  • Boy howdy, it sure is difficult to talk about doll sizes in a simplified way under 10 minutes. XD
    Anyway, if you couldn’t tell already, today’s video is all about the sizes/scales ball jointed dolls are made in.
    Feel free to ask me any questions you may have about this particular topic. :)

    I have been trying to decide a size for my first doll, there are some 1/4 I really like but was afraid they were too small and every other video or pics doing size comparisons just compare between dolls making hard to imagine the real size, but using a DVD Case make it really easy, thanks. Now I'll definitely get a 1/4 girl.

      I choosed 1/6 lol since I'm just on my experimental stage where I just want to have one with a head I could make wigs for it, some bjd have rooted hair, or can't open like mine.
      But I love it and look forward either 1/4 or 1/3

    You're a lifesaver!! I have been coveting bjds for about 15 years off n on and finally FINALLY got into the hobby with a brand new, but second hand full set Fairyland Lucywen that someone bought for themselves to customize and then never did. She was kept pristine in her box for years. She was barely looked over, on arrival, by the old owner before being put back in the box. The old owner had dozens and dozens of dolls he was sitting on. I feel very lucky in that I pretty much got my holy grail doll right off the get go. Anyways. I've been learning allll the jargon and all the things because I want to make this doll amazing. Your videos really help. Thank you!!!

    Thank you so much for this. I'm not very new in terms of what I know but since I haven't gotten the funds to get a doll yet, that part makes me really new. Great video! Really informative for us newbies. I like that you put the dolls with household objects that we would know the size of, for scale.
    Your dolls are lovely, what doll is the SD girl in green shorts, and the tan MSD with curly dark crown hair? 😊

      Thanks, glad you fine it informative and helpful! I know it can be hard to get an idea of how big or small some of these dolls are without references, so I wanted to make sure to have something to use for scale. xD
      The SD girl is my Iplehouse SID (which stands for Senior Iplehouse Doll-it’s just the name of one of Iple’s doll lines) Zera, and the tan mini is a Fairyland Minifee (again, name of one of their doll lines) Celine. :D

      @@strungoutbjd of course! I just ordered Dark Agnes from souldoll. She's 64cm...which means she's an SD right? I ordered some MSD size clothes... hehe. Yeah.. I'm not sure they'll fit.

      Oooh nice! What a pretty lady. 😍 Hard to go wrong wiht Souldoll. Love their sculpts!
      But...yeah she’s in the SD+ range, so the MSD clothes are definitely gonna be too small. 😥 I’m not terribly well-schooled on clothes shopping for larger dolls since I stick more to the mini size myself. 🤔 It looks like she’s on Souldoll’s Zenith girl body, so that should help with searching and asking people about what might fit. :) If you’re on Facebook, you could join the “Souldoll BJD” group and ask there about good places to shop, and there’s also the Zenith discussion thread on DoA.

      Hi there, and thank you!! :) I pick up clothes all over the place. Etsy is usually the first place I go, but I’ve also gotten stuff from shops on Taobao and of course there is eBay as well. The BJD community on Instagram is pretty big right now and plenty of people post sales on there too. Alice’s Collections has a pretty great collection of clothing from different makers. I also really like Nine9Style, Tata’s Paradise, rRabit, and TTYA for modern clothes. There’s tons of places to buy doll clothes at, but it can definitely take quite a bit of digging to hunt them down.

      Oh cool! I love Blythe dolls, they’re so snazzy. :D It’s definitely an experience going from Barbie-height dolls to something like a Senior Iplehouse Doll (SID for short), I can tell you that. XD Nothing really to be scared of though, the main difference is that they’re just heavier. I’m not sure about where you could find a doll in the same height range as 1/3 dolls that would be somewhat easily accessible, but if you want to get an idea of 1/4 dolls (or minis), American Girls (and dolls like them) and those big Monster High girls (like Gooliope) are in the same height range as most minis.

      Hello there! The first doll shown in the video is an Iplehouse SID (stands for Senior Iplehouse Doll) Zera, from iplehouse.com. I can’t remember the exact height of my girl, but she’s around 63cm I believe? They also have their FIDs (Fashion Iplehouse Doll) that have the same body type and some of the same sculpts as their larger dolls (I don’t believe Zera has made it into the FID line though ; A ; ), but are just smaller scale (more in the 45cm height range). :) The bottoms are from Dorset Clothing on Etsy.

I have 1/4 nude and I'm planning to buy clothes but majority of online stores cater to 1/3 more. So I was wondering if one can use the others clothes even if they're different sizes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!!!

    • @strungoutbjd
      @strungoutbjd  5 лет назад

      Hi there, I’m more than happy to help you out! As shown in the video, the main difference between 1/3 scale and 1/4 scale dolls is their size. 1/3 dolls are usually 60cm (around 24in) and larger, and 1/4 dolls are usually 40-45cm (around 17in). It may not seem like it on paper, but that’s a pretty huge difference in doll scale, so safe to say that for the most part, 1/3 scale doll clothes will NOT fit 1/4 dolls. Well...they CAN, but it’ll look like a little kid dressed up in mommy and daddy’s clothes, ya know? XD You’d have to make some pretty extensive alterations to the clothes in question to get them to fit properly.
      I actually have another photo I took for someone else here on YT of a comparison between a 1/3 scale boy I have alongside a few of my minis: www.flickr.com/photos/xsingull/41196730471/
      What doll in particular are you trying to find clothes for? I may be able to be better help if I knew what specific doll and body you’re trying to find stuff for. :)

  • @DollieLovex3
    @DollieLovex3 5 лет назад

    Would you say that generally, all MSDs can fit the same clothing? I have been searching for clothing for my large bust, MYOU Delia. She is 44cm tall and pretty much .5-1cm larger than a lot of the MSD (Fairyland minifee) items that I see offered for sale on Etsy and most MSD clothing sections on websites like Nine9style. Im still wondering if it would fit. She does have long legs, so I know I may have to be careful with that.

    • @strungoutbjd
      @strungoutbjd  5 лет назад +2

      Not really. The thicker more child-like standard sized minis will not fit into stuff made for slim minis at all (not without a LOT of stretch, anyway). Standard mini clothes will fit on slim minis, but they’ll be very baggy (not a bad look if that’s what you want, but not terribly helpful if you want something more tailored). Each doll is differently proportioned though, so it can be hard to say with 100% certainty.
      From what I can tell from measurements alone, Myou Delia looks like she’s around the slim mini catagory, but yeah they’re much taller than Fairyland’s Minifees (most dolls are XD), and it looks like she’s a little thicker too, so stuff that’s tailored more for Minifees will likely be too tight and short on your girl. You’ll probably have better luck with stuff made more specifically for Unoas and other taller minis like them. 🤔
      I’d say Nine9Style is definitely a good place to start off since they use dolls that are on the taller and thicker end of the slim mini category so their stretchy stuff generally fits both sizes well enough to not be jarring. Maybe check out ttyacom too on Etsy. Sorry I can’t be more help on this one. I don’t own an Myou girl myself, so I don’t know for sure how clothes fitting is for them.

    I have a Smart Doll (not a BJD but similar in appearance) and I thought SD stood for Smart Doll! Mirai is 1/3 scale and a stately 2 feet tall...all of the "SD" sizes look like they are ALL 1/3 scale but representing different ages. One third of adult height is far taller than one third of child or toddler height!

    • @strungoutbjd
      @strungoutbjd  4 года назад

      Lucky duck, that’s a pretty crazy find. U: I’d say a good way to try and figure out what sculpt he is is to take clear photos of the doll’s body and head and post them on a Facebook group explaining how you got a hold of him and asking if anyone recognizes the sculpt. You can also try the BJD Discord ( discord.gg/bjd ) and ask there, as well as Den of Angels. You could probably even try posting pictures on Instagram and tag it with popular BJD-centric tags.
      I would also be weary about it’s legitimacy. While it’s plenty likely it is a legitimate doll, there’s also a chance the doll could be a counterfeit (most popularly known as recasts in the BJD community). Just keep that in mind when posting it online since a lot of people and groups aren’t big fans of fake dolls in this particular community.
      If you’re on Instagram, you’re welcome to message me with pictures so I can help out if trying to figure it out on your own seems too overwhelming. You can find me under the name Singull there. :)

    • @strungoutbjd
      @strungoutbjd  5 лет назад +3

      There’s not really a one-size fits all type of doll size that’s best to start with. For me, I started off with large dolls and after a few years of collecting I realized that dolls in the mini range suited me more (though I still have a handful of 60cm+ dolls in my collection since I loved their sculpts so much). And other collectors have found the opposite to be true for them. You just don’t really know what you’re gonna like best until you’ve actually handled differently sized dolls, you know? In my case, I could only figure that our through buying dolls myself since I didn’t know anybody else in my town that owned them, but if you look around online, you might be able to find local BJD collectors that you can meet up with and check their dolls out in person and whatnot.
      That said, there are pros and cons to dolls in the larger size range!
      The upsides to them is that larger dolls tend to be easier to craft items for since you don’t have to deal with such small scales, they’re easier to take pictures of since, again, you’re not dealing with quite as small a subject, and they really have a presence when you get them all stood up (I have two of my larger dolls on stands so they really catch the eye when someone first walks into my room).
      Downsides are that large dolls (particularly 70cm+ ones) can sometimes be hard to shop for, they’re heavy so it’s not terribly fun to travel with them for long stints, and they can be hard to handle when you’re trying to pose them or even just change their clothes thanks to their weight.
      It sounds like you keep going back to this particular doll though, so I think that’s a pretty good indicator about whether you should buy it or not. XD

      Hello, sorry for my super late response! I have such a bad habit of putting off responding to comments on RUclips.
      Honestly, I can’t really tell you what size doll would be preferable to you since stuff like that really depends on the collector. I personally prefer 1/4 scale dolls since they’re pretty easy to shop for and they’re a good size to handle. Plus, there’s a ton of variety in this size from different companies. I have exactly one 1/6 size doll at this point and she has similar styling and proportions as Volks’s YoSDs, so she’s easy to find things for. Other than that, it’s not a size I personally look at often so I can’t really give a good opinion on them and what’s available. ^^; I imagine the more fashion doll styled ones are easy to shop for since you could just snag stuff made for other fashion dolls like Blythe, Pullip, Barbie and so on. Sorry I can’t be of more help!
      And I’ll also note in case you or others that come across this comment don’t know, Shuga Fairy dolls are counterfeits made by Oueneifs/ChinaBJD/Luo. bjd.fandom.com/wiki/Oueneifs

    • @strungoutbjd
      @strungoutbjd  5 лет назад +2

      Hi there! For a young kid, I’d definitely recommend a doll from Hujoo or Fall In Doll. They both cast dolls in ABS plastic, so they’re far less expensive than their resin counterparts (around $70 seems to be the norm for a blank [non-painted] version; $80-$90+ for one with a faceup [the painted and blushed details on the doll’s face). They both have some super cute sculpts that I’m sure your kid would love!
      The Junky Spot deals for both companies and generally restocks on a decently regular basis. junkyspot.com/
      If you really want a resin doll, you’ll likely need to put in more than $100. Resinsoul and Bobobie are by far the least expensive on the market, but there’s also Doll Leaves, Impldoll, and Mystic Kids (and I’m sure more, but I don’t shop around as much as I used to XD; ). You could also try joining some Facebook BJD sales groups and make a Want to Buy post to see if you get any bites for an inexpensive secondhand doll.
      Good luck on finding a doll!

    • @strungoutbjd
      @strungoutbjd  4 года назад

      Um...could you give me a time stamp of what doll you’re referring to? The first doll to appear in the video is at 0:42 and she is most certainly not Barbie size (if you check 8:00 you’ll see her with a Monster High [which are about the same height as Barbie] and she is noticeably larger than that XD).

      Assuming you mean the pale one with the dress and gray stockings and dark hair, that’s a DollsTown Deogi on the 5yr girl body. Here’s DT’s website: dollstown.com (Looks like their shopping site broke down or something, but they got all their doll information posted up and looks like you can still place orders; just have to do it through email).

    Could you help me? I'm an old lady and this is all new to me. I am trying to find a blueprint for A BJD doll. It's for my dollhouse. My Is Dollhouse is a one point twelve scale So she would be about five point five inches tall or thirteen point ninety seven centimeters Any help would be appreciated

    • @strungoutbjd
      @strungoutbjd  Год назад

      I’m not entirely sure what you mean by blueprint, but there are a few artists and companies that make smaller dolls around or near that height. I’d suggest checking out Alice’s Collections ( www.acbjd.com/ ) and all the companies they deal for (they have general heights of the dolls listed by each line the each artist/company offers). Denver Doll Emporium ( www.denverdoll.com/product-category/ball-jointed-dolls/ ) is another dealer you could check out that sells dolls for a variety of BJD creators. I’m not too knowledgable about Tiny dolls (the general term for dolls that size) and who all offers what since I don’t collect them much myself, but hopefully this helps give you a start on your search!
      If you have Facebook you could join the BJD Addicts group ( facebook.com/groups/195691940459711/about/ ) and ask the people there, or create an account for the Den of Angels forum ( denofangels.com/) and post in the Newbieland subforum ( denofangels.com/forums/newbieland.117/ ).

      Hello! I have several on display in the video that are in that size, so I’ll do my best to make it clear which is from where. :)
      1:11 - Short brown hair, and wearing a green/white dress + dark stockings: DollsTown Deogi (I have her on the 5yr body).
      www.dollstown.com/
      2:26 Curly brown hair, brown skin, orange crop top + leggings: Fairyland Minifee Celine (she is on the Moe-line [M-line] body).

      www.denverdoll.com/
      5:13 Orange hair with glasses + pink/black crop top: Alchemic Labo Unoa Sist (bully faceplate)
      www.alchemiclabo.com/
      5:47 Brown haired boy with white shirt + plaid button up, grey shorts: Iplehouse JID Joshua - He has since been discontinued, so you can only find him secondhand.
      iplehouse.com/
      6:11 Long black hair, long-sleeved black shirt + jean shorts: DollZone Annie on a B45-009 body modified to be female. Annie is also discontinued.

    6:15 what company are the two end dolls?

    • @strungoutbjd
      @strungoutbjd  4 года назад

      They are a DollZone Annie on a modified (female to male) boy body from the same company in their old version of yellow skin, and the other is a Fairyland Minifee Celine on their Moe line body in tan skin. Annie and the body are both discontinued so you can’t buy her new from the company anymore, but I see her pop up now and then secondhand. Celine is still easily purchased from Fairyland and is a pretty popular head sculpt, so you’d be likely to see available online for sale secondhand.

    • @strungoutbjd

      I’m guessing you’re referring to the brown skinned one with the mint-colored shorts? She’s from Iplehouse.com; the Zera sculpt (should be listed under S.I.D Basic). The other large doll (the male one) is also from Iplehouse, and he’s a Justin. The shorter doll I pictured with my SDs was a Notdoll Lab head (Bleu Citron), on a DollsTown body.

    • @strungoutbjd

      Hi there! From what I’ve looked up, SDC and SDM stand for Super Dollfie Cute and Super Dollfie Midi, which are some of Volks’s other 1/4 sized dolls. From what I see in comparison pictures, they all look about the same size, just with different jointing systems.
      Anyway, if your girl has measurements similar to a Volks MSD ( denofangels.com/doawiki/index.php?title=Mini_Super_Dollfie#Measurements ), then you should be fine! There might be a little bit of wiggle room. What specific mini girl are you trying to buy clothes for?

      strungoutbjd strungoutbjd thank you so much, I'm new to this so I was really worried that it wouldn't fit my girl, I bought a Fairyland minifee girl, its so good to know the dress will fit with a bit of extra room :D.

    • @strungoutbjd
      @strungoutbjd  6 лет назад +1

      Ahh, if it’s a Minifee girl, then you actually want to find clothes made for Slim Minis. MSD clothes CAN fit, but depending on the style, they can look out of proportion and baggy. That said, I’ve found safety pins and clips to be immensely helpful in getting use out of oversized clothes on my smaller dolls. xD Afterall, nobody but you has to ever really look at the back of your dolls.

      It certainly can! xD In the BJD portion of the doll hoby though, SD will just about always be referring to Volks’s Super Dollfie line. I see a lot of people use SmD for Smart Doll to avoid confusion since a lot of people that collect BJDs also collect vinyl dolls like Smart Dolls, Dollfie Dreams and so on. :)

      Hi, sorry for the late response! That is an Iplehouse SID (short for Senior Iplehouse Doll) Zera in Light Brown skin. You can find her here: iplehouse.com/home/shop/item.php?it_id=1520363679&nhn1=en
      Just FYI, she is only available to purchase in Light Brown during the Doll Choice event Iplehouse holds from the 1st to the 15th every month (so as I’m posting now, Doll Choice is available). Otherwise, the darkest they offer outside of that is Special Real skin. You will need an Iplehouse account to check out the Doll Choice page.
