And you can't go to tge store and pick something is really yours from many. When I was looking for an amp, i had to go to different cities to try different blackstars. No marshals 1, 5 and 20 to try, etc... And in this vid they have them all in the same place )))

My #1 tip would be don't be a loser and give up after a month because you can't shred like EVH yet. Too many people give up WAY too fast and it's really sad. If you want to get really good at something, it takes time, practice, and patience...LOTS of it!!

Ryan Haydon I’ve been playing just over 2 months. I always wanted to learn but I have painful hands from doing massage therapy for 15 years and also I have an autoimmune disease that causes swelling and pain in my wrists and fingers.
But I’ve become so into music. Mainly rock at the moment. This past year I went through something very serious and difficult and I would just listen to music all day at work. In my car. At home. Been to at least a dozen concerts in the last 6 months and I started to notice the energy from the band or the crowd and it is an amazing feeling when you are in the moment as everyone else is all together experiencing what’s happening together for that 2 hours or so and no one is worried about their problems or what’s happening outside of that venue. Your all just there together and in the same moment and I felt that energy this past summer and it was so powerful that a band and music has this much power. It’s therapeutic and healing and it literally saved me this year. Kept me busy. Happy. And because of this I’ve decided to learn guitar finally ( I suck so far lol) I held a guitar for the first time in my life in my first lesson just over 2 months ago and I immediately fell in love with it. And I was doing well learning fast with what my teacher started me on. But now getting involved in power chords I cannot get my fingers to work right. I have big hands and long fingers but I cannot get my fingers to stretch out to make a power chord. My teacher was literally forcing my fingers to go to the right spot but as soon as he let go the fingers just went where they wanted to lol. Ugh it’s so friggin frustrating and I try so hard to get them to work w me but they just will not go where I need them to. And also I tend to strum a bit hard. I’m working on that. I just wanna be able to sit and play an entire song even the slowest song ever made. Just to be able to do it and feel better about my progress. However I have had a flare up for 2 weeks so I wasn’t able to practice let alone go to my lessons because of the severe swelling in my fingers. It’s better now. But my last lesson I felt like an idiot because I fell behind and was playing like it was my first time again. I feel like I’m letting my teacher down or he thinks I am not taking it seriously when that’s not the case. I watch tons of RUclips videos for beginners. I bought a fender guitar kit so it came w the amp and a 3 month free online lesson gift card.
I’ve downloaded apps on my phone. I’ve been trying to get information and learn from wherever I can to fill in the space between my half hour lesson once a week which frankly is not nearly enough time for a lesson. But if I want an xtra lesson or do an hour obviously I have to pay for it and I already feel like it’s expensive for a half hour weekly lesson that I shouldn’t need to be looking elsewhere to learn things. I hope that makes sense. Don’t get me wrong my Teacher is awesome. He is a young man. Very sweet and patient w me. He sees I get frustrated when I can’t do something right so I think that’s why he is so patient and kind to me and we do get along and laugh and have fun. I love when I play and he starts playing along w me. And we sound cool together. Well he does not me so much. But it’s still fun. And that’s the point of playing in the first place.
Ok so I know this was really long and anyone reading it is probably asking what my point is. I guess I just would love any feedback or advice about getting better and not getting so frustrated with myself and also tricks maybe someone knows that I can do to get my fingers to stretch out to form a god damn power chord. God it takes 5 minutes to get one strum of a power chord how am I going to be able to play a whole song or just a simple riff if I can’t get my fingers to work right? Ugh HELP PLEASE! I do desperately want to be able to play and sound decent. I don’t care if it doesn’t sound good but at least decent so I feel like I don’t suck. Or suck less lol.
I apologize for the long message. I felt I should explain my experience as of yet so that any tips or advice would be beneficial if you know what exactly is my situation. That’s all.

My favourite tip has always been: Always leave your guitar in plain sight. Staring at it does magical things to you. You'll fantasise about playing your favourite songs, you'll lust over the faces of everyone that sees you doing something we all enjoy. been so much fun just playing The Simpsons theme. always gets a laugh. As the dude says, it's all about having fun.

The best way to learn guitar is to want to learn guitar from the bottom of your heart
If anyone is upset about a knock on their guitar, they should go and look at how much EXTRA they would have had to pay Fender to bash it for them at the factory!

I have some guitars that I've played for over 30 years. I had only a few incidents over the years at gigs but I had the spot repaired by a luthier immediately.
Most of my guitars look played but qualify as excellent condition. To each his own.
I think that an additional 13th tip should be: ..... have fun doing it !!....even if we suck ....like me... lol
Just play Smells Like Teen Spirit once a day and you'll feel awesome

Death grip... Coming from acoustic playing, that's the thing I have to work on.
This is not the most practical solution, but a scalloped fingerboard will really force you into a light touch. If you ever get a chance, you should try one.
I totally agree with Tip #8. I have only been playing for a month or so and I have developed more confidence in my playing by learning songs I like, especially the easier or slower ones.
I never knew Russel Brand was so good at playing the guitar and giving free advise what a talanted guy.
Tip: When practicing, record yourself on your cellphone. Wait about a day or so then give it a critical listen. You'll easily spot areas you need to improve.

About not selling your first guitar is true in a way, my first guitar was a crappy black stagg so I sold it after 1 1/2 years. My mom was really happy I was learning music theory and taking guitar lessons so she bought me a new MIM Fender Strat and a cheap acoustic guitar (my teacher told her I should play both, you should too many reasons for this...) It's the regretful feeling you'll have if you sell your "first" guitar, and the guitar I learned the most on was the Fender so in my mind it was my first guitar.
If your first guitar is a cheap one like less than $100 then you can sell it without feeling regretful (for the most part unless it had sentimental value to it...) when you get your first mid-range guitar ($300-$650) that's the one you won't want to sell (you'll heavily regret it in the future). I sold my black MIM fender strat to buy a gibson LP studio that I loved initially but after getting real good I hated the fact I sold my first guitar that I learned the most from (my mother bought it for me too making it more sentimental for me, just last month I finally bought the exact same model and I feel like I got my old guitar back it's odd...). I also preferred my Strat compared to my LP (easier playability...).
The only sad thing about buying this MIM fender strat for me was the fact that my mom has been in a big rut due to drugs, she's been getting arrested due to her driving while high. I told her I bought my old guitar back and she can't even recall that I had that guitar nor that she ever bought it for me. So, that guitar was like a memory of my old mom the sweet, loving, and awesome mother I used to know. Now she's the dark side of that old memory of my mother, it sucks it really sucks

I am only commenting because this is a trip....I sold my first real guitar. A black MIM strat and then picked up a Gibson LP studio which I hated and sold like a week later. And my mother has also become a shell of her former self because of prescription drug abuse. This is really weird. Any how glad you are still playing and so am I. It’s cathartic for me.

Hey there. I’m a recovering drug addict and I understand what you’re going through. I lost my pops to alcohol and drugs in 1999 when I was 18. I hadn’t seen him since I was 13. Drugs tear apart families and do nothing but harm. I feel for you. Keep your head up and keep playing guitar. My prayers are with you. I too lost my first guitar when I was in the Army. I pawned it to go to Korea. It was a 1997 Ibanez JS in Hot Rod Red. That guitar could almost pay for my car now. Lol. My momma bought me that guitar as well. Maybe one day you’ll be able to play sweet music for your mom. 😉

You can trick yourself into speeding up fast sections or solos by practicing slowly and THEN incrementally ramping up your speed by playing with a metronome, as he mentioned, but every time you reach a point you can play something comfortably, increase the BPM of the metronome by 12. You slowly increase your speed without being overwhelmed by the new change of pace, and because you've mastered the slow playing, it becomes a lot easier to just play a bit faster.

Great video... The avoidance of the death grip is such an important tip.. Hand/finger fatigue is an issue for many of us.

Never sell your first guitar...100% truth in that. If you ever learn anything on it, if you take to it AT ALL, never sell it. You’ll regret it forever and/or wind up searching for that same kind of guitar again down the road. I tell everyone that. And play songs you like to learn faster. I’ll also add, buy a guitar that makes you want to pick it up when you look at it if possible. Great advice Dagan!

Same here. I've found just practising scales etc and bei g really conscious of pressing as light as necessary on the strings to get a clear sound helpful. Even just five minutes everyday of a scale for a week... And not playing songs etc to avoid the temptation of playing (and pressing) hard... It helped massively... Good luck!

2003 my mom bought me a purple epiphone sg, I now own a American strat. I still miss my sg. And will always have love for my 1st ax epiphone sg
also play with confidence even if you do not master what you are practicing just hit them strings do not i repeat DO NOT hold yourself back , i was guilty of this myself and when i started playing with confidence it all became mutch easier .

Agree with all of these - especially the 'Death Grip'... I got my first guitar when I was 15... I'm now 38... And I'm trying to break that habit! Light touch is all you need... Way harder to break a bad habit than to learn good ones from the start!!!
The death grip can sometimes be attributed to bad setup/string action, get your guitar set up properly and you'll find you won't have to push down as hard or death grip it, that was the case for me 🙂
tip number 5 is oh so true. even god-Satriani has made a mistake with his song Crushing Day. He composed it by sitting down, he has to sit down when he do it live.
We all developed bad habits but the most important thing is that you still get a kick out of it! I'm 52 but picking my guitar up is one of the most pleasurable things I do, it's sad I know 🤗😂

6:35 Once you play standing you'll nerver want to sit! You can learn the song sitting but then you should stand and keep practicing that way - standing is expressive and fun. Gamechanger.
All I’d add is ten minutes a day is better than 2or 3 hours on Saturday.
Plus if you say I’m going to play ten minutes every day often the ten you said you’ll do becomes 1/2 to an hour.
Oh yes, I'm also guilty of those "10 minutes that turned 40". Anyway, as you say, touching the guitar everyday is the key

On the comfort zone thing... Usually play old school (boomer rock) and jazz, but recently got into metal and am loving the new experience. Odd how much metal and jazz can boost the improvement in the other style.

I like that these tips are different from most people’s.
I (re)started from scratch 14 months ago. My top tips would be, accept that progress is gradual and mostly depends on practice. So like Dagan says, do your 20 mins+ every day if you possibly can.
Also, practice SLOW but CORRECT, not FAST and MESSY. Otherwise you are just practicing playing messily. Once you can play something right slowly, you can speed it up gradually.
And keep your guitar where you can see it. Then every time you walk past it, pick it up and have a noodle

I have watched many of these videos, but i was hesitant on watching this one cause, though i have some bad habbits, i dont consider myself a beginner. Honestly though, after watching this, i really want to just pick up my guitar and think more people just starting or not should watch this one and learn these easy steps. Great content!

I gave away my first guitar I learnt on, felt really good at the time ( gave it away to a young family member) now, I miss it real bad. I hope they play and appreciate it as much as I did.
the best tip that I have was given to me by my guitar teacher when I was in college and I give it to all my students, so here it is take it or leave it. "The difference between a professional and an amateur is simple, An amateur will practice till they can play it right, a professional will practice till they can't play it wrong". Practicing something that makes you excited will foster more progress and motivation to reach the next level.
This is probably my favorite beginner tips video and I’ve seen a lot. All it comes down to is having fun
