  • The Jeep Gladiator is well established as a capable off-road pickup truck, so we decided to use it as a benchmark for an industry newcomer: the all-electric Rivian R1T. The R1T is a beast in its own right off-road, but we were curious how it would stack up against the tried-and-true Jeep on the trails. Head to the video above to find out!

    I've got a gladiator sport S with a 3.0 eco diesel. So it doesn't have the crawler mode and so forth that the Rubicon or Mojave has, but it does have 450 Lbs or torque and gets a lot better fuel economy.

    • @electropentatonic
      @electropentatonic Год назад +1

      The fuel economy on small diesels is a hard sell for me. Take today's AAA national fuel averages for instance, 3.474 and 4.364 dollars per gallon for gas and diesel, respectively. At 19 combined and 24 combined, the price per mile is .183 and .182, a saving of .001cents per mile for the diesel powered Jeep. In the instance of Jeep-S, the 3.0 carries a $4,150 premium overhead. Divide the overhead by the savings per mile and you'll get your break-even time in miles, this point is 4,150,000 miles. If mpg costs are the perspective, diesel Jeeps are a significant loss for the purchaser.

I understand that normal cars also lose mpg on aired down tires, all these little caveats, but I still feel like I'd be better off out in the middle of nowhere with a gas vehicle. Maybe just the abundance of gas stations vs charging points in these often rural/uninhabited areas. • @TheBowerbird
      @TheBowerbird Год назад +1

      Except EVs like the Rivian are incredibly efficient off-road. Vastly more so than things like Jeeps. This is because they don't use any significant amount of power while idling and can regen going down hills. See the Charge Overland page for examples of his multi-day journeys in his Rivian. Also, "RC car"? So is a gas car a lawn mower?

    • @nathanjohnson3668
      @nathanjohnson3668 Год назад

      ICE are also super fuel efficient off road because they can turn off instead of sitting there idling lol. Only turn on when you need to move. I can stay weeks off grid and carry some gas cans if needed. Any passer by can also fuel me if needed. Don’t over reach. EVs are very cool for daily driving and commuting. But don’t compare to true off roading or over landing. Going fast on dirt and dune running I guess but why not just buy a razor that you can beat on instead of $100k+ daily car lol. And most off road vehicles are about range, control, and reliability. You don’t need a ton of torque to off-road and overland.

  • @off-roadingexplained8417
    @off-roadingexplained8417 Год назад +1

    I honestly wonder if a Rivian can even keep up with a Cherokee Trailhawk (also has a rear locker). I don't think articulation is the limiting factor. A Hummer H1 doesn't have good articulation but it doesn't mean it can't off road.
    Engine torque almost doesn't matter at all... Gearing matters. WHEEL torque matters ... The Jeep probably still has more wheel torque. Also , even if the jeep had no locker it will still send the power around with BLD... Rivian... Yawn...

But we crawled around for over an hour on a simple trail and some small obstacles in ev mode and the thing still had battery by the end.
