6:41 skateboarding like bowling, requires technical skill built up through practice. I believe that’s what makes it a sport. Not the competition but the act of training itself
Idk why there is still a debate on "Is Skateboarding A Sport" it is, plain and simple. You are doing a physical activity, you purchase equipment, you practice, you get hurt, it has a large following, it had major events, it goes to an Olympic level
Half of these i can say I've never heard of lmao what do you mean certain balance stances are "cheating"??? Skateboarding is a sport, it makes you move, it makes you sweat, and you have to dedicate time if you want to be good at whichever discipline you practice. I've always worn a helmet, even when I just rode a cruiser to school, hospital visits are expensive, man. As far as brands go, the only brand I'll ever be faithful to is Indy trucks, everything else is trash
This is one of those things that makes me appreciate how things work in this side of the lake, on hispanic skate communities you don't find this sort of "i don't have anything to complain so i'll complain anyways" mentality i see on US communities, maybe because over here is not that popular and common but we even tend to befriend bikers and rollers, i use a long board and still learning to use a skateboard but all the people i met are always so kind and willing to help, something i barely hear to happen in US, from what i've heard these past 2 months, if anything, i would be hated and looked as a poser, i don't blame the skating community as a whole, but the way things work over there
USA longboarders talk shit and are the ones looking for conflict they assume they have to flex more edgy to normal skateboarders, i try my best to ignore them. They lack humility and respect. They are just an evolution of the rollerblader.
9:38 "skateboarding is supposed to be dangerous and rebellious" - what!?!?! It's supposed to bring joy and spiritual freedom, to be defined by the individual. Most people on bikes don't wear helmets... is it because they are rebellious individuals that embrace the danger? Maybe I need my coffee before typing on the internet. No hate to the channel creator, keep doing your thing!
I definitely get the ear pods part. I ride solo really, since I'm probably the only guy that skates in the neighborhood. But wearing ear pods are dangerous when cruising around on the road. It could kill you. I only wear ear pods when I go early morning cruise. Other than that, I don't recommend wearing it.
You should always be aware of your surroundings without needing to hear 🤦♂️ it's what your eyes are for, always keep checking behind and left and right. Exactly how they teach you to drive a car, you never need any audio to drive a car so why would you need to on a board? Your opinion is awful 🤦♂️🤡
I'd say skateboarding is a sport. If you look at those gymnastic performances (I don't know the names; moving around on the beam or a horizontal pole, dancing with a sash or ball, etc), no-one is forcing a scoring criteria on it. You could realistically freestyle them too and they are considered as sports.
6:44 ok but what bout the other grinds? Where only the board touches the rail or when you're directly in the middle of the trucks without touching either tire? (I don't know the trick names)
Am i a casual if i use a skateboard just to go from a to be? In my city public transport is really busy in summertime. So i bought a cruiser to travel from college to home. And i only got kicked of my board one time from like a year ago when i started using the board.
Half the time my AirPods are not even on/out of battery but it helps me stay focused. I choose wisely when to skate with and when without headphones. I purposely PUT THEM ON to avoid small talk when I am in the middle of getting my mindset right.
Why is the pads thing even a debate? As someone who's taken up skating again as a hobby in their 30s after 20 years, I can't run the risk of getting bodied on the bottom of a concrete ramp and putting myself out of work for weeks, unlike when I was younger where I could throw myself around without a care in the world.
New skaters should be welcomed if they actually have an interest in the activity and like to skate/want to improve. A certain degree of gatekeeping is necessary for the people who don’t actually respect skating/do it as a trend
the headphone one I don't understand. at least for me every one has a code. assume there using headphones. We all just wave at each other to get each others attention. Its always basic understanding that if your wearing earbuds you should always be aware of everything around you.
I always wear these 2 zoo York shirts and ripped jeans or planes shorts would that be like me thinking I look cool or stuff cause I don’t want to come off like any of these stuff
There's a lot of old skaters now, We have all broken bones and have the aches and pains every morning, So yeah, we wear pad and helmets on the park. I really encourage my son to d the same. I'd prefer he both gets to skate and does not have all the problems I have from having to replace both kneecaps. Don't like the look, it's fine, that's why skate paints are so baggy. Wear your pads under your pants. But use your pads and helmets when your pushing it. Skating has history now, and learning from history is good thing.
when i was younger, in the 90s, i was a core skater, and i can only think of one or two people i skated with who would be considered gatekeepers. Most of our crew didn't much care about your fashion, skills, or even level of participation. If you had an interest of any kind in the scene, and weren't a complete tool, you were pretty much a welcomed part of the scene. We had all types of core skater fashions too... old school punk rock types, the iconic baggy jeans and wallet chain (me), cordorouy pants... we liked to skate, wasnt about fashion or flex of any kind. ahhh, i miss those days. Time to dust of the board!
6:19 is my local skatepark also called riverwalk or Bradenton skatepark. been going there for a while to skate pretty chill people the environment is a little bad but really good park imo.🤘🤘❤❤
***Opinion*** (sorry for the mistake I speak French) 1:earbuds are ok, as long as it's not too loud (you should be able to hear other people). Music can really boost your mood in a skate session. 2:designers cloth should not be skated, they are ugly, useless and not practical. 3: skateboarders can be sponsored by any company, money is money and if you are not interested in the brand that is sponsor, just don't buy it. 4:yes it's a trick, and it's really cool. 5:the brands probably get their products from only a few factories and better or worse product is just a mental thing. 6:yes it's a sport because it's in the Olympics, you sweat, you can lose weight, you work with your body and wikipedia says it's a sport (and they never lie😂) 7:you can cross pinch your grind, it's just a way to make them easier and they are not feeble grind. 8: gatekeeping shouldn't be a thing people can see if your a real skater but poser are not skater, they are on another group. 9:just invent a name for the trick if you argue or do it in skate 3 and check the name of it😂 10:pads are a bit too extreme but helmet should not be hated. The "cool danger" of skating should not be glorified. If you don't wear pads the worst that can happen is that you scratch your knees or elbows but If you don't wear a helmet, you could die. Plus, for the "non-cool" factor of a helmet just depends on you, I have one (no shit) and it got like 100+ real skate stickers that I got overs the years so you really just have to customize it to make it look way better and people will stop bothering about it.
How are pads extreme but a helmet isn’t? Is it extreme I don’t wanna open up my knees and elbows after a fall? How about wearing protection is just smart but it doesn’t matter wether you wear it or not, it’s just personal preference
Pads are extreme? My knees have been saved a ton of abuse by wearing knee pads. My wrists aren't sprained partly due to my wrist guards and being able to fall to my knees. Even for the disastrous slam when I get hung on the coping, I would MUCH rather take that with pads on than none. From the motorcycle world, ATGATT All the gear, all the time.
@@thepieisalieofficial pads can be helpful in some case but a lot of skater dont really fall on their knees. Hurting your knees Is not fun, but hurting your head can be wayyy more harmful(☠️)
Man I loved skating with headphones!!! I'd really get into it! It's so funny cause back then, digital music wasn't around. So I was constantly praying for a cd player that didn't skip. And today it's not a issue. Lol....
I usually wear a Light Blue nike hoodie and some black nike sweatpants and my shoes are the Nike SB Adversary Premium Blues so idk if im one of those people who wear designer or not cuz idk if nike counts as designer so can i get some help in the comment section.
My thoughts are; why even bother how anyone else skates? Everyone got their own style, skateboarding is an art of expressing yourself, not you telling someone else how to ride. People who gatekeep or hates on another skater for no good reason should get a life and worry about their own sketchy ass. Imagine being that kind of turd. Ew.
5:50 I think that skateboarding is a sport. It’s phisical, you need to train certain muscles to do certain things and it takes years and years of practice. I mean if chess can be considered a sport so can skateboarding.
Skating is a sport , just not a organized one like football, skating is a freestyle sport , just like other sports you have to practice to get better , you can get injured, it’s fun for some people, and it’s requires being physically active
If someone is wearing airpods and skateboarding that doesn't mean that person doesn't want to listen to anyone and do their own thing it means that, that person doesn't want to be interrupted its the person,s own time and afcourse the person who,s dancing and skateboarding is not serious about skateboarding
I like the girl and chocolate comparison. You should do a video on all the brother and sister companies of skateboards like habitat alien workshop zero and mystery. Just a suggestion.
i sometimes wear one headphone with quiet music seeing as i skate alone always but when im cruising on the road i dont wear any headphones, only when im doing tricks and practising things that only require a small area of the road
I personally feel like Skateboarding is both a casual hobby you can get into, and A sport you could work your way towards. Skateboarding has been around for long enough that the skill ceiling is high if not limitless. If you can do tricks, someone can do more, or better tricks. It doesn't have to be a sport, but considering it's in the Olympics, I think the decision is made that it's a sport.
I grew up being a core, poor, skater and im kinda more on the traditional skater side with some of these tricks some of these tricks just look like "flip your board as hard as you can and just try to land back on it" and some how thats a new trick but cant even name it.
Damn. The layers just keep adding up. I ride goofy 90% of the time, but I only push in switch, so basically regular mongo, I guess? And now you're telling me I lock grinds in backwards on top of all that 😂
The thing about wearing a helmet is, people can potentially just trip and die anytime anywhere just walking around on flatground if they take a nasty enough fall right to their dome. So should people be wearing a helmet every time they step outside to take a walk? Skaters don't wear helmets or pads not because they are trying to get an adrenaline rush from the danger factor... it's because landing on your head is just not a significant risk. In fact, skaters are probably even LESS likely while skating than average people are just walking around to have some horrible fall where a helmet would save them, because skaters while skating are CONSTANTLY thinking about and maintaining their balance, while every possible person walking around anywhere is not necessarily focusing on and being ready to recover their balance should they trip or take some sort of stumble
There is also the factor of pads actually making things MORE dangerous potentially, because it gives people more confidence to try more and more dangerous things because they have the illusion of being more protected. Not wearing a helmet keeps people grounded and not hucking themselves off things they know they aren't ready for
I only started skating in 1988, so I haven’t been in the game too long. But my two cents is that one of the things that makes skateboarding awesome is that it can be whatever the individual wants it to be. Beyond basic etiquette when you’re skating around other people, I don’t think anything else really matters. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but that’s all it is. Just an opinion. My opinion: shut up and skate. 🤠🤘
There's a huge difference between dragging the nose or tail on a nosegrind/5-0 versus different pinches you can do on a 50-50. Skateboard grinds/slides are defined by what surface is touching what other surface. There are no differences in what surfaces are in contact with other surfaces when doing different 50-50 pinches, but dragging your nose/tail is completely adding another surface contact point. You could still consider it a nosegrind or whatever, but I would consider it a scruffed nosegrind vs a proper nosegrind that was actually balanced.
@@ianhale4466 nothing about my analysis changes. It's still a scraped 5-0. Someone's body dimensions supposedly making them incapable of performing the correct actions doesn't just exempt them from rules of what defines a trick
I can’t skate with my earbuds in I’m not very good but I have a good ass Ollie I literally can’t do any ollies when I have earbuds in cuz I use the noise from the pop yo know when to lift my back foot and I’m super paranoid so I like to be aware of my surroundings
"the idea is that sports are physical activities that require a scoring system in order to play them but since skateboarding doesn't require a scoring system it's not actually a sport" Okay by that logic nothing is a sport you can play basketball and not keep score little kid events do that all the time with the everybody's a winner attitude which I hate but that's a different topic you can play hockey you can play soccer you can play literally anything just for fun nothing requires a scoring system I use to play basketball just shooting hoops and such with friends not caring about scoring at all by that definition nothing is a sport because nothing nessacarily needs a scoring system the only time a scoring system is needed is if you want a winner but if you're just doing it for a winner and not because you just enjoy doing it then you really shouldn't be doing that hobby in the first place
Also yiu have a picture of Nyjah wearing earbuds on the thumbnail. It's a picture from SLS where he's the only one in the park at the moment so he is totally ok to have an earbud in.
I see professional skateboarding is a sport, but street skating is an art. I mean, you’re using your surrounding resources to make something of your own. That’s the creativity of skateboarding people are always coming up with new ways to skate.
Sliding the tail/nose on 5-0/nose grind should be separate tricks. Neither is wrong but they do function quite differently. It ads a manual when the board is not touching. Where as sliding is just the balance of the grind.
I almost always wear a helmet but sometimes i take it of for flatground. I think Andy Anderson is one of the best skaters rn and his helmet looks cool. And also pls dont use earbuds while you are sharing the park. But if you are having a solo session you should be able to do whatever you want

But my next board is definitely gonna be a skateboard. And IDC if anyone looks down on me for wearing elbow/knee pads. I ain't taking those off for no one 🤣
If skateboarding isn’t a sport i guess skiing isn’t either, or skeet shooting, or mountain biking, or motocross, or even most sports because a lot of sports require physical activity but don’t need a scoring system to play them or partake in them
The debate about if skateboarding is a sport or not people say there's no scoring system but isn't a game of skate a scoring system i know it's not required but it is a scoring system

Im a core skater but i agree with casual skaters like it doesnt matter if you mall grab as long as you ride you're a skater
I love that guy who's trying to "bring back the mall grab". Super funny
You forgot the mall grab. :). I love the guy who's trying to bring back the mall grab. For real, trucks are great handles.
A sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill, skateboarding is 100% a sport.
Does that make painting a sport? 👀

Does that make line dancing a sport?
Every day Im cruising with earphones on full blast and I focus better that way, my friends do this as well so what the f are u talking about??
Cope, will listen to whatever shit I want.
0:20 Bro what on God's green earth is this?!
6:39 in a way, it is a sport in my opinion because it’s very physically active and it is technically exercising in a way
I'd say skateboarding is a sport.
Yo I’m watching this 17 seconds after you posted it
nice
Lol me 17 hours
5:09 whats the name of the shoes
Am a scooter but I don't know why I still watch skating videos.
Love you all skaters and scooters
I’ve been waiting all day for this!
New skaters should be welcomed if they actually have an interest in the activity and like to skate/want to improve. A certain degree of gatekeeping is necessary for the people who don’t actually respect skating/do it as a trend
your videos are so well put together absolute masterpeices...the skate community wouldnt be the same without you. Keep it up!
A little dramatic.

hey skate box is it accepable to be wearing pads when your parents force you to?
the headphone one I don't understand. at least for me every one has a code. assume there using headphones.
Love ur videos, keep up the good work
thanks dude!
I am an older skaters myself. I can't afford an injury.
when i was younger, in the 90s, i was a core skater, and i can only think of one or two people i skated with who would be considered gatekeepers. Time to dust of the board!
i only put one earbud in for that reason 1:45
6:19 is my local skatepark also called riverwalk or Bradenton skatepark. been going there for a while to skate pretty chill people the environment is a little bad but really good park imo.🤘🤘❤❤

***Opinion*** (sorry for the mistake I speak French)
1:earbuds are ok, as long as it's not too loud (you should be able to hear other people).
6:yes it's a sport because it's in the Olympics, you sweat, you can lose weight, you work with your body and wikipedia says it's a sport (and they never lie😂)
7:you can cross pinch your grind, it's just a way to make them easier and they are not feeble grind.
8: gatekeeping shouldn't be a thing people can see if your a real skater but poser are not skater, they are on another group.
9:just invent a name for the trick if you argue or do it in skate 3 and check the name of it😂
10:pads are a bit too extreme but helmet should not be hated.
Mec t'es bon en anglais tkt
Disagree with the brands being different even if they are from the same factory all these board have differences per what the company wants
From the motorcycle world, ATGATT
All the gear, all the time.
@@thepieisalieofficial pads can be helpful in some case but a lot of skater dont really fall on their knees. Hurting your knees Is not fun, but hurting your head can be wayyy more harmful(☠️)
I will typically wear knee pads and a helmet when trying new things. It give me a safety net and confidence to try new things.
I wear helmet and hand and elbow pads I don't wear knee bc my knee pads are too small because I hit my growth spurt
5:50 In my opinion, it is a sport. It is a physical activity, and a sport does not require a scoring system.
i have always worn headphones while skating, but they are on low volume and they are over the ear old school headphones.
I decided to buy a helmet, because without it I just won't commit to do any tricks.
Ew.
Thats why this video is about a debate on skating
skiing is a sport snowboarding is a sport therefore skateboarding is a sport
I have a friend who always skates with earbuds, but it helps him focus better, but he usually skates by himself.
Don't mind me, just an inline skater passing through
5:50 I think that skateboarding is a sport.
Love your video’s so much❤️
I don't think it matters what you do or what you wear like helmets and designer shoes unless you don't affect other people
When did you start skating.
I started skating during the core era I specifically remember how skaters would judge other skaters by the way they do a 5050 grind lol
0:22 BILL AND TED IFELL OUT OF MY CHAIR OMHG I LOVE BILL AND TED BILL PLEASE TEDD

Every skateboarder is equal in skateboarding. It doesnt matter if its just an hobby to you or if you wear pads/airpods.
Falling off my board sometimes keeps me away from skating for like a week now cause I'm old. Pads help you skate more once you're old man
I grew up being a core, poor, skater and im kinda more on the traditional skater side with some of these tricks some of these tricks just look like "flip your board as hard as you can and just try to land back on it" and some how thats a new trick but cant even name it.
Damn. The layers just keep adding up. I ride goofy 90% of the time, but I only push in switch, so basically regular mongo, I guess? And now you're telling me I lock grinds in backwards on top of all that 😂
Rn im loving skating learned how to ollie over up and off curbs
🤠🤘
I'd say you've been in the game longer than the goons judging people for not playing by their gatekept rules have been alive
What about dudes who are over 6 feet tall trying to grab the nose in a 5-0, it's impossible not to drag the tail!!!
@@ianhale4466 nothing about my analysis changes. It's still a scraped 5-0. Someone's body dimensions supposedly making them incapable of performing the correct actions doesn't just exempt them from rules of what defines a trick
@@justinmusicandskateboardin9282 cool good thing I don't give a shit about rules, like a true skater
I can’t skate with my earbuds in I’m not very good but I have a good ass Ollie I literally can’t do any ollies when I have earbuds in cuz I use the noise from the pop yo know when to lift my back foot and I’m super paranoid so I like to be aware of my surroundings
Helmet and protective gear is important if your learning and your not comfident if you can land a trick or like if your a beginer
"the idea is that sports are physical activities that require a scoring system in order to play them but since skateboarding doesn't require a scoring system it's not actually a sport"
Okay by that logic nothing is a sport you can play basketball and not keep score little kid events do that all the time with the everybody's a winner attitude which I hate but that's a different topic you can play hockey you can play soccer you can play literally anything just for fun nothing requires a scoring system I use to play basketball just shooting hoops and such with friends not caring about scoring at all by that definition nothing is a sport because nothing nessacarily needs a scoring system the only time a scoring system is needed is if you want a winner but if you're just doing it for a winner and not because you just enjoy doing it then you really shouldn't be doing that hobby in the first place
Also yiu have a picture of Nyjah wearing earbuds on the thumbnail. It's a picture from SLS where he's the only one in the park at the moment so he is totally ok to have an earbud in.
8:18 got me dead lmao!
I would say that it depends on how you skate with or without a scoring system which is probably a sport while without I think is not

I see professional skateboarding is a sport, but street skating is an art. I mean, you’re using your surrounding resources to make something of your own. That’s the creativity of skateboarding people are always coming up with new ways to skate.
Agree to disagree :)
@@julianamorales706 🤷 we all have our own opinions I guess
Sliding the tail/nose on 5-0/nose grind should be separate tricks. Neither is wrong but they do function quite differently. It ads a manual when the board is not touching. Where as sliding is just the balance of the grind.
I almost always wear a helmet but sometimes i take it of for flatground. I think Andy Anderson is one of the best skaters rn and his helmet looks cool.
And also pls dont use earbuds while you are sharing the park. But if you are having a solo session you should be able to do whatever you want
