after nine months of decay, that pope's corpse would be well into the dry/skeletal phase of decomposition. so while this was an awful, gross thing they did, at least they didn't have a bloated, rotting corpse up there, it was just a skeleton dude with robes and a hat on which is kind of a funny scene to picture

This is pretty common if you come from a Buddhist family. 17 is still kinda old to be in training
If I recall my tour guide in Chiang Mai correctly, in Thailand teenage boys will spend some time as monks. It's like Rumspringe in reverse; you take a break from normal life to be a monk, and stay in the monastery if you like it better.
