Hi Elizabeth. I just love your enthusiasm and positive energy. Another couple of ELO songs to add to your ‘happy playlist’ could be, ‘Tightropes’ and ‘Livin’ Thing’. Both wonderful tracks from their album, ‘A New World Record’. I’ve just discovered your channel and really enjoying your analysis of such diverse music. ☺️
Always love your reviews and reactions. Really enjoy the way you mix your surprise with analytical appreciation for what you're hearing. Being cute as hell dont hurt lol. Seriously though, you manage to convey the fun and joy many of us experience every time we listen to these tunes. If anyone ever needed protection against cynicism, its you. Keep on keeping on lady.
I’m glad to see you appreciate all the nuances of what ELO has to offer. I’d strongly recommend you checking out their song “Rockaria”. It is 100% up your alley. Thanks for reinvigorating my love of many songs I haven’t heard in ages!!
My favorite song by one of my favorite bands!!! I couldn't wait until the 9:37 moment of the video to see your reaction to the super-fast portion of the song!
I absolutely love ELO and the works of Jeff Lynne. You can hear it in the music of Tom Petty, George Harrison and his work in the Traveling Wiburys. The layers of music going on is incredible with vocals and the orchestra. It’s fun to see Elizabeth’s excitement to listen to everything going on that most of us miss. She has the trained ear and background to recognize all this stuff. Neat learning what goes into quality and popular music!
"Sweet Talkin' Woman" was another single, but I really liked the interplay and cadence of Jeff's vocals with the multitracked chorus (which I think is also him) on "Sweet is the Night." The whole Concerto for a Rainy Day side is tip-top (they kicked off the sets of their last tours with "Standin' in the Rain"), but my sentimental childhood favorite is "Jungle." So fun, and a lovely sentiment -- "Wonderous is our great blue ship that sails around the mighty sun and joy to everyone that rides along."
Yes, I am pretty sure that all the vocals are Jeff multitracked. There's a good video doc on YT somewhere showing him recording stuff at home. Simply amazing. I believe he remade a lot of the early works because he was dissatisfied with the original production. Sounded pretty much perfect to me the first time around 🙂
@@RogerBarraud Kelly Groucutt was also on backing vocals. Listen to anything released before Face the Music and you won't find him anywhere because he hadn't yet replaced Mike du Albuquerque on bass. Groucutt's voice is, in my mind, essential to ELO's iconic sound.
Sweet Talkin’ Woman, Night In The City, Starlight and Wild West Hero are all brilliant tracks too Elizabeth - but listening to the entire double album back to back sounds like a far better idea 😉
I had a very dark heart earlier. 🖤 but now after seeing 2 Facebook posts, and this angel listening to one of my favorite songs, there is light in my heart again. Thank you for what you do.
"Concerto for a Rainy Day" is on this album actually. It is the 4 songs on Side 3. Standing in the Rain, Big Wheels, Summer and Lightning, and Mr. Blue Sky. =)
i know im late as heck but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND their song The Diary Of Horace Wimp. the *storytelling* in it agh and the end allllways sends me in a giddy tizzy so much i replay it over and over and over again. ♥❤
For Elizabeth especially....I can't over-recommend 'Rockaria' by ELO. I mean, it'd be awesome, especially if Elizabeth were to sing along with the aria bits :)
At the start of the vocal stave of the sheet music for Rockaria it states in brackets "(Fake-it)". I suppose one could fake it in English, Italian or German.
While it is not as consistently great as New World Record (IMHO), there are so many great tracks on this album. I'm most partial to the five songs that start with Stepping Out, followed by their "Concerto for a Rainy Day" which includes Standing in the Rain, Big Wheels, Summer and Lightning, and Mr. Blue Sky. So emotionally satisfying. Still gives me chills 46 years after first hearing it.
I agree that "A New World Record" is ELO's most consistently great album, and agree on "Concerto for a Rainy Day" as a highlight of "Out of the Blue". For an "upbeat" sounding song from "Out of the Blue," the single "Sweet Talkin' Woman" is a good one, though as with "Turn to Stone" the lyrics are also not that upbeat.
100% My suggestion for one more song to cover would be Standing in the Rain, although, to be honest, this album is close to perfection (in my opinion) so she could choose anything and it would be a great choice - however, Standing in the Rain is a perfect contrast to Mr. Blue Sky, seems like a great way to wrap up coverage of the album.
I would like to see her reaction to the four song arc of Concerto for a Rainy Day (Standing in the Rain through Mr Blue Sky). I'm interested in how the whole arc would effect her appreciation for Blue Sky (ie, how much more awesome she'll find it . . . ).
I am captivated by your reaction.... it's awesome because you are natural and engaging. You help listeners appreciate deeper into ELO's already fantastic performance. Ty.
Grew up listening to ELO and have never stopped... Listening to, not growing up Obviously...superb talent in Jeff Lynne ,your reaction Respectful and delightful How many bands can you sing along to and instantly know the words whilst recalling happy memories over the years ,? Not many! ELO are one, cheers
You can definitely hear the Beatles influence and inspiration in their music and specifically John Lennon's vocals. Fittingly, John Lennon became a Jeff Lynne fan.
@@robertanderson2355 John once said ELO is what The Beatles would have become if they had stayed together. He also described Showdown as "a mix of Heard It Through The Grapevine by Marvin Gaye and Lightening Strikes by Lou Christie with a little Walrus underneath" (refering to his own song I Am The Walrus). He nailed it. It's so interesting to listen to people who really love and understand music.
I know how much you loved Mr. Blue Sky. It is the finale song on the "Concerto for a Rainy Day" suite on "Out of the Blue. Would love to see you react to the entire suite; that and I am sure many other fans would as well!
It is comprised of all four songs on the third side of “Out of the Blue” the last being Mr. Blue Sky. It was inspired by the terrible weather Jeff encountered in the Alps when he sat down to write the songs for the album. When the sun finally appeared it inspired Mr. Blue Sky.
If Elizabeth is going to review /listen to one more song off the album (before playing the whole thing) then Wild West Hero has got to be the one. Not necessarily the next best track, but definitely one of Jeff Lynne's finest vocal performances.
They were AMAZING live!!!!! The violinist ( Mick Kaminski) would saw thru his bowstrings while in a backbend, and a stage would run out and hand him another one!
@@bennyandersen742 - metal and classical are my jam!! And let me just throw out the name Tony Iommi as a Lynne-level talent for coming up with killer riffs. But Lynne's sense of harmony is baroque-like in its depth in my opinion.
I traveled from Houston to Ohio a few years ago to watch Lynne. I was probably 32 at the time and one of the youngest in the crowd. It’s unfortunate for such timeless music, but the older crowd was so into each and every song. It was absolutely wonderful!!! And George Harrison’s son opened!!
Totally. ELO was my mom's favorite band as a teenager in the 70's and she passed that love on to me. It's especially unfortunate for ELO that not many younger people are aware of them, since so many of the production techniques they used were so innovative and foreshadowed many aspects of modern music that are taken for granted nowadays - because of those similar aspects, i'm sure younger people would have an easy time getting into it if they gave it a chance (or even knew TO give it a chance)
It makes me happy to see how deeply you enjoy music because I often feel the same way. And it’s a delight to see you loving ELO and being able to give voice to things that I feel when listening to ELO but don’t have the words to explain. So thank you! And all the best.
I would love her to do their live version of Roll Over Beethoven. That always went down well when I've seen them live. I think she would get a kick out of the intro. Best version ever.
I remember hearing ELO the first time on vinyl back in the 70's. My mom had a wide array of music and I always liked the sound of their music. As I've gotten older I appreciate people like Jeff Lynn a whole lot more. Such bands as this are examples of true musical creation and dedication to music itself. I love watching you react to music, and feel it. Thank you for being who you are. You are a true gift to people that enjoy music.
I was mesmerized when I saw ELO in concert in the mid 70s. I couldn't decide which instrument to focus on! Strings, guitar, bass, drums, vocals. All so wonderful!
Definitely Rockaria! from A New World Record and Eldorado Overture/Can't Get It Out Of My Head from Eldorado. The Eldorado album is a concept album that should be listened to in its entirety.
ELO always put so much work into their music with so many subtle and interesting variations. You would listen over and over and hear something new you didn't notice the first 20 times 😂 . It is so great watch and hear someone who is so knowledgeable in such things appreciate and analyze it (for the first time amazingly) so many years later.
The entire album is amazing! I would echo others to try listening to “Concerto for a Rainy Day” in its entirety. But “Sweet Talkin’ Woman,” “Steppin’ Out,” and “Sweet is the Night” are all great.
The whole thing in headphones!!!But The Whale in headphones is mind blowing!!!The beginning swirling motion of the synthesizer is unreal in headphones!!!
Well, in order to facilitate you listening to the rest of this great album as fast as possible, if you want one more ‘Out of the Blue’ song recommendation, I’d go with Jungle! It’s another very upbeat number, and my personal absolute favourite ELO song ever. I’m biased though - I can remember bouncing around the kitchen to it when I was very small as my Dad was doing the dishes 😂 For ELO’s wider catalogue, I’ll throw out some potential curveballs - ‘Eldorado’ has possibly the most dramatic vocal performance Jeff Lynne has ever done, I’ve seen people recommend ‘Rockaria’ and I can second that - it’s a fun and unique track that could technically be called a rock opera and anything off Time would be a treat but I’d put in for ‘The Bouncer’, a bonus track that finishes with some bombast and swing! But irregardless of what you choose, ELO reactions are always a treat and with Out of the Blue you can’t go wrong, a double-album of golden tracks - thanks for the analysis of its stunning opener and I can’t wait for the next one!
From this album definitely the whole "Concerto for a rainy day" even if you have listened to the biggest hit Mr Blue Sky already. It's a full set of intertwining four songs. Jeff hasn't been the most cheerful composer of upbeat songs (apart from a handful of 50's style rock'n'roll tracks like Do Ya, Beethoven, Don't bring me down) but instead a fantastic writer and singer of sad, melancholic songs of loneliness and longing. I recommend a couple of earlier masterpieces as well if you enjoy the sad parts as well: Eldorado + Finale (1974), Dreaming of 4000 (1973) and 10358 Overture (1971 and the first ever song done by ELO, they still perform this song live!).
Strongly recommend "Concerto for a Rainy Day", which is a run of four songs on this album. The ending is wonderfully bitter-sweet beautiful, but you need the lead-up - so the whole thing is a must. Songs are: "Standin' in the Rain", "Big Wheels", "Summer and Lightning" and finally "Mr. Blue Sky".
Jeff Lynne is a musical genious. He has enriched the music of so many other musicians too. I love that album and listen to it in its entirety atleast once a week in my garage as I putter around with my projects. Thank you for bringing us more ELO!!!

Check out the Mary Fahl version
I think my fave ELO song is Twilight, it always makes me feel like I'm going on a space adventure, while Ticket to the Moon still makes me cry. They're all just so amazing! ❤
Oh wow so good, the unresolved/plagal cadence in the chorus is heartbreaking “away from me” just can’t get enough Jeff Lynne.
Time is a great album and its reputation has only improved over the years.
Elizabeth's Reactions listening to this are exactly how i've felt listening to E.L.O. for the last 40 years or so,Every track is a total eargasm!!
The album HAS TO BE listened to end to end. Especially A Concerto for A Rainy Day. A masterpiece of an album. I’ve had it on vinyl, cassette, CD and now downloaded. It’s my go to album. ❤❤❤❤love ❤❤❤❤❤
Concerto For A Rainy Day - all 4 songs - absolute masterpiece!
Wild West Hero is my absolute favourite track from this album but it is a work of art as a whole piece. I don’t know how you resisted so long! 😂
Standing in the rain with headphones is a must‼️‼️
There has been no band which do what ELO have done. They’re unique and quite brilliant!
One Summer Dream is a beautiful, evocative ELO track with a lovely melodic vocal line and some great choral work at the end.
Loved that one in the 2001 comeback concert in the US. Great song.
Jeff Lynne is a master of his craft. I am grateful to have had his music to get me through my teenage years.
The yearning of the vocal vs the driving synth and tempo are just breathtaking.
ELO was the first concert I attended. It was 1978 and I've been hooked ever since. 60 yrs old and still rock to ELO.
Me too, my first concert, I saw them in Denver at the "Big Mac" (RIP) Arena. I'm 59.
I saw them in Roanoke VA
I’m glad to see you appreciate all the nuances of what ELO has to offer. I’d strongly recommend you checking out their song “Rockaria”. It is 100% up your alley. Thanks for reinvigorating my love of many songs I haven’t heard in ages!!
Mrs. Zharoff is going to have a BALL with this song, and I have a feeling this will be a regular for her playlist after this.
ELO is a band that makes magic with its music. Greetings from Argentina
I just mentioned "Jungle" in my comment! Thank you!
yeah, Jungle!
Love Wild West Hero🤠❤
This is Jeff's masterpiece
I had a very dark heart earlier. 🖤 but now after seeing 2 Facebook posts, and this angel listening to one of my favorite songs, there is light in my heart again. Thank you for what you do.
You’re welcome.
The live version of this that is on their channel is also amazing. Jeff's still got it even all these years later.
Been bouncing and giggling to ELO since I was a youngster. I really appreciate how their music can transport you into a different place.✌️
"Concerto for a Rainy Day" is one of my favorites from this album. Be warned, it's about 19 minutes long, but well worth the listen.
"Concerto for a Rainy Day" is on this album actually. It is the 4 songs on Side 3. Standing in the Rain, Big Wheels, Summer and Lightning, and Mr. Blue Sky. =)
Summer and Lightning is so under appreciated.
@@paulweiss3818 agree. It's my favorite song on the entire album.
i know im late as heck but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND their song The Diary Of Horace Wimp. the *storytelling* in it agh and the end allllways sends me in a giddy tizzy so much i replay it over and over and over again. ♥❤
Holy crap. ELO and The Beatles have been my happy place for decades. Loved this. :)
For Elizabeth especially....I can't over-recommend 'Rockaria' by ELO. I mean, it'd be awesome, especially if Elizabeth were to sing along with the aria bits :)
Oh yes.
Yes! I just made the same suggestion on a prev ELO song she covered. She would really get a kick out of Rockaria!, considering her profession.
At the start of the vocal stave of the sheet music for Rockaria it states in brackets "(Fake-it)".
I suppose one could fake it in English, Italian or German.
Right up her alley! Definitely a must watch for her.
Hopefully she sees this suggestion.
Same here brother
I generally agree with you, but even the not so great songs on "Out of the Blue" are at least very good.
I would like to see her reaction to the four song arc of Concerto for a Rainy Day (Standing in the Rain through Mr Blue Sky). I'm interested in how the whole arc would effect her appreciation for Blue Sky (ie, how much more awesome she'll find it . . . ).
Wild West Hero is one of my favorites from that albumn. Summer and Lightning is also a contender.
Agreed,Wild west hero ,is a great song ,love the section when the guitar and piano comes in!
@@davidsmith6976 I was a little surprised to find a video - ruclips.net/video/VwsDU00pqFs/видео.html
I am captivated by your reaction.... it's awesome because you are natural and engaging. You help listeners appreciate deeper into ELO's already fantastic performance. Ty.
Grew up listening to ELO and have never stopped...
Listening to, not growing up
Obviously...superb talent in
Jeff Lynne ,your reaction
Respectful and delightful
How many bands can you sing along to and instantly know the words whilst recalling happy memories over the years ,? Not many! ELO are one, cheers
Jeff was largely inspired by the Beatles, so that dissonant sweep at the end was probably inspired by the one in the Beatles A Day In the Life.
I would say that is an understatement, he was literally obsessed with them.
But became better
You can definitely hear the Beatles influence and inspiration in their music and specifically John Lennon's vocals. Fittingly, John Lennon became a Jeff Lynne fan.
@@robertanderson2355 John once said ELO is what The Beatles would have become if they had stayed together. He also described Showdown as "a mix of Heard It Through The Grapevine by Marvin Gaye and Lightening Strikes by Lou Christie with a little Walrus underneath" (refering to his own song I Am The Walrus). He nailed it. It's so interesting to listen to people who really love and understand music.
I mean, the man produced and plays guitar on "Free as a Bird..."
I know how much you loved Mr. Blue Sky. It is the finale song on the "Concerto for a Rainy Day" suite on "Out of the Blue. Would love to see you react to the entire suite; that and I am sure many other fans would as well!
I totally agree!
PLEASE REACT TO THE ENTIRE "CONCERTO FOR A RAINY DAY!"
Such a great piece of music.
It is comprised of all four songs on the third side of “Out of the Blue” the last being Mr. Blue Sky. It was inspired by the terrible weather Jeff encountered in the Alps when he sat down to write the songs for the album. When the sun finally appeared it inspired Mr. Blue Sky.
@@tomdiodati5028 I hope you are telling Elizabeth that, not me. I already knew. Lol. Was too lazy to list all of the songs.
The harmonies on Wild West Hero are amazing. Worth a listen.
Kelley Groucutt (RIP) is key there!
If Elizabeth is going to review /listen to one more song off the album (before playing the whole thing) then Wild West Hero has got to be the one. Not necessarily the next best track, but definitely one of Jeff Lynne's finest vocal performances.
They’re such a unique combination of Rock, Disco, and Orchestral. Freaking amazing!
They were AMAZING live!!!!! The violinist ( Mick Kaminski) would saw thru his bowstrings while in a backbend, and a stage would run out and hand him another one!
Thank you for noticing ELO's artistry of blending classic Blues, Call and Response, with orchestral instrumentation; simply a gift.
Jeff Lynn is an absolutely masterful composer.
Or should we say genius, absolutely amazing
Genius is a strong word but absolutely the right one to describe Jeff Lynne
@@digital-classics yes, I am mostly on the heavy metal side of music, but if I was to "pick" a musician out as an genius, it would be him
@@bennyandersen742 - metal and classical are my jam!! And let me just throw out the name Tony Iommi as a Lynne-level talent for coming up with killer riffs. But Lynne's sense of harmony is baroque-like in its depth in my opinion.
@@digital-classics Yes, I agree, still Lynne seems to master the whole musical spectrum. But always difficult to compare these masters of their arts.
I saw him in Houston last(?) year, and he's back in town next week or so. :)
“Mr. Blue Sky” just brightens up my day.
Yes
She should also check out the mv of Turn to Stone - what they do with the cellos, running across the stage with them and spinning them is a delight.
That is my absolute favorite version of that song. So many bands have covered it over the years, but ELO does it the best!
"The Showdown" is my absolute favorite. It's off a different album if you decide to check it out. I love ELO, they don't miss.
Always makes me think of the movie Kingpin.
@@Man-vs-Metal Roy Munson approves this message !
You might consider ELO's Rockaria! It's about an opera singer discovering rock music. They even brought in a lady to sing the operatic parts.
Yes, a brilliant song which is certainly worth exploring in detail
I second this! I want Liz to hear ELO and opera. 😉
I want to hear Elizabeth do the part!
@@digibirder I'll second that
Definitely Rockaria! from A New World Record and Eldorado Overture/Can't Get It Out Of My Head from Eldorado.
Second for "Sweet Talkin' Woman".
It has plenty of playful variations that I think she would enjoy.
Sweet is the Night is up there as perhaps my favourite. Wild West Hero as well.
Across The Border blows me away too
The whole thing in headphones!!!But The Whale in headphones is mind blowing!!!The beginning swirling motion of the synthesizer is unreal in headphones!!!
It’s so cool to see the music that I enjoyed as a teenager getting the appreciation that it deserves. ELO is pure musical genius.
Love it another great review ❤
Well, in order to facilitate you listening to the rest of this great album as fast as possible, if you want one more ‘Out of the Blue’ song recommendation, I’d go with Jungle! It’s another very upbeat number, and my personal absolute favourite ELO song ever. I’m biased though - I can remember bouncing around the kitchen to it when I was very small as my Dad was doing the dishes 😂
For ELO’s wider catalogue, I’ll throw out some potential curveballs - ‘Eldorado’ has possibly the most dramatic vocal performance Jeff Lynne has ever done, I’ve seen people recommend ‘Rockaria’ and I can second that - it’s a fun and unique track that could technically be called a rock opera and anything off Time would be a treat but I’d put in for ‘The Bouncer’, a bonus track that finishes with some bombast and swing!
Reading the title, I thought it was a song I haven't heard, but I recognized it as soon as it started playing. Ahh, nostalgia.
I have listened to ELO since the 70’s and hear something new every time I listen.
Can't understand why Jeff hasn't been knighted. He's brought great joy into millions of lives. Hurry up Charlie,/parliament it's way overdue.
Blue Sky".
SHe did already Mr. Blue Sky
Still this is worth it. Totally.
"Sweet Talkin' Woman" was my favorite from this album but all there songs are timeless!
'Sweet Talking Woman' really hits the spot for me and for rich orchestral swells, 'Wild West Hero' is filled to the brim.
Jeff Lynne is a musical genious. He has enriched the music of so many other musicians too. I love that album and listen to it in its entirety atleast once a week in my garage as I putter around with my projects. Thank you for bringing us more ELO!!!
Love your enthusiasm for music Elizabeth. Your facial expressions and giddiness are joy to watch.
With ELO's mix of rock and violin, it will do everything but Turn Elizabeth to Stone.
Delete this.
Heavens forbid that would happen! We need her!😂
This comment made me think of something lude and possibly toxic that makes me laugh. I'll spare you for this reason but I think I can give the punchline. Hard as stones that could cut glass.
