My ancestors came from this area; your song encapsulates the essence of this life and part of Kentucky. Thank you for your contribution to this rich history. Dave in Cleveland
I find this version so engaging--the band and the Ms. Mattea each draw me in, each sell the song until I'm there. This, from someone whose bloodlines are in Letcher County, just next to Harlan County... tough country, tough folks. And a place filled with beauty! (Punctuated by grace, much like this song...) Roy
My family is from harland kentucky love this song...lost my grandfather in a cave in left my grandmother with 13 children and no place to live because she said that mine took enough of her family none of her boys could go so thay made her leave the camp
Kathy Mattea, you’ve been a favorite and an enormous inspiration to me since I discovered you a long time. I like the way you don’t oversell the tragedy of this song. It’s already so dramatic and tragic I can hardly listen to certain people’s overwrought renditions. Yours reminds me of the way Merle Travis sang Dark as a Dungeon. No bitterness. Just facts PS Battle Hymn of Love has kept my marriage intact for 22 years. Let’s keep hoping :-)
Patty Loveless's version is also very beautifull. Sadder, mournfull and touches that deepest part of your soul. Be sure to have a box of tissues ready if you listen to hers. "Patty Loveless at Merlfest"
You are right Marc ! Patty is #1 at singing this song . She put on a performance singing it at Merlfest . Kathy does a great job as well . Also Charli Robertson from Flatt Lonesome really belts it out too
CBin, Nothing at all wrong with preferring the artist that wrote the song ,it's their choice not yours & it's not being different just to be different. Lots of of fine versions but it is Darrell's song & his delivery is as good as anyone including Patty & Kathy. Mind you they do the song justice & Darrell has no problem with that.
Kathy and Patty have that something extra in this song. Beautiful, ladies.
Ten Fo i agree
I love this song and the lassie who singing it God bless America and all who live there lol Paul p Birmingham England x

Patty Loveless not Lovelace!

Kathy Mattea and Patty Loveless are both grand daughters of coal miners. I can only dream about how great a duet between them would be. WOW!!!
Both of them great ladies. I agree
Kath Mattea is one of my favorite singers!! I love this!
Classy Lady. Love her voice. And pretty too
A true American heartthrob, a contributor to American culture.

Marc Peron Also Kappa Larson's version is great. She has the best voice of the three.

nice version, special kudos to both mandolin and guitar players.
basically all 4 of them
wow what a song so many singers I like them all...listen to kappa Danielson and crew
Such a great voice. After her ride in Nashville she went back to her roots and has become an even better artist.
Love the song and the echo adds a neat element to the song.
She sounds really good
wonderful
Love this song lol Paul p Birmingham England x x ❤😃😁👍🇺🇸❤🇬🇧
PERFECT
how 1 dislike this is fantastic
Well done.
Just about good as it gets....
north carolina love for ky
I'm at the wrong side of the ocean, and I will never reach Harlan alive. :(
Her voice reminds me of Anne Murray
Dave Alvin is my favorite
There's always someone who has to be different just to be different! I"ll bet that secretly, they love it.

Such a wonderful video. Somebody tidy up the synchronisation PLEASE
Very nice, but the best version is still by the author, the one and only Darrell Scott.
Right On; from a real Harlan & Hazard hillbilly coal mining family, relocated to Dayton Ohio ;-)
Hillbilly's for Trump....................
A good frie d of mine was born in Hazzard county, left as a child, became a mining engineernow a petroleum engineer in the Wyoming oilpatch.
Sounds like nickel creek
if this wasn't used in the show Justified, someone seriously needs to be fired!!!!
It was used over and over again in Justified...
Patty’s version was used.
Worst version of this song I've ever heard!
