    This song was a favourite of John Lennons'. He called ELO 'Sons of Beatles'

    • @bagelj
      @bagelj 4 года назад +27

      The whole idea of ELO was conceived by Jeff Lynne was to pick up where The Beatles left off. He thought they broke up too soon, there was much more they could have creatively written. But he imagined where the Beatles would have fit into the new decade that was the 70s. They came up with dazzling light shows with fluorescents, laser lighting, synthetic sounds, ect.

    • @dustywaynemusic6297

    • @davidmacgregor5193
      @davidmacgregor5193 4 года назад +8

      @@bagelj Sorry you are wrong from the beginning there, ELO was Roy Wood's original concept, not Jeff Lynne's. Roy Wood was writing songs for The Move in 1967 and 1968 that his producer Tony Visconti had added a string section to giving them a classical /pop fusion sound. Roy liked the sound that Visconti was creating and he thought wouldn't it be great to have a band with it's own string section who could play the music instead of paying session musicians. Meanwhile Jeff Lynne was toiling away trying to have some success with his band, The Idle Race, Lynne's producers Chevin & Offord were adding a string section to some of The Idle Race songs. Jeff too liked the sound and when he met Roy Wood and Roy told him about his Electric Light Orchestra project, Jeff asked Roy if the could come onboard with Roy's new band. Roy agreed to let Jeff to get involved in The ELO project, there was only one problem, Roy was contracted to EMI's Regal Zonophone label and Jeff was contracted to United Artists Liberty label. So that both songwriters could be contracted to the same label, Jeff agreed to leave the unsuccessful Idle Race and join Roy in The Move providing Roy retired The Move and went ahead with his ELO project. Jeff Lynne joined The Move in February 1970, between mid 1970 and early 1972, Wood and Lynne were writing for both The Move and ELO. Due to problems caused by the bands management, Roy Wood quit ELO in June 1972 and formed Wizzard, Wood took ELO members Bill Hunt and Hugh McDowell with him to Wizzard, Bill played keyboards and Hugh played cello and Moog synthesiser. In late 1973 Hugh left Wizzard and returned to ELO.

    It took 4 Beatles and George Martin to accomplish what Jeff Lynne has done musically all by himself. Of course, by popularity and commercially, The Beatles are no 1 but musically Jeff Lynne rules. I am a huge Beatles fan but Jeff Lynne is much better with Harmonies, Orchestration, as an incredible Producer, singer and songwriter. Long live Jeff Lynne's ELO!!! Please Tour in 2022!!!

      I would say that from Eldorado (1974) Face the Music (1975) New World Record (1976) Out of the Blue (1977) and Discovery (1979) was ELO's golden time. OotB being the pinnacle of that procession. Man, I've loved this band since the early 70s and finally got to see them in Manchester, UK in 2018. I was not disappointed. Jeff is still the master and still massively underrated. It's good that ELO are now getting the credit they deserved.

    Hey, man! I enjoy your videos a lot, dude. Thanks for doing these. In this video, you asked if you have to listen to a bunch of songs together to get a full story, and for ELO, off the top of my head I can think of two different albums that tell a full story. Those types of full albums telling one story are usually referred to as "Concept Albums."
    The first is Eldorado: A Symphony- that one is about a dude who is basically poor, homeless, and depressed, but he copes by living different fantasy lives in 'dream worlds.'
    The next one is Time- that one is about a dude who gets taken from the year 1981 by some time travelers into the year 2095.
    I hope that helps, man! I'm sure someone else has already suggested theses if you want a full album story.

    Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra from The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame site: "Picking up where the Beatles left off, ELO expanded the concept of great melodies, epic song structures and grand orchestrations. ELO added an exciting mix of elements into rock and roll, including disco rhythms and electronic studio wizardry. Imagine a marriage of tuneful, rocking pop songs with instruments from the symphonic realm, and you’ve got the blueprint for what made ELO one of the most popular groups of the 1970s and beyond.
    Jeff Lynne, ELO’s vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, co-founder, and frontman, conceived of a rarefied musical sphere in which cellos coexisted with guitars, and where classically tinged progressive rock intersected with hook-filled, radio-friendly pop.
    The result: ELO’s boundary-breaking approach to rock that resonated with a global audience, both as a pop singles act and as album-oriented rockers with deep-track appeal".

    I'm one step away from 70. My dad was a DJ when I was little. I would always request buddy holly...I was 3. It's such a gas to share all these tunes with you and see you melt into the music. Music is like oxygen. You are just a lovely man and you take my mind off all that tries my spirit. Thank you Jamal! Stay healthy. Oh! My main claim to fame is I saw the Beatles in person twice!

    Think Jeff Lynne’s had the naturally curly hair thing going since early 70’s!
    Know you’ve reacted to & enjoyed Travelin Wilbury’s....Jeff was part of that super group as well. Also has worked with and/or produced the Beatles, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison & Bryan Adams. Very talented in every aspect of music!

    I saw them in concert back in 1979(?). It's the best concert I've ever been to. The concert was in OKC Oklahoma, at the Civic Center. We didn't have time to get loaded. Best concert ever!!!!. Their light show was awesome too!

    Thank you so much for this video!!! ELO was one of my favorites back in the day, there was sooo many great bands. You're right when you express the fact of watching the performance live. This was WONDERFUL to watch and listen to.

    One of their songs from about 1986 called Sorrow About To Fall almost perfectly describes what's going on right now in the U.S. It's almost like they had a time machine and traveled forward to our time, saw what was happening, then went back in time to warn everyone with a song. Really appreciate your honesty and integrity. Something That's sorely lacking these days. I'm turning 55 next month, so you can probably guess which music I grew up with. Watching the absolute joy on your face makes it almost like listening to these songs for the first time. Thank you for rekindling my love of good music. Hopefully this will inspire people to getting back to making music for the love of it. Not just for money.

    I think people often don't pay attention to the "Orchestra" in ELO's name. That word means something. Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne most importantly wanted to showcase classical instruments in a different way. That to me is one of the main reasons why they are absolutely geniuses! Their arrangements are out of this world. If someone hasn't listened to ELO with headphones on yet or live on stage, boy, it's an experience! 😍

    Jeff Lynne's ELO is one of the very, very few bands sounding better live than on their records. They are this good. In the Summer of 2019, Forbes Magazine called Jeff Lynne's ELO "The Best Live Classic Rock Band In The World Still Touring". After seeing their shows in 2016, 2018 and 2019, I totally agree.
