    I love how you give love to looser curls and waves aswell. You don't put one higher than the other. I have waves and big curls not tight. And I've experienced kind of judgement from people saying that it's not curly or naturally curly that I curl it since my hair gets weighed down easily. It's weird and it's hurts my feelings but I'm learning to embrace and love what I have.

      Yeah..I hear you mostly it comes from the snooty curl police society!! I decided to not label my hair and concentrate on getting my hair less oiler and getting 4 days before next wash. I also focus on just making it as healthy and to get my hair to less frizzy as possible. Recently I got me hair to 7 days before washing by exfoliating my scalp before shampoo, shampoo with voluminising shampoo and then let it towel dry with microfiber and put in just a dime size of leave I'm conditioner.

    This is so encouraging! Most of the curly YT community has big, thick tight curly hair, and there are so many who get catty about those of us with looser curls, telling us we aren't really curlies or only because of the products we use, as if they aren't also using products to get their look. The thing I really appreciated is that she had less volume to begin with and I could see myself more here. I've lost so much of my hair thanks to PCOS, thyroid disorder and perimenopause, so my confidence is knocked. This helps.
    One thing I would love is to help more of us learn how we can do these brush styles ourselves. It's harder to define when we are on our own.

      Curl patterns can change over our lifetime, so always good to update the techniques. Have you tried the overnight heatless headband / sock / robe belt curling techniques? Can you do a roller set with velcro rollers? This is great for volume and long lasting style :)

  • @symbeline
    @symbeline Год назад +11

    I've tried and tried and tried this type of technique (sectioning & brushing right side up) and it's the messiest, most complicated thing ever. In the videos it always looks so straightforward but in real life if you have a lot of fine hair it's impossible to part, brush and scrunch without getting it tangled with the next section etc. Takes forever and I end up re brushing everything once I have product everywhere because it never falls perfectly in place no matter how hard I try to properly separate and style each section. Upsidedown is a quick second, doesn't look perfect and evenly distributed but it gets more volume and if you wash, style and diffuse upsidedown it really simplifies things.
    Not criticizing the video, I love Mell and I've been following her for years, but in real life this is not a quick, beginner routine. Doing everything upsidedown it takes me a full hour from the moment I start shampooing to the moment I stop diffusing at like 70% and it doesn't look perfect, it's neither defined nor beach-y sexy but the alternative is adding a good extra 30m to get a half-assed job. I wish it was really simple but it's not 😢 if anybody has tips and tricks to do the right side up, definition & volume method without taking forever to style, getting all the sections tangled, taking forever to section, style and diffuse I'm all ears 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

    • @sparklecharmer
      @sparklecharmer 7 дней назад

      What i do is style upright in two sections, parted down the middle, so that the top and back gets enough product and definition. I brush through and scrunch to define before adding product, then scrunch in whatever (used to be on gel, currently on mousse, still figuring it out). But I diffuse upside down so I can get maximun volume. I"ve tried putting in product upside down but I always end up with not enough on the top and back. Please note that I'm only 3 months into my wavy hair journey and I don't even have a clarifying shampoo yet so I'm suffering from horrible buildup! I totally get you though, last time I tried sectioning like Mel it was a huge mess and I got quite upset. For reference I'm 3a in the front and 2C-2B everywhere else

    This might sound dramatic but I really need these wavy videos. I'm a wavy and I've been having such a hard time accepting my hair. I'm mixed race but have my Irish mother's skintone and (I thought) straight, fizzy hair. All my brothers got my dad's side big, dark, curls and olive skin. I've always felt like I don't look like I belong in my own family. Realising it's not frizz, it's actually some of my dad's texture coming through, has been life changing in how I see myself but a lot of the curly community seems to exclude waves. When I see you caring for wavy hair like this, I feel a better about myself. So thank you because I needed that.

The tip to avoid parting at the crown is exactly what I've been looking for - this has been one of my biggest issues with a lot of curly hair tutorials and I've never, ever seen anyone properly explain how to combat it. I would love to see more videos showing how to achieve some good results with different styles (eg. 2nd and 3rd day looks, when your curls are a little too funky to wear down) on this hair type.

    Hi Mell, I really like your videos. You’re very talented. You asked for comments, so I’m sharing that I felt overwhelmed by the routine. It looks like you brush-styled dozens of wavy clumps, I’m not entirely sure how you applied the foaming gel or how you clipped the roots. I have 2b/c- 3a hair and I love that you’re doing tutorials for wavy hair, btw. I hope I haven’t offended you with me feedback, I’m just not very confident with styling techniques and this seemed like a lot.

    I just tried this routine, not quite dry yet, but looking good (except where I forgot myself and scrunched after making the curls!) . Mell, one thing that really helped me is what I made note of in my second viewing. You tension-brush the section and let it fall onto your second hand. That really helped me keep the half-done part away from the done, hanging parts, so I would not miss any curl families. A simple thing that you do naturally was something that I needed to add to my technique. Thanks, with work, I think this is going to be good for me, and faster and less stressful than my old way!

My wet hair is mostly straight yet it is definitely a wavy curly mix after it's dried. I've curly/wavy hair and I actually like to comb it (in very thin section to not damage it) 3 or 4 days after my wash day, I love the way my curls look once it's combed and by doing this I can stay sometimes more than a week without washing my hair

    I’m going to try skipping conditioner and doing a leave in to see what happens. I like both styles. Her before feels more lived in a everyday vibes and the brush styling feels more sleek. If it’s less work for her than yay. I just wanted it to be fluffed at the root a bit so we didn’t see the separation from the brush styling. Personal preference.

    I have 2b/2c hair, baby fine and silky soft, and EVERYTHING weighs it down. I struggle to find products light enough to to lift and define. I spend a lot of time looking at techniques for curly hair and trying to adjust them for my waves. Any suggestions on adjusting techniques for waves would be really helpful!

It’s awesome how much helpful info for your sharing and it will continue to help ppl who haven’t even watched yet too. Thanks! 💖

    Instead of skipping the conditioner, I actually use conditioner between my two shampoos! Shampoo once, condition, then shampoo the second time before I rinse out the conditioner so I rinse them out at the same time and keep from over-cleansing my ends. Works super well!!

    mel, you’re my only hope, i hope you can read this comment.
    i’m a wavy hair girlie who lives in a tropical country and has serious problems with wave definition/getting clumps at all, and storm season just started, that means the humidity in the air is off the charts. i don’t understand how anyone manages to have natural hair in this place but the people around me are very much in the camp of “keratin straighten your hair and never deal with it every again”.
    how do i avoid humidity frizz? how do i get any kind of definition?

    Great video. Can you do a video on how to use silicones? There is so much about how to avoid them, but I’m unsure what amount would be a good amount. I’m sure if you used only products with silicones (shampoo, conditioner, leave in, gel) then it would be too much, but I could be wrong - there’s not much content on it.

    I like Mel's videos but honestly the wavy hair tutorials fall flat to me. As a wavy haired person I would love more tutorials tailored to our hair type but I find when curly haired people/hair dressers 'style' wavy hair it always looks weighed down/overly piecey (and sometimes although not in this instance stringy). I've noticed these issues with all of Mel's wavy haired content. I appreciate the effort though.

    Great tutorial for us wavy girls Mell - thank you so much! And I will be subscribing to Kate's channel - she had a great personality and I enjoyed watching you two interact. And that stunning hair! I love when you said it looks like there was glitter in her hair - my mom had beautiful red/ginger hair too - and hers had that glittery quality also. Mom's hair tended to have a slightly frizzy look to it though - so she almost always wore it in braids- or would use hot rollers to curl it on special occasions when she left it loose. The curls would fall out quickly (she only used hairspray and no other product) but some curls here and there would keep their shape until she washed her hair. Now I understand that she must have been a wavy/curly girl, and had curled a few pieces in the natural direction of her curls/waves, so it would last longer. I wish I had known before she passed that she had wavy hair - I would have loved helping her find her waves with your techniques :)
    I Loved this video - and would love to see more of you styling a variety of hair types like this video in the future. You are such a great wealth of knowledge on all types - you could help so many people by sharing your knoweldge unique to their hair while demonstrating on a real life example - that has hair that may be very different from yours. Even though you explain the differences that other hair types should know, having a visual on their hair type can make all the difference for some people to be able to do the techiques that they couldn't visualize doing on their own hair - when it was demontrated on a different hair type before.
    Thank you to you, and your sister, and your whole family and support team - for letting us into your lives- and helping people find, embrace and honor their curls and waves :)
