I’m coming back to this video after 5 years to say that I work with DMSO on a daily basis (it’s a very very common organic solvent that gets used in synthetic chemistry labs) and it has a distinct smell that I could not put my finger on until recently, when I realized it smelled both garlicky and somewhat sweet, kinda like fruit. I think the fruity-garlic smell must have been the DMSO.
I work with it often in the lab too. But I never picked on its smell. I never smelled anything from it. I'm a very clumsy person so I try to keep things away from my face 😆
They really nailed it with this series. It is so interesting, but Shane provides just enough comic relief to not totally and completely creep you out. I love this.
Hospital worker here. I believe the reason they moved everyone out out of the hospital instead of the woman was because the area where she was being held would be considered contaminated. Since most likely she wasn’t placed in isolation immediately the area would also be considered contaminated (especially since it was an unknown, contagious contaminant) the outside would be a better environment than a contaminated unit.
The “fruity garlic smell” could be the result of a fruity smelling breath combined with her just eating food with garlic in it. A fruity smelling breath is a symptom of for example liver failure, Diabetic Ketoacidosis or Hhs. And garlic can smell days after you eat it.
SabakuNoSimone i was thinking an excess amount of dimethyl sulfide in the blood. there has been cases when DMSO rises to levels so potent that the doctors become sick even exposed. that would also explain the small white particles in the blood
Sage Parsley there was a case in the middle ages which made whole towns dance until their limbs fell off, it turned out it was a disease that caused spasms and limb loss so maybe they are related I've never heard of the French case though.
Hi, hello, I'm 99.9% sure I know what happened and I just realized I've never commented on that here. So DMSO is super easily absorbed by the skin, and because it will solubilize pretty much any compound, anything mixed in with the DMSO when it comes in contact with skin will be absorbed too. So that ED almost certainly had some major contamination issues going on (because hospitals are run by money-hungry sociopaths and not by people interested in patients' wellbeing) and though it wasn't causing any health issues before Gloria came in, once she was being treated, all that excess DMSO on her got all over the people who were treating her, and it carried whatever contaminants were hanging around into their skin with it. That's why the paramedics didn't get sick, since the ambulance would have been relatively clean. Gloria may have simply died from cancer-related complications, but all of that DMSO made the hospital's sterility issues very hazardous, very quickly. Even if the hospital didn't know what happened, they almost certainly would have interfered with the investigation because they knew it could have exposed the issues. Anyway, it wasn't aliens or mass hysteria, it was science and capitalism.
The fruity smell also reminded me of the smell that comes from ketoacidosis, which can also cause kidney failure which she died of, but I haven't found any mention of her being diabetic, so it's not extremely likely I suppose
As one other commenter noted, pure smells alone aren't enough to cause the crazy amounts of symptoms, but toxic chemicals are. Maybe she didn't have a mystery illness, but was poisoned by something toxic instead.

I was 9 years old when this happened abs lived in Riverside. It captivated the entire town and country pretty much. General Hospital had a horrible reputation even before this, afterwards people were afraid to go back at all.
Update: this cause was somewhat solved! The most probable theory is that she used an old school remedy of DMSO which is oven cleaner over her body thinking it would help her cancer. It matches all the symptoms that the nurses in the hospital had experienced. R.I.P Gloria
@@easy_eight2810there were commercials around this time promoting it as an alternative remedy for cancer and people who believed this too. She was desperate, a mother with a family and of course did whatever gave her, in her mind, any kind of chance of beating cancer or prolonging her life. It’s a very sad case
@@mithilbhoras9177 Dr. Grant published a paper in the National Library of Medicine going in depth and investigating the case. The paper is called "A possible chemical explanation for the events associated with the death of Gloria Ramirez at Riverside General Hospital" if you want to check it yourself.
When cancer patients are given chemo they often lose their appetite and won't eat. This sends their body into ketosis. The mix of chemo and ketosis is toxic, and the body releases a very strong chemical smell, that is sort of a sweet, acetone type smell. It is extremely intense and seeps through the pores and is on the breath. I can see as it might be described as fruity garlic. I don't know if this is what they smelled, but it is fairly common and any medical professional should recognize this. It can definitely turn one's stomach, so I can understand becoming ill from the odor. Perhaps that's what happened and then mass hysteria ensued?
@@brianwiggins2169 Sure, I'll see what I can find. I was told this by a doctor when my mother was having this issue after her chemo. She got very sick and weak and couldn't even walk and the smell that was coming off of her was terrifying because it was so strong and unnatural. Give me a few days, but I will try and find some info.
That's always been my theory too. That, or perhaps Gloria was taking some dodgy last ditch attempt "miracle cure" that smelled weird and had an oily sheen. The smell alone could have been the catalyst to the mass hysteria. I think a lot of people underestimate how easy it is to suffer from some sort of mass hysteria, it actually occurs a lot more often in every day life than most people realise, but obviously on a much smaller scale. The mind is a funny thing, its why placebos work so very well.
Yeah, I will not be surprised if the smell caused mass hysteria. As @Loulabelle said, mass hysteria is actually quite common, so I'm not surprised at all.
There's a theory out there that someone in the hospital was smuggling meth precursor chemicals through the hospital in IV bags, and that Ramirez got one of the meth precursor bags instead of the intended one. It would explain the ammonia smell (apparently meth precursors are known to smell like ammonia, which is weird,) the "misplacement" of the syringe, etc. If someone at the hospital had been using the hospital IV bags to smuggle precursor chemicals, the hospital could have been severely penalized or even permanently shut down over it, even without someone dying from that. Every medical professional at that hospital would be at risk of losing their licenses, down to the last nurse in the pediatrics ward, effectively ending the careers of every last one of them. There would be a MASSIVE pressure to get rid of the evidence, to misplace a syringe, etc. This would also explain why there was such pressure on the chief investigator, and why she committed suicide. If she discovered that the scheme was backed by someone powerful, and they were pressuring her to state that nothing was wrong, that would result in pressure from two sides. First, there would be the general pressure to cover up what happened, but there would also be an internal pain and frustration that the system she trusted was hiding so much. I don't know if this theory is accurate, but with the astounding levels of corruption and drug mismanagement that led to the current opioid crisis, is it really a stretch to believe that this might be the real reason for Ramirez's death?
That's the theory I've always heard about it and I was surprised when Ryan didn't mention it. I know that The Dollop did a podcast episode about it a few years ago where they go much more in depth in it that was pretty interesting to listen to.
Interesting theory but I must say I don't think the discovery of 1 or a group of staff members smuggling meth precursor would lead to an entire hospital of health professionals being struck off, just doesn't make sense to me
Laura Stimpson The hilariously described fruity garlic smell emanating from her instantly made me think she had diabetic ketoacidosis and that it was her breath. High levels of ketones can cause very bad breath that’s been described as fruity in some cases. If detected and treated too late, it can be fatal as well. As for the other staff members experiencing a wide array of symptoms, it’s not completely improbable that one of the nurses was actually sick with an unrelated illness and that that, combined with the unknown factor of Gloria’s death, caused the mass hysteria.
@@JLin943 I agree that DKA is the likely cause of the smell, but the particles in her blood wouldn't be caused by DKA, barring some REALLY weird complications (like her blood being oil-based instead of water-based type weird.) That suggests to me that there's something else going on in addition to the likely DKA. (Assuming Gloria had DM in the first place, which is likely but not certain.)
Obviously the true procedure would have been done with gloves to avoid spreading whatever they believed was around. All the confiscated clothes would have been put together and into an isolated room
I feel like it would be pretty easy in a lab to set up a test to effectively prove or disprove the dimethyl sulfate theory. I mean how hard can it be to attempt to synthesize dimethyl sulfate from some DMSO gel, oxygen, bodily sulfate, and an electric defibrillator. The simulation wouldn't even be particularly expensive

Mass hysteria is probable. I remembered back in highschool, we were having our flag ceremony when suddenly one of my classmates fainted since she gets easily light-headed in crowded areas; it was also really hot at the time. Afterwards, some students started collapsing, feeling nauseous and headaches. Even after the flag ceremony, students from different floors and different classrooms we're being rushed to the clinic (which was already full of other students) since they also started collapsing. I was actually one of those who collapsed and got sent to the clinic. I remembered suddenly blacking out and I woke up laying in the clinic's bed. I couldn't move any of my limbs nor could i open my mouth. All I could do was move my eyes. I was sorta temporarily paralyzed. It still creeps me out up until now.
Yeah I've had this happen before where 3 people passed out during a choir performance. I almost passed out and it really is scary because it doesn't feel psychological. I think that hysteria could have played a role in this case, But could that explain the first lady's avascular necrosis? I mean I don't think that would happen as a result of mass hysteria...
Sorry you you experienced that. I can see why it would still creep you out. But I have to admit that's a really cool story none the less. It sounds like something you'd see in a movie :)
Wait did the mass hysteria theorists write off the necrosis? A woman's muscles were spontaneously dying, temporarily crippling her, and they're assuming it was all in their heads?!?!
Doctors write off women's symptoms of things as psychosomatic all the time, unfortunately. I'm not too terribly surprised that they looked at them, and went "Hmmmmm.... Yep! Nothing wrong here, it's all in your head. Have a nice day, that'll be eight hundred dollars."
As one comment earlier said somewhere , it's possible that she already had it but wssnt diagnosed until after they tested her for the supposed psychogenic symptoms showed up of mass hysteria. Its weird they didnt mention it at all though. But its possible she already had the disease
"All in her head" isn't necessarily degrading or playing down the situation, especially as she got treatment for it. Psychosomatics are powerful and can play a role in physical health, normally to a much minor degree. although i agree there is an incredibly small chance of psychosomatic stress in mass hysteria causing such an illness, unless of course she had this illness, that then got exacerbated by the stress she endured at the hospital that night
@@emilybarker6405 You're saying one one hour of stress can majorly exacerbate an illness? You all will come up with anything to make sense of what you believe to be true.

I would like to point out that a symptom of arsenic poisoning is garlic breath and that long-term exposure to nonlethal levels of arsenic can cause certain cancers.
I think either she was taking some alternative medicine treatments for her cancer or she was being slowly poisoned by her husband which attributed to her cancer and death. There’s a lot of toxins that aren’t detected because they have to know what they are looking for.
organophosphate poisoning is supposed to give off a garlic smell and could cause the symptoms the staff experienced and maybe gloria's (i dont know exactly why she was brought in). i dont know if it hard to trace after death or if it was hard to trace back in the 90s. fruity smell is for cirrhosis. ketoacidosis smells like acetone more than anything (sometimes compared to the smell of rotten apples)
The event has been the main strange occurrence in history that's been on my mind constantly. My theory is that When one person says they see something and try to sell it hard enough another will say yeah I see it and more people will be convinced that something is there. Same concept.
I couldn't find the source for this (was a documentary I saw a while back). But if you're talking about people dancing for days until they died during ~11-18 century it most likely had to do with ergot. Ergot is a mushroom that infects and grows on wheat, and ergot is basically a raw version of LSD. So when the villagers baked bread of the infected wheat they went batshit crazy, tripping out for several days and dying of exhaustion

hm. i work in a university chem lab and we use DMSO as a solvent. we always have to be super, super careful with DMSO because if you get it on your skin, it will act as a solvent and allow pretty much anything to enter your skin and bloodstream _extremely_ fast. i'm not sure if ramierez had access to lab-grade DMSO, but if she'd applied enough and then come into contact with any sort of toxin (think even like, cleaners or environmental toxins). I sent this case and the actual 1997 paper by grant et al to my PI, and he simply suspected that a combination of lidocaine and acetaminophen caused her heart to stop, although this wouldn't explain the apparent other effects suffered by the nursing staff. just my two cents!

Fruity breath is something nurse are taught to keep an eye out for upon examination (it can can mean super high levels of blood sugar). Nurses know a lot more than ppl give them credit for! (I'm only 4 years behind with my comment lol)
MrDavidKen77 It could be toxic blood, which can cause a series of symptoms, it’s very rare and the cause isn’t defined, but what the nurses and attendings symptoms match exposure to toxins.
Theory 1: the staff experienced mass hysteria Theory 2: there was poisonous compounds found on the body Theory 3: the hospital's poor conditions knocked out the emergency staff and the hospital covered it up so they don't get a bad reputation Theory 4: A L I E N S
Shane: A bunch of people in France danced til they died Ryan: No they didn't Shane: Yep look it up. One of the things I love about rewatching these episodes is noticing when Shane puts on a voice and realizing he used that voice for a puppet years later. Like when he said "Maybe aliens, though" at 13:48, it's the voice of Clipped Coin.
There's also the possibility that if they moved her outside, and whatever it was WAS airborne, it could have affected people outside of the hospital, just in the streets or even driving by.
When her body was dug up again because her husband wanted an independent autopsy she was missing her heart. Although that can be due to the body decomposing it's a major part of the investigation they left out
There's a very interesting theory about an illegal drug lab being run at this hospital, and Gloria bring injected accidentally with chemicals from the lab.
Alright, I might be a lil late but here's a explanation as to why they took the patients out of the hospital instead of just Ramirez. They didn't know what she had and by what you guys presented, it could have a been a contagious disease such Ebola, that by contact you get it. Or Tuberculosis, that is bacteria that travels in the air, and just by breathing you contract it. They didn't know what they were dealing with, and if she did had an illness that spread by air, by bringing her outside, she could spread it around the parking lot, and other area making it a epidemic. Like I said, a lil late *insert syndrome voice* 3 years too late. But I learned this a few months ago and maybe ya'll wanted an answer.
Hospital Quarantine And my theory is that it was a chemical attack and she was the carrier of whatever "terrorists"(ig) put on her. The 2 ambulance ppl could have been the ones to administer it on her and dropped her off. But to cover their tracks and not be suspicious they chose a hospital with an already bad reputation to see if their bio weapon works or not to hold on to it and use it somewhere else more populated but its my solo over the top theory.
@Mystic330 This is what I thought as well when watching the video. Especially if a large portion of the hospital staff wasn’t feeling well at rapid rates, the best move was to try to contain the situation as best as they could, by keeping her inside.
I just learned emergency/disaster medicine in school and I immediately thought that this sounds like a bioterrorism exposure, but theory #2 could also be plausible. Was she driven in ambulance or did she drive herself to the hospital? I must have missed that part. But anyways, it couldn't be TB because to contract it you need to be in close proximity to someone with it for a long period of time (everyday).
Okay so story time. Let me start out by saying that DSMO is sometimes used for people with bladder issues or other issues pertaining to the female reproductive system. It’s like a mild inflammatory depressant. With that said, a few months ago I went into my urologist and had a procedure done where they injected DMSO into my hoohoo. I was fine until about 5 minutes later. I started not being able to breathe or see straight. I went back to my doctor and by the time I reached them, I was confused, could barely speak and I was so cold and shivering so hard that the nurses and doctors thought I was having convulsions. I got sent to the hospital and at some point I noticed that everything smelt like garlic. I told the nurse and she called the doctor back and said she noticed it too. A few minutes later, she had to leave the room complaining she couldn’t take the smell. They gave me Benadryl (which I take all the time because I have a lot of allergies) and I started going into anaphylactic shock which is obviously insane because like I said, I take it all the time! The doctor and nurses were super confused. They gave me epinephrine and I ended up being okay, but watching this video, it reminded me so much of that experience. And let me point out that DSMO is literally just bicarbonate, which is baking soda and water! I work with bicarbonate at my job because I work in healthcare and anytime I get it on my skin, I feel like I’m on fire. There is no reason that anyone should have an allergic reaction to it because it basic everyday ingredients. Plus a chemical or two that are also 100% harmless. Just thought I’d share that story.
also you can definitely have an allergic reaction to just about anything.... so yes two basic ingredients could absolutely cause an allergic reaction some people are even allergic to benadryl. That's just unfortunately how bodies work.

According to another commenter, DMSO used to be seen as a "remedy" for cancer, so maybe Gloria covered herself in it and that caused the reaction.

Thank you for the answer I was wondering about it
Plus, at the time, they didn't necessarily know WHY everyone was getting sick. In the moment, some people thought it was a gas leak or something.
The “fruity garlic smell” could be the result of a fruity smelling breath combined with her just eating food with garlic in it.
A fruity smelling breath is a symptom of for example liver failure, Diabetic Ketoacidosis or Hhs. And garlic can smell days after you eat it.

Yup, and DMSO smells both fruity and garlicky.
i guess you could say we have concrete evidence that "capitalism kills"
The fruity smell also reminded me of the smell that comes from ketoacidosis, which can also cause kidney failure which she died of, but I haven't found any mention of her being diabetic, so it's not extremely likely I suppose

Amy Evans I know this was posted a while ago but can I get a link or a source on this cause i really would like to read up on this
@@brianwiggins2169 Sure, I'll see what I can find. I was told this by a doctor when my mother was having this issue after her chemo. She got very sick and weak and couldn't even walk and the smell that was coming off of her was terrifying because it was so strong and unnatural. Give me a few days, but I will try and find some info.
Interesting., it could be possible.

Imagine how terrifying that is. You go to the hospital for help and everyone who touches/comes by you faints/get sick.
That part where Shane is saying that with each theory the evidence is more and more damning and immediately after Ryan goes into aliens: gold
Laura Stimpson just some high asf doctor blaming it on her and she ain’t even real person or some shit
3:27, "Their clothes were removed and put in bags out of fear of a toxic chemical"
*uses a shot of BAREHANDED people shoving clothes into a bag*
Well they were already contaminated I guess?
Obviously the true procedure would have been done with gloves to avoid spreading whatever they believed was around. All the confiscated clothes would have been put together and into an isolated room

Maybe the person who was putting the clothes in the bag was the person it belonged to and they undressed themselves lol idk
It was stock footage ya'll. lol
The simulation wouldn't even be particularly expensive
yeah and that theory seemed the most plausible, weird how "scientists" dismissed it- is it published anywhere why they thought it was impossible?
seriously. and @Rebecca they said it was impossible inside the body. but arman is suggesting to prove it outside

Wow really ? So did you have any virus in you or did the doctors agree that it was just mass hysteria and you were completely fine ?
Alright Yes it’s true I was the paralysis I was there
Yeah I've had this happen before where 3 people passed out during a choir performance.
Think Salem Witch Trials..
I love how you can hear Shane in the background saying “what and ohh”
*wheeze*
Psychosomatics are powerful and can play a role in physical health, normally to a much minor degree. although i agree there is an incredibly small chance of psychosomatic stress in mass hysteria causing such an illness, unless of course she had this illness, that then got exacerbated by the stress she endured at the hospital that night

organophosphate poisoning is supposed to give off a garlic smell and could cause the symptoms the staff experienced and maybe gloria's (i dont know exactly why she was brought in). i dont know if it hard to trace after death or if it was hard to trace back in the 90s. fruity smell is for cirrhosis. ketoacidosis smells like acetone more than anything (sometimes compared to the smell of rotten apples)

Kleo ness I think it was actually German, unless there was another one that I haven't heard of. Very interesting, and sad.
Kleo ness like the Salem witch trials
I couldn't find the source for this (was a documentary I saw a while back). But if you're talking about people dancing for days until they died during ~11-18 century it most likely had to do with ergot. Ergot is a mushroom that infects and grows on wheat, and ergot is basically a raw version of LSD. So when the villagers baked bread of the infected wheat they went batshit crazy, tripping out for several days and dying of exhaustion

I read this as they said it lol
One of the things I love about rewatching these episodes is noticing when Shane puts on a voice and realizing he used that voice for a puppet years later. Like when he said "Maybe aliens, though" at 13:48, it's the voice of Clipped Coin.
it's not BuzzFeed Unsolved without (wheeze) 😂😂

BEST BUZZFEED SERIES
Jayne Mapstone burzfed*
Jayne Mapstone yep i agree
Jayne Mapstone probably the only good one, buzzfeed is basically dead
Jayne Mapstone I agree I love it
Jayne Mapstone I agree
The cover-up would explain why the staff moved everybody outside. If they knew the problem was not Ramirez but the hospital itself, it makes sense
I also find it hard to believe that mass hysteria could cause necrosis
valerie poulin your so right.
But if they brought her outside, they wouldn't have the equipment necessary to try to save her life.
aewtx if they moved other patients outside too, they should've bring the equipment for the patients too which is kinda tricky or some sort of.
Hmmm your unto something
Why would her face be burning though
@@ghosttoast8610 maybe she was getting plowed in the bathroom by another doctor and he came on her face (just a theory)
@@ayubali2431 bruh
@꧁ Delilah ꧂ yeah I misinterpreted what the video said,I thought they were talking about Gloria’s face literally burning
I really love how every once in a while, they crack some jokes...

Shane and Ryan’s humor is what allows me to watch these and fall asleep soundly at night 🤣 like it’s creepy but in a fun way
Alright, I might be a lil late but here's a explanation as to why they took the patients out of the hospital instead of just Ramirez.
Hospital Quarantine
And my theory is that it was a chemical attack and she was the carrier of whatever "terrorists"(ig) put on her.
Maybe an earlier or a similar thing to Ebola
It also makes more sense to keep her inside... where all the medical equipment is???

DMSO stands for dimethylsulfoxide I thought, not sodium bicarbonate...also since baking soda is basic, too much can definitely irritate your skin.
also you can definitely have an allergic reaction to just about anything.... so yes two basic ingredients could absolutely cause an allergic reaction some people are even allergic to benadryl. That's just unfortunately how bodies work.
Props to you for writing this 👏👏👏
Im allergic to penicillin
So what do you say, from your experience! Which theory is more plausible?
"Fruity garlic" really sums up how horrible this situation must've been.
It is truly just a metaphor for life
Wendigoon just made an incredible video on this about the use of DMSO and a great explanation of it all.
