Me: that sounds good
Misha: that's a little too much
Me: exactly
Truth
This got a good chuckle out of me.
All you need is a Metalzone plugged directly into the mic input of your 2012 Compaq laptop.
Haunted Smores I actually own a 2012 compaq laptop and boy is it a piece of shit. Was. It died.
Dude you're a genius
No....a line6 spider
You’re a monster.
Metalzone is actually a good pedal! People just don't know how to use it correctly.
That is a sick tone.
You only need:
- 2000 dollar head
- 1200 dollar cabinet
- 250 dollar pedal
- 3700 dollar guitar
- some skill
- chug
Metal Zone. Scoop the 'Mids' !! Noise Gate. Down tune to Drop Z tuning
clearly not... One , the tone suck. Two, you can easily clone this tone with ozone eq and a good amp sim like helix for ex.
Hardly true, I use a 6505 with a boss super overdrive. Actually sounds tighter and brighter then this
Eddy van Marwijk chügg
about 7k in USA with around 3,5k cash a month... In my countrie, would be 42k brazilian reais, and the average salary is 1000 reais per month. would take 4 years to buy everything
How to Dial In a Modern Metal Tone. First start with your signature guitar with your signature pickups and plug it into you signature amp and then use your signature overdrive pedal in front of the amp to get the tone you want.
Man... I need to get some companies to make me a Signature Guitar, pickups, amp AND pedals... guess no metal tone for me haha :(
Lol wats wrong m8 u too not dedicated enough to buy a real amp on Reverb?
Thomas Mims he’s literally making a very valid point here, the whole thing is a giant ad.
@@Heath-vz7lc
Of course it is. When you’re sponsored you are sort of obligated to sell the gear. Also if you spent a ton of time designing gear then you would damn well advertise it and only use that gear because it does exactly what you want.
This video isn’t about the gear. It’s about dialing tones in. The gear is just what he uses. But he shows how to dial tones in which is the actual point of the video.
Do you want him to show you how to do it on a dual rectifier, a Marshall or a line 6 spider with a metal zone? Nobody has time for that.
@@Heath-vz7lc Dude, This not a demo playing random riffs ,he is just making an informative video using those gears.
The video should be called "How to advertise your signature gear with Misha Mansoor"
In a way, yeah. But these methods work with most amps, OD pedals, and guitars. It's not as if it's impossible to achieve tight, percussive and bright-but-not-ice-pickish metal tones without these pieces of gear. People have been doing it for years. He just used what he was part of developing, and why not? They're exactly what he had in his mind, and what he can best articulate this points with. Should Paul Gilbert also not teach with his signature guitars?
The Invective is not a signature amp, he was just a consultant. Supposedly.
Im totally cool with it as long as he doesnt go full Chapman and say "obviously, I'm the owner of Horizon Devices and this is my signature amp with Peavey" every single time he mentions the gear at all. "Also, these are my signature Bareknuckle Pickups, I am a Bareknuckle artist, and I'm also the owner of Horizon Devices go check out Horizon Devices"
that shit gets annoying.
J Har come on man....this is obviously a commercial masked as an educational video. If sweetwater sells any of these items he probably gets a percentage
why you butthurt, need a hug?
Hey I just skipped an ad to watch another ad!
but the last ad at least did djent

@@MrPeezySleezy thank you for explaining the meme peter!
So when is the Misha Mansoor signature string tape coming out?
Neo Cortex it's actaully already out
I NEED THIS
signature oxygen for when ure out of breath from playing
I'm trying to get his signature speaker cable xD
I'm waiting on his shirt that says "theres a couple ways of doing that"
i love how Misha is a total jokester at heart but has awesome presentation skills when being professional!!!
I love how Misha always talks like an informacial Guy when it comes to selling/ promoting products or doing tutorials.
His bands 1 big tech demo, but hey mishas gotta eat too i suppose
Dear Sweetwater,
You guys have been KILLING it recently in the content game. I just wanted y'all to know that. Keep it up!
Sincerely,
A guy who watches gear videos a lot.
Yeah I agree. They also get real people that actually know what they're talking about instead of hacks.
Why is everyone complaining about the fact that he is using his own signature gear? He is only demonstrating the main concept of a modern metal tone.
I've used his tips a lot and I'm playing through a Laney IRT60h head and a Peavey Valveking 412, with a simple OD in front of it (MXR Custom Shop GT-OD), it's not the actual gear his demonstrating (even though this is probably a clever way to promote his signature stuff as well) it's rather what you do with what you've got.
And yeah, not every piece of gear will give you a magnificent modern metal tone, but use his tips with the gear you've got and if it just doesn't work for you, look for som nice, used, gear online that you think will be a step up from what you've got!
Rock on! 🥀
people love to whine and complain, don't they?
How to dial in a siiiick metal tone: have a $4000 guitar, a $3000 amp, $1000 worth of pedals, ran into the best recording equipment mixed by a professional. Easy.
Never fails
federz666 Yeah really, how easy was that? Lol
SEE CHEEP METAL HERE bro! -- The SlayeriZer
The guitar is 2800 but ya i see your point, some of us are broke. Some of us are not.
dont need all that if u just stack mikus.
These tones are the easiest to get tbh
oh hey bro
Yeah with a 3K guitar and a peavey invective lol
@Johnny13Ghost get an orange micro dark and a mini tube screamer :P
@@bdaquatics7584 naw man. I mean, the gear is awesome and it’ll get you there easier but you can get these tones fairly easy in terms of setting up the gear.... but a lot of misha’s tone is his playing style which is obviously impossible to replicate exactly.
But in terms of the gear a decent guitar with good passive medium output pickups paired with some kind of tube screamer style overdrive pedal (you will want a noise gate somewhere in there) and a peavey 5150 or 6505... boom. You’re golden.
If you use software emulation just find the equivalent to this gear and fiddle with the settings. Avoid too much gain though. Also make sure you get a really good IR because that is where a lot of software amp emulations kind of falter.
You gotta remember. Misha didn’t have this sick gear his whole life. He grew into it and any serious guitar player will do the same. The player dictates the sound. The gear are the tools that help you get there.
A bad guitar player can make the best gear sound like ass. But a good guitar player can make anything sound good.
@@pmckeown22 that’s what I use, a micro dark and a TS9, nice tone
Hes not going to come and promote brands he's not affiliated with, no one with any good business sense would do that, if you owned a carpentry company you wouldn't drive around with the competition advertisement all over you vehicles would you? He shared good information that works for him and his gear got a little plug too, what's the problem?
Excuse me, but I'm going to need you to keep your common sense and logical arguments out of this youtube comment section, thanks!
Right? Who needs that stuff?
hahahahhaaaaa
Huh? Musicians demo non-sponsored gear all the time.
If it’s presented as an instructional video, then yes, he should promote whatever works for him, regardless of brand. Part of what brought viewers to this page is the ethos of his name and respect for his sound. If he’s purposeful omitting key components or gear for the sake of advertisement, criticism is justified.
Nothing wrong with plugging your products in an advertisement, but trying to present it as genuine instruction is dishonest.
The last thing I want to see is an artist being distracted from explaining their technique and tools because they're using tools they don't normally work with.
In that scenario, we would have likely heard, "This really doesn't achieve the gating, mids, attack, low end, or saturation I'm looking for, but if I had my pick ups, amp, and booster, you'd see what I'm unfortunately unable to convey with this limited equipment."
Which is more instructional? The assumption is that you can provide the free lesson he gave with some other, unspecified equipment.
Because he didn't use this unspecified equipment, his character is now being called into question because he used what he uses.
This is why I tell people to keep their kids as far away as possible from public and most private schools, because very basic standards of critical thinking are nonexistent in the vast majority of these environments.
Wondeful video! And thanks Misha for a wonderful overdrive pedal! I run it through Bias Fx and man does it make that program sound so much more clear!
Really good information, I like what I heard. Sounds good. Great video too, thanks 🤘
I'm thinking a Spider IV on insane with a line 6 distortion pedal with the settings turned all the way up
Adam Youdell No but a Spider IV set right with this pedal and some good pickups might sound very usable
Adam Youdell Glen would kill himself if he heard you talking this smack
Rotten Cheerio hahaha, love it!

ALL THE GAIN, NO MIDS. SLAYERRRRRRRR
God that metal tone is just so sweet and right on the spot.
beautiful sound !!!
That was very informative, thanks!
Actually pretty cool! Been playing for a long time and never really experimented much with this. I will from now on.
seriously this amp sounds fantastic. like I never heard before
awesome. and how cool is it that we now have BOTH this Amp and this OD in our Helix as of firmware v3.50 !!
I just ordered the Precision Drive from Sweetwater. I don't think I have ever been this excited for a pedal to arrive. I'm going to be using it with my EVH 5150 iii 50w.
Pitdog360 was it worth it? I have the 2x12 50 watt and Everytime I add an overdrive I end up never using it. Amp sounds killer on its own.
*pretends it's not his own signature gear* Misha. You kill me man. Love ya
I just love the precision drive, every friggin millimeter
awesome job sir love that guitar
I'm impressed. Sweetwater is great.
Just got my precision drive from sweetwater.. added so much attack and tightness to my 6505mh. Mid gain tones are great as well!
Sick, it does work like a charm with that head doesn't it! I definitely tested the prototype versions of the Precision Drive with that head!
Have you used it along with the Axe FX?
I've got a helix and curious on how this would match up in the loop(or up front).
wyldelabel357 I think there have been videos done on the way this pedal interacts with the axe fx
I have used it with both the Axefx and Helix, and both of those units play wonderfully with pedals, so it pairs really well with them!
Misha Mansoor btw don't listen to the haters on this video, this video can be really helpful for beginners even without the precision drive as this can be achieved with any tube screamer (maybe not as good though ;D)
Wow, Misha really is a good teacher!!👌
Thank´s man for shareing Love cheers
You are the man!
A lot of you folks missed the point of this video. Yes, he’s using REALLY high end gear, but these principles apply amps and pedals in general. Example: how many of you have 5150/ 6505? Shoot, you might even be using a Boss Katana or an Amp sim. I use Ignite Amps Emissary. Tube, solid state, sims, these principles apply. As far as using an OD, go get a used TS-9 or Maxon 808.
The Precision Drive is an awesome pedal. Im using it with my Diezel Herbert and its amazing.
Awesome video
It really is a good, unique and multi purpose pedal. I'm not even into super heavy stuff,as my main sound, but it just gives you cut. If you like that lean sound it's a must get!
It's 2022. I got myself a PRS SVN SE Mark Holcomb signature, Archetype Nolly by Neural DSP and I'm able to get really sick tones like this one with very little effort. I know I sound like an ad, but the fun I have playing along to Periphery songs and other metal bands, feeling like I sound like these guys... it's just the best and you don't have to break your bank. If you're into production, you can get yourself the Djin Bass and GGD plugins to program in drums and bass and there you go... full band in a box and it sounds sick.
Awesome!!!
I like the information. ...thanks, Misha!
His tones on Metal Guitar Gods are sweet!
Funny how he pointed out the added "weight" of the tone once he cranked up the low end a bit because I heard that too! It sounded really sonically dense. I'mma have to try that tape trick as well. I've only seen people use scrunchies and those velcro things.
I first saw Periphery back in April of this year, and I'm finally getting to see Animals As Leaders live for the first time in a few months so here's to seeing them twice in the same year by accident! lol
Thank you!
Good lesson
I've gotta say, one of the cleverest ideas I've heard in a while is putting a built in noise gate to an amp and/or pedal.
Met this guy at one of their philly shows such a cool dude
I would love to meet misha. Him and all of the other dudes in periphery seem so chill
for only 7000.00 you can have Misha's tone.
sounds like a better deal right there.
Fractals are great, but they don't respond like tube amps unless played through a tube power amp into a cabinet..
Eh. Second hand 6505 and a decent OD (love the Green Rhino) and a noise-gate and you have a pretty great metal tone for not too much.
@@xxczerxx agree 100%
man this guy is so nice
LOOOOOVE the look and sound of that guitar MISHA.
me too
AAAhhhh! it's you! That made my day. Keep killin it man.
I loved the initial sound before adjustments :)
I kinda did too. It was warmer and less harsh. Depends on genre and taste I suppose.
I think as people get better at their instrument they inherently lower their gain. Early on gain can help cover up mistakes, and make you feel a little more confident in playing. I still you use a little extra gain live to help out with the small stuff so I don't feel like I need to not move much to sound good. Just as it covers up mistakes though, it covers up articulation as well. Picking dynamics being the main thing it destroys. You lose the audible difference between soft and hard pick attacks, which is especially annoying when tracking for a record.
Misha is an excelent teacher
I dig that sound. +1up for pedal.
Luckily I have this pedal, when I saw what a cool guy Misha was I had to try his gear. It’s amazing. Just FYI, don’t turn the noise gate all the way up, I find it can snip off the front attack, so dial it back a bit till everything is clear. I think this is for the guys that have more powerful pickups than me.
I got a Joyo Zombie Bantamp and a Harley Benton 1×12 cab with a Vintage 30 Celstian speaker.I have owned a shit ton of more expensive amps, but this one is my fav. to date.I even use it with a Fender Strat and it sounds bad ass!.No boost, overdrive or metal pedal at all.
im sitting here running my axe fx throguh my monitors while listening to his tone on my monitors and my tone is 100 times better.
gotta love axe fx
I got the pedal from the 2nd batch in the beginning. I'm running a Kiesel 8 into it, then into a Line 6 Helix and it's sounding amazing. It's no Axe FX but I can't afford that after the Kiesel lol.
Hey, it's the guy from the cover of last month's Mocha Imporium!
the invective sounds good! you created the new evolution on the EVH amplifier . Hope peavey and you create an small watt amp of the invective!
Didnt even say once that all of the gear he used is his signature gear, even the cab😂
Meh I feel like anyone who actually cares already knows hahah
This is most certainly true :)
So what if it's his signature gear? The advice is still the same regardless of the gear.
Signature gear is stuff you use because it’s your favorite. Makes sense to me
I like the fact that actually Misha reads the stupid words we got to write
needs a lil more gain, proceeds to turn it to the max. I like his style!
Short answer, use all signature gear valued at approximately $10,000
That power chord is what I call, legendary
Misha you are awesome
Darn, I drove by Sweetwater last week and missed him.
One Note of epicness
Definitely different different from how I go about getting my metal tone. But then I'm playing in the realm of sludge and death.
Tight !
Great Video Misha Very concise and easy to understand!
Any info on "Boost" tone comparison between the "On Board" Boost on the Invective! & that of the Precision Drive???
Love the onboard so far!! Could the Precision Drive be ran in the loop as well to silence the noise floor static shhhhh sound (cant find the right word lol) of the Invective!!?
Thanks!!
Misha's goodtiger shirt is fantastic
Not a Periphery fan by a country mile, but I dig this guy. Now, to go try this process out on my $400 Marshall DSL. 🤣
......AND BAM!!!! here's my pedal lol
I kinda came up with the same stuff that Misha is doing:
TS Style Pedal -> Gate -> low gain setting on the preamp with enough bass/mids to give you some oomph -> 2nd Gate
I also tape the strings behind the nut and bridge on Tune o Matics.
This is truly the best way to get good and tight live sound.
Herrdesrings dampening the springs' vibrations on tremolo guitars is also quite useful
First mistake - using tremolo guitars :D
I tend to block them anyway but I kinda like string thru tuneomatics most!
Herrdesrings my favorite are the adjustable wraparound ones. Such a clever design.
I didn't like trems when I bought my strat but I wanted a strat so...
That’s Basically the whole point of playing Live! But I like to have the the mids boosted the most, sometime have the gain at the same level, but keep the Try Gain As low as possible
Sweetwater is becoming my favorite online music store. I bought Amplitube 4 and got a call from a rep to see if I needed any help or if I was happy with the modeler. You don't get that from Guitar Center which is going out of business from my understanding.
Misha always reps his homies 😎
Lol i see Misha hopping around in the comment section lol, thanks for the vid helped me try out new tones and nice profile picture
I think he must say about cabinet and speakers choosing and mic positioning also.
Nice job Misha. Saw you pull out that horizon pedal...so I thought I'd pop out and get one. £250 quid! They're having a laugh! I can get an amp off ebay for that.
Misha is cool guy
starting with everything at noon is actually helped me a lot. That tone sounds unreal on its own, but isn't that too much low end for a mix?
Dear Peavey,
Please make the Invective into a mini head.
Sincerely,
5150 and 6505MH owner who would buy it immediately
^what he said.
they did it
Too bad it’s made in China. You’ll spend in repair costs the first 2 years what the amp costs retail.
@@joshbarnes6759 or just treat your gear right..I've never had to have any gear I purchased brand new fixed
They did this year!
There are so many Metal sub genres TODAY that I am puzzled when they say "Modern". Prog Metal/ Tech/ Thrash... OK yeah you want a tight low end for those. But if you're playing Black Metal, Doom, Sludge or Power, those sub genres have modernized too and they all need different frequencies/settings than what Prog Metal uses.
The fun is, several years later, they still call it modern. It could also be called arrogant metal or poser metal as far as I care. Just write songs and stop worrying about genres or gear. There is a MAJOR distraction going on in the industry, people only worry about sounding the same as your favorite band with a RUclips channel and are completely occupied by the thought of having the exact same gear. All that while you should practice and try to get inspired to write a decent song. And a bunch of riffs with weird sounds isn’t a song btw.
This guy is such a dude!
Real talk, though, I have a Precision Drive, and it's astounding. The best way I can describe it is that it gave my tone sabertooth fangs and alligator jaw speed. 11/10 would recommend!
Knew his pedal was going to make an apearence XX
noisegates are mishas answer to everything :D
I like the idea of noise gates but I cant get the sustain I want using one.
"That's the answer, noisegates! :)" :D
I heart Mishap
Kabz Mishap Assuhr?
Kinda hard to sound bad with an amp like that though, I mean it was designed for music like this. Misha himself was one of the people who helped create it.
Misha excellent presentation of your setup and how to get your sound. I have just one question though, what watch are you wearing? Looks gorgeous!! Sorry if this is not related to your gear, but my eyes can't stop looking at your timepiece. Cheers!
No worries! It's a Nomos Ahoi Atlantik Datum, made in Germany and they have their own rather fantastic in-house movements!
Cooool! Thanks Misha, great time piece, in-house movements are all the rage now! Good to know that you have a very exquisite taste on nice timepieces! Nice to hear your new amp along with the Precision Drive too! Cheers!
If it chugs, it's good.
Thank you for your attention.
Not to mention basically all this is his signature gear *cough* sweetwater *cough*, he set sail for the precision drive, and he pretty much made a better bulb od, with a sweet noise gate. I am a fan.
The Fractal priest has gone tubes! And with a killer amp!!
When you look at the thumbnail of this video, the timestamp makes it look like his name is Misha Mansoop
the master of product placement...
This guy seems cool
how to really get the best tone
1. buy 5150
2. crank midst and highs above noon,
3. not enough highs use more
4. Lows are not your place
Or use a guitar with overwound parallel wired humbucker coils in the neck and a underwound dual slug bridge pickup... And some 1kohm pots
That amp is really bright sounding.
Alex Screeton what i thought. Blackstar id 150...
like a 5150 block letter, since it is a straight copy plus a ton of awesome features. In the mix the highs and lows will be cut anyway so im guessing this is more of a recording tone than a jamming tone.
Amazing the uses for Duct Tape since WWII. 😛
