"Message in a Bottle" for some of the absolute best rock drumming you'll ever want to hear. The precision, the tone color, the variety ... Stewart Copeland is a genius.
I am not a Police fan by any stretch, but even I am sensible enough to be able to state unequivocally that "Synchronicity II" is a phenomenal song you would be wise to check out. A+ for sure.
This song is my favorite Police song, just because of the vibe and personal taste, but Synchronicity II has to be about the best pop-rock song ever written. That song is a performing band at its absolute peak.
I remember having a discussion with someone who didn't understand why it was called "Synchronicity II." I was just like, you can't hear how one is derived from the other, then there's something seriously missing from your sense of musicality.
For a long time, I’ve had a theory that whatever music you start listening to when you’re 14 or 15 years old is the music you’ll love for the rest of your life. New wave broke big in 1978, the year I turned 15 and the Police released their first album, and while it may not be everyone’s taste, to 57-year-old me it’s still the greatest music ever. So more Police, please! And more Cars and Pretenders and Talking Heads! And don't forget Blondie and Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson!
I like the police and I'm 55, but I'm more of a 70's classic rock sort. Zep, The Who, Rush, Yes, etc etc ...But yeah when the police first came out especially, I was a big fan. I'm a drummer and Stewart Copeland was a breath of fresh air in a pretty stale environment at the time. Love his style!
I started listening to popular music when I was 3 in 1970. My parents bought me Rod Stewart's album "Every Picture Tells a Story" cos I loved "Maggie May." To this day, I love the music I grew up with and don't listen to anything else.
Totally agree with your age theory, that would be late sixties for me although I loved a lot of eighties/nineties music too. Don't Stand So Close To Me totally one of my favorites.
I agree with the theory - (as I thought of it before you) - time and place and memories - like a baby duck thinking its mother is the first thing it sees.
The Police were all over the radio in the 80s. That you haven't heard this is a testament to how popular bands come and go like fads and all passing sensations. What people think is huge and prominant now will just be a footnote to your kids in the future.
I was very fortunate to see The Police on their Reunion Tour in 2007 (May have been 2008) and they were unbelievable! Stewart Copeland broke his snare drum head after the 2nd song. That dude is not just a drummer, but a true percussionist and musician. All 3 of those guys had a special chemistry when they were together. A very volatile chemistry, but it really did lend to the chemistry of the music.
Synchronicity II should be next. It's heavy, weird and catchy. BTW, that album cover for Ghost in the Machine isn't actually numbers...it's digital caricatures of the member's faces.
@@spicy321 My first thought was that it was supposed to be an LED display trying to show Japanese characters. :-) I didn't catch on to it until later, when I actually saw a picture of the band with Sting's spikey hairstyle.

"It's a big enough umbrella But it's always me that ends up getting wet." at the end is a reprise from the second verse which starts "Do I have to tell the story / Of a thousand rainy days since we first met?" Fun fact - it's returned to again in "Oh My God" from their next album, "Syncronicity", and again on "Seven Days" from Sting's solo album "Ten Summoner's Tales."
There was a time in the early 80s where the Police were arguably the biggest rock band in the world. There are only three guys in the band. Sting sings and plays bass in the Police. They broke up at the height of their fame. Sting’s solo stuff is absolutely incredible but the raw magic of the Police is a different beast entirely.
@@matthewhetzler4912 Yes, its their faces. The one in the middle is Sting. Note his 'sort of' spiked up 80's hairstyle at the time. Or if you look at pictures of him, maybe not 'spiked' perse but tuffed-up in the middle top of his head
At the time, electronic devices displayed numbers and characters with those red LCD bars. That was before LED. The first digital watches, which were super hot at the time, looked like that.
To many great songs by the Police. Saw them on the Synchronicity Tour. One of my top 10 concerts. It’s nice to see that younger adults are getting into the 60’s 70’s & 80’s music. No Autotune or Lipsyncing. You actually had to have talent. Great video!
I thought I heard in some interview recently, that the umbrella/getting wet lyrics were in reference to ‘Bus Stop’, and their admiration for the Hollies. Fantastic song.
The Police were phenomenal. Sting has his own catalogue and has evolved so far beyond his beginnings. One of his best solos is Desert Rose, sung featuring Cheb Mami. Check it out. Truly beautiful music.
Amazing musicians. Sting is the only musician I've ever seen who can play in one time signature, dance in another and sing in a 3rd, all at once. Saw them in concert back in '84.
"Spirits in the Material World", "Message in a Bottle", or "Invisible Sun" are awesome songs. It took me a while to realize that they're basically reggae.
Fuk yeah, played Sync II the other day & can't stop it rattling round my head..... Again, it's the drum beat driving it. ..& 5mins is still too short. It's now on..... again.
Y’all need to listen to Roy Orbisons “only the lonely” if you’ve never listened you are missing a legend. All others admired him but could not duplicate because of his amazing voice.
The police are one of the best, most original bands out there. Music like this didn't exist before them.Would love to hear "canary in a coal mine". You guys got to hit R.E.M soon! Another really awesome, original band🎸
Stewart Copeland is one of rock's most creative drummers. Check out Walking on the Moon from this same album, it's very minimalist yet atmospheric with more amazing drumming.
And Stings solo career was quite brilliant. His solo albums from dream of the blur turtles, right up to brand new day were sonically epic. He used solely world class, top notch musicians on his albums.
The steel drums under the chorus are one of the coolest touches on this masterpiece. Its like the glockenspiel on the E Street stuff. Once you identify it you never dont hear it in there
yessss....I always loved the steel drums in this song. it gave the chorus and island feel and and the chorus would definitely not be as uplifting as it is without them..
"Waliking On The Moon" is probably the best showcase for Stuart Copelands drumming, snare action! "Casey Jones" by the Grateful Dead also awesome snare action.
You're right, incredibly exciting song!! It's electrifying, and I agree, Copeland just kills and drives this song with an amazing energy - this is all about Copeland's outrageous feel
The thing about The Police is that whilst they had superb singles, such as this, they packed their albums full of bangers too. They really were one of the headline acts of the late 70's and early 80's. Copeland cites the drummers from Jimmy Hendrix experience and cream as his biggest influences which is apt as they were also three member bands like the Police. The drummer cannot sit in the background in a trio, they need to be an active part of the sound, not just the back rhythm.
Probably should hit Walking On The Moon next. One of the more unique hits ever, I’d say. Can’t wait to hear your reactions to the percussion! After that, I’d go with Driven To Tears, So Lonely followed by Can’t Stand Losing You.
I will never forget seeing The Police at the 1982 US Festival performing "Walking on the Moon" with a full moon rising above the hills beyond the back of the stage. Great memories indeed!!!
"Message in a Bottle", "Don't Stand (so Close to Me)", "Synchronicity", "Every Breath You Take" (about a stalker). They are fantastic live. Stuck to the songs as played on the album but did some amazing instrumentals.
"The Police are three virtuosos who happen to be playing at the same time." (Quote in an old Rolling Stone interview). Next should be Synchronicity just for Stewart Copeland.
I was 14 years old when Police brought out their first album. I remember lying on my back in my room and listening to it over and over. Glorious times. Stuart and his drumming ❤️ I saw them live in Essen, Germany in 1980. You can watch the concert here on youtube btw. Grugahalle. It was broadcasted live on German tv (Rockpalast concerts)
Next police songs" "When the world is running down"- sounds like Steely Dan a bit, "Driven to tears", "Wrapped Around your finger", "Murder by Numbers"- if you want something dark
Yes, I said it before. You guys MUST do "When the World is Running Down/Driven to Tears" together! It's a crash course in their instrumental brilliance.
The entire Homecoming album is a masterpiece! Moon Song, Don't Cross the River, To Each His Own, Cornwall Blank, Head and Heart, California Revisited, etc, etc, etc. Every song on that album is a work of art!
Sting - "Seven Days" is on my list of songs to take on a deserted island with me. But from The Police, "Synchronicity" or "King of Pain" or "Wrapped Around Your Finger"
One of my favorites! I have very fond memories of seeing Sting in concert (as a solo artist in the last 10 years or so, not with the Police) and the entire crowd dancing their heads off during this song performed as an encore. The many colored lights were spanning the crowd and we were all jumping up and down and singing along, especially near the end when it builds up and he sings, "On and on and on and... every little thing every little thing every little thing... every little every little every little thing she does, every little thing she do is magic magic MAGIC!" It was electric! 😄🎵🎶
The Police is one of the best 3 man, 3 piece band ever. Diverse in reggae, rock, punk, and smooth jazz- incredible. Stewart Copeland became such a great producer in music and movie scores.
Lead singer Sting's first solo album in the 80s' The Dream Of The Blue Turtles is a great album also. You would also enjoy one of the big hits off that album, If You Love Somebody Set Them Free.
I would suggest going back to some of their earlier stuff, and hit “Walking on the Moon”, “King of pain”, “Wrapped around your finger”, “Every breath you take”, “Synchronicity 2. Hey guys, how about a RUSH Wednesday with “Jacobs Ladder” off of Permanent Waves? See you then. 🎸
Just to keep things straight, you talked about their "earlier" stuff, but then 4 out of the 5 songs you listed are from their last album. I'm confused.
I’m a BIG police fan, and this is my favorite song of theirs. Love it! Next song for you to react to - Walking on The Moon, or, Message in a Bottle. Stewart Copland PHENOMENAL drummer. So active and so unique
"Driven To Tears" must always be directly followed by "When the World Is Running Down, You Make The Best Of What's Still Around." One just naturally leads into the other.
When the World is Running Down.... is a song which brings "instant happiness" to all listeners. Driving beat and a wall of sound guitar which was endemic to the Police sound.
So lucky to have grown up in 50s, 60s, & 70s. No music era can compare. Thank my Mama every day for always having music in the house. Music became my first love. This introvert that panicked with any public speaking was in her element when music was involved. Miss her so. 💔❤️🎶💙
This was a massive world wide hit in 1981/82-#1 in several countries. Remember everyone jumping up a down on the dance floor at uni-"yeooo, yeoo, yeoo!" Sting was the main songwriter and when he wanted to launch a solo career the band was done-he and drummer Copeland were constantly at each other's throats while making amazing music.
Finally coming back around to The Police! Everyone was saying we had to hit this one!! What a great song, what’s the next Police banger we’ve got to hit?! 🙌🏻🔥

Fun fact - it's returned to again in "Oh My God" from their next album, "Syncronicity", and again on "Seven Days" from Sting's solo album "Ten Summoner's Tales."
The Police's Spirits in the Material World is another great song.
Absolutely.
Perhaps my favourite Police song.
The album cover has the three faces of the band members: From left are Summers, Sting, and Copeland.
I always thought it was their stick figures dancing, but maybe it is there faces. Hmmmm.
never knew that little fact. interesting.
Andy on the left, Sting in the middle, Stewart on the right. Their faces are literally “The Ghost in the Machine”. Classic graphic design.
The next songs to do from the Police I think have to be either Message in a Bottle or Walking on the Moon
Really glad you both liked this. Many many gems by these guys
It took me a while to realize that they're basically reggae.
...all bangers all the time
The Police - Walking on the Moon, Message in a Bottle, De Do Do Do De Da Da Da
“Synchronicity 2” should be the next song by The Police. 5 min banger!
Great road trip song!!!
Make sure it’s TWO.
Roy Orbison had one the most amazing voices ever.
You should check out Chris Isaak’s cover. It’s a marvellous tribute.
Orbison's voice is Rock and Roll velvet.
My dad took me to see Orbison right before he passed. Still sounded amazing!
Stewart Copeland is phenomenal and not just his drumming. He is also a composer. His drumming is really what got me into the police originally.
“Every breath you take” was their biggest hit
No shit
Walking on the moon is such a great police song with Stewart Copland's drumming....its a banger
The police are one of the best, most original bands out there. Music like this didn't exist before them.Would love to hear "canary in a coal mine". You guys got to hit R.E.M soon! Another really awesome, original band🎸
Yes, R.E.M. is great. "Radio Free Europe", "Fall on Me", "It's the End of the World as We Know It", and "Orange Crush" are all excellent.
Absolutely! I would love to see reactions to their early work. Start with "Radio Free Europe", "So.Central Rain", "Driver 8", etc.
@@fusiliersyeah! Definitely start with early work. Excellent songs suggestions.
Stewart Copeland is one of rock's most creative drummers. Check out Walking on the Moon from this same album, it's very minimalist yet atmospheric with more amazing drumming.
After The Police, Sting's first solo album The Dream of the Blue Turtles is a masterpiece.
And Stings solo career was quite brilliant. His solo albums from dream of the blur turtles, right up to brand new day were sonically epic. He used solely world class, top notch musicians on his albums.
And got played in the best elevators all over the world!
It's good, but Murder By Numbers is Stewart's masterpiece, and that's how the Police ended their reign
Go back to the first album. Try: Can’t Stand Losing You
They need to listen to the live version from the 2008 tour, Regatta de Blanc is in the middle - it BANGS!
You're right, incredibly exciting song!! It's electrifying, and I agree, Copeland just kills and drives this song with an amazing energy - this is all about Copeland's outrageous feel
I'm 67 and I never tire watching the reactions of the music I miss so much u all keep digging for more gems we had it all.
Very well said!
they were huge in the early 80s...probably the biggest band in the world when synchronicity hit
Probably should hit Walking On The Moon next. One of the more unique hits ever, I’d say. Can’t wait to hear your reactions to the percussion! After that, I’d go with Driven To Tears, So Lonely followed by Can’t Stand Losing You.
So Lonely!
We’d get so high and listen to walking on the moon and it was fantastic…great song and great memories
I will never forget seeing The Police at the 1982 US Festival performing "Walking on the Moon" with a full moon rising above the hills beyond the back of the stage. Great memories indeed!!!
The Police was one of those rare great bands that had the foresight to break up before they started to suck.
Walking on the Moon is one of Copeland's most masterful tracks.
The Police and Rush are by far my favorite three-pieces.
Thanks for the reaction!
I haven’t heard this song since I was 4, now it’s coming back
"Message in a Bottle", "Don't Stand (so Close to Me)", "Synchronicity", "Every Breath You Take" (about a stalker). They are fantastic live. Stuck to the songs as played on the album but did some amazing instrumentals.
They did Don't Stand already. :)
Walking on the Moon, Copeland's hat work on that song is outrageous
"The Police are three virtuosos who happen to be playing at the same time." (Quote in an old Rolling Stone interview). Next should be Synchronicity just for Stewart Copeland.
They wanted to be a punk band, but they were too good at playing music.
This and "Video Killed the Radio Star" (the Buggles) seem to capture the onset of the 80's.
I was 14 years old when Police brought out their first album. I remember lying on my back in my room and listening to it over and over. Glorious times.
Stuart and his drumming ❤️
I saw them live in Essen, Germany in 1980.
Similar smooth groove.
“Synchronicity II” is a very dark song if you really examine the lyrics.
They need to go through the Sychronicity album, song by song
Yes, I said it before. You guys MUST do "When the World is Running Down/Driven to Tears" together! It's a crash course in their instrumental brilliance.
@@annave9114 Yes. Must do them together. Til this day, it's how I have to play them.
Would love to see you guys do a few songs by America - “Sister Golden Hair” “Don’t Cross the River” and “A Horse with No Name” are good ones
Also Sandman, Ventura Highway, Riverside and Three Roses 👍🏻
What about Ventura Highway - chewing on a piece of grass - walking down the roooaaad.
@@pleondidis aye, Sandman
Tin Man!
Good choices.
Yeah King of Pain of Driven to Tears should be next
When you can turn a pop song into this, you know it's well written. ruclips.net/video/KNlLQq93kNc/видео.html
Love Wrapped Around Your Finger.
Definitely need to hear "Demolition Man"! I'm sure many other listeners would love to see your reaction to that one. Peace and stay safe.
Lead singer Sting's first solo album in the 80s' The Dream Of The Blue Turtles is a great album also. You would also enjoy one of the big hits off that album, If You Love Somebody Set Them Free.
Saw the Police in the 80's with Bryan Adam's and Oingo Boingo. Great live band
The technical brilliance of Stewart Copeland. His hi hat and ride patterns are unmistakable.
The next Police song you should do is "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da." It's a great song, but it is indicative of the Police sound.
One of my very favorite by Police
One of my ringtones!
I’m a BIG police fan, and this is my favorite song of theirs. Love it! Next song for you to react to - Walking on The Moon, or, Message in a Bottle.
Stewart Copland PHENOMENAL drummer. So active and so unique
I love how Stewart plays hi hats with himself using the delay. It's magic.
Tea in the Sahara.....as a HUGE Police fan with alllll their amazing music...this is my guilty pleasure.
Love the Police. “Walking on the Moon is a versatile song for Copeland and very cool. Keep em coming. Please don’t “defund” The Police.
Only Copeland, N o mention of Sting, Tooooo Funny !
All Police fans together - E oh oh , E oh oh - you know the score!
Other good Police tracks:
Spirits in the Material World
Can’t Stand Losing You
Message in a Bottle
Driven to Tears
Canary in a Coalmine
The instrumental "Regatta De Blanc" is great too. 3 musicians going to town on the instruments they play.
Canary is such a vibe. I would throw that on in the car for my friend randomly and he loved it every time. It was fun.
"Driven To Tears" must always be directly followed by "When the World Is Running Down, You Make The Best Of What's Still Around." One just naturally leads into the other.
And invisible sun
Be my girl Dally
Bombs away
Voices in my head
GREAT ONE!!! and now another: "Mirror in the Bathroom" by the English Beat
That is an excellent suggestion. Also, Save It for Later, another good tune from the Beat.
I'll third that! And add "I'll Confess".
@@burmajones803 Yes, those are both good songs and they have many more.
Jeannette and Spar wid me! English beat excellent Ska-wave
Now you're talking dirty to me lol. English Beat is phenomenal 👍
Their best song. Thanks guys!
The album cover is actually their faces. It's Andy Summers, Sting and Stewart Copeland :-)
It's also inverted 666
SO magical and one-of-a-kind. I'm a stoical person, yet this song never fails to put a smile on my face.
