-Our Intro Song "Feel the Love" From Alex's band
open.spotify.com/album/4Dao8y... Кино
I'm one of the biggest ELO fans you'll find, but I'd give this one a B+ too. Not every song has to be an all-time wonderful can't miss winner. Many bands would wish they could have a song this good, but there are many many better ones from ELO. I don't think it's a put-down at all to say that. It's just a testament to how many other great songs they had.
Same.
Truer words have never been said! They were my first concert in 1982. I’ve been a huge fan my entire life. I also can say it’s not an A+, but that’s ok. The majority of bands ever existed wish they could have a library of music even 50% as good as this song.
Fire On High.
When ELO are good, they are Very Good - this track is nowhere near their best - so much better material to review !!
Even as a fan, I wouldn't recommend the original versions to someone coming in to ELO. Something from the Zoom live concert would be a good place to start.
"Can't Get It Out of My Head" is a good one.
Probably my favorite ELO song.
First ELO song I ever heard, and still one of my favorites
I'd rate this higher than Turn to Stone. One of my favorites.
It's where Jeff Lynne does his best John Lennon impression
agree
I did not "get" this song for many years. Seemed awfully upbeat just so, so *speedy* for a please-come-back song...
Then, my husband died.
Now... it all makes sense. I turned to stone - but that frenetic pace of the world continuing on (turning, turning....) lies front and center just as it does in the song, and my blue world is being dragged speedily along with it. And I doubt Jeff Lynne was writing about someone's death but wow, he sure nailed the feeling. Right down to the "When you comin' home?" that pops up every now and again in this song, just like it does in my mind.
I'm sorry for your loss Sharon.
@@VenusDeMilitant Much appreciated.
I lost my husband a couple of years ago after 43 years of marriage, and I totally so get that feeling also. Wishing you the best. It is so difficult.
@@m.singleton1399 I'm so sorry - wishing you the best as well. I probably should've made clear that I lost my husband over a year ago (pre-COVID) - so recent-ish but not real recent. A similar situation as yours as it was 40+ years of marriage - which means we met long enough ago that we were together when this song came out.
Sorry for your loss.
In the late 70's, after the Beatles broke up, they were asked what direction they would have gone had they not broken up and they said "We'd be ELO"
"They said"?
Can't remember if it was Lennon or McCartney that was quoted but I'm sure you can Google it.
I'm not sure that was a compliment.
@@robertheckman8013 My money's on McCartney. Now that I think about it, McCartney's Wings sound an awful lot like ELO. But the Beatles would never have devolved into ELO.
A few facts:
John called ELO their "little brothers".George and Ringo appeared on several ELO albums. Jeff Lynn produced several post Beatles solo projects. And of course, George and Jeff were both in "The Travelling Wilbury's"
"Evil Woman" I've known one or two in my life ✌️♥️
One of their best along with Do Ya And Can’t Get It Out Of My head.
Evil Woman was the very first ELO song I remember hearing when I was about 15. After that, it was Strange Magic. It's hard to choose, but if I could only listen to one ELO song for the rest of my life, it would probably be Strange Magic. 😊
@@oldiesgeek454 turned to stone is another one I listened to over and over Jeff Lynne is a musical genius 👍✌️♥️
Everyone tried to be the Beatles. Remember this was literally within a decade of the Beatles breaking up, and all four were still alive and recording. So, too recent to be an homage. Remember the Beatles influenced everyone! This also was smack in the middle of Disco, so there were rock fans who thought ELO were too disco influenced! ELO was ELO, no one sounded like them. Give them cred fellas!
Not "everyone" tried to be the Beatles, but I totally get what you mean. Around the same time this song came out (mid 70's), there were also a few bands that were doing their best to sound NOT like the Beatles as much as possible. Bands that were trying to change things up and take music into brand new territory - not just putting more layers of fancy icing on top of the same old cake.
Kraftwerk and The Sex Pistols are two that come to mind. Two *completely* different bands - one was pioneering electronica and the other was intent on ripping the establishment a new one. Both wanted to take music somewhere brand new, and they sure did.
ELO was very good at making fancy icing, but it was still the same old boring cake underneath.
I remember an WNEW interview w/John Lennon where he calls ELO son of beatles.
Yeah, when I say “everyone” it’s not literal, but you heard even Cream making vocal arrangements like some Beatles songs, and how many one hit wonders back on the day played off it. I think what people mean, and I get it, was the orchestration of ELO (natural when cello was a band instrument) and of course their penchant for pop with a lot of intricate harmonies sounded somewhat Beatlesque. The Beatles ranged way beyond that, but that era was such a musical explosion that a case could be made for all the bands to have influenced each other. Considering we have had years to over analyze classic rock, when you were growing up with it as I was, it just felt like the genre was growing and expanding daily, and ELO was a large part of that expanse.
@@joe34012 Speculating the sometimes comparison is made because of both bands having string sections in their compositions. Funny this phenomenon doesn't seem to be quite so mercurial for bands having horn sections in their compositions. Indeed, ELO has always simply been...ELO.
I think this era of ELO was heavily influenced by a set of sounds the Beatles used on a few songs. we know Jeff Lynne was influenced by the Beatles and worked with them after this quite a bit. No mystery here really.
One great ELO song that never gets mentioned is "Rockaria". It needs some love, damnit!
Well I'm sure now that you've mentioned it they'll react to it any day now
I agree Rockaria is a classic
Love Rockaria.
@@Lightmane 😂😂😂😁😁
@@kimrivera5302😀 Nice pic 😎😋
I'm such a fan of ELO! I have no complaints! I think this song is an A+
Jeff Lynne is a genius. He learned to write songs by bringing his passion for The Beatles to the next level. During this time, 1977. He was s friend of and respected by The Beatles. All four of them..
It was the album opener.
Ironically Andy, ELO is just Jeff now. Just Jeff.
He is ELO.
He got his big break joining Roy wood and bev bevan in the move , big band in the uk ,lynne on there last 4 hits and co,produced but all written by wood .
Ergo, his present-day band is called "Jeff Lynne's ELO".
@@heathermackinnon9527 True. But I love the latest two albums. I listen to them all of the time.
Maybe one day he will be in The Traveling Wilburys
If you want to really hear how good his voice is try Can't Get It Out of My Head. Hauntingly good!
Do “sweet talkin woman” next. It’s my favorite. “Strange Magic” is also greatness.
Two of my favorites, for sure!
My two favorite ELO songs easily. Great picks
Sweet Talkin' Woman!
Also, Fire On High.
If you love Jeff Lynn's voice with no harmonies you have got to hear showdown it is a banger and I guarantee you both will love it
YES! Showdown is the one!
Great song but IMO his voice was not yet at its best
You know that's right!
Agreed - Showdown is a true gem.
They will like Showdown.
Fire on High is worth a listen.
I loved that! Flip side of Livin’ Thing?
The music is reversible, but time is not! And yes, they definitely need to hear this one.
Definitely! They should do that, Tightrope, and Twilight as the next 3.
@@Nick051967 From Face the Music
Keep in mind this was a concept album, of sorts; but this was HUGE when it came out. All over the radio, but Mr. Blue Sky was the best.
I don't know it they did it all over the country but in Oklahoma and Colorado the record stores had Huge Paintings that reproduced this album cover. It was about 8 ft. square right in front of the entrance door. It made me buy it!!!
Yep best album brit awards
The album as-a-whole gets an A+ here.
Jeff Lynne is one of the best writers and singers in Rock History. He's just very original. ELO is wonderful. Again, the 70s music is so good.
Turn To Stone reached no.1 in Canada in 1977. Out Of The Blue by ELO is the best double album ever MUSICALLY.
Would have liked "Can't Get It Out Of My Head", but I am placated, since you used my poll this week. :)
Time to try some early Robert Palmer "Sailin' Shoes-Hey Julia-Sneaking Sally through the Alley"
Yes. This.
I try to support this every time you bring it up!
@@TheDameduck Thank you
"An out pops the wife"🎼 sneaking with Sally down the alley 🎶🎶🎶🧡
Yes. This medley is an absolute win!
Do "Do Ya" or "So Fine" or "Night in the City" by ELO.
Do Ya is a good mixup from ELO's usual formula. Just a straight-up Rock Song.
Please do "Do Ya"!!
So fine !!!
So Fine would be a good one to see them react to because of "surprise middle" - a total shock on first listen, and you only get to experience that one time - like a surprise ending to a movie, you don't spoil it for them.
Oh, and also, yeah, do Do Ya.
Traveling Wilburys guys Great vocals and supergroup
Love this warm, full, rich, catchy song.
Do Ya is another great song by ELO (written by Jeff when with the Move), excellent one to check out!!
Bside to California man the moves last hit in 1972 .
YES! I've been pushing this one myself. Do Ya is more of a rocker and makes this one sound like disco.
I think it gets overlooked because it wasn't on ELO's Greatest Hits Album.
Wow the ELO haters are out in force. It’s a poll so majority presumably picked this one, live with it. ELO is a great way to cheer up any day particularly a lock down friday.
In majority of polls whichever track gets the most airplay on, classic rock stations inevitably wins.
Example
Turn To Stone Joe Walsh a hit but not near his biggest.
A B+ band in my opinion.
@Scott Allen Jeff Lynne is the most talented overall musician and producer ever, at the same time he is such a humble down to earth man with kindness.
Start from the ELO start when Roy Wood was in the band - 10538 Overture
Maybe we should start a thread of songs and call it ‘Songs We KNOW Alex & Andy will HATE!’ 😉
Gary Numan - Cars. It's interesting in a Kraftwerk sort of way, but I can't see them digging it.
Genesis - Illegal Alien. Cringe city.
Moody Blues - Here Comes The Weekend. They won't absolutely hate it, but will be strongly disappointed at what could have been a banger if the production were less 80s-like.
Flying Lizards - Money. That poor, poor piano. Nuff said.
Paul Hardcastle - 19. N n n n nineteen.
M - Pop Musik. I like it, but I don't think they would.
Good one!
The Far Corporation - Stairway to Heaven, Guaranteed hate (and rightly so)
How about some Yello from the 80s, maybe 'base for alec'... that probably wouldn't go down all to well :)
Would they like Aldo Nova, Fantasy?
Do Ya is a banger!
Biggest ELO bangers are Do Ya, Living Thing and especially Don't Bring Me Down
TGIF! I know it didn't win the poll but Joe Walsh's Turn to Stone is a great song too and well worth a reaction.
Definitely got to hit Joe Walsh's Turn To Stone. Heavy duty guitar work and definitely not a tribute to the Beatles.
Classic.
Wow, this is the first song in like 2 months you guys covered that I'm actually interested in seeing your reaction to. I LOVE ELO and Turn to Stone is one of their best, IMO! Good to have a reason to come back here! ;)
I LOVE the whole damned album.
ELO you must do Fire on High. IMHO their best song just make sure you play it through the change.
Yep! I crank that up in the car often. Nice song to play air guitar on the steering wheel 🤣
"Showdown" by these guys is a fantastic, underrated sleeper!!!
"Fire On High" is a great instrumental performed by ELO.
Been telling them for months. They just don't seem to be interested.
The need to do Fire on high just for the music, not words...or, they could play it backwards! LOL
The guitars in Fire On High always make me think it's by Eric Clapton, and I have to remind myself that it's ELO. And, despite it being an "instrumental", they'll still need to check into the lyrics to fully understand what they just heard!
@@angelamarino8741 is that the song you can play the record backwards and it plays “The Music is Reversible ?” I remember my Dad showing is that , I thought it was A Pink Floyd song! 🤔
played this album to death when i was kid...that break with the vocals after the 2nd chorus- wow....
How have y’all not done Evil Woman or Strange Magic by ELO yet? When I was listening to radio circa 1991-96 (I’m 40) those got WAY more airplay than any ELO you’ve done so far. I get that these songs were huge back in the seventies, but by the nineties the only songs classic rock radio played (at least in Austin, TX) were the two I mentioned, Do Ya, and Don’t Bring Me Down, that’s it. Those 4 are essential to react to. 🙏
“Evil Woman” is the epitome of ELO for sure.
That's "commercial" radio for ya. Play "Night in the City," "Standin' in the Rain," "Sweet is the Night," and/or "Big Wheels." From the album "Time", play "Twilight."
Showdown! by E.L.O.
You guys will be drawn in, it just grooves more than any other song and in such an unusual way. Truly, if the first listen doesn't get you, the second will make you a midnight driving jammer to the song.
"Fire On High" an ELO instrumental banger!
LOVE this SONG!
Their instrumental Fire on High is 🔥
Andy and Alex....Neil Young epic guitar: cowgirl in the sand, down by the river, like a hurricane. Please!
Cortez the Killer!!
Cortez the Killer is my favorite Neil Young song. Amazing and passionate.
@@CousinCreepy Oops, you’re absolutely right! How can I have forgotten that one?
I've been banging on A&A for awhile to do a reaction to
Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) from Rust Never Sleeps. Some of Neil's dirtiest guitar work.
And we know how Alex feels about songs with parenthesis!
"Evil Woman" is a great one IMO. And "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle" is very underrated.
the call and response vocal tracks production on this one are spectacular..
I totally agree Alex. The ending especially.
Still waiting for the live version of Roll Over Beethoven. 7:13 of absolute chaos. It's a definite S tier.
Jeff Lynne is generally considered the "5th Beatle" since he was close friends with them and the same age. So the Beatles comparison is valid, great minds think alike.
Please consider"Traveling Wilburys". Tom Petty, Bob Dillon, Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, Roy Orbison ..."End of the line".Just friends playing some good music together.
Lots of people have been dubbed "The 5th Beatle" over the years. Jeff Lynne joined the long list in the 90's when he helped produce those unreleased Beatles tracks (Free as a Bird, etc).
People who were called "The 5th Beatle" before Jeff Lynne:
Firstly there were the early group members Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best, and temporary members Jimmie Nicol (drums) and Chas Newby (bass).
Production and management often got a nod: the press often referred to Brian Epstein (manager), George Martin (production), Neil Aspinall (road manager) and Derek Taylor (press/P.A) as 'the 5th Beatle' at various times.
Then there were the other significant musical contributors: Andy White (drums), Billy Preston (piano/keys), even Eric Clapton (guitar). Preston is probably the most common of these - John actually called him 'the 5th Beatle', and even wanted him to join the band full time (Paul said 'No').
Jeff Lynne unashamedly wears his Beatles obsession on his sleeve. He wanted ELO to pick up where the Beatles left off, and kept trying to write & produce songs that sounded like the Beatles. Its what makes ELO so polarizing. Some love ELO for their obvious Beatles sound, others detest them for the exact same reason, considering them pretenders - as authentic as a fake Rolex.
Lennon praised ELO, calling them "Sons of the Beatles" (although, knowing John's acerbic wit, it was just as likely a swipe at them for being Beatles wannabe's). And the other three all have worked with Jeff on lots of projects, so there's clearly reciprocated admiration from his heroes, regardless of what their respective fans think.
Regarding your "Great minds think alike" comment? If you're referring to Jeff Lynne and the Beatles, maybe "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants" would be more fitting. The Beatles did it. Jeff just tried to copy it. He is definitely a fine songwriter and producer. It would be interesting to hear what
That is called a brilliant pop song. Period.
Another Great ELO video song is :SHOWDOWN, so good...what I like about them is his voice and the inclusion of classical instruments
Now "Turn To Stone" Next "Sly Stone" ?
🙏Lookin' at the devil, grinnin' at his gun

I love this song!!
This song reminds me of driving home from high school in a blizzard.
ELO Eldorado album is superb, take a listen, it's one of the best!
That one takes back a looooonnng way! Played it to death back in '73 and '74. Going to put it on now!
Just watched some of the Wembley stadium concert the other night, a must see concert.
Great show!
I suggest Rockaria or actually the whole A New World Record album.
Yes, Rockaria!!
Totally agree!!! Rockaria, Tightrope, Shangri-la and So Fine are great songs.
@@deebell510 During a particularly bitter break up I must have listened to Shangri-la a hundred thousand times, feeling sorry for myself. LOL
I'll go along with "Rockaria" but would prefer "Tightrope" or, as you say, the whole album.
Rockaria is such a fun song. I often go through phases where I forget that it exists, and then when I rehear it, I play it about 50 times again in a week.
Conflicted? Seriously? Bored?? Wow! OK, gotta totally disagree on all points. This song is a freaking masterpiece of sound and production. This is the first time I’ve watched one of your reaction videos and am wondering if you actually listened to the same song as I did. Oh well, everyone obviously hears things differently. 😊
I totally agree with you. That amazing moog bass line underpins the song and it is almost 4 minutes of pure pleasure. I have always been given the impression it is one of their best, if not best tracks and I'm reading comments from other ELO fans here that it effectively 'average' ? It is certainly in my top 5 ELO tracks and could even be my favourite. As for the hosts getting bored and saying it sounds just like the Beatles, I think that constant irritating, frankly ridiculous head bobbing, has impaired their hearing. Makes them look like a right pair of clowns.
That Day in the Life ending was a tribute
We had so much good original music in the 70s.I'm glad I'm still alive to appreciate how fortunate I was to have been there when those songs came out.🎶🌴
Fire on high” is a brilliant jam
Two of my ELO favorites....Long Black Road and Hold on Tight
Across the Border for me!
ELO was my first live concert. It was their Out of the Blue tour. Still the best stage show I have ever seen.
ELO was my last show, right before the pandemic. An amazing show with Dhani Harrison opening.
I love ELO thanks guys🤘🏼
When you read the lyrics is was so poetic please do more poetry I would definitely tune in thanks
Watch them play this song Live and see how much the fans disagree. This is an A.
It's a great lead song.
How about some Otis Redding "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" or Paul Simon "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard” or Chuck Berry "No Particular Place to Go" or Blues Traveler "Run Around"
This song is an A+ for sure. Must have been using your cheap headphones for this song!
ELO music always makes me feel good. One of a kind sound.
The singer for ELO said that he formed his band to continue where the Beatles left off. So of course they are gonna sound like the Beatles.
The majority of their albums have cover art which has nothing to do with a space ship. The first space-ship cover was for "Out of the Blue" in 1977, which of course was massively popular. Then "Discovery" in 1979, and "Zoom" in 2001. All their other albums which have the space ship are either live or greatest-hits. I believe the space ship was a popular prop/setting for concerts.
Yeah, the object itself was first used on 1976's "A New World Record", but it wasn't depicted as a spaceship, as such; if anything, the design looked a lot like the neon lighting and metal trim of the top of an old Wurlitzer-style jukebox. In 1979's "Discovery", it was this mystical-looking glowing object found in Aladdin's cave (or something like it). 1977's "Out of the Blue" was the only studio album where it was actually depicted as a spaceship, until it reappeared on the cover of "Zoom" in 2001 -- otherwise, like you said, the only other places the design cropped up at all, as a spaceship or not, was on greatest-hits collections. (I'm not sure it was even used on a live album until after "Zoom", really.) I expect the reason people think it was on all of their albums now is that the spaceship motif was so memorable, and because it was used as a stage prop for live performances. (IIRC, their "Out of the Blue" tour actually had the entire band enclosed inside a giant clamshell build of the spaceship, and the top would rise up into the rafters to reveal the band when the show started.)
@@ballyastrocade5672 Yup, it was modeled on the Wurlitzer jukebox. Out of the Blue is a great example of why people still look for these big gate-fold LPs!
"Rockaria" is some real rock orchestration!!
Yes! I recommended this and god damn it’s exactly what I wanted :)
GOOOOOOOOOD MORNING A&A FAMILY!!!!

Next ELO song needs to be Evil Woman. That's a REAL banger. Turn to Stone is nice enough, but it's probably in the bottom 50% of their repertoire, quality wise.
Had a feeling you guys wouldn't love this. My vote is for Sweet Talkin' Woman next
I agree, I love it!
Ticket to the moon is great!
What you need is a 70s 4 minute hit single:
Sparks - This town ain't big enough for the both of us
Roxy Music - Streetlife
Be Bop Deluxe - Maid in Heaven
Hawkwind - Silver Machine
ROXY MUSIC!
Love Roxy Music!
Be Bop Deluxe ... Hell yes! Anything from "Live In The Air Age". What a great band that somehow flew under the radar. "Sister Seagull" (must be live version!) Is a banger!
@@matthewford5094 Sent them a book in with a whole chapter on Roxy Music. Thinking back on it there was another one on Slade. We'll probably end up getting Cum on Feel the Noize getting reviewed first the way the Fates toy with us.
Those may have been hits in the U.K. but none of them were in North America.
Need to do a full react to Time.
I agree. That's an album that has to be listened to in its entirety as the "time" theme runs through all the songs. I love that album!
People don’t appreciate that album like they should. Time is a classic!!
Somebody should!
I wish ELO was more like Time.
When I saw them live in 2017 the audience was a mix of 80 year olds, 60 year olds and 30-40s. Not a single person was in their seat for this one.
Greatest album ever recorded in human history, by the greatest band ever!
Next do Strange Magic or Do Ya
"Do Ya" and "Poker" show a harder edge of ELO's bag of tricks. Just to let you know they knew about guitars too.
Poker is one of my early to mid-ELO favourites.

“Evil Woman” is a must- 💜💜👍✌️
One of my favorite ELO tunes :)
I have loved ELO since they came out and I was a kid,I never really listened to the Beatles at that age because the Beatles were disbanded then so I never made the comparison. Older I can see what you mean hearing them after listening to the Beatles, but to me, ELO is my favorite of the two. I do love the Beatles solos though with Paul McCartney and Wings being my favorite(Band On The Run and Jet are my faves). Sweet Talking Woman is my fave by ELO. Keep On Rockin`
Can't go wrong with any of the members of Travelling Wilburys 😁
This was a great song for the roller rink with the disco ball...
"EVIL WOMAN" By ELO kills it! You gotta try this one out!
I'm 57... I own most of ELO's albums, bought most of them in my teens/twenties.
I loved their diversity...the odd sounding Kuiama, (a war awarness/protest song) and the kind of silly Jungle, and the fun Mr. Blue Sky. But my 2 favorite songs that they did are:
Sweet Is The Night and Strange Magic.
Need to add...lol...their instrumental Fire On High is sheer awesomeness : )
Also 57. And they have always been one of my favorites. So Fine is a favorite, makes you smile.
'Showdown' is the ELO song you need to do!
alright Canadians.. lets all let A n A feel .... The Tragically Hip. Canadian Maplesauce
Hear, hear!
You have to let Jeff have his Beatles moment. Can’t beat some ELO on Friday night - pass the G&T’s!🥂😎
This song is probably the most Beatles song they do.
Nice chatting with folks today fellas. Thanks and have a great weekend!
"Tightrope" is one of my favorites from this band. Check it out boys.
Showdown is a really good ELO song
The second single I ever bought was ELO's "Roll Over Beethoven". I played cello when I was very young and thought ELO's crossover of classical and rock was rad. For some reason I never really warmed to the rest of their music. That and I had a job where "Out of the Blue" was in perpetual rotation.
We need Andy and Alex to do some NYC rock bands. Velvet Underground/Lou Reed should make an appearance at some point.
I really like the groove on this, what they do with the synths/keyboards - that is what makes this song really stand out. I also like the fade in, and the mid-song almost a Capella break.
I think you’ve let Foghat sizzle long enough, “I Just Want To Make Love To You” is long overdue!!!
Righto ,Marty.R.I.P..Lonesome Dave..Home in My Hand is great ,as well.
Yes please!
Anything from their live album really♥️

Some facts about Jeff Lynne (ELO)...First, he is a very humble man, simply because this Music Genius is not interested in fame, the limelight, and money, he just loves to create great music. Jeff Lynne is one of the most versatile musicians ever, this is why he is considered by his peers to be among the greatest. He didn't stick to one style of music because, after decades, it gets boring. Jeff has done progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock - Pop, New wave, and Disco.
Everything he does turns to gold. He even flirted with Country music. From 1972 to 1986 (During 14 years) Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra has had more top 40 hits than any other group in the world... 51 years later they still play in sold-out Arenas, festivals and Stadiums. During Jeff Lynne's ELO 2019 Tour, many reviews agreed in saying they are the best live Classic Rock Band in the world still touring and Jeff Lynne is a Music Genius( From Forbes Magazine and the Washington Post).
ELO is in the Rock Hall of Fame. Lynne is on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and Birmingham Walk OF Fame. Jeff Lynne’s ELO won the Best Classic Rock Band plus Lynne won the best Songwriter award ( ASCAP ) in 2019 for his fantastic contribution over the years. In October of 2020, Jeff Lynne has been made an officer of The Order Of The British Empire for his extraordinary contribution to music.
