LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - People are still talking about Tuesday night’s sold out Kentucky Rising concert. The show was headlined by Johnson County native Chris Stapleton and featured fellow eastern Kentuckians Dwight Yoakam and Tyler Childers. It was organized by Stapleton after the July floods. Eastern Kentucky artists Ricky Skaggs and Patty Loveless made surprise appearances. “Thanks for coming out tonight for a good cause, help some folks out that need some help,” Stapleton told the crowd of more than 13,000. “That’s what we do here in Kentucky. It’s a wonderful feeling, people doing good things for good reasons.” (source: www.wkyt.com/2022/10/13/it-was-just-emotional-kentucky-rising-raises-more-than-25-million-flood-relief/)
God blessPatty Loveless! The coal miners she sings about were real people who were little more than indentured servants, They worked in the mines, lived in mine company owned housing, and were paid in script that was only redeemable at the company store. My grandfather was a coal miner in West Virginia. He told me about lying on his back while picking at coal above his head only to occasionally dig into a methane gas pocket that would be set ablaze by the carbide lamp on his helmet. He left the mines and later succumbed to black lung. And, yes, this was in the United States of America in the 20th century. We cannot imagine such things today, but if we look to the forgotten coal country of Appalachia today, we will find abandoned towns, endemic and wide spread unemployment and poverty. Millions suffer today due to the utter disregard for human life by King Coal.
Show me anyone else, I mean ANYONE, that can sing just as good (if not better) than they did 30 yrs ago. Thank you Chris for bringing this gift back to us. ❤
When she sings the line, ". . . where you spend your days digging coal out the bottom of your grave . . ." makes my arm & neck hair stand on end every time.
I love the way Chris Stapleton looks at patty loveless. So much respect. I’m sure this was a hard song for her to sing. I bet everyone in that auditorium felt this so much. I was in tears I can’t imagine them not being.
I don't want to offend anybody but Patty Loveless is Country Music. There's some out there who could be a true country singer... Patty has recorded 2 different albums featuring music like Harlan.. These songs will never be played on radio but a gift from Patty to her die hard fans. Patty, all those people who were cheering for you was overdue. Thank you.
I was born and raised in Harlan, KY. I met Patti at the 1986 Telluride BGF where I first saw her do that song. I’m a reasonably smart and articulate man, but words cannot describe the emotions when I hear that song.
I just love Chris and his wife, and even more that they recognize Patty's contribution to Country and the respect for her anazing vocal stryle and emotion. She is still a gifted and amazing artist.
Patty, you are the sound of Appalachia! The words of this song and the sound of your voice literally painted the picture of this song and it’s story. Your duet with Vince Gill on Go Rest High was also unmatched! I’ve visited Kentucky and the people there are as real as you are!
If this song don't give you chills you must not have a heart, hauntingly beautiful. Me and most of my family are from Eastern Kentucky. We know exactly what these words mean from experience.
When I was a teenager, back in the ‘80s, I worked for an older man in my community, hauling hay and chopping tobacco. He told me once that he was glad when World War II started, because the Army was easier than working in the coal mines over in Hazard. He served in combat in the Pacific, if that gives you any idea.
Today she would be considered too country for country music, but she can out sing any artist today country or otherwise. What a strong, powerful & pure voice. And “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” is my favorite song of hers.
Great job getting her out of hiding Chris, we all missed her! She still looks and sounds as great as she always has and looked so happy and honored to be there. Good for you Patty!
Chills and tears. Coal miner's daughter here. Lost two uncles in the mines. The miners and their families paid dear prices for the coal companies to live richly. Sad sad. Patty Loveless is a treasure! Love the Stapletons too!
Man! That woman has soul. Most of us never find the thing we’re that good at, and even those who do find their own genius don’t usually hold onto it that long.
Okay, this got me. I cried dang near through the whole thing. What a heart felt performance. Patty Loveless is my favorite female country star. Chris Stapleton is so admirable for carrying the flame for these country icons.
Patty has more soul than anyone I can think of. She makes so lonesome for those hills and family. Can remember when I've heard (and felt) such a moving ballad. Speaks deeply to my heart. Much needed.
I just heard this song for the first time tonight on the CMAs. Patty's voice in that performance literally stopped me in my tracks as I was walking past the TV and drew me in. I couldn't move until this hauntingly beautiful song was done and I immediately went to search online which lead me here. Amazing.
That was a good performance, but this one is really more about Patty. The CMA song featured Chris too, who I also like. But this is a showcase for Patty.
The first time I heard this song was on one of Brad Paisley's albums. His is good as well, but Patty singing this is hauntingly beautiful. She never got the recognition that she rightly deserves!!!
The vocal singing goes back to the old bluegrass and folk music of the Appalachians that came over with the Immigrants from Scotland and Ireland. I couldn't believe I was hearing it for a minute. It almost brought tears to my eyes
I'm not even from Kentucky but this version always gives me chills. Must be because I really did marry a coal miner's daughter......can't seem to get the West Virginia out of her. 😄
My mama was born and raised in Johnson County, she was a Paintsville girl! Papaw was a semi-pro boxer when he was a young man, then a coal miner, a welder, and a grocer. My great Papaw was a conductor for the C & O. My mamaws were so sweet and loving❤
This song means a lot to me, my Dads name is Harlan, the family farm was in eastern Kentucky. Tobacco was the main crop. Dad died 32 years ago at age 67. Tobacco and mining killed him and all his brothers
Simple and to the point. Patty's beauty shines. Country music needs a lot more of simple and to the point. Her voice and emotion still still brings the songs to life. This world needs more of the salt of earth people like her. She's humble and has no ego about her. When artist allow the music to take center stage magic happens. She's one of a kind.
She is legend & her voice hasn't changed at all & the heart she puts into the song brings it alive. You're right about letting the music not musician taking center stage. It is truly magical
I come back again and again.... I listen and shed tears. This is what life and vocation are about..... I don't know how to express what I feel... But is what Life is About !
Patty and the Stapleton's took that crowd to Church and schooled the entire bunch. Hopefully a whole bunch of priceless lessons learned that day. If not, consider it a priceless opportunity missed.
Dang, I'm balling my eyes out, what an emotional song. Whether coal mines, cotton fields, cotton mills, this brings to mind my grand parents and Greats. Hard working folks who did whatever necessary to take care of their families.
I love this woman!! She is so gracious and loving towards all those that she sings with and sings solo as well or better than many others!! She has actually lived with this entire country group and the grand old opry all of her life! She needs to be inducted into the country music hall of fame now!!

I love the way Chris’s wife looks so in awe at Patty singing true respect!
She raised her hands like she was singing a praise and worship song ✋
The three part harmony is instant chemistry.

She is COUNTRY. And it comes out in her voice. In her attitude. In her humbleness despite being a massive voice in the world of American musice
Very humble😊
Patty never left her bluegrass roots, and it's kept her evergreen in the hearts of country people. God bless you, Patty; I hope you sing forever.
How this woman is not in the hall of fame is nothing but a damn shame
