm, and maybe updating my OMD and using that for tighter focal lengths or even wider than 28, then id have 2 cameras which are compact
I knew they’d have a new one before I saved up for the last one. Freakin lockdowns
That is the focal length on my Sigma DP2 classic. It feels good and natural.
Cant see much in the video that they didn't say about all previous GRs... except 40mm lens ... whoopidoo.
So new that not yet on Ricoh site. How long until this is physically in stores?
Why not get the original 28mm and select crop mode, is that possible?
Where can I get one of these cool Pentax hats?
I'll try to find that link
i have the zv1 also but interested in the IIIx for the focal length! just wait until the GR4 gets released and then it’ll be cheaper
Can't wait for the GR8
Pair with the Olympus OMFG-M8ii ;)
GRIII X here and i use it for vacation and every day use, i love it... i had the X100V. I prefer the GR
Someone make a 16mm equivalent fixed lens camera.
What is better setting for colors in Ricoh GR3: sRGB or AdobeRGB?
I've gone back to using my chunky DSLR alot (d4)... Love my fuj & griii but the plasticky feel, dodgy AF and battery kills me 😌
The best thing I like about it is your reviews are just behind your shoulder
I have a GR1s, which has a 28mm, and that goes with me everywhere.
Great info, tks!, but... PUT STRAPS ON YOUR CAMERAS! it makes me nervous to se you finger handle those devices! (don't you ever drop them?)
If you have a GR III already, is it worth the grand to get another one in 40mm? Hmm.
Do you boke bros have a podcast? Something only audio?
