I’m with Shane on the spontaneous doesn’t equal instantaneous thing. After (unfortunately) having taken organic chemistry, I know that reactions happening spontaneously can happen spontaneously but over a VERY long time. Spontaneous just means it is “favorable” or doesn’t really need any extra energy or push for it to happen.

@@ItsMe-ic7on Not sure if they mentioned it here but I've read about this case and it was established that she was a smoker
@@bdh70 okay thank you.
Okay no lie, I actually am surprised they discounted the “ball of fire” theory because of the existence of ball lightning. Obviously we’d need a lot more information such as the weather, the charge in the room, etc but given that ball lightning is basically a ball of roaming plasma looking to discharge, and little is known about the damage it can cause to someone if struck by it, I think it’s a theory that at the very least can’t be ruled out.
Wow
I was coming to the comments to say this exact thing! They were like “nothing in the room was touched and a guy said he saw a fireball” I was like oh it’s ball lightning then😅
they said at the beginning that they ruled out electrical failure or lightening
i was looking for this comment. Thank you :D
I searched ball lightning up, it says on Wiki that it leaves an odor of Sulphur. However, in this particular case, there was no detection of any smell or odour from the room where she was burnt. So, in the end this theory might not be the case.

The idea of a human bursting into flames is preposterous. Yes, fat is combustible, but only at high temperatures and in oxygen rich environments ie. not fat deposits. And methane? you can't light your own farts on fire let alone burst into flames because of methane.

I believe that the perfect representation of this show is the last part where Ryan closes his case file that contains INTENSE research and then there’s Shane with his little flip book of the woman exploding.
Just a random theory, but there could be a totally plausible explanation for the way poor Ms. Reeser died- while modern furniture had safety requirements, any older chairs/couches in those days often used an incredibly dangerous type of foam (see the 'Woolworth's fire' of 1979 for further example) that wasn't just flammable, but also released toxic fumes as it burned. Perhaps only part of her chair used these materials, or maybe the lab didn't want to acknowledge the culpable source- who knows? But it's possible that she took the pills, and a fire started somehow (whether due to her cigarette, or something else) and she was incapable of responding to it in her incapacitated state. Given her age, it's possible that she was pre- or already an (undiagnosed) diabetic and her one foot had limited blood flow or some other medical restriction leading to that limb not being as easily burned. Tragic, but hopefully she wasn't conscious for any of this...
You've heard of Soot And A Foot now get ready for: Fat In A Mat™

Then i saw the ambulances
Well that was a deadly cookout
I *Was* having a cookout, until the damn first responders showed up.

Hmm
After our house burned down, i couldn't cook with liquid smoke for years.
I was just watching something about post-war chairs and clothing that were made of a certain material and caught fire very quickly. They actually mentioned someone who fell asleep with a cigarette and ended up catching themselves and their entire couch on fire. Also, a woman was making tea standing next to her stove, and her nightdress caught fire burning her alive. I instantly thought of this case.

count your blessings i’m currently spontaneously combusting and it’s so annoying
I'd like to add that she did take sedatives that are used before surgery, so there might be the slight possibility that she did just sit there and let it happen
Yes! I was wondering why no one had brought that up.
Dylan Shutts exactly she could have passed out while smoking a cigarette. Then her clothes caught on fire and she was done for
Oh. :0
Yeah my thought too. and back in the day they used to associate alcoholism with spontaneous combustion (read Bleak House for an example haha). So often two factors that seem to be associated with "spontaneous combustion" are drinking and smoking. Light yourself on fire because of the smoking while too drunk or sedated to be responsible, and then don't react because you're passed-out drunk or drugged. Wick effect is a bit more complicated than described in this ep also, and even explains the fat in the rug and the fact that feet are often left behind.
My mom used to take barbiturates (the same class of sedatives she took in this case) and if she took too many she would nod off and fall asleep sometimes with a cigarette in her hand but I would watch her all the time and put it out if she dropped it. So this theory is extremely plausible to me. She said she took 4 total.

You sir, are truly a prince lol I love it

What if what they saw was her combusting and was the oddest option because combustion is such a unique process that doesn’t happen to humans often lol
Fun Fact: All human cells contain mitochondria, symbiotic organelles with their own distinctive DNA which humans rely on to turn the foods and such we eat into the chemical energy that actually feeds us. This conversion process can flash as hot as 5000°F. Normally this isn't an issue, but combine this with health issues that affect the body's ability to product/absorb glucose (diabetes), alcohol or medicine intake that can further affect this absorption/chemical conversion process...maybe?
Fun Fact 2: Human skull shrinkage is a thing. Skulls naturally shrink with age, but not to "cuphead" sizes as in this case. However, various cultures such as the Jivaro Indians from Northern Peru and Southern Ecuador actually "shrunk heads". Without going into the gory details because it's pretty gross, the shrinking of the skull is caused by boiling the heads for a certain (don't know) amount of time to 1/3 the normal size, then shrunk further by inserting hot rocks & sand inside to shrink & "tan" it from the inside.
If nothing else, this suggests that her _brain boiled as the rest of her body flash-burned._
I mean, she did take those pills before falling asleep so idk
This is really impressive research I think you convinced me!
the weirdest fact to me, is that the flames were enough to heat the door knob yet damage so little in the apartment. 3000 degrees is like double that of a campfire and enough to melt steel. If she exploded more instant and violently, wouldn't more of her cover the room? it just sounds like she got vaporized by a brotherhood of steel paladin.

This is most certainly the wick effect. There are so many similar stories from the 1800s of people being found burned to ash in their otherwise untouched bedrooms, back when having an open flame in your bed wasn't weird. A lot of those were also attributed to spontaneous human combustion at the time.
This always makes me think of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode, Once More with Feeling. Where a demon curses people to sing and dance until they spontaneously combust. A lot of the symptoms and results of spontaneous combustion are actually accurately portrayed in the episode. Also who doesn’t love a musical episode?

Could happen to any of us...
Bubblesnop Emporium nope

I was born and raised in St. Petersburg where this took place. Always grew up hearing different stories.
gives me a series of unfortunate events vibe with the whole unexplainable fire

Ana but buzzfeed hasn't made one so yeah
I literally just finished a forensic anthropology final exam like an hour ago and I can tell you that bone shrinks when it is heated! If her skin on her head wasn't there anymore, the fire against her skull could have shrunk it.
“That sounds like a country bumpkin if I’ve ever heard one”
Me, the blueprint for country bumpkins: yep
imagine just sitting down then you just ✨explode✨

Your local No homo pass I mean they do... So.

Let's just take a moment to appreciate what a creepy yet satisfying smile the cremation expert had at 3:24
When looking at the topic of how she did not react to being set ablaze, one must remember that prior to her falling asleep, she was given many sedatives. Which may have caused the combustion firstly, rendering her unable to react. Or left her too far under to react to any combustion.
"Her skull was shrunk to the size of a cup" yet another example of Americans using anything but the metric system
You know i think they said that to give visual perspective 🤔

No.
You win the award for best comment XD
This is one of my fav cases of these series
This case is so bizarre wtf i cant believe it really happened
Just for the record, I am a cremation expert and average bodies only need to burn at about 1700゚for 2.5 hours. That other guy is trippin
He just wanted the bodies to be extra ashy
@Anonymous not necessarily, crematory operators do have to be licensed in some states. I'm an expert in most things death and dying, as a whole.
I going to assume you think she just dropped a cig on herself and burned? Because spontaneous human combustion sounds ludicrous
why are your zeros different sizes
do you think she just accidentally fell asleep and dropped the cig on herself?
when you watch buzzfeed unsolved before bed and you know you fucked yourself up
inchy worm I ALWAYS DO THAT
And I never learn my fucking lesson
Jeezus C. sAME
inchy worm I am currently in the process of doing this... 😧 oh well....
Me too right now it's 12:46 am
Here's my own suggestion, and a disclaimer, I'm not a fire expert. When this incident happened, on average it took 17 minutes for a residential fire in a room to reach flashover (when everything in a room simultaneously ignites). This was mainly based on what the furnishings were made of. Back then, most of the furniture was made of natural materials, such as cotton and real wood, unlike today where furniture is made with accelerants (which causes flashover in 2 - 3 minutes). While I have no explanation for how most of her body was gone, I think it's possible that the fire burned itself out before flashover could occur. There are still many unanswered questions, but I figured I'd throw this out there.
Ryan: the theory is that she died from spontaneous human combustion.
*Fire force season 1 intro starts playing in my head*
Ryan: what if it's aliens
Shane: wHat If It'S AliEnS
Jackie house This made me laugh out loud because it's so accurate 😂

Isnt it always aliens!

Honestly Shane‘s comments throughout every episode are the only thing keeping me from being scared shitless
I'm still scared, but it does help, it stops me from crying.

yes but you're telling me that my body can literally just set itself on fire?
and here I thought "you're hot" was just an expression
You're hot = You're spontaneously combustible
A burning body is one of the worst smells there are. My stepdad is retired Military and said that the smell is horrific and there is nothing like it.
For those who don’t know these two started their own channel called Watcher. Their shenanigans continue , go support!!!!

acetone is also in cigarettes so it's possible that since she was a smoker she had higher levels of acetone
true
Kathy P but wouldnt sense say if the fire started slowly by a cigarette. she should of felt that fast if not immediately
They dont mean that she was lit by the cigarette. They mean that within her body she would have had higher levels of acetone because she smoked
Kathy P ARMYYY
