Not that rivalries never happen; half a century ago, Paul Simon waxed snarky on the Mike Douglas TV Show. He was obviously miffed at the fact that S & G's 59th St Bridge Song was a far greater success for Harper's Bizarre than it was for him and Art Garfunkle. Sometimes it happens that way, but Simon wasn't happy about it. No shade on the immortal Paul Simon, but it wasn't his finest day. Just think of Simon's pompousness for what it was-- the exception to the rule.
I'm totally with you R J Norgard. I play and sing everyones elses songs. Once in a while I entertain someone that way. My dog was giving me a hard time about going to bed, just last night . I grabbed my guitar and played the song I wrote to her, ...she jumped into the air, landing squarely in the middle of the bed. Cat Stevens' very first hit was a song called, " I Love My Dog". Music is of the soul, and almost always about love. It should be shared.

Kathy Mattea is one of the greatest artists in country music, in my opinion. I have always loved and appreciated her music so much! She has such a beautiful and mellow voice and is a great guitarist as well. I love me some Kathy Mattea!
Absolutely beautiful. I saw Ms. Kathy Mattea in concert (Sonoma County) 1989 or 90 when I was 17 years old and her voice is still amazing and very important to hear. I know all of her songs by heart and this is my favorite.
I saw her at about the same time. It was at the Luther Burbank Theater of Performing Arts in Santa Rosa, California. Might have been the same show? It was one of the best shows I have ever seen. At one point, she decided to give the band a break. After they left the stage for a few minutes, she pulled up a stool and sat down and sang a song Acapella. I have yet to this day heard anything to compare! She remains my favorite female vocalist and I long for the day to see her again.
This is my mom and dad. He's 71 and she's 70. They've been together since early teens married for 52 yrs, 4 kids, 6 grandkids and 2 great grandkids later....dad has been in the hospital for almost 2 weeks. Get better Dad
She is someone who should of been recognized in country music more so then she was. I have always loved her music and voice. She was right when she said the guys kinda took over those years.

I was partners in a music company in Nashville in the 80s. Mainly, we did jingles for radio & tv spots. Kathy was waiting tables at Fridays. She also sang both demos and final spots. Aside from her obvious talent, she was an absolutely kick-ass lady. A pleasure to work with. I was so glad when she got big.

You have never really heard this lady until you see and hear her live. I got the pleasure of seeing her at Starwood in Nashville Tn way back when she was just hitting it big. We were listening and needing a beer real bad so we waited until she( so we thought) took a break. The band had walked off the stage and we thought the show was over so we got up and started heading to concessions for our beer. Then all of a sudden she started to sing another song only acapella. We waited and ended up not even moving it was that good. I have yet to hear a singer with the voice I heard that day it was simply put Perfection of sound. If you ever get the chance to see her go you will not be sorry.
Great songwriter and musician. Have loved her since I heard "Walk the Way the Wind Blows" playing in a store in the 80's. Went out and bought the CD, or cassette tape .. She was just in Prescott AZ and I missed it. Want to see her live. She's a WV girl, where my mother is from.

I listened to Nanci sing this song on one of her earliest cassettes long before I ever heard of Kathy Mattea. Before her long version came out on the live Anderson Fair album. Nanci wrote it.

Nancy was singing, writing and performing in Texas and Boston long before Kathy Matea ever heard of her. Some here don't know the depth and breadth of Nancy. At one time, I had every cassette she ever did. Including one from the late 1970's with There's A Light Beyond these woods Mary Margret. My all time favorite Nancy song is "Michael's Song. If you know that one, you do really go back a ways. When I moved and retired to Florida Iost a lot of my treasures
I remember Mary Margaret and saw her and her wonderful band in concert in Orange County (CA) I may know Michaels' Song....my memory isn't as good as it used to be. We all have our faves. Respect Nancy's talent. I relate to Kathy's personality. Her latest, or maybe not, is an album about Coal Mining. Always loved her music! A perfect voice no autotune just a girl and her guitar and more class and talent than most of Nashville.

Kathy Mattea's version is wonderful but Nanci Griffith's original, and especially her stage performance with its story intro, is superb.
