    Some facts about Jeff Lynne (ELO)...First, he is a very humble man, simply because this Music Genius is not interested in fame, the limelight, and money, he just loves to create great music. Jeff Lynne is one of the most versatile musicians ever, this is why he is considered by his peers to be among the greatest. He didn't stick to one style of music because, after decades, it gets boring. Jeff has done progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock - Pop, New wave, and Disco.
    Everything he does turns to gold. He even flirted with Country music. From 1972 to 1986 (During 14 years) Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra has had more top 40 hits than any other group in the world... 51 years later they still play in sold-out Arenas, festivals and Stadiums. During Jeff Lynne's ELO 2019 Tour, many reviews agreed in saying they are the best live Classic Rock Band in the world still touring and Jeff Lynne is a Music Genius( From Forbes Magazine and the Washington Post).
    ELO is in the Rock Hall of Fame. Lynne is on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and Birmingham Walk OF Fame. Jeff Lynne’s ELO won the Best Classic Rock Band plus Lynne won the best Songwriter award ( ASCAP ) in 2019 for his fantastic contribution over the years. In October of 2020, Jeff Lynne has been made an officer of The Order Of The British Empire for his extraordinary contribution to music. He previously has received three Ivor Novello Awards, which celebrate songwriters and composers, including the award for outstanding services to British music.
    He created the best Super Group of all time with his best friend George Harrison, The Traveling Wilburys. The Legends in the Music Industry call Jeff Lynne the best overall Musician ever and a Producer Extraordinaire. Jeff Lynne has written and produced many hit songs for music legends like George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Del Shannon, the Everly Brothers, The Beatles, and so many others...

    • @poluxsaurus1454
      @poluxsaurus1454 4 года назад

      I think "virtuoso" refers to super high skills, like Vai on guitar or Emerson on keyboards. Lynne is not like that, but he can come up with exactly what a song is calling for. For example his guitar solos are short and simple, but tasteful and effective (I'm thinking Showdown, Mr. Blue Sky...).

    John Lennon said that ELO was what the Beatles may have been had they stayed together - Jeff Lynne adored the Beatles, and became a member of the Traveling Wilburys (led by George Harrison) and produced the 'treatles' (Free as a Bird, Real Love) as he was the only one with the ability and approval of the three surviving Beatles

  • @ChaiMeiLan
    @ChaiMeiLan 4 года назад +80

    Finally!
    Jeff Lynne said in the documentary about him, “Mr. Blue Sky; The Story of Jeff Lynne and ELO” that he wrote “Living Thing” out of his distress over the damage he was seeing to the environment. He also owns his love for pop music over all other kinds. He is a musical genius. Plays all instruments well. He is a prolific producer including many successful albums for Tom Petty, Brian Wilson, The Beatles final album, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Bryan Adams, Roy Orbison, and The Traveling Wilburys. Fascinating stuff learning about the history of that super group.
    He is a very quiet and humble person, so it really took ages for him to finally be recognized as the legend he is.
    His perfectionism caused him to quit touring in the 80s because he couldn’t achieve the sound quality he wanted. So he turned to producing. But now the technology has improved and ELO in concert is perfection in concert, even in a crappy acoustic venue like the Tacoma Dome!
    If I could only listen to one artist for the rest of my life, it would be ELO, and I’d never get tired of them. So much variety and positive energy.

Jeff Lynne is an absolute genius. He wrote all of his songs (except for 2). He also co-wrote many Tom Petty songs (including Free Falling). He was in the band The Idle Race when "Walrus" came out. Most bands in the UK were heavily influenced by The Beatles. Three LPs with that band, which are very Beatlesque, then joined The Move for their final two LPs and singles. The Move also very comparable to The Beatles but had their own flair.

    Nerd commentary: As brilliant as Jeff Lynne is, one must not overlook Jeff's collaborator, bassist and co-vocalist on almost all.the classic releases, the late great Kelly Groucutt, who provided the vocal harmonies and leads on many songs that most attribute to Jeff. The drummer, Bev Bevan, has been with the project since he and Jeff were in The Move (another respected influential and seminal rock/power pop group) along with Roy Wood. Roy, Jeff, and Bev reconstituted The Move into a few.incarnations of ELO (I, II, etc) until Roy left the band with Jeff to develop it into the version of the band we know now. Truly, so.much musical.bliss on many levels as you have discovered.

    Here I am, a day late. I hope you still read this, A&A. ELO was one of my favorite groups through my high school years exactly for the reasons you mentioned. The songs typically feel upbeat and "bright", even pop-ish, but the lyrics are surprisingly poetic and can take you just about anywhere on the light-dark scale. Jeff Lynne's arrangements and production are masterful. It's no wonder that he has been in tight with other rock and roll greats, like the other members of the Traveling Wilburys -- Tom Petty (it's way past time you did some Petty songs), Bob Dylan (it's way past time you did some Dylan songs), Roy Orbison (it's way past time you did some Orbison), and George Harrison (do I have to say it?). I don't know if anybody has already mentioned it, but when the Beatles finally reunited in the 1990s to do a new song, "Free as a Bird", they chose Jeff Lynne to be their producer. That's got to say something about the respect he has among other musicians. Other ELO songs to try would include "Turn to Stone", "Telephone Line", "Mr. Blue Sky", "Evil Woman", "Don't Bring Me Down", and "Can't Get It Out of My Head".

    Ahh, my 1st laser light concert, back in 70's, was ELO. The cello had a mirror box inset they hit w lasers that sprinkled & shone light in all directions. You guys are really finding the good music so many of us grew up with. Def dig deeper into ELO.

      Personally neither of those songs are even close to their best. You are doing a disservice to the band by steering people towards those songs. They are fine songs but they don’t hit my ear the same way as at least half a dozen of their other tracks.

    This was when Jeff Lynne was entering his disco period. Earlier he had more bangers (Showdown comes to mind). Jeff was a producer deluxe and a huge Beatles fan.

    When this kid heard this song being played on AM radio back in 1976, I went out and bought the vinyl and became a huge ELO fan. This song was and still is my absolute favourite from ELO.

    S-Tier.... "Mr. Blue Sky". This is the one. They have a ton of great songs... but this is the one. Alex, this is the one.

    • @Wtfumean4511

      Respectfully disagree. ELO has more than one S Tier song. Of course Mr Blue Sky is in that category.

      @@Wtfumean4511I agree. I didn't mean to imply that any of their other songs were inferior, but for what Alex says he likes (Great arrangements with layers and layers to explore all wrapped up in pop melody heaven) "Mr. Blue Sky" is the next obvious choice. It's a mind-blower with one of the greatest outros ever recorded. Of all their S-Tier hits, this one stands out as the most unconventional in terms of songwriting and arrangement. I can imagine a really, really good local bar band could cover "Don't Bring Me Down" or "Turn To Stone" or " Can't Get It Out Of My Head" and do a reasonably good job that you and I would be happy with... but "Mr. Blue Sky"? No way. The song is a monster. Any of their songs will make these kids love ELO. But this song will make them invest in the vinyl.

    "Don't Bring me Down" was probably their biggest hit. In the late 70s we could hear it 20+ times per day.
    "Telephone Line" is also primo music.
    Beware that a lot of their songs were way too Poppy-poopy-Pop, but mostly they were cool.
    In concert, their stage was a big spaceship!

      They have plenty of songs that aren't at all poppy, like Bluebird is Dead, Oh No Not Susan to name just a couple. This was my favorite band in the 70s, took up the cello because of them, just seeing those guys rocking the cello, made me want to do it too, but alas I just didn't have that kind of talent. Their biggest hits like Telephone Line, Turn to Stone, Don't Bring me Down are great, but nowhere near their best or my favorites.

    From 1972 to 1986 (During 14 years), ELO accumulated more combined UK and US Top 40 hits than any other band in the world, and also generated the third most UK and US separate Top 40 hits. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Light_Orchestra_discography

    You guys were hitting on ALL of it!! Well done!! You picked up on so much that IS ELO and Jeff Lynne!
    Ok! Now we’re talking, fellas!!! Jeff Lynne is the man! So many potential tunes for a next step! Showdown- pure rock funk,; Telephone Line- their biggest hit and really melancholy,; Sweet Talkin Woman- great, hooked, jam; Do Ya- Rock jam; and so many more!
    Jeff Lynne produces for the Beatles, Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Tom Petty- look up what the Beatles and McCartney have to say about Jeff. The word “genius” truly applies.
    Also, the documentary “Mr. Blue Sky” about Jeff Lynne is absolutely fantastic!! A must-see!
