The overdrive/boost/tube screamer pedal is something that I did not realize the importance of back in the day. While I was happy with my sound back then, it could have been so much better.
What a great video. Dagan's energy is really contagious! one thing I would add to the technique section, is the importance of muting whatever you're not playing, when the gain is up. if you're playing on the top three strings, you have to mute the bottom three strings using your hands, to prevent notes from ringing out. This is probably the most crucial technique when it comes to being articulate and clear despite all the gain!
you're right Dagan, looks are subjective. its all in what amp, pickups and pedals you're using. Buckethead shreds on a Gibson Les Paul and Dave Murray uses a Fender Strat, both of which are considered ol school guitars and they both rock
According to Prince's guitar builder Dave Rusan, Prince liked the EMG 81 because of it's low noise, and with its built in buffer, it was better for driving longer cables, which was a much bigger consideration back then. Most people think Prince liked the 81 because of the tone, but no.
I play metal on a Strat that has the active mid boost circuit and it sounds fantastic. My 2 cents (or pence) for metal is to consider what pick you use and how you hold it and attack. This makes a huge difference in tone. Also for the trem picking and chuggas, relax. When you play hard you tense up and get exhausted. Try to stay loose for the tough bits. All of the best musicians look like they're not even trying, because they are relaxed when they shred. Also play standing up, 100% Dagan!
I've tried to love active pups for 3 decades and have yet to really bond with a set. The closest I came was to the Dave Gilmour Strat set which was close but ended up swapping them out for the DG passives. The EMG60 is the only neck pup(humbucker) I didn't mind and actually liked it a lot. I just didn't want to deal with wiring the passive/active in one guitar.
This gives me a lot of information. It all makes sense now especially with bringing, I've heard about it but they said it's mainly used to mute unwanted cords so I would wonder why does my Amp sounds way different than others I have a lot of things to learn
I have a B.C. Rich Ironbird, and Blackstar HT Stage 60 112 MKII and I can't accomplish pinched harmonics with that set up alone. Went into guitar center and played through a pedal and was able to do a pinched harmonic playing around so I'm convinced I need some sort of overdrive pedal.
I use an EVH head with the EL34 tubes and it has more than enough gain without boosting. I do use the ten band eq though and that really tightens it up
John 5 is a single coil Tele player and he gets some pretty vicious tone. Also a ton of early hard rock from Richie Blackmore(Rainbow and Deep Purple) to Jimmy Page("59 Tele given to him by Jeff Beck!) and Hendrix was all single coils.
he's an idiot. metal tone does not depend on mics. Any guitar can do metal. Master's Hammer, Pungent Stench & other extreme metal bands used SC too. They used whatever they had or liked. Reach enough gain & your done, no need for vids.
Yeah Duncan makes the hot rails which is a single coil shape and fits single coil slots but is a humbucker. The tech has come a long way. You can take anything and make it sound metal with the right pickups, effects, and amp. You could mod a Gretsch or hollow body with some active EMGs or Fishmans if you wanted. Which might be kind of cool in a different wacky way.
Nice one Dagan all you need for a metal tone is all Dagain! 🤣 Also I never thought about Russell Brand until you mentioned him! P. S. You're alternate picking is alot better than mine although I like metal I've never really been into that kinda speed riffing open strings. Maybe I'll go practice it a bit. 🤘🏻 🎸 🤘🏻
For me, it’s an EVH 5150 Iconic with an MXR GT-OD in front and MXR Ten Band EQ in the FX loop. I may try the upside down V EQ curve to see how that works, but I NEED my bass 😆🤘
The amp and a humbucker are essential to metal. For a guy in his house Spark40 or mini gets palm mutes very tubelike where the Helix and Headrush fall short for me. To gig Id get a tube head like this evh or Peavey 6505 or Invective.
You have now allowed me to take my next step in my metal journey!!! I wonder what this shit would sound like strapped to my electric violin... oh my the possibility!!! Don't worry I'll try not to die in a fiery explosion... to much... ........ BYE! And I have a Waza Metalzone, you're absolutely right Dagan; the damn things deadly! In addition I like that you mentioned the nessesity for a noise gate; what are your thoughts on the ISP Decimator II? It's just so bloody simple! "Dimension C" (DC-2w) gives it a full-bodied sound in addition to a "true" overdrive and/or distortion too. Loved your video!!!
every genre can be played on a tele. metal? jim root has a signature strat. grunge? jason everman can be seen playing one on the cover of nirvana's bleach. blues rock? jimmy page played one on led zepplins first album. british invasion? Kieth richards of the rolling stones is known for one.
Hey Dagan, quick question for you. I used to play guitar all the time but it kind of fell to the way-side, life got in the way.. well i'm looking to get back into playing once again and I'm on the hunt for a guitar and amp. I'm thinking 600 to 900 dollar range for a guitar and 400 to 600 dollar range for an amp. As such I've singled it down to a few guitars. The Solar S2.6C, The PRS SE Custom 24, and the Fender Player Series Stratocaster. As for the amp? I 100% want the Boss Katana Artist MkII. Out of the 3 guitars I mentioned, which do you think would be the best to go with? I cannot for the life of me make up my mind. Would appreciate any feedback or suggestions you might have. Thanks!
Oh man, I remember back when I had a Rockman-X100 and I had it plugged into my stereo. To go to my buddy's house to jam, I would pack up my stereo and my Radio Shack self-powered speakers ... which had a 5 band EQ. At one point, I dropped the mids all the way and boosted the highs and lows ... I discovered the best metal sound. It wasn't until I got into a band, where I discovered that guitar is a mid-range instrument and everything else covered the high and lows ... LOL!!! :D
Can someone comment on this to explain that to play metal gain is mostly necessary,my parents don't understand and think that I can just use an amp with only treble and bass knobs,no pedals whatsoever
You definitely want to have a 3 band eq, bass mid treble on your amp. I strongly recommend the Roland Cube 10gx, killer amp... even without a pedal buuuuuuut if you plug in a Boss Metalcore running through the clean channel it's badass!! Just those too alone is not that expensive at all and I think that the Micro Cube amp is even cheaper. I highly recommend....all the best with finding that METAL dude🤘
I think Orange amps are undoubtedly some of the best amps for metal. They’re naturally bassy, so if you turn up the treble and dial down the bass on one it gives you this nice balanced sound that’s hollow and fuzzy.
Well... I mean your mileage may very with this guy's advice however humbuckers are called such because they're hum cancelling so they're better at high gain because of less noise. Single coils are actually higher gain as you lose some with the humbuckers setup. Another point he wasn't quite on with was the amp and pedal bit. You don't need a pedal if you have a modded marshall amp or a peavy 6505. Conversely you don't need a good amp if your sound is pedal based. Depends on your style. I choke my bass too like him but I do it different so it's all in what style you're into.
Absolutely my dude, well said! I actually prefer to only stick too an overdrive and/or distortion.... and/or the noise suppressor even though I found out the distortion pedal I have,Boss Metalcore actually has built in suppression but yeah, some people could be quite happy with a pretty cheap ordinary amp with a bunch of fancy pedals or vice versa. My amp is a Roland Cube and most definitely happy with the quality of it, tbh just the amp with no pedals sounds pretty damn good🤘
I have a peavey vypr 75 watt. I turn on the tube screamer and crank both gain buttons all the way. I put the low straight up and I put the mid/high directly right. I'm bad at explaining
What you’re basically saying, if I’m gathering this right, is that the gain on both the amp and the pedal are maxed out, the bass is halfway up at 12:00 and the mids and treble are at 3:00, using clock arms as a reference. Is that right?
@@joshuatyson1907 damn I still use these settings😭. yeah pretty much thats what I was trying to say but I think I had gotten confused because there wasn't 10 numbers, only 7 dots. but you got it
i used to scoop the mids but then when i started learning more leads i realized it sounded like shit. added the mids and the leads come through louder and clearer. thats my experience with my limited equipment anyway.
I used to be daft and scooped my mids. Imagine a tub of icecream. I would scoop so deep I would scoop the down to the surface of the table it was sitting on. I discovered miss and brought them back. Now I actually have tone!
I recommend a preamp pedal or some sort of distortion pedal to use. Clock bass, mids and trebles all the same at about 3-6 (ideally at 5) then, dial in your tone on your pedal(s) then onto your amp. Some distortion pedals sound better as a preamp to the overdrive/distortion setting on your amp, some sound better on the clean.
Now I'm ready to play for church
Lol
Lmaooo
Dude same
They will love ya
😈
I love Dagan's energy. It makes his videos fun.
I didn’t expect to see my guitar! Haha - the Epiphone LP Prophecy, love it.
He's simply great. he enjoys what he does.
The overdrive/boost/tube screamer pedal is something that I did not realize the importance of back in the day. While I was happy with my sound back then, it could have been so much better.
And compressor too
I used to use a Metal Zone, but loved the way you can add mids and adjust the mid frequency. It's a great pedal!
While the meral zone is decent the heavy metal hm2 was way better imo
Switch from metal zone to a morbid drive, not a good descision.
What a great video. Dagan's energy is really contagious! one thing I would add to the technique section, is the importance of muting whatever you're not playing, when the gain is up. if you're playing on the top three strings, you have to mute the bottom three strings using your hands, to prevent notes from ringing out. I wish my music instructors in college were as entertaining as Dagan. It would have saved on coffee.

Hello Colin
Love the vid. Metal player here. I just noticed that as I air guitar with your picking, I was placing the mute palm on my leg lol.
That Explorer looks so small hangin' off you Dagan!
Yeah, how tall is he? I'm guessing like 8'. Lol.
I’ve met Dagan and he’s a great bloke. I think he’s about 6ft 3”.
He mentions in a video on a Squier mustang that he is 6 foot 7!
It looks perfect for how hes built since it looks like what a mustang looks like on kurt cobain
you're right Dagan, looks are subjective. its all in what amp, pickups and pedals you're using. Buckethead shreds on a Gibson Les Paul and Dave Murray uses a Fender Strat, both of which are considered ol school guitars and they both rock
Dagan has evidently been practicing in lockdown
I kinda want to be a RUclips creator but I don't think I could ever match this guy's super positive personality
Kudos.
Kerry also used a 6 band eq to push the front end upside down v shape, I love doing that, push more mids and tighten up the bass.
Great knowlege!
Love that A7X riff at 11:08. A simple but great riff
whats the song called?

The most helpful vid on metal tone I’ve seen as a noob! Thanks 🙏
I like how Dagan went from like a Randy Rhoads type riff to Angel of Death by Slayer
Seriously the best, most fun and knowledgeable videos I have watched. Please keep them up. Loving them here down in Aus
I play metal on a Strat that has the active mid boost circuit and it sounds fantastic.

For tremelo I can relax but I have a hard time palm muting without tensing up because if I don't pick it hard enough it sounds weak.
Glad to hear&see you are having riff's of FUN! The Old Man NC
Some amp settings on the EQ might have been helpful, other than not scooping the mids. Otherwise, good tips.
Daaaaamn. I love this video. The tone is soooooo close to aounding old school. Lezzzgoooo! 🤘🤘
at this point the only person im trusting off youtube is Dagan 🤘🎸

Looking over at my amp with the gain all the way up and the scooped mids
Ah yes Captain Jack Sparrow, my favorite guitar player!
"and you'll be in Iron Maiden in no time!" Dude... you just became my favorite person on RUclips.
The mxr ten band eq pedal ran through the effects loop really dials in the tone. Tightens it up a lot
I use an EVH head with the EL34 tubes and it has more than enough gain without boosting. I do use the ten band eq though and that really tightens it up

I do this stupid thing where I have an octave down boosting my low end, kinda fun, probably not True Tone™️.
