Terrific playing indeed. Roger M certainly done some wonderfull guitar arrangements over the period which have stood the test of time and influenced many a musician. One of my favourites is Rogers arrangement of Bob Dylan’s My Back Pages . …
Musically I'm a layman, unable to comment on any of the technical issues, lol. I can comment, however, as someone who has listened to The Byrds' version hundreds of times and Tom Petty's cover scores of times, that it's a thrill to hear and watch you play it on your Rickenbacker. That sound is unique, almost haunting, and certainly touches the soul. Thank you for playing it for us!
Your playing sounds just like McGuinn!...I can't play the lead, so I never bought that Rickenbacker 12, but I've been on those chords for over 50 years! What a great song, and quite sweet guitar work! Thanks!
As the former bass player in a local Petty tribute I was always pestering the guys to play this song, but alas it wasn't meant to be. Now that I'm no longer in the band I play along to this song at home. This is a great guitar version, Mike Campbell would be proud!

Think Tom and co played this precisely the same way McGuinn and his boys laid it down some quarter century later. Tom was always true to his heroes and performing this song note for note was a sign of reverence.
I was a teenager in the 60s and loved The Byrds then as well as now and always. I can't see what all the fuss about a Tom Petty cover of a Byrds song is all about. The Byrds did this song much nicer.
This is so great, I got a Rickenbacker 360/12C63 a week ago and can't put it down and songs like this are why, the Byrds, Beatles, the Who and Tom are why I had to have one. Thanks, you made my morning I'll be playing along with your video for a while now. Great playing and taste in music.
Brother, you did this one PROUD! I'm 70 in '24, which means I remember when this first hit the airwaves around Tucson where I grew up. My home-boy Jim / Roger McGuinn moved to L.A. and got The Byrds together soon after. I fell in love with the sound of a 12 string. I subbed you on this "first time" hearing you, you can sure play well I feel. Best and God Bless us all jbeinarizona
Thanks so much my friend for your views and subbing to my channel. Also, thanks for sharing your interesting story on Roger McGuinn. Since I make zero on this channel, it's folks like you and your nice comments that make it worth doing. Again,I really appreciate your post's.
My brother had a new 1979 Mapleglo Rickenbacker 360/12 that he bought at Manny’s Music World in Manhattan on 47th Street. We shared a bedroom as teenagers, and we’d stack the stereo record player with every Byrd’s album that would fit and it would play well into the summer night with the windows open for the neighbors to hear. It’s a beautiful guitar...no guitar looks like it or sounds like it. Go Rick-o-sound!
BTW I noticed on your channel you're a Blackberry Smoke fan. Not sure if you checked my channel out but I have around 15 BBS cover tunes if interested. Take care...
Brother, that band has reincarnated my belief in music. Your dissection of these songs is epic. I love watching you work Charlie’s magic. Shake Your Magnolia. Ridiculously good ❤️ I’m going to London in 2 weeks to see them 2 nights in a row. Look for videos.
@donwershba2319 Hi, my friend, and thanks for the view and comment. Actually, from several comments I've received over the years, the way I'm playing it is wrong. And it probably is. They way I played it here, it just sounded fuller to me. I've seen many older videos of Mcguinn playing the A at the second fret, so I'm sure that's the correct way.
But I definitely need a Rickenbacker. One of my favourite and wanted guitars. And I like your cover what a song! The chord progression is very well shown. The Byrds, the coolest band in ''65-'67
Hi my friend and sorry for my late reply to your great comment. Really appreciate your view and the interesting story on the sister!! Those were the days for sure!
Whoaaaa!! ....that,....was,....GREAT!! Dude!! ORGASMIC chord progression at the end of the lead, that last chord before the vocal start is an explosion!!
Sir ---------just do remember, Roger McGuinn made his now legendary " Jingle Jangle Sound ", with a Rickenbacker 370 --12 string ; he also used some engineering tricks to amplify the ' chime sound " of the 370. -------------As for the 360, both George Harrison & Carl Wilson both got their 360 model in the summer of '64 . Harrison can be heard on " A Hard Days Night " , & Carl Wilson can be seen playing his, on The TAMI Show..
Hi, and thanks for your view and comment, although I didn't quite get the meaning of your response. Yes, I'm totally aware of the Rickenbacker history of the great players you mentioned, I was not suggesting Roger McGuinn played a 360. If you're referring to his 3 pickup model, that's actually a 375, not a 370. The 5 in the model number indicates 3 pickups. I was merely just playing one of my favorite Ric 12 songs and calling attention to my guitar only in the title.
JBL: I can't believe I missed this video that you did. Simply superb! You are an inspiration to us all. Cheers. P.S. At one time I had the 1964 George Harrison Ricky. Too narrow for my thick fingers. I tried it for a custom Fender Strat. Great song, even better playing by you. Double cheers.
Hi my friend and great to hear from you again. I did this one a couple years back. I actually sold this RIC a little while back as it was barely getting played. Great, beautiful, guitar of course but needed the money for other things. I guess I can always get another one if the fever hits me again. Thanks again for the view and great comment and hope you and your family are doing well. Take care..
Hi. Thanks for the view and very nice comment! Yes I'm considering selling the Ric but not 100% sure as of yet. I have considered listing it on Ebay or Reverb.com and will decide in the next few weeks. Thanks again...
That one the exact same one.... 360-12....color and all... And thanks for the fingering on the lead riffs.. you nailed it down... And it does have the same soul stirring edgyness that the sound of a Hammond cutting a groove does... Unless it's just me...?? :o
I have always also loved the sound of a Hammond organ. Absolutely nothing compares to a B3 and a Leslie. To this day I would still love to find a decent Leslie to play my guitars thru. They're hard to find these days for a reasonable price though. Glad the video was of some help to you. Thanks again!
Love that area up there. Actually visited for the first time about 3 years with my wife and have been back at least 3 more times over the years. She has family in Jersey. Always new things to do and see every time. Yeah keep me in mind if a cheap Leslie pops up. Thanks again!
I really really like this Tom Petty album. You did an impeccable job. Your 12-string rickenbaker guitar is beautiful, and the tone is fantastic. I've always liked these guitars. Congratulations !!
Hello my friend. Thanks for the view and comment on the song and guitar. Actually I'm considering selling the guitar. I really thought I would be playing it more than I am but have found it's kind of limited to what you can play on it. Also have my eye a couple other things so need the cash to finance them. Been trying to decide what song to do next. Been thinking to do something from the 60s' but not sure yet. Take Care...
Thanks my friend for the view and nice comment. Honestly I've always had trouble playing an A on the second fret with 3 fingers plus found playing it on the 5th seems to ring better.
The way you play A chord - I call it the ”Rickenbacker A”. Because it jangles and sounds so much better that way! Thanks for Superb video, your playing is top notch.
I used to have a 37012RM with the built in compressor and the 12 saddle bridge. It stayed in tune dead on and had perfect intonation. I regret selling it to this day.
Hi. Thanks for the view and nice comment. I actually sold this one a few months ago as I really wasn't playing it that much. Of course miss it but not in regret mode as of yet. Maybe I'll get the urge to get another one of these days, Thanks again!!
Hi Bob. Thanks again for the view and comment. I just got this guitar a few months ago and am still getting used to playing it. Definitely a different feel for sure!
***** I hear ya man....I have a problem....it's called guitarded....I have more than 20 axes....some of them are pretty special. I have a JDram Warrior that is crazy cool and I don't play it enough. It's got pretty hot pickups and it's mostly for harder rock stuff. ALMOST CAN'T get clean tones out of it. But that's the kind of rock I usually play anyway.... No matter what I pick up for the day I end up playing my PRS SE single cut with birds, Hot Rodded pups and locking tuners AND 8's.....talk about easy string bending! I may never play with 10's again! Action is awesome and it sounds perfect in the man cave. Fender Champ X2 and a 112 cabinet. Took me a long time to dial the sound in and I finally am happy with the tone and feedback and what not. That combo sounds terrible on gigs but it's exacty what I have searched for over the years. You can't practice worth a shit if you don't have the sound. Keep em coming bubba....I still jam with your Bad Co and other stuff. I've picked up a lot of pointers from your playing style. Helped me a ton to get over a plateau once or twice. I'm getting there FINALLY! LLB has helped me a ton too. LOVE those guys! Heard their Boston stuff yet? WOW! SERIOUS musicians! But when you have a pool of musicians to pick from like they do it's kind of hard to screw up.....hehe and Dale is an AWESOME guy!
Wow 20+ guitars? You've got me beat hands down and I was just beginning to think I had a problem ; ) Just kidding of course. I was starting to kind of get a bit of remorse after getting the Rick but have been playing it a lot more and really beginning to get a feel for it. There are a few others I would still like to add to the collection. One being an older original Grestch Country Gentleman or a Tennessean and a PRS but of course both are out of the budget right now and for the forseeable future. Amp wise my Marshall blew up a few weeks ago and started using one of my '69 Bassman heads. I swear using a Boss Blues Driver thru that amp to me sounds as good if not better than the Marshall. Speaking of LLB, No as of yet I have not checked out the Boston series but will do so here shortly. Yes you are absolutely correct in as they are some of the best musicians I've ever heard and absouletly nail everything they attempt to cover. Also really appreciate your comment as to you listening to a few of my vids to learn parts on songs you're working on! Thanks and keep in touch.... Also would love to hear some of your stuff!
Very nice job! I didn't know 'they' used the upper position for the A chord....which makes a lot more sense on a Ric than trying to squeeze your fingers together in the first position!
Hi. Thanks for the view and nice comment. You know I'm not sure they did use the 5th fret A but you are absolutely correct about squeezing your fingers together on the 2nd fret. I've always had a problem with that.
Ricky 360/12's are just magical!
Thanks my friend for your view and great comment!!

Great Job Brother ! Awesome sound with the Ric . Nothing else comes close . Long Live the Byrds Music !
You got that right!! Appreciate the view and nice comment also!!
Yes sir... the most melodious sound ever!
Janglebox and Vox Ac30, Fender or Roland JC?
This song was banging it back when I was a kid, and 50 some years later, it is still banging it !!
Thanks for your view and comment my friend!!
As the former bass player in a local Petty tribute I was always pestering the guys to play this song, but alas it wasn't meant to be. Now that I'm no longer in the band I play along to this song at home. This is a great guitar version, Mike Campbell would be proud!

@jbl5050 nice job getting the mix just right too.
Hi JBL5050,

{sigh}...... unlike all the other tutorials for this song, this one is PERFECT.
Thanks my friend for the view and very nice comment!. Also, sorry for the delayed response.
This has always been a favorite Byrd's number. The Rickenbacker and the Bass guitar are too COOL on this.
Hi my friend. Thanks so much for the view and positive comment and sorry for the late reply.

Such a great sounding guitar and a great song. I met Gene Clark once a long time ago at a bar called O'Toole's in Scranton, Pa.
Thanks so much for the view and nice comment! Yes a Ric 12 string is a one of a kind guitar and interesting story!

It is Tom Petty's version.
And I'll echo my earlier comment - jbl5050 naturally KILLED IT! He can sit in with us any time he wants.

Dude, you are a BADASS!!!!!!!
Thanks so much for the view and nice comment!
Suh-weet sound.
Thanks for the nice comment!
Thank you...amazingly clean, you love this song as I do.
Loved that. Thanks
Thanks and really appreciate the view and nice comment!!
Awesome! Love it
Thank you so much for the view and nice comment Jenny!
Somewhere, Mike Campbell has a huge smile on his face. You can be sure he's very proud.
