    I like articulated dolls. That's my description of jointed dolls but I do refer to them as bjd for conversations.
    I have collected for YEARS and have dolls from the 1840s to today. Ball joints originated as far back as the late 1800s. The dolls were made of paper mache' with wood "ball" jointed through which a cord through.

  • @strayiggytv

    Personally I don't like that the term bjd has been kind of co-opted to be a blanket term for basically all dolls that have articulation. And no it's not for some "elitists" reason, it's because it makes it hard to tell what kind of doll people are even talking about.
    Like for example, I've had people approach me on Instagram and reddit asking for advice on faceups for bjd then I give them advice only to look at their posts after the fact and realise they were talking about monster high dolls, or pullips or playline Barbies.
    The materials you use are different for different materials. I wouldn't recommend the same paints and techniques for abs plastic or vinyl as I would for resin. There's also different staining factors, learning to tighten hinge joints vs suedeing strung ball joints etc.
    They're just different dolls and it sometimes feels like you get straight villainized for pointing out any differences between them which is wild when fashion dolls like Blythe and Barbie frequently top even the more expensive with their price tags lol

      Yeah I think it’s definitely a interesting label now with all these dolls coming out. Back in the day we would even say Asian ball jointed dolls and now that’s hard to even label it as that since we have people all over the world making them now. I think if categories were put together I’d say BJD, hinge joint, and fashion dolls. I just feel like companies make it tricky like these Amazon dolls when they label them as BJDs when technically they are more hinge jointed than anything 😳

    • @nitebreak
      @nitebreak Год назад +7

      As a monster high and rainbow high collector i would never call them a bjd 😭. I wish the distinction was more clear as well because the dolls are distinctly different.

      I feel like a good chunk of the confusion recently is coming from how store sites (especially Amazon) prioritize matching searched words in item names when displaying search results. It incentivizes sellers to throw in as many potential search terms into the name of the listing, even if they don't all match 100%.
      This combined with the fact that most Amazon listings are actually 3rd-party resellers who are flipping items from Aliexpress (and other such sites), bootleggers / recasters, as well as some stuff from legit east-asian brands that don't have official US storefronts (Penny's Box, UF Doll, etc), means that you get a lot of unofficial listings from unaffiliated 3rd-party resellers that are titled with total word-salad nonsense that just contain all remotely doll-related search terms.
      (Often with the actual brand name removed, even if it's stuff from a legit brand, for some reason. Maybe to keep clueless buyers returning to their specific storefront instead of looking elsewhere for better prices? idk, but I have beef with it. Just makes the listings feel that much sketchier, plus it feels like they're stealing the reputation of the actual creators.)
      I also feel like the situation has changed somewhat since this video was first posted. Back around then, it was mostly just the early waves of Penny's Box stuff, but since then the whole trend of blind box BJDs has really exploded, and now there are so many on the market from a ton of different manufacturers. Now searching 'BJD' on Amazon is more likely to show listings of 3rd parties reselling those, as opposed to recasts or mislabelled mechanically jointed dolls. Not necessarily a bad thing (except for my wallet lmao) but I'll bet it makes searching for the more 'traditional' handcrafted / small batch resin elastic-strung BJDs even tougher, since now the market has been flooded even further.
      (Side note; if anyone is interested in those blind box bjds, there are better places to buy them than Amazon. I personally use Kikagoods, since from my understanding they partner directly with the manufacturers, so they're way more legit than the 3rd party resellers on Amazon.)

    There's too many "bjd " dolls that it would be near impossible to know if they're legit or not. Or to know the quality of each of them.

    • @AsenvaBJD
      @AsenvaBJD  2 года назад +19

      It definitely is getting trickier to tell but there are still some tell tale signs to know differences between recasts and legit company dolls. These more targeted "for kids" dolls however are kind of hard to tell since they are coming from larger companies versus small companies that the resin BJDs come from. I honestly do wonder about these amazon dolls though and wish there was more info on them for sure :)

  • @herkcollins4263
    @herkcollins4263 2 года назад +12

    Amazon can be confusing because so many believe they are selling all of the products when in reality, people are able to sell their personal property on Amazon the same as eBay. This can make some of the products way less in price when you learn that you didn't purchase from Amazon themselves, but from another person selling their own belongings. As for hinge and ball, I prefer resin and strung, but many BJD companies are also selling vinyl dolls on a hinge which is most commonly called a mechanical joint and they are selling them under the listing of Vinyl BJD. The way that the mechanical joints became known as a BJD is because of the fact that they are less expensive and were nick named "The Poor Man's BJD.

    • @AsenvaBJD
      @AsenvaBJD  2 года назад +3

      Thanks so much for all the info! I think more and more I am hearing people refer them as mechanical joints vs hinge joints. I think it is interesting how they all evolve and how terminology moves around too. So then would you say dolls like Night Lolita are hinge or mechanical?

    • @herkcollins4263
      @herkcollins4263 2 года назад +1

      @@AsenvaBJD I would say mechanical, like a large version of Made To Move Barbie. That is a common mechanical joint. Pretty much anything with a socket that the limb plugs into is such. Also, you're very welcome. I hope the information helps.

    As far as I'm concerned, a doll with ball joints is a ball jointed doll. You can add extra categories to it, but if it has ball joints, it's a bjd.

    • @AsenvaBJD
      @AsenvaBJD  2 года назад +2

      Yeah it’s definitely an evolving term and it’s becoming something more and more mainstream as people begin collecting all sorts of dolls. It’s kinda hard to make categories now 😳

    Yeah, I wouldn’t call them “bjd” either. There are tons of dolls that are articulated for really long time (like some Barbies I had when I was a little kid like 3 decades ago could bend at wrists elbows and knees with hinges) There’s no point of BJD if there is no standards. 🤔 I like my dolls for high aesthetic standard and uniqueness of being artist dolls. I wouldn’t be buying some knock offs and decide calling them bjd just because I want to have what can’t. 🤔

Is there any darker (and by darker, I mean dark brown) bjds out there, or are we pushed into only buying recast, in order to have a brown bjd?

Her mother said she sleeps with her doll ! And she and the doll look so much alike it’s amazing! I and my daughter are quite satisfied and very happy with our dolls ! The quality is very good , as I am not an expert in these dolls “good or bad “ I am real happy with them! Yes all the dolls together cost about what one ( 1 ) SMART DOLL COSTS ! I fell in love with DANNY CHOO’S SMART DOLL ,BUT the price cooled me way down ! We pay what we can afford for less ,in some cases not so less ! As is this case turned out for me/us !

    Be careful of amazon reviews. I had all my reviews deleted and was banned from making more reviews. I had hundreds of reviews going back decades. I am a real person that doesn't sell anything and I'm sure my reviews perfectly fine.
    But I always see obvious fake reviews on amazon. People that give 5 stars to everything or 1 star to everything. Or the same review will be posted by different people. Then companies will send stuff for free for high reviews. Or companies will report people for giving them bad reviews.
    I'm only stating this because you were talking about amazon reviews on the bjd dolls. These I think will have higher than average number of fake reviews. Many of the companies are selling KOs and are using lies to push thier stuff.
