ELO always reminds me of being on vacation. My Mom had ELO Greatest Hits on cassette. We were up in Michigan on vacation and brought a boom box to the beach for the day. Mom popped in ELO while she relaxed on the lounge chair and the rest of us played in the sand. The first side of the tape finished and when she went to flip it, the eject button was jammed. We had to listen to side 1 over and over the whole day at the beach.

Amber hit the nail on the head. The key word is Orchestra. ELO uses everything in the orchestra to make music. Not many groups can do it this good. Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Queen, Beatles. Maybe 1 or 2 others here and there, but that’s about it. Making rock music without featuring guitars is at least unique. Gotta love it! Much love ❤️

"Turn To Stone", was described by Donald A. Guarisco as "a good example of Electric Light Orchestra's skill for mixing string-laden pop hooks with driving rock and roll", praising the "array of swirling string lines that dart in and out of the mix and some dazzling falsetto harmonies that interact with Lynne's lead vocal in call and response style". This song garnered Jeff Lynne a BMI (Broadcast Music Inc) Million-Air certificate for having one million airplays. They took their name because they combined electric rock instruments with orchestral instruments. "Light Orchestras" were small orchestras popular in England in the '60s.

When I was in what must have been the equivalent the 8th or 9th grade? in about 1978 one of our music teachers put Turn to Stone on followed by reggae band Steel Pulse to demonstrate the difference between a more straight rock style of drumming and the variation found in the latter's percussive style. Turn to Stone was a UK hit at the late end of 1977 and a favourite ELO song of one of my closest friends at school. Great song.

I saw the tour for this album and it was incredible. Their stage was a giant flying saucer motif where the opening band had to have a separate stage to perform on and then be taken down so E.L.O. could do their show. I'm gonna say it again guys. I have been requesting and waiting on two reactions from you two for several months now. If you guys read the comments then you know what they are. But to recap-by them is "El Dorado (overture) and Can't Get It Out Of My Head". "Can't Get It Out Of My Head" was a hit on it's own but these two go right into each other and it's best to do them that way. It's only a couple of minutes longer and the overture is great, you'll love it.. A more rockin' song by them is "Poker". A more straight ahead rock tune. Of course the other song I want is "Ice Cream Man" by Van Halen. I'm gonna keep saying them until you do them.

This was the first music I purchased with my hard-earned money when I was a teenager. After hearing "Telephone Line" I couldn't wait to purchase this 45 from the store. I still love this song to this day. Great memories of my youth with this classic ELO song. Ironically "Star Wars" came about the same time, so they are intertwined in my mind for eternity.

They were one of the first bands to incorporate synthesizers and it not sound cheesy. They had normal Rock n roll instruments but added in the synthesizer sound that could create and expound any musical instrument. Def legends...this to me is one of their best songs and it came out during a time that disco was running the show so it was so refreshing honestly. I was in 8 th grade at the time this album came out and I was a rocker and was very resentful that disco ruled the airwaves at that time.

Out of the blue, an album that has the most amazing artwork (outer cover and inner cover) and amazing music to match. If I had to take only one ELO album to play for the rest of my life (and I have them all) it would be difficult but it would be this album, every track is a gem. Turn to stone, the first track on this album shoots you off to space and from there it just keeps getting better and better. It was this very single that got me in to Electric Light Orchestra way back in 1977. A very good year for music.

Wow, you guys still finding gems.
The Beatles had a baby and they named it ELO! Jeff Lynne is is as big as music itself!!! Dig in and you will find. The way he brought Roy Orbison back to significants is just one of his accomplishments. Traveling willburys, heartbreakers, beach boys the Beatles all owe him. Legend.

When I was a kid, (1978) my big brother worked at the place we went on summer hols to in North Yorkshire, they had a small theatre and had that year just fitted a new top line stereo system. My brother bought out of the blue in the local town and put this on one afternoon. It blew me away, possibly cause first time I’d heard anything in proper stereo and loud but god this track to this day as it builds makes the hairs on my neck stand up.

ELO is so unique. I always loved their music. Mr Blue Sky is my fav of their songs. Also Livin Thing, Telephone Line, Rockaria, All Over the World. And this one. It’s like they picked up where the Beatles left off and took it in their own direction. I love their rock band cello section. That’s one of my fav instruments. So I love how ELO incorporated that in their sound so beautifully

This was the song that introduced me to ELO back in 77 or 78 I believe. I was hooked by the bright sound, positive vibes and many different instruments that weren't what I thought a rock group would use. Also, I was so impressed by their vocals. I must have listened to this one song two dozen times that first day I heard it. So glad you guys enjoyed it! Peace!

I'm surprised ELO never had a number 1 hit on the USA pop charts. They had so many great songs on the radio when I was a teen in the 1970s. They had excellent hits in the UK as well. Strong Albums was another reason I loved them, and good production as well. Evil Woman, Roll Over Beethoven (early on), Don't Let Me Down, Mr. Blue Sky, and so many more. Their British predecessor was the Move.
