I remember what I did to save money on shoes back in the 90's was an ollie pad. It was basically a piece of leather you would add to the shoe that would do all the kicking movements. The companies that sold these pads were pricey, but if you went to goodwill or somewhere you can get fabrics, you could just cut your own out and put it on the shoe. It made my shoes last a very long time.

One of the best ways to save money would be purchasing a blank deck. Blank decks are usually $20-$30, much cheaper than decks that has graphics. Boards chip/snap eventually so I usually just use blank decks. For trucks I’d say stick to thunders or independents, usually they cost about $40-$50. Wheels it’s probably good to invest a little money for since cheap wheels get flat spots much sooner. Probably good to stick to bones STF usually they cost about $30. For bearings I’d say the most affordable ones with good quality would be bones reds ABEC7. Those bearings are $15, very cheap! And they’ll get the job done. For shoes it’s good to go to Ross and TJ maxx. I usually find a pair of Nike SB for $15-$20. Sometimes a pair of DCs for the same price too if I get lucky. Skate shoes rip over period of time anyways 🤷🏽♂️. If you wanna save though or not spend too much money you can’t be picky but I know that we have personal preference.
Speaking of saving your shoes, that rubber grip tape stuff is pretty tight. I can for sure tell the difference between sandpaper and the rubber compound, but it took about half an hour to get used to and after that it feels solid. I saw a bunch of skate youtubers saying it would only be good for kids, but its good for cheapskates too. Just don't step in a puddle or you're screwed.
I just got my first deck(a death wish complete), soft wheels, and protective gear (helmet+Kneepads+wrist guard) for just over 110 dollars. The workers there truly engaged in conversation and asked about it. They found out I was new and my dad(who was with me) knew about sports like skating. They walked me through the process and what to look for in the future.
Where man. I just spent $100 on a baker complete which I had previously heard that the baker brand is great, but if I knew I could have paid 10 dollars more for extra soft wheels and protective gear I would have :/
I work as a delivery boy and whenever i get tips i just put it aside so if i need a replacement on something i can use that money so working in quarantine i get like 5 bucks tips a lot so i bought new shoes and a deck with those tips
I have a good tip for your shoes. I skate my older vans and as i first tryed to do tricks i noticed that they got holes. I simply cut off a piece of an old belt and glued a stripe along on the right shoe so now as i skate the leather of the beld gets sanded down and as it is sanded down i just glue another layer on it and it is as good as new. If you do it right it won’t even look bad. My sole is not sanded down but you can also use a piece of an old bycicle wheel and glue it on it and can add another layer if its worn down.
Tom Hoodie That's right, it's even better. I am wearing the Globe Empire for the third time. I did it for the first time. After that its always the same with the following shoes.
Yeah, there's no point in gluing the shoes when there's already a hole. Especially the harder shoe goo stuff or super glue trick will allow you to get a strong surface that can be skated pretty long before it is gone. It's cheaper to buy some new glue than buying new shoes, so be smart. Just add glue on day one. The nose, kickflip spot and ollie spot will wear most. Maybe add glue to the heelflip spot too. But ideally those spots should be pretty much the same for any shoe. Oh and maybe put some glue around the lowest lace holes, it'll prevent ripping laces early.
I skated my authentic and i do a D.I.Y with my shoes i removed the old insole and i replace it to my old ultra cush and it works. And i do my ollie and 180's hole to a suade patch i made and patch it up
I got some vans shoes and did some Ollies and they got beat up but I got sketchers and they still haven’t ripped and I’ve been using them for a couple weeks
I always try to not worry about which end is the front of my board and sometimes flip it around on purpose to avoid getting a razor tail as fast, and to distribute the wear
Tip for all purchases (excluding cars/ houses/etc) if you can’t buy three of it at a time you can’t afford it. Also buying shoes off the clearance/sale rack
skate stuff is really much cheaper in the US than here in Norway. Decks usually start on 80$ alone, a new custom complete without the most expensive trucks and bearings will leave you at about 300$ with discount. Shoes are usually from 90$ and up aswell. Insanely expensive to skate here, i usually just ducttape my shoes when they rip and skate with them till its no longer possible to get grip because of the tape lol
i do this thing where i sand down the tail when it gets too razored. or since i dont do a lot of nollies i'll use the nose as my tail if i'm doing a scoopy trick like an impossible. they say get bigger wheels to last long but i just continue to skate em when they're tiny and use risers.
For beginners, I recommend oxelo. It's a cheap brand with pretty decent stuff. On the last few years they've been improving the quality of their boards (they sell'em full like board trucks and all). But I think their shoes are like the best part. I bought a pair 3 years ago and it broke recently (when I mean broke there's hole on every possible part of it). So yeah quite good , they do sales too
1. Bearings If you need to replace one or two bearings, you dont need to buy one set of bearing. Just go to the hardware store or machinery shop and ask 608 size. Its more cheaper than buy a whole set. Clean the grease with oil remover 2. Shoes Use glue gun on ollie area. It might lil bit messy but more you skate, more smooth the area would be
I would recommend buying decs etc. with a friend so you dont have to buy more at the time when you cant afford it and stil can get the mentioned discount
A lot of skate shops have their own brand of boards wheels and sometimes trucks and bearings. And they're cheaper than brand names companies. Amazon sells blank boards
I’m currently rocking a greenblue water paint blind deck with black neon yellow thunder team trucks, with Ricita jell wheels. And I have a spare deck, half graffic enjoi deck
dude trust me, prices have indeed come down since the 90s! and not just a little bit, and way more products now then ever before. Tons of options out there!
Im goofy, so I ask my regular friends to give me their old broken shoes... As they are regular the right shoe will be almost intact and I can use my left shoes as those are almost intact
A small dab of "amazing goop" , or "shoe goo" on those canvas shoes(thumbnail) in the Oliie pad area ,BEFORE you even put them on your feet and the canvas will out last the soles making them EXCELLENT bang for the buck..
Selling parts from your old skateboard when you buy a new one is a great idea. Mine was run over by a bus, but one of the hangers, the wheels and the bearings survived lol.
this one guy helped me out with my kingpin nut bc I lost it riding, and instead of buying a $24 dollar kit that had like one thing I really only needed it there, he told me to go to my nearest hardware store and find a nut that fits your kingpin. okay that's it thank u for coming to my ted talk c:💙
My best tip for saving money: Non-abrasive grip tape. Will save you literally hundreds on shoes over the course of a year. Just be sure to cut the grip tape more than you would normal grip tape to prevent edge tearing.
Just watched your skate shoes video and was super annoyed by your pronunciation and up talk but in this one it´s so much better. Now I can subscribe! :)
i haven’t been skating long, only about a month, but in my experience my nike killshots have lasted me the entire time, while i got multiple holes in my vans the first day.
also a good clothing brand for skating in warmer places in my opinion is gymshark. The shirts are well made and not too expensive and are very comfortable to skate in.
My vans used to rip on the sole before anything else. I'm a big fan of emerica these days, if you can find some, the 2013 herman g6s are the best shoe I've ever skated.
i like the idea of marine grease in bearings but i've only been testing it for a week now. a pain to clean but allegedly more waterproof than any other bearing-appropriate lubricant
This wasn't mentioned in the video, but you can try nonabrasive grip tape for example DKL. it actually does work as long as you don't get it too dirty.
I've found beat up completes at Goodwill or play it again sports, the trucks and sometimes the wheels are salvageable. Litely skated shoes at Goodwill too if you're lucky to find some.
Just buy some shoes that are resistant to the grip tape. I wear vans when I skate but any shoe that is resistant is fine. Don’t spend lots of money on stuff, go to thrift stores or cheap stores.
Mini logo bearings, mini logo wheels (C cuts), tensor alloy trucks, bulk buy blank decks. Suede skateshoes - skate them for a day to check out your wear spots, then put some gorilla tape on those spots, it'll keep them alive a lot longer. Get a pair of footprint painkiller socks, cut out the shin pad, throw away the sock and just slide the pad into whatever socks you are wearing .👍
For my shoes I'm currently using suede patches from stick and flick. I can cover the holes in my shoes and keep skating. It was 6.99 for 3 patches. Free shipping. There is other brands too. Just happened to try that one.
For shoes I definitely recommend checking your local Ross or Burlington. Last week I found some legit Vans Hi Tops for $35 when they normally retail for $70+. First time I’ve ever found vans there but now I’ll always take a look every once in a while from now on
Put Duct Tape on the Tail and Nose Of Your Board, just get some colored duct tape and put on 5 to 10 layers of it on. I’ve been skating a deck for 3 months and my tail and nose are still brand new. I haven’t tested it I don’t think it does but it might reduce your pop but I don’t think it does.
I highly recommend buying from the German brand "Titus" they are focused on being slightly cheaper but still being able to keep up with the high end stuff. Been using *The 5.25 Hollow Trucks* 24,99€ - 29,99€ and *The Classic Wheels* (101A) 19,99€ for over a year now still haven't met good old flatspots yet.
to save money, especially for beginners or I you have to buy a new skate, I usually get a prebuild which is cheaper and some brands are actually durable and as time goes you start to replace the parts with higher quality parts and start to personalize it
Found a full set up board worth around $120 on offer up for $20, all it needed was a little love tbh, so offer up is a great place to look for a setup, just have to wait a little to find the best deal
When he said most skaters had jobs, it reminded me of the time I saw a Walmart worker going home. He just dropped his board and went down to the sidewalk.

skate stuff is really much cheaper in the US than here in Norway.
The skateboard I ordered just came in today, I can’t even imagine throwing it around, it’s like my baby
So yeah quite good , they do sales too
1. Bearings
If you need to replace one or two bearings, you dont need to buy one set of bearing. Just go to the hardware store or machinery shop and ask 608 size. Its more cheaper than buy a whole set. Clean the grease with oil remover
2. Shoes
Use glue gun on ollie area. It might lil bit messy but more you skate, more smooth the area would be
I would recommend buying decs etc. with a friend so you dont have to buy more at the time when you cant afford it and stil can get the mentioned discount
No idea who started the old lady lawn bowling shoe craze but I never stopped buying purpose built shoes for skating. Chunkier the better.
him :a board is usually 30-50 bucks
me: cries in dancing longboarding
Atleast you guys don’t have to buy a deck every 3 months
A lot of skate shops have their own brand of boards wheels and sometimes trucks and bearings. And they're cheaper than brand names companies. Amazon sells blank boards
Bones reds have always been my bearings if choice
shoe goo i’ve been skating my shoes for 6 months
I’m currently rocking a greenblue water paint blind deck with black neon yellow thunder team trucks, with Ricita jell wheels. And I have a spare deck, half graffic enjoi deck
i keep my old skate shoes and cut out patches of suede to cover up the holes. also glue/ tape your laces to prevent ripping.
dude trust me, prices have indeed come down since the 90s! and not just a little bit, and way more products now then ever before. Tons of options out there!
Im goofy, so I ask my regular friends to give me their old broken shoes... As they are regular the right shoe will be almost intact and I can use my left shoes as those are almost intact
Problem woth that is shoes wear to the feet of the person wearing em so they wont fit correctly
Basic but SOLID advice. Great often overlooked topic.
3:00 That looks sick 😲 Do you know the name of the video ???
Thats nyjah, just look up some of his older parts, it's gonna be there somewhere
Voice of a skater - face of a ginger angel ❤
Wish i knew this before my shoes got destroyed 3 days after buying them
omg bro same i literally destroyed my converse in just 2 days
this one guy helped me out with my kingpin nut bc I lost it riding, and instead of buying a $24 dollar kit that had like one thing I really only needed it there, he told me to go to my nearest hardware store and find a nut that fits your kingpin.
okay that's it thank u for coming to my ted talk c:💙
Sorry, but it's like each of his sentence ends with a question mark.
Good tips btw.
Not really
He's also yelling.
one way u can save on skating is when u get a new board if u can i would suggest reusing ur old trucks if they are still in pretty ok shape
Buy a few skate shoes from the thrift stores as backup shoes: they’re super cheap and are already broken in
The only video that ACTUALLY helps
My best tip for saving money:
Non-abrasive grip tape. Will save you literally hundreds on shoes over the course of a year.
Just be sure to cut the grip tape more than you would normal grip tape to prevent edge tearing.
This channel is so underrated
I picked up a pair of nyjahs on sale for £40. I understand that they are a new style for skate shoes but they only lasted 3 weeks before busting 🤨🤨
Good to know bro👍👍. I am actually struggling with my kickflip at the moment. I am basically landing on the board but 1 foot always falls off
@Miami thats not always the case
Just watched your skate shoes video and was super annoyed by your pronunciation and up talk but in this one it´s so much better. Now I can subscribe! :)
Try to get some shoes at outlet stores like Marshall’s and Burlington etc I bought some grey janoskis for 30 dollars
Facts
add to that Ross
I got a pair of Jordan 1's for $40 this way and now I need a new pair I cant stomach paying over $100 for shoes I am about to rip up again
i haven’t been skating long, only about a month, but in my experience my nike killshots have lasted me the entire time, while i got multiple holes in my vans the first day.
also a good clothing brand for skating in warmer places in my opinion is gymshark. The shirts are well made and not too expensive and are very comfortable to skate in.
I highly recommend going to your local Marshall’s, Burlington’s, Ross, etc. It is very common to find discounted skate shoes.
My vans used to rip on the sole before anything else. I'm a big fan of emerica these days, if you can find some, the 2013 herman g6s are the best shoe I've ever skated.
Skater: "my board is worth 150$"
Me, a bmx rider: "hold my beer"
Every bmx rider is just a failed skateboarder
@@daddy._._.nathan facts
i like the idea of marine grease in bearings but i've only been testing it for a week now. a pain to clean but allegedly more waterproof than any other bearing-appropriate lubricant
Have separate life shoes vs skateshoes , buy “pro” vans
This wasn't mentioned in the video, but you can try nonabrasive grip tape for example DKL. it actually does work as long as you don't get it too dirty.
I literally just bought the shoes in the thumbnail literally my face rn 😐
Get a pair of footprint painkiller socks, cut out the shin pad, throw away the sock and just slide the pad into whatever socks you are wearing
.👍
Damm didn’t realize that this video was uploaded an a hour ago lol
For my shoes I'm currently using suede patches from stick and flick. I can cover the holes in my shoes and keep skating. It was 6.99 for 3 patches. Free shipping. There is other brands too. Just happened to try that one.
I'm disappointed that he didn't mention non abrasive griptape 😭
Seeing the bowling ball hit the brick and not break it was pretty cool
"Local shop" bro my local skate shop is Walmart
i love that skate shop
For shoes I definitely recommend checking your local Ross or Burlington. Last week I found some legit Vans Hi Tops for $35 when they normally retail for $70+. First time I’ve ever found vans there but now I’ll always take a look every once in a while from now on
Yes finally first!!!
How did you comment 9 minutes before the video was released
Put Duct Tape on the Tail and Nose Of Your Board, just get some colored duct tape and put on 5 to 10 layers of it on. I’ve been skating a deck for 3 months and my tail and nose are still brand new. I haven’t tested it I don’t think it does but it might reduce your pop but I don’t think it does.
“ a lot of them are still in school and don’t even have jobs yet “
*me who’s in fifth grade*
*yes*
I highly recommend buying from the German brand "Titus" they are focused on being slightly cheaper but still being able to keep up with the high end stuff. Been using *The 5.25 Hollow Trucks* 24,99€ - 29,99€ and *The Classic Wheels* (101A) 19,99€ for over a year now still haven't met good old flatspots yet.
Just take your mom’s credit card
I was skating for the first time in a while and my trucks def need to be loosened. I could not turn much at all. Learned a lesson. Need a key
yeah that’s cool but where’s yours skating? i see all these things about skating but i don’t see you
In France, baker boards are really expensive, they are 80€ without grip.
Who else is watching this in 2024
I clean my trucks every day and that is my tip to keeping them nice!
steal the boards and shoes at skatepark so 0 dollars for everthing
Sometimes I skate vans authentics but with a piece of suede (from an old shoe) glued on the sides
to save money, especially for beginners or I you have to buy a new skate, I usually get a prebuild which is cheaper and some brands are actually durable and as time goes you start to replace the parts with higher quality parts and start to personalize it
Found a full set up board worth around $120 on offer up for $20, all it needed was a little love tbh, so offer up is a great place to look for a setup, just have to wait a little to find the best deal
you can also buy good bearings at the hardware store which cost much less but don't have cool stickers or fancy brand names
Tips that works for me
- buy skate shoes at a outlet or go to goodwill or a thrift store
-buy a skate deck off offer up or letgo
When he said most skaters had jobs, it reminded me of the time I saw a Walmart worker going home. He just dropped his board and went down to the sidewalk.
