I actually appreciate that once in a time I used to be broke skater, I just couldn't afford to buy things as a kid. My skateboard had a chips, both trucks were different make, shit wheels, shit bearings. I had fake vans which would break after two weeks of skating. There were no skateparks in my city and all these things as in the video.
Now that I work and it's twenty years on from that moment, the skate world has also changed. I have two ready sets in the boot of my car, I travel around the coutry to skateparks of my choice with my son. When I get bored with my skate shoes or they get worn I buy new ones. So as I said I appreciate to be broke skater in the past because I am so stoked to be able to buy these things nowadays. Be blessed brothers and sister.

Same here! I still get stoked to go out and be able to buy new gear because I remember what it was like growing up and having to skate hand me downs and used stuff all the time just to be able to keep skating. So even though I can easily afford it now, I still get just as stoked as I would in the past to be able to go out and buy new stuff when I want to and not just because I skipped a few meals and scrapped some money together to finally afford it.

I've always wanted to open up a shop called "hand me down skates." I remember being a much younger guy. (i'm in my mid fourties presently.) all of my friends were wearing the dopest gear and had the illist matching outfits. I was wearing old hand me downs from one of my cousins & a great friend of mine.I strived to be one of the boys. Those times made myself appreciate everything that was sent my way, be it clothes, boards -random acts of kindness from my crew I skated with. Always strive to lift your friends up.-even if it is just a "kind" word on a specific trick they are attempting and you already have dialed in.Just that little bit of attention and positivity can help that particular person know they are appreciated in the crew of life. Thank you for reading this post, my friends.

I had hand me down boards , I taught the skaters bike tricks and they taught me . The one that hit home for real was the food ! We found a fruit stand chain that had these quart jugs of fruit punch , lemonade ,lime and blue berry juice for a quarter . Also we found that churches had a water dispenser in them , later we found out it was blessed holy water ,lol . Good time good times

My Bro Steve cut down his wheels to the minimum in 1992-93 looking almost like the wheels in the thumbnail. He cut a Bicycle tire and put it on his pulling-foot shoe for the grip. The 90's was crazy, they tried everything, the board changed shape almost every month. LongNose,ShortTail,DoubleTail ect. It was a great time.

I feel this, growing up broke and skating was hard, my board kicks were worn down so much you could barely tell i had kicks, the shoes were 90 per cent shoe goo, my wheels were so worn down it looked like i was rolling on the bearings, the bearings kept busting coz they were budget and half were taken from cheap roller blades so you'd be rolling down a hill then see all the ball bearings bust and roll all over the place before your board came to a screaming holt. As for transportation, that's what the board was for, me and my ghetto crew would ride everywhere, that was half the fun. Now i'm older and can afford all the gear I wish I had when I was young, but I buy all that for my son who skates now and make sure he has all the opportunities in skating that i didn't, that makes me feel good. PS. just recently bought the ES Muska Re issue from 1997 for myself and that was a dream of mine growing up, feels good to finally get them.

I’ve always been fascinated by skateboarding, but I’ve never grew up with a board, but my cousin is really into skateboarding. I’m a junior in high school and there is not a single person that skates. The only way I get my “skate boarding” fix is by wearing heelys to school. Not having a board or anybody to skate with is probably my biggest downside of being a “broke” skater, although my bank account is good enough to buy myself the gear I need, I would still have disapproval from my parents…

  • @dopedrums
    @dopedrums 4 месяца назад +1

I was so broke in the early 90's that I used my skateboard as my main source of transportation every day. This was many years before the white horrible street wheels came into the picture, I always rode my super soft Powell Peralta ramp wheels and they were just as small as the white street wheels but felt like longboard wheels only without the bite. We built our own skateparks too, poles from fallen over street signs, plywood sheets and boards were "borrowed" from construction sites and we hauled that shit home in our arms riding our boards. In the winter time we removed our wheels and trucks and rode them in the snow, often downhill. When summertime came around we just screwed them shits back on again. Good times! 😅

I grew up a borderline broke to broke skater. I had a ATM or mini-logo board in a skatepark full of kids with zero and baker skateboards. I had a pair of airwalks in a skatepark full of kids with emerica or circa shoes. I had a no brand mp3 player in a skatepark full of kids with ipods. luckily I grew up in a very un-superficial town so most kids didn't care and I had no problems fitting in but its easy to feel insecure when everyone is rocking new gear all the time and you're slumming it with the same stuff until it gives out. Honestly, in retrospect, I'm glad I grew up broke because it taught me not only to not be superficial but it pushed me to be a better skater. If I couldn't impress people with money, I wanted to do it with ability. I may have been broke but I could skate circles around almost everyone I knew even on a bad day lol.

Beat up boards is why when I stopped skateboarding I took my boards, my main board which at the time was barely skated and my spare board I always had a fully assembled board in my trunk in case my main breaks, down to the local skatepark and found the two kids with the rattiest boards and gave them mine, $300+ boards. Almost carbon fiber boards, bones Swiss bearing, ricta wheels, thieves trucks etc. I knew what it was like growing up with a ratty board. I used to get new (used) boards only when a friend of mine who was sponsored by the local skateshop got a new board.

Shorty's Muska red tail, Independent trucks, bones reds bearings, spitfire wheels, Lucky hardware and risers..... I ollied off the curb at the library, slipped out board went shooting into the road...BOOM truck runs it over and just keeps on going... I skated hand-me down decks for like a year and a half after that. Anytime a friend would get a new deck I'd get the razor tails, the chippy mcgees, the stress cracks.... but learning to do a lot of tricks on those shitty decks made me have so much fun when I finally got a new deck. Yeah cool story I know lol.

Today I went to the skatepark with my not even close to a good board skateboard from a fricking clothing store, I'm a beginner btw, I cannot stress how bad it was just rolling around, it barely even rolls, so i went and got me a good board from my local skateshop, was an insane Improvement, I didnt even have to push it the wind moved me

When you live in such a broken down poor town they cant afford good roads so you can't go a foot without having to push and depending on where you are there either aren't sidewalks or the sidewalks have 3 pot holes then a huge spot where it just goes up and down at 45 degree angle, and the city would rather build playgrounds and crap than fix all this, thanks a lot Wellsville

Late 80's early 90's I wore those bullet wheels until they were wafer thin...those slides killed those wheels, used to ride toxic also...my trucks were always ground through to the pin also😂😂.We used to go to converted church called the temple in Anniesland,it had the biggest vert ramp in the country at the time and a street section..Happy memories 🎉😅

Try super gluing a bit of leather to the spots that get super worn on your shoes. It makes it last so much longer.

How to fix the beat up board problem?
Instead of immediately buying a new board with that same price, get one made out with Canadian maple, it's just good and durable, perfect for long term based skateboards.

Yo I literally paused to go to a different window, came back and there was a message about being fast. I wasn´t fast just lucky lol.
Also for sure, getting a ride is the hardest. I live 30 minutes away from a park and can only go on the weekends sometimes. I usually just ride up and down my street unless I head into our little ¨downtown¨ area.

In my city, our skatepark back than got few ramps from goverment. It was nice and everything, but we had no U ramp. Someday, one just popped up out from nowhere and till nowdays nobody knows who made it. It was just there, it have been ridden VERY hard. Sad part is, city gave it no love, since it was not their, skaters tryied hard to keep it usable, but it had to be removed, since it become real hazard. Good old days... :)

Sorry for the double comment. My first deck was a razor tailed, water logged Andy Roy Anti Hero with some grind kings, rusted china bones, and 48 World wheels that started life as a 54.
The nineties were a fun era for adolescence. It seems a last gasp of unaccountability without immediate documentation IRL. Old man shakes fist at cloud. Whatever, get it shredders! Run wild in the streets!

I live in a small town up in Montana so there isnt many skate parks or skaters in general but a few weeks back my dad was on our commitee board and i went in with him and suggested that they could build a small skate park and now there's one being built a block away from where i live. Only downside is i am just starting out skating so i cant do many tricks or even do a simple ollie.
