I too am old enough to remember a time when all bikes came with a helmet lock. These days I use a cable lock or chain through the chin guard of a full-face helmet to secure it to the bike. A helmet the right way up on the bike is less likely to fill with rain. If you absolutely must use an open-face helmet get a suitable top box and store your helmet in that. It's also a good place to leave your gloves. A thief will not be tempted to steal something he cannot see.
Very nice Stuart - I like it! In the auto industry,, the elimination of small features is called “de-contenting”, and it happens all the time. I returned to motorcycling about 4 years ago and was stunned to find that even expensive bikes like my Honda ST1300 / Pan European lacked a helmet lock. Lower-end models don’t even have a centre stand any longer - which is even more of a PITA. Anyhow - well done Montone!
Yes, all bikes had helmet locks back in the 80s and 90s. Then after a 15 year break from riding, I returned to the sport and when I ask about a helmet lock people look at me like I am insane. I never heard of someone cutting the strap to steal it either and I live in the New York city area.
Very Nice elegant solution. My TU250x had a helmet lock although that's based on a 30 year old design so no surprise, keyed alike to the bike was a nice touch.
I know you put the subject to bed, but I would just like to say I had my helmet stolen in Leicester in the early 1980's by an idiot cutting the straps! There is a happy ending tough. About 10 minutes later I walked passed the thief carrying my helmet. He claimed it was his, I snatched it back and low and behold there was the cut strap minus retaining buckle. When I got home it went into the bin, but it was satisfying to catch him (almost) red handed. Since that day I have never left a helmet locked to the bike by it's strap! 👍
hudsonmike - I can attest to that. I've left mine on a mirror or seat or just looped on the antenna when I had one. Been riding 49 years in Canada and never had a helmet stolen! Mind you I never had a top end helmet.
@@SteeeveO I live in a major eastern US tourist town. . I see many many bikers just leaving their helmets on their bikes and walking through town. I was a police officer there and never had a single report of a helmet stolen. Which frankly surprised me. Although I've never been to Britain, I always thought they were more crime-free than the states. I guess you have to be careful and try to account for the lowest scum in society no matter where you are. For the record, I bit the bullet & added a top box to my Tiger to hold my helmet.
Though I agree that motorcycles do need to be manufactured with proper helmet locks I DID have a helmet stolen off the helmet lock by cutting the strap. I started riding in the 70's and remember owning a few Triumphs and BSA's with the flip up seats on hinges. Personally I don't think I would want any of the new Bonnivilles. I think the Royal Enfield 650 is much closer to the original 650 twin riding experience. It wasn't about power, (though they seemed pretty quick at the time) it was about the experience.
The RE 650 is a great machine. I would happily have one in my garage next to my T120 like Stuart has done. Both have unique characters and are a joy to ride in their own way. Bottom line is you can't go wrong with either one of them.
Hi Stuart, This is a well made part but sadly when fitted to my 2018 Street Twin, all checked for alignment, tightened to 28Nm. Helmet lock bracket was not tight, and moved all over the place. Definitely a good item, but did not work on the Street Twin. Sadly, had to return it.
I use to give a guy a ride to the job in my pickup. One day we passed a bike with the helmet on the bike. He said, If I was walking I would cut the strap on that helmet. I asked, why? He replied, I hate people who ride. I dropped him off at the meeting hall and never gave him another ride to a job. One day the guy who sent us to the jobs asked why I wouldn't give him a ride and I told him. A few days later. The strap cutter quit showing up at the hall. I had heard that he got caught cutting a helmet strap and received some street justice. I have no problem with that because he put peoples live at risk doing what he did.
That helmet lock seems really good! I like the idea of not having to walk around with my helmet but if i wanted to leave my helmet on the bike, i would just chain it to the frame through the chin bar. Unfortunately thieves will cut the helmet straps were i live. It's not uncommon for me to see bicycle wheels chained to posts and trees from people who made the mistake of only looping the the front wheel or even funnier, bikes without a front wheel, from people who only looped the frame or rear wheel...
Looks good for helmets with the Double D strap fastening. I’m not sure if it would be so good for ratchet type fastenings. My Shoei JO has the double D; but my Shoei Neotec 2 ratchet/clip type fastener. Mind you I’d still rather carry the helmet than get a top box for my T120.
Stuart spotted a flaw in this lock. The allen screw could just be removed and helmet and lock taken ,cut of at the tea leafs home. I would suggest that the allen be put in with loads of stud lock on the threads to make far more difficult.Another cheap easy fix could be to superglue a offcut of same size allen key, just a thought Other than that a great product.
@@stuartfillingham What even with a ball ended allen key, looked in video as if there was room to get a key in there, but I haven't got one so if you say its so , so be it .
Won't the Triumph saddle bags interfere with this lock? It would have been nice to see if using the lock is just as easy or not with the saddle bags installed.
I’ve had a/c Motone version on my T100 for sometime, wouldn’t be without one of these, never enjoyed lugging a lid around. Still perfectly aswell and looks as good
Great product, but I have to say, your watch looks very nice, I'm a bit of a watch fan. I wonder if I could get this to fit on my Enfield bullet 500? Another great product, thank you Stuart. The new goldwing helmet lock is interesting, if you have time to research.
Looks great, think I'd still feel uneasy though! Surprisingly, to me at least, you've had the Bell Custom nearly 3 years. It looks to be holding up very well, I'd be interested in hearing any long term observations at some point. I occasionally use my Davida Jet which is excellent but something a bit less mushroom looking might be tempting.
Hi Stu, great video as usual!! Just a quick question. Do you know if this fits the interceptor 650 as I can not see one for the 650 on the site. Thanks a lot!!
Because even if it isn't enough of a PITA to remove the seat (why couldn't Triumph hinge the seat on 1 side?), it IS to get the seat back on. i don't want to have to do that every time I leave the bike to go into a store, etc. PLUS, the miniscule hook spot-welded onto the frame to hang the helmet on could probably be snapped off easily enough by a quick jerk downward on the helmet.
LOl I think your overthinking it John and straying from the realm of sublime to ridiculous! Rather than mess around like that, A determined thief equipped to steal would just throw the entire bike with the aid of an accomplice into the back of a van and deal with the helmet later while he was breaking the bike up for spares. much less of a risk than dismantling components in public and actually quite common!

Do you recommend any rear disc or u locks for the 120? I just noticed today that none of my locks can fit on around or thru my rear disc or sprocket because of the lack of holes and due to how the spoked wheel is designed.
Hi Stuart, very good video. I have the same Triumph leather luggage as you fitted to my T120. Will the helmet lock still operate with the luggage in place?
@stuart fillingham I've yet to find a helmet lock setup that will work with the micro ratchet chin strap on my Neotec 2 and a growing number of other helmets. Motone to the rescue perhaps? Will this part work with panniers bags mounted? Seems a bit tight space wise, and it looks like the helmet was resting on the exhaust pipe, or was that just the camera angle? Thanks again for the helpful videos. Cheers!
Hi Mako yes ratchet type fasteners are a problem for any helmet lock im afraid. panniers fitted should not be a problem, and the helmet should be rested on the rear footpeg to keep it clear of a hot exhaust, not that it actually reaches the exhaust with my set up!
Who here doesn’t own a liquid cooled Triumph and isn’t in the market for a helmet lock but watched the entire video anyway?
I did
