Hello my Brother. I’m a 52 year old African American male physician, husband, father of three, a LIFELONG ROCK MUSIC FAN and drummer. I Love your videos and greatly respect your reviews/reactions!!!!! Based on your reactions/reviews of bands such as Tool, Pink Floyd, Rush and your appreciation of the “musical journey” I respectfully recommend that you experience the artist Steven Wilson particularly the songs “Routine”, “The Raven who Refused to Sing”, “Pariah”, and “Drive”. Enjoy my Brother and keep the videos coming!!!
ELO has so many great songs see below but here is one that maybe you haven’t heard at work. It’s called Can’t get it out of my Head. One of their best in my humble opinion!
Exactly. It's one of my favourites of theirs, I hear all the other ones all the time on the radio and at my work. Then finally one day I heard Can't Get It Out of My Head and it was just amazing. I keep requesting it as well.
I always thought it was about love. That love is a living thing and it’s a “terrible thing to lose.” Such a great song. Those violins get me every time.
Gary Lindsey Well, I’ll back you up anytime you plug it & I see it!! The sad thing is they’re missing out, in a big way. With Jamel’s reactions as of late it’d be a great fit, too! It’s difficult when you’re up against 400K voices, that’s the primary thing ~ but keep trying!! You got a decent amount of likes, so, it’s promising!! I’ve loved it since I was a very little kid~ it’s way before my time, but my dad was a huge Beatles fan & had everything! I love his tribute to John, too, All Those Years Ago. Plus, many more.
The band’s lead singer and prominent songwriter, Jeff Lynne said, “I was even asked once if it was about a whale, Christ knows where that came from. It was just a song about nothing more than lost love….the words just rhymed, that all.”
You my young brother are a HERO to fans of "E.L.O."! At least you are to me. You check out a lot of a group's good songs like "Steely Dan", "Pink Floyd", "Led Zeppelin", and the Mexican & Latino singers. Like I've said before, you're doing a great job man, keep it going! Thanks.
In my own opinion, I think it's about love. Love is truly a Living Thing. It's like a Garden, you have to work hard to keep it alive and thriving, if you don't, it will wither and die, just like anything else that is alive, and that's a terrible thing to lose! Once it's too late and you've realized that love is gone and you've neglected that garden until it's too late to bring it back to life, what a dive you'll take!
Two live versions of this song, one filmed in London and the other in Philadelphia, are easily found on RUclips. Must see them! The beautiful violinists are a sight to behold!
Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra from The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame site: "Picking up where the Beatles left off, ELO expanded the concept of great melodies, epic song structures and grand orchestrations. ELO added an exciting mix of elements into rock and roll, including disco rhythms and electronic studio wizardry. Imagine a marriage of tuneful, rocking pop songs with instruments from the symphonic realm, and you’ve got the blueprint for what made ELO one of the most popular groups of the 1970s and beyond. Jeff Lynne, ELO’s vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, co-founder, and frontman, conceived of a rarefied musical sphere in which cellos coexisted with guitars, and where classically tinged progressive rock intersected with hook-filled, radio-friendly pop. The result: ELO’s boundary-breaking approach to rock that resonated with a global audience, both as a pop singles act and as album-oriented rockers with deep-track appeal". ruclips.net/video/sbg8aUn4YkA/видео.html
I don’t know what it was, but when I was nine years old and heard this song on my transistor radio, the violin melody used to scare me. I’m glad I got over my fear, I have loved ELO ever since!
How did you know that this song was running around my head since yesterday? And I hadn't even heard it for a long time! And then I see on my home page that you put out this video--good timing! Thank you! I believe it's about losing the living thing of Love.
Heard this back in Late 1976-early 77, and fell in love with it. This song, and Manfred Mann's cover of "Blinded By The Light" were my faves at the time.
Both of those songs are fantastic, but "One Summer Dream" always kicks my butt. I get REAL emotional when I play that one!!! "Face the Music" is an ace album!
I think the song is about doing everything one can to hold onto love. Plain and simple... but deceptively upbeat, like so many of ELO's exquisite arrangements. Jamel/Jamal, I hope you react to ELO's "Wild West Hero". It's so good! ✌️
I saw ELO at the Montreal Forum in 1976, and this was the encore song. They had 3 cellists on stage, plus the full band and a whole lot of lasers. This song is forever burned in my memory!
Very simple, love is a living thing. Thats it. I've been an ELO fan since I first heard Mr. Blue Sky. Jeff Lynne didnt hide what he was writing very often. The majority of his songs were up front and to the point lyrically. What you heard was what it was meant to be. He wrote songs and produced for many people, including Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, and George Harrison. Actually formed a "Supergroup" with them on Harrisons suggestion. John Lennon once said that ELO were what the Beatles would have become, had they stayed together. Thank you so much! Peace out and stay safe!

Watching your reactions to ELO has brought me into my umpteenth ELO Obsession™ in my life; they're all I've been listening to for awhile. I've been a fan since 1975, age 8, initiated my love for the string section in any song/piece of music which features strings. This song is eargasmic.
It's about loss of love. I highly doubt Jeff Lynne and ELO had a public statement about such a highly politicized and controversial topic, especially in 1976's pop rock scene. They weren't that kind of band.
So..... This song is about abortion ?? Jesus Fuck, usaa.. what kind of shrooms are you on? Cause that's the only explanation I can think of as to how you listened to this song and came up with abortion .. your self hate is actually kinda sad...

ELO were such a Big und the seventies and 80‘ here in Europe. So great Albums so many good Songs. Lots of Memories. And he Produced so many Great Albums for others. Roy Orbison, Traveling Wilburys, Xanadu, Tom Petty, The Beatles, George Harrison, Bryan Adams.
Thanks for this! Love this song. Haven't contemplated the meaning very much, so it was interesting hearing you speculate. I do love the contrast between the upbeat sound and the very serious, at times, lyrics. Blessings!
E.L.O always takes me back to childhood. I’m 29 and the best years of my life are the ones where it was only me and my mom, from about ‘94-‘00 in San Pedro. Anyway there was the best classic rock station in California, ARROW93.1, it mostly played tunes from the 60s and 70s but once in a while would play 80s rock, and E.L.O were one of our favorites...Sadly ARROW died one day...no joke, one day ARROW93.1 is on and my mom and I go to lunch and when we came back to the car turned on the radio and instead of music on ARROW was a steady heartbeat.
This may be the first ELO song I ever heard that I knew who was playing it, around 1976 or '77. Someday you have to play their incredible instrumental "FIRE ON HIGH". It got many hours of radio air time. Peace bro.
Jeff Lynne explained many times that the song is about loss of love. He let it slip out that it was about a bout with food poisoning that he battled while on holiday in Spain.
You are the only one l will check out first, just love your reaction take it for what its worth ,he was very good friends with the Beatles read about Jeff Lynn
U don't know how much of a blessing U r to all of us. We appreciate what U r doing to make us smile and be happy for awhile. The good Lord put U right where we needed U as a great outlet. Ty
Although this song was popular when I was in Junior High, it now always reminds me of the closing credits in the movie "Boogie Nights". And it's one of ELO's best.
Jamel i have been watching your video's since this terrible pandemic started. its been brilliant watching you discover what so many people of my generation took for granted. love your reactions to ELO. so many have requested that you take a look at 'Fire on High' I promise you it will not disappoint you. thanks
I grew up listening to E.L.O. thanks for bring the good memoirs. There was a musical called Xanadu in 1980... starring Olivia Newton-John, Michael Beck and Gene Kelly in his final film role... Newton-John had her songs on the soundtrack, but the rest of the soundtrack was done by ELO... Electric Light Orchestra. The album grouped Olivia Newton-John (ONJ) and ELO onto separate sides of the album, and some tunes were excluded from the album. The following is the actual order in the film: Instrumental medley of WHENEVER YOU'RE AWAY FROM ME and XANADU, over first part of opening credits WHENEVER YOU'RE AWAY FROM ME excerpt: Danny plays the clarinet on the beach at the break of dawn Instrumental underscoring of XANADU with Sonny drawing and painting Extended intro to I'M ALIVE (only a portion of which is in the soundtrack album) I'M ALIVE (ELO) from the film's album soundtrack as the Muses from the wall mural come to life WHENEVER YOU'RE AWAY FROM ME excerpt with Danny again playing the clarinet at the beach MAGIC (ONJ) from the soundtrack: Kira and Sonny have their first conversation while Kira is roller skating in the dark auditorium YOU MADE ME LOVE YOU (ONJ) (non-soundtrack LP track released as B-side of the SUDDENLY single): Featured on Glenn Miller record played by Danny in the ballroom of his home WHENEVER YOU'RE AWAY FROM ME (Gene Kelly and ONJ) from the soundtrack with Danny and Kira singing and dancing in the ballroom. This song was heavily influenced by Frank Sinatra. According to the DVD special, this was the last sequence filmed. SUDDENLY (ONJ duet with Cliff Richard) from the soundtrack as Kira and Sonny roller-dance through the props in the recording studio DANCIN' (ONJ duet with The Tubes) from the soundtrack: In the auditorium, Danny and Sonny imagine differing visions of their ideal club. Sonny's hard-rocking glam band and Danny's Big Band female trio lip-synching to ONJ's self-harmony musically and physically merge into a unified whole, leading to agreement on XANADU as the name of the club DON'T WALK AWAY (ELO) from the soundtrack during a romantic animated sequence featuring Sonny and Kira as fish and birds (animation by Don Bluth). ALL OVER THE WORLD (ELO) from the soundtrack: In the "franchised glitz dealer" store (the Beverly Hills Fiorucci), Danny runs through various dance steps and does some rollerskating as he tries on different outfits THE FALL (ELO) from the soundtrack: Sonny finds the Muse wall mural and roller-skates through its portal entrance into Xanadu to find Kira SUSPENDED IN TIME (ONJ) from the soundtrack: After Zeus sends Sonny home, a dejected Kira sings about her love for Sonny DRUM DREAMS (ELO) (non-soundtrack LP track released as B-side of the I'M ALIVE and ALL OVER THE WORLD singles) begins the Xanadu opening night roller disco sequence, with Danny leading the group on skates XANADU (ONJ and ELO): Kira sings and is reunited with Sonny FOOL COUNTRY (ONJ) (non-soundtrack LP track released as B-side of the MAGIC single): Kira sings and dances in various costumes with the other eight Muses backing her up XANADU reprise: Kira sings and dances with the other eight Muses. They disappear into the heavens with Kira following a moment later MAGIC (ONJ) reprise from the soundtrack as Sonny stares at the empty revolving dance floor, now disillusioned that Kira is gone Instrumental riff from XANADU: Kira (as a Xanadu waitress) and Sonny become silhouetted; "The End" XANADU (ONJ and ELO) short version over closing credits

Jamal, I'm telling you. "All over the world" is an absolute must-do from ELO.
This. Also “I’m Alive” and “Xanadu” from the same movie which of course leads into another certain artist.

Sailin' away on the crest of a wave
It's like magic
Oh, rollin' and ridin' and slippin' and slidin'
It's magic
And you, and your sweet desire
You took me higher and higher, baby
.
It's a livin' thing
It's a terrible thing to lose
It's a given thing
What a terrible thing to lose
.
Making believe this is what you conceived
From your worst day
Moving in line then you look back in time
To the first day
And you, and your sweet desire
Don't you do it, don't you do it
You took me, oh higher and higher, baby
.
It's a livin' thing
It's a terrible thing to lose
It's a given thing
What a terrible thing to lose
.
Takin' a dive 'cos you can't halt the slide
Floating downstream
So let her go don't start spoiling the show
It's a bad dream
And you, and your sweet desire
You took me higher and higher, baby
.
It's a livin' thing
It's a terrible thing to lose
It's a given thing
What a terrible thing to lose
It's a livin' thing
It's a terrible thing to lose

Thanks for this! Love this song. Haven't contemplated the meaning very much, so it was interesting hearing you speculate. I do love the contrast between the upbeat sound and the very serious, at times, lyrics. Blessings!
After being taken “Higher and Higher” by this woman’s love, the narrator falls (dives) into despair when their romance ends.
right, and it's a part of life "A Livin' Thing'
Peace bro.
It's just about love.Love is a living thing( It grows and changes), a giving thing AND a terrible thing to lose.
Jeff Lynne explained many times that the song is about loss of love. He let it slip out that it was about a bout with food poisoning that he battled while on holiday in Spain.
All of they're songs are awsome!!!!
It's about lost love... that love is a living thing. Very captivating song.
Soooooo many great songs.
Ty
Luckily got to see ELO live at Wembley Stadium London 3 years ago and was amazing the best concert I've ever seen
When i was 4 years old, in 1979, this was my favorite 8-track tape.
And we had disco roller skating.
This is my favourite E.L.O hit. I see some stank face during the harmonies! I want to see your face when you react to Crosby, Stills and Nash...
"Wooden Ships".
Suite Judy Blue Eyes
Both plus "The Lee Shore'" 👍
I had the pleasure to see ELO live in Philly last year...the concert was 10/10 AMAZING!!!
I love it, heard it on my first time on an airplane, with head phones , my husband had to get me high to get on the plane, it was a blast
one of the best, if not the best albums of all time, it really is that good
I've been listening to ELO for over 40 years and the string arrangements still blow me away.
I'm enjoying showing my 4 year old your videos and introducing my little one to the songs of my 70s childhood (older mummy)
Such an iconic voice! Much like Robert Plant, Jeff Lynne has such a distinct voice and tone! Instantly recognizable and always enjoyable!
Love ELO. Also love your positivity. Would like to hang with you sometime and listen to all kinds of music.
The diary of Horace Wimp is a classic by ELO. People should watch ELO at Glastonbury from around 2017. What a performance.
Thank you sir! Glad you reacted to this!
ELO were amazing! A definite Spanish/flamenco vibe going on in this song.
Although this song was popular when I was in Junior High, it now always reminds me of the closing credits in the movie "Boogie Nights".
And it's one of ELO's best.
We didn't have the lyrics back in the day, and I tend to not dwell on them much. The music itself is amazing.
Except on the cover!
I love ELO!!!
SHINE A LITTLE LOVE by ELO.....amazing
JAMEL......''Fire on High'' It is ''Different'' ELO in sound and style and SO GOOD!
As always, thank you! You probably have heard this song, but just in case... Level 42, "Something About You" ♥️♥️♥️ Wishing you a speedy recovery!
I have a song that not alot of people know about its a instrumental by Chuck Mangione from 1978 he wrote in for a title track for the movie of the same name called Children Of Sandchez its a very good song even if you dont use it check it out it very good.
You were right, song is about love. Jeff Lynne said this in an interview once.
This song is so BADASS. It's a shame ELO is so underrated. The Electric Light Orchestra is truly LEGEND.
The following is the actual order in the film:
Instrumental medley of WHENEVER YOU'RE AWAY FROM ME and XANADU, over first part of opening credits
WHENEVER YOU'RE AWAY FROM ME excerpt: Danny plays the clarinet on the beach at the break of dawn
Instrumental underscoring of XANADU with Sonny drawing and painting
Extended intro to I'M ALIVE (only a portion of which is in the soundtrack album)
I'M ALIVE (ELO) from the film's album soundtrack as the Muses from the wall mural come to life
WHENEVER YOU'RE AWAY FROM ME excerpt with Danny again playing the clarinet at the beach
MAGIC (ONJ) from the soundtrack: Kira and Sonny have their first conversation while Kira is roller skating in the dark auditorium
YOU MADE ME LOVE YOU (ONJ) (non-soundtrack LP track released as B-side of the SUDDENLY single): Featured on Glenn Miller record played by Danny in the ballroom of his home
WHENEVER YOU'RE AWAY FROM ME (Gene Kelly and ONJ) from the soundtrack with Danny and Kira singing and dancing in the ballroom. This song was heavily influenced by Frank Sinatra. According to the DVD special, this was the last sequence filmed.
SUDDENLY (ONJ duet with Cliff Richard) from the soundtrack as Kira and Sonny roller-dance through the props in the recording studio
DANCIN' (ONJ duet with The Tubes) from the soundtrack: In the auditorium, Danny and Sonny imagine differing visions of their ideal club. Sonny's hard-rocking glam band and Danny's Big Band female trio lip-synching to ONJ's self-harmony musically and physically merge into a unified whole, leading to agreement on XANADU as the name of the club
DON'T WALK AWAY (ELO) from the soundtrack during a romantic animated sequence featuring Sonny and Kira as fish and birds (animation by Don Bluth).
ALL OVER THE WORLD (ELO) from the soundtrack: In the "franchised glitz dealer" store (the Beverly Hills Fiorucci), Danny runs through various dance steps and does some rollerskating as he tries on different outfits
THE FALL (ELO) from the soundtrack: Sonny finds the Muse wall mural and roller-skates through its portal entrance into Xanadu to find Kira
SUSPENDED IN TIME (ONJ) from the soundtrack: After Zeus sends Sonny home, a dejected Kira sings about her love for Sonny
DRUM DREAMS (ELO) (non-soundtrack LP track released as B-side of the I'M ALIVE and ALL OVER THE WORLD singles) begins the Xanadu opening night roller disco sequence, with Danny leading the group on skates
XANADU (ONJ and ELO): Kira sings and is reunited with Sonny
FOOL COUNTRY (ONJ) (non-soundtrack LP track released as B-side of the MAGIC single): Kira sings and dances in various costumes with the other eight Muses backing her up
XANADU reprise: Kira sings and dances with the other eight Muses. They disappear into the heavens with Kira following a moment later
MAGIC (ONJ) reprise from the soundtrack as Sonny stares at the empty revolving dance floor, now disillusioned that Kira is gone
Instrumental riff from XANADU: Kira (as a Xanadu waitress) and Sonny become silhouetted; "The End"
XANADU (ONJ and ELO) short version over closing credits
❤❤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥my favorite ELO song.
Your look of apprehension in the very beginning was priceless! 😊🎶🎧
The first ELO song I ever heard and it is still amazing to listen to.
Totally agree...never get tired of listening to it...
They are magical, aren't they?? 😚
