I've seen lots of great Police tunes mentioned here but one of my all-time favorites doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet ... Invisible Sun. It's a dark and gritty tune compared to most of their other singles.
That guy singing is Sting. He definitely may be from wayyyy before you're time although he's still around now his voice doesn't have the range it had then. The drummer Stewart Copeland is just as famous as a soundtrack creator for numerous TV shows and movies over the years.

@@merylschoenbaum319 "DOES sound like an angel" - isn't that actually an OPINION dressed up as a fact? Since we all know exactly what angels sound like... That is one thing. Secondly, where is the negation? You are entitled to your opinion, just as I am entitled to mine - that Fragile both lyrically and musically is the bettet song, so don't you don't me, OK? You might want to avoid posting something in public if you don't want your opinions to be confronted and your precious feelings hurt.

    • @merylschoenbaum319

DrittAdrAtta Nope, two different things. My comment was written with good intentions to inform Alex that there’s a song where Sting voice actually does have an angelic sound and he might want to hear that quality in his voice. Random notes: Guitarist Andy Summers is ten years older than Sting and drummer Stewart Copeland and was in The Animals (House of the Rising Sun) in the late 1960s after the first big split that led to their bassist becoming Hendrix's manager. Andy recently had a two person band called Circa Zero (album title Circus Hero) with musician Rob Giles who foes everything except guitar on that album. I vaguely know Rob as I've seen him at various tiny venues and he was in a band called The Rescues with some people I actually know. The Police influenced the reggae aspects of Rush including the end bit of The Spirit of Radio. Neil was a huge fan of Stewart in particular. Stewart Copeland was the drummer for The Police. He brother (their manager at this time) later founded IRS Records famous for discovering R.E.M. His father was in the CIA. The actual CIA. Sting started in the movie adaptation of Quadrophenia right after this album and that movie came out in (1979). Sting had later success. ;)

Miles Copeland did not discover R.E.M. Bill Berry worked at the Paragon Booking Agency in Macon with Ian Copland who was Stuart Copeland's brother. He and Mills Mills used to hang out with Ian who turned Bill and Mike onto all the new wave music that was coming out of England in the late seventies R.E.M. opened for the Police in December of 1980 at the Fox Theater in Atlanta when XTC canceled at the last minute. R.E.M. had a single on hibtone records and they had demo tapes circulating. The New York Times had already put their single on their best of list for 1981 They turned down an offer from R.C.A. and finally chose I.R.S. because it was an up an coming independent label known for letting artists make their own creative decisions.

In that same way that singers like Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, Carole King, Carly Simon, even Stevie Nicks...It isn't about what their voices CAN'T do, or them trying to achieve a level of perfection. Sting is such a metaphorical writer, and that song is a prime example. People thought it was about something... that it wasn't. Great suggestion.

Saw them in the late 70's at CBGB. Try "The Bed's Too Big," and "Secret Journey" next.

I can't imagine having the feeling again of hearing Stewart Copeland for the first time and thinking (anew) "This may be the best rock drummer ever."
    Yup.

You guys should do a reaction to "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" by the Temptations. It's a departure from what you've been doing(somewhat), but it's a true classic.

The Police and the New Wavers helped save rock and roll as far as I'm concerned. Trad rock had become largely formulaic and boring by the late Seventies, and these new sounds showed new inspiration, innovation, and very importantly, economy -- no bloated rock operas or conservatory rock.

I agree with your sentiment, I felt the same way at the time. I do now however appreciate those older rock bands again, especially watching/listening along with Andy and Alex!
so...best of all worlds now I guess. Would love to see them explore some bands like X, the Vapors, the Undertones, Sqeeze, XTC, B-52's, Romeo Void, Oingo Boingo, etc...

I had a thought. Maybe doing like a deep dive into one artist? For example, Sting. Do a couple more Police tunes and then 3 of his solo things. Get to know Sting. And then get to know... Don Henley, Stevie Nicks, Eric Clapton, Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Paul McCartney....etc. All these ppl had great "band" careers and great solo careers. Think it would be great for you to deep dive into one artist like once or twice a month? What do you think? I get to pick the Sting songs though! LOL 😘 (btw Sting's voice is awesome and very malleable. ♥

When you say "I like that, that was a good chord" at the beginning, followed by the laugh, that was the lead singer (Sting) sitting on the piano accidentally and laughing. 😆

The dude wants it both ways in the end “don’t” then yeh, put it on. He wouldn’t want her if she weren’t sexy.
Sting was also an actor, playing duplicitous anti-heros, check him out in “Dune”.
Stewart Copland learned tp play drums in Beruit where he grew up.
