I agree that "A New World Record" is ELO's most consistently great album, and agree on "Concerto for a Rainy Day" as a highlight of "Out of the Blue". "Sweet Talkin' Woman" was another single, but I really liked the interplay and cadence of Jeff's vocals with the multitracked chorus (which I think is also him) on "Sweet is the Night." The whole Concerto for a Rainy Day side is tip-top (they kicked off the sets of their last tours with "Standin' in the Rain"), but my sentimental childhood favorite is "Jungle." Michael Jackson may be the King of Pop, but Jeff Lynne is the Einstein - the greatest genius pop music has ever seen.
If you like it, feel free to use it. I feel he's important enough to deserve some evangelists, given how apparently under-appreciated he his (as someone else here has pointed out, only recently inducted into the songwriters hall of fame - on the 5th ballot?!?) Even aside from his amazing and prolific songwriting, great for all the reasons you listed, his production work with ELO and others was astoundingly innovative, foreshadowing many aspects of modern music that are taken for granted.

Mr Blue sky was scientifically proven to be the most uplifting pop song ever. I was so happy to see you doing this song. ELO discovery was my first rock album. I was just starting to play the sax, and their layered harmonies grabbed me. It's like dinosauric Depeche Mode. In my opinion "The Diary of Horace Whimp" is their most underrated song. I traveled from Houston to Ohio a few years ago to watch Lynne. I was probably 32 at the time and one of the youngest in the crowd. It’s unfortunate for such timeless music, but the older crowd was so into each and every song.

Totally. ELO was my mom's favorite band as a teenager in the 70's and she passed that love on to me. It's especially unfortunate for ELO that not many younger people are aware of them, since so many of the production techniques they used were so innovative and foreshadowed many aspects of modern music that are taken for granted nowadays - because of those similar aspects, i'm sure younger people would have an easy time getting into it if they gave it a chance (or even knew TO give it a chance)

From this album definitely the whole "Concerto for a rainy day" even if you have listened to the biggest hit Mr Blue Sky already. It's a full set of intertwining four songs. Jeff hasn't been the most cheerful composer of upbeat songs (apart from a handful of 50's style rock'n'roll tracks like Do Ya, Beethoven, Don't bring me down) but instead a fantastic writer and singer of sad, melancholic songs of loneliness and longing.
I recommend a couple of earlier masterpieces as well if you enjoy the sad parts as well: Eldorado + Finale (1974), Dreaming of 4000 (1973) and 10358 Overture (1971 and the first ever song done by ELO, they still perform this song live!).

Strongly recommend "Concerto for a Rainy Day", which is a run of four songs on this album. The ending is wonderfully bitter-sweet beautiful, but you need the lead-up - so the whole thing is a must.
Songs are: "Standin' in the Rain", "Big Wheels", "Summer and Lightning" and finally "Mr. Blue Sky".

Break out the good headphones and listen closely as there is so much going on. Also, remember that this was recorded in the mid-1970's and that makes Jeff's recording wizardry stand out even more. The pace and rhythm of this song is like a gallop - like someone up on a horse riding hard from town to town in search of their loved one, yearning for them and can't wait to see them again. The chorus is like slowing down to take a closer look, to search the crowds.
Edit: On that note, you asked about our "favorite song" on the album. For me, it's "Wild West Hero"... so downright funky, but it's also about living our dreams, finding happiness and meaning in our life. Well, in order to facilitate you listening to the rest of this great album as fast as possible, if you want one more ‘Out of the Blue’ song recommendation, I’d go with Jungle! It’s another very upbeat number, and my personal absolute favourite ELO song ever. I’m biased though - I can remember bouncing around the kitchen to it when I was very small as my Dad was doing the dishes 😂
For ELO’s wider catalogue, I’ll throw out some potential curveballs - ‘Eldorado’ has possibly the most dramatic vocal performance Jeff Lynne has ever done, I’ve seen people recommend ‘Rockaria’ and I can second that - it’s a fun and unique track that could technically be called a rock opera and anything off Time would be a treat but I’d put in for ‘The Bouncer’, a bonus track that finishes with some bombast and swing!
But irregardless of what you choose, ELO reactions are always a treat and with Out of the Blue you can’t go wrong, a double-album of golden tracks - thanks for the analysis of its stunning opener and I can’t wait for the next one!

Your observation that there is a sad longing element to this song hits home! I've always thought of this as a snappy fun song. UNTIL I met someone who suffered a profound loss (her husband of many years). She shared that the feeling of being paralyzed by grief while the world rushes by - a whirlwind of activity you can't latch onto. She was longing for his return and kept feeling his presence in empty rooms (chilling to me). Once I listened from that perspective, I can't forget her torment whenever I hear this song.

If I were to recommend an ELO album to listen to from beginning to end, I would do A New World Record. From 1976. One of those albums that is excellent the whole way through. Telephone Line and Livin' Thing are the best known songs. Do Ya is a song from Jeff Lynne's band in the late 60's, The Move. I think you'll like Rockaria and Shangri-la. As you might expect, there is so much emotion in the musical structures all over this album. It's full of delicious bittersweetness.

This is such a great song & a great opener for this epic album, it leaves you wanting more & you're not disappointed, in fact, I've never known or heard anyone crticise this album, it's impossible to do so because it's so good. Jeff wrote all 14 songs in 17 days, that has to be a record. You asked for us to recommend other songs, a tough one, but, for me, I'd have to choose "Across the border". When I first bought the album many years ago, I played it to death, I learnt every word to every song & sang every note & harmony (not particularly well), but, I always got caught out by the line, "I gotta move down the line" from (Across the border),I just kept getting it wrong, I'm sure you'll have no problem. I loved your analysis of T T Stone, the surprise on your face as the song develops is priceless. Isn't it strange, how enjoyable it is to see someone enjoy the music you yourself enjoy, I love that?

I couldn't agree more on your commentary. This song has been stuck on repeat now for weeks on end . The sweeping and diving falsetto harmonies (as well as main vocals) and string section create such a powerfull and complex mix of emotions. Feelings that swell up in me until my eyes well up with authentic and strange unexpectic tears. Jeff Lynne's next-level musical spellcraft, totally possess my heart and emotions and (joyfully) dance them around, as I watch helplessly. It truely feels like storybook magic.
I first fell for E.L.O. as a teenager when a friend played for me the "Eldorado Overture" (that segues into "Can't Get It Out of My Head", and recalled listening to it with his mom one morning, watching together as the sun rose beautifully on the lake. Between the music and the poignantly touching story to give it context, that day, I was immediately won over! I was in my teens then and am now in my forties, so I don't know how I missed this one all this time. I sincerely have regret for all people that never get a chance to revel in this songs beauty and glory!!

I know how much you loved Mr. Blue Sky. It is the finale song on the "Concerto for a Rainy Day" suite on "Out of the Blue. Would love to see you react to the entire suite; that and I am sure many other fans would as well!

It is comprised of all four songs on the third side of “Out of the Blue” the last being Mr. Blue Sky. It was inspired by the terrible weather Jeff encountered in the Alps when he sat down to write the songs for the album. When the sun finally appeared it inspired Mr. Blue Sky.

Saw them in 1976. It was the first time I saw cellos on stage in a rock band. This classical singer was geeking out.

So fine to see you react on ELO-songs!
On OOTB there are sooo many songs I would want 'you' to analyze...and enjoy!
Concerto for a Rainy Day/Standing in the Rain, Starlight, Wild West Hero, Big Wheels, Sweet is the Night....to name a few..all of these great compositions are timeless.

@@bennyandersen742 - metal and classical are my jam!! And let me just throw out the name Tony Iommi as a Lynne-level talent for coming up with killer riffs. But Lynne's sense of harmony is baroque-like in its depth in my opinion.
