hey thank you for this video i upgraded my ssd from the stock ssd to the 970 evo and now my machine runs beautifully ! You gave great instruction clear and easy to follow.
keep in mind this way you loose the recovery partition ! can you make a tutorial on how to backup the complete drive and keep the recovery partition ? or maybe even to copy it to the new ssd and then install from it ?
Great Video, the link helps a lot. It made me feel comfortable doing this. (saved me what best buy wanted to charge me to do this -$150) I used this video to help me when I first got this laptop, I didn't need to worry about transferring stuff because I wanted a clean slate. Advice to anyone attempting this: -If the windows tool kit does not want to work your usb flash drive, I found un-checking the quick format and completing a full format helps. -Ensure that you drag the downloaded tool to your usb flash drive to prevent any further complications when installing it to your drive.
ive had this for a month, I bought it for portability to take to a friends place. I bought it knowing the heat was crazy and to resolve it i generally just keep it capped at 60fps. it gets really hot when you let it go to 150fps and above. Its worse when you have the charger plugged in. I knew this when i bought it but other than heating ive had no issues and can recommend it for people who just want a laptop to be able to play at a friends spot without having to carry other gaming laptops that are way heavier. For people asking about battery life. When you have it in gaming mode the most you get is about 2 hrs depending on the game you play. When I have the GPU capped to 60fps it can go for about 4hrs and its significantly cooler. It takes about an hour and 45mins to fully charge, which is great IMO.
Same. I got it even though I knew about the heat problem. Most of the games I play anyway don’t drain the battery and it doesn’t get very hot. The performance is beast tho
I'm putting this to the test tomorrow but if you are worried about now being able to finder the right Wi-Fi driver for you machine - you might not need to get it in the first place. Also, if you go to Device Manager, Network Adapters you can find your exact Wi-Fi adapter name in there, search for it on the web if you need to. Mine's a Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160 MHz so I can get that from Intel's site, not Razer's. I'll see if I can remember to update this comment if I remember after dealing with the SSD.
If you want to have an EXACT COPY of your old drive, you want to image the drive using backup software. There are multiple companies that offer this, but I use Macrium Reflect (mostly because it's free). Asside from the unintuitive UI, there are few issues that I found while using it. The image backs up EVERYTHING on your hdd (it even backed up my cache and Chrome tabs) instead of just a few files here and there.
May be I'm missing something. But you can buy a M.2 to USB converter and clone your current HD ryt? Of course it is a little expensive. But I think it's a better option. May be I'm wrong.
Nice video, but, could save about 80% of the time and hassle by just cloning existing drive to the new drive using Samsung Migration software (free). (just need an enclosure - none of the other stuff) Super fast and simple. New drive will be ready to go as soon as you install it!
Not a knock on this video, but a concern with Razer. I used this video as a guide to just upgrade the hard drive. Puchased the Samsung 960 Evo, backed up Windows, and then went to take off the back panel. 9 screws came out, the 10th just spun. Back panel lifted off (without taking out screw) and found that the grommet (top-right next to screen hinge) was broken off.) I called Razer and they said that while the laptop is upgradable, any damage during upgrade (or cannot prove it was prior to upgrade) is not covered under warranty. They said they are warning people NOT to upgrade since this laptop is so new (I don't get that one.) I am about to send in the laptop to have them evaluate it, but I am not hopeful that they will cover this. They said it could cost $200 for the repair. I will comment back after things play out. Thanks for the video! This was just an unexpected turn in my upgrade that I wanted to share.
I need to go home now and figure which razeblade I have, cause I hope I have the one that I can upgrade my ram to 32 gigs. Just upgraded the SSD to 970 evo 2TB a few months ago and I love it.
A proper step by step representation video. Great job, but just one little thing you didn't explained how to get license for windows I mean you can buy one but what about the original licensed copy that came in the factory installed ssd ? Is there a way one can use that license key instead of buying a whole new key? Is it not simple to just clone the new drive with the factory installed one by using some software?
No need to buy a key. Windows now uses the device to determine if Windows was ever installed and automatically registers it for you even if you install a new drive :)
TheUnlockr :- Thanks for replying to my comment. I didn't know about this feature, it sure saves a lot of time. Learned a new thing today thanks once again. :)
you can buy it in SCDKEY. type in scdkey in google. It is microsoft windows 10 pro 64 bit for only 14$ only. that is a legit license key for your windows 10 pro. This is convenient if you are building your own Gaming rig (desktop). But for laptops who has pre-installed OS read his comment above. Thanks.
thanks so much for the tutorial, it works great! Didn't even have to use a mouse and the wifi was discovered during win10 installation. Pretty easy process!
Hey man, when we are in the boot menu and we do all what you said and we click to save and exit the PC are going to restart automatically or we need to push the power button?
An easier way I found is to get one USB with the windows installation tool, a backup HDD (I used a SATA HDD to USB hub thing), create a system image onto that, and then when i boot off the USB I use repair and the system image and then I get everything back + my new storage. Dont even need to install any drivers
Ended up not needing mouse, and not needing wifi driver. Trackpad and wifi drivers where included in the bootable usb key. Also no need to change UEFI settings. Press F12 at boot to choose the boot device.

Would it not be easier to get one those nvme usb drive enclosures, clone the drive and then just swap it out without backing up and manually installing windows again?
Simply use a NVMe Case for the old M.2 SSD and use Acronis to copy this old SSD to the new one! As simple as that! xD I'd rather keep the old SSD for backups! ;) By the way your Windows 10 licence is still valid! It's bound to the motherboard! :D

I was able to update my SSD because of this video. Now the only thing is that my laptop speakers don't work anymore. They were working when Cortana was walking me through the set up process but stopped once it was complete :(
oh man, I have so many problems with his windows install advice. Just go get macrum reflect on a flash drive and clone the stock ssd to the external drive, install the new drive, and use macrum again to clone it back. will make your life way easier
It's the same amount of time honestly and a just like the fresh install myself for a clean slate. If anyone wants to use a drive and copy things over go for it though. It's another good option.
I'm watching this because mine stopped working and I'm pretty sure the problem is the ssd, but I would like to do a total factory reset when i replace the ssd, how would I do that during this process? Do i just skip the step where ur backing everything up?
Hey! Great video, well explained. Could someone tell me how much time it takes for the entire process (including post upgrade driver installations)? Thanks in advance!
Instead of installing Window clean to the new SSD, is it OK to use something like Acronis disk imaging software to copy the OLD SSD to the new SSD using an external M.2 enclosure? Use to do this back in the day of HDD without too much trouble if I recall correctly.
Thanks for doing this. Can you please make a video on how to lower the thermals?? I just got the Fujipoly 1.5mm pads and am wondering how and where to install them.

if you bought the base you can put a full-size SSD/HD in there. there's free space for it in 2020 base model
