Fun fact, most historians now think the guy who ruled after Cambyses was the real Smerdis, and the whole imposter story was made up by Darius to justify killing him claiming the throne.

Another Fun Fact: Gomata the Magus was both the King of Saka and the Great Priest of the Achaemenids who took over following Badriyas death due to the chaos which ensued. Darius was one who was taking advantage for his own ambitions. 19 Kings supported Gomata. Darius would eventually succeeded in sacking Gomata, the political reason being that Gomata was for decentralization while Darius was for Centralization. Instead of killing Gomata however, Darius told a Nobel Lie saying he did and exiled Gomata to India. There Gomata was translated to Gautama, and was referred to as Siddhartha Gautama meaning Gautama from the land of sages. Yes, this is the same Gautama who became Buddha, he was the King of Saka and the Shah of Shahs, which is why he was able to claim kingship over Lanka where the Deva peoples resides. The story of Buddha’s childhood is in reference to Parthamasiris, the heir to the Throne of the Parthian Empire. Upon his fathers death he handed the throne over to his uncle and became a monk under the name Shigao. He was pivatol in spreading Buddhism in China where it was already known, and translating Buddhist works into Chinese. Gautama became Kowtam in western China and then Lou Tam in eastern China where he was referred to by the title Lou Tzu. His Dharma became Darwa in western China became Dao in eastern China. The Dao/Taoist teachings are the most advanced Buddhist teachings conveyed by Gomata/Gautama in his oldest age.

Honestly this whole thing sounds a little suspicious. I wonder if Darius wanted to usurp the throne, and needed a theory to make his claim valid. So he made up this whole "imposter king" story to garner widespread support for the assault on the palace. The Magi genocide afterward just makes him look like a Magi hater, and that he didn't like that a Magi held power at the top.
Its a perfect plan.
1) Come up with a theory that Smerdis's rule wasn't rightful. (i.e he wasn't really Smerdis)
2) Use this theory to get the other nobleman to support the cause. I'm guessing Smerdis's was pretty terrible, so perhaps didn't need a lot of convincing.
3) Coax a close associate of the former king to confirm the theory out loud.
4) Storm palace without a fight and slay Smerdis and his Magi buddy.
5) The theory of the imposter Smerdis is explained to the people to prevent a crisis and to prevent any claim of a wrongful revolt by Darius and the noblemen.
Super easy, barely an inconvenience.
Yap. We know today that Darius was the actual imposter.
This entire story was the "official" story Darius wrote on monuments to legitimatimize his rule.
Bardiya (a.k.a Smerdis) was not fake...he was the real son of Cyrus the Great.
Darius was some random dude who claimed to be a long lost relative, descended from Cyrus the Great's brother. We know today that his real mother was a wealthy Elamite (so Darius was probably not even a Persian).
The Magi tribe had a lot of power due to the Zoroastrian priests coming from that tribe, and they kind of challenged the power of the throne...Darius used them as scape goats, and killed multiple birds with one stone.
The Magi scattered all over the known world to escape persecution and now we have words like Magic and Magician in the English language.
After this, Darius made a habit of accusing political enemies of being imposters. And he went out of his way to portray himself as the opposite of an imposter...overdoing it a bit.
Ironically, this imposter turned out to be a very successful king. He completely restructured Cyrus' empire and turned it into the Persian Empire...and increased it to its greatest size.
Also, Cambyses wasnt as evil as portrayed by Darius...which is another red flag.
