    Just traded in my lifted '18 JLUR on 37s for an R1T. I could not be happier... I know my rock crawling days are over for now, and that kinda saddens me... But knowing I can take my R1T almost anywhere I took my Jeep, is insane to me. I'm so excited to see what it will do this summer.

      Congratulations! I love my R1T quad (2 years and 40k miles on it). I haven’t had it rock crawling yet, but wonder why you think your rock crawling days are over? R1S did the full Rubicon Trail and I’ve seen a few R1T videos rock crawling. Preparing for a mountain west trip and just added some rock sliders to my R1T (I installed Megawatt’s fab and they’re really beefy).

      Very cool! What's been the best thing about the change and also what's something unexpected that you're not thrilled about?

    • @meinthe303
      @meinthe303 8 месяцев назад

      @johnkiefer1314 Thank you! I have the quad as well! It's awesome to see you still love yours after some serious time! Its only been 4 days, I love it so much I get sad when I'm not driving it! Lol! I was just looking at those sliders yesterday they look great! Was installation simple? My concern about rockcrawling; the entry and departure angle is far less than on my Jeep. In the Rivian I won't be able to nose up to something and grind up or out of obstacles... Maybe later when they start coming up with aftermarket bumpers with less plastic! Lol... I'm ok with moderate trails for now. Until I get some scratches in it. 😉

      @merusadventure it has an insanely comfortable ride, the technology makes even a new JL jeep seem archaic. I drove my jeep to Witchita from Denver to trade it in. When I got to Witchita, I was tired and edgy because the jeep took effort and it is loud and I didn't realize how uncomfortable it was until I drove home in the R1T. Lol. Plus, in the Jeep it cost me $157 to get there, and $67 to get home in the Rivian. Win win if you ask me! Lol... In all honesty I don't see a downside yet. I am a little concerned about how range issues will impact my camping trips... That might be a big downside. I see people overlanding in them, but it looks like it takes more effort than in the Jeep due to charge points... I was thinking Merus would be a fun road trip this summer! Are there chargers near your location?

      @@merusadventureit’s our first EV, so we had to rethink how to plan long road trips. Definitely can’t just hop into the truck and go, need to plan the route for charging. It takes a bit longer, but also makes for a more enjoyable trip - we eat better because we dine while we charge (no more drive through garbage). But charging logistics hasn’t stopped us from going anywhere we want. The best part the is the amazing design capabilities - they put the fun in function for sure. 0-60 3.5s. Air suspension with McClaren cross links (rides like a sports car in a trucks form). Gear tunnel. Onboard compressor. 120v and 12v outlets. Smart torque vectoring with sand mode, snow mode, rock mode, rally, and drift modes. Rally is unreal on rough two track - coupled with that suspension, it provides an insanely secure feel. R1T has highest safety/crash test rating in class. High resolution aerial maps on the navigation screen. It’s endless man. Best vehicle I’ve ever owned. American company, manufactured in America.

    You obviously can't compare a stock Rivian R1S to an off-road centric customized Jeep like this, but the Rivian is more than capable considering how good it is on man made surfaces. Unless you're heading for very gnarly trails, the Rivian is an easy pick for overlanding. Battery juice is still an issue, but the Adventure Network and access to Teslas charging stations is on its way to making this a non-issue. Having access to all that clean power for camping is a big advantage.

    • @merusadventure
      @merusadventure  8 месяцев назад +3

      Fully agree. I think it's an excellent choice for overlanding and will run 95% of all the trails out there with zero issues. It's not going to keep up with highly modded vehicles on very challenging trails but i think in the next 5 years we will see EV's that will start showing up traditional fuel vehicles off-road.

    Had a great time with Dirk and the crew at Merus. It was fun to put our R1S through such a variety of challenging tests, both on the test track and in the canyon. We'll be back for more!

      Hi Ted. - I noticed at one point in the video that you had the vehicle in Rock Crawl mode. Did you use this throughout the course? Also curious what tire pressure you were utilizing. Thanks. Nice video. And I approve your color choices!

      @tedmanasa907 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@douglaspierce7940 Yes, I kept it in Rock Crawl throughout the course. I'm not sure that was the only mode I could have used, but it worked well. FG/FE for the win!

      Ted, thank you so much for doing this video with us! It was really fun and it amazed us to see what your R1S could do. We hope to have you back soon and hopefully with other Rivian peeps also.

      What motor setup do you have? Considering a new rivian trying to balance between range and traction. I like the range of the dual motor max but wondering if having the quad motors is necessary for this type of traction?

    • @tedmanasa907
      @tedmanasa907 Месяц назад

      @@humblesophos I have the quad motor. I think I’d get the quad again and trade range for control and power. I haven’t found range to be an issue on any trip so far. We are planning a trip from TX to MI and I’m not worried about range. Extra range only equates to a few fewer charging stops, maybe adding a few hours to trip time. I’d rather do that than limit what I can do off-road or get stuck. But I think it depends on how far you want to take your vehicle. I plan to do Moab someday, something I’d very much prefer to do it in a quad. Hope that helps.

    Im not going to lie that was pretty impressive. Especially from what is essentially a luxury off road SUV on very street-able tires with a newer driver. Id like to see some oldies but goodies on this course like the eternal short wheel base enemies Nissan Xterra with its awesome ABLS and Toyota FJ cruiser with its full coil suspension.

    You are very brave doing this in the Rivian. I guess that's what it was designed for. Very impressive. I'll never do this with my R1S but it's good to know that I have that capability. I'm very surprised that you didn't use the cameras to help you navigate.

    • @merusadventure
      @merusadventure  8 месяцев назад +4

      It's definitely capable. We didn't use the cameras due to 2 things; 1) We wanted to see other data on the screens 2) I know the course like the back of my hand so didn't need any nav help.

      On the down hill portion at 17:25 he says decent control lets the wheels go backwards to control the decent. On the first test I saw the wheels spin too. Not sure if decent was on during the first one and that is why it did that or by design in the rock control mode.
