Thank you for this walkthrough. I always wondered about upgrading the main drive. I think I will upgrade it later on. Right now I’ve upgraded the 2nd drive to a 2 tb ssd, and put in 64 gb ram already. Your method if upgrading the primary drive is cherry on top!
I was able to add an 8TB NVME and thermals are great. Since you have two stacked slots for single side NVME you can remove the bottom one and put a dual sided NVME in the top slot. It does require you to trim the little metal plate (just left of the yellow sticker) that goes between the two in order to have a screw hole for the top NVME. I added some thermal pads underneath and above the NVME and have had no heat issues even on heavy workloads. I went with the Corsair MP600 PRO XT 8TB and simply removed the heatsync.
I bought the Sabrent SSD housing a year ago and love it. I replaced and older SSD and now that Sabrent is my travel 1 TB external drive at work! Love it.

Great video. I liked the comparison with the previous ram memory. It seems to me that the difference in terms of speed and latency is not relevant, when compared to the greater capacity.
That is exactly my thinking as well. If the 5600 was the same price then obviously I would get it but the 4800 is much much cheaper so a good alternative

at 6.33 task manager reporting that you are using 2 out 4 slots of memory... I wonder why) Maybe it's a bug, but an interesting one. Also you don't need a 5600 mhz ram, because Razer wrote in the specification section: 64 gb ram max capacity and speed will be downscaled to 5200mhz
Oh I didn't notice that! I expect it is a bug. And yes razer did say its limited to 5200mhz at 64gb but I want to test 5600mhz as Lenovo also said the same but people have got 5600mhz working on the legions 👍

Thank you for the great video! I was able to upgrade my Razer to the 64 GB 5200 RAM and two Samsung 990 PRO SSD NVMe M.2 Gen4. I bought a cloner and it didn't work for the C: drive. It copied over a Razer partition #5 that made the extra space either usable or I have to add an extra drive letter. Your suggestion to use the Samsung Magician software was the key I needed. The only issues with using that software was: I could not use the cloner to use the data migration tool. I had to open the laptop and replace the D: drive with the New drive then start the laptop. Then start the software, begin the data migration process. Wait to complete. Then turn off the laptop and replace the drives. After the data migration process it looks like it did not copy the extra 1000 MB razer partition # 5. This may affect the factory restore process in the future. The laptop is working great and I can see both drives using all of the space. I would recommend this process in the future.
Great video my Razer 16, 4080 model came yesterday and it is the best razer I've ever had, I don't mind the extra heft and the gaming performance is exactly what I was looking for, and I compared it to my 11th gen intel 3070 desktop. It beats it in most games and ties it in others, not using frame generation to make it a fair comparison. ie: cyberpunk, doom, Witcher 3, shadow of the tomb raider to name a few.
Thanks mate. And I still can't believe how powerful this system has been, it actually beats my 12700k/3080 desktop in certain games and apps! I haven't switched that machine on for a couple of weeks 🤣
@@MashITTech 😅 Before 2026 we are going to see huge upgrades in CPU efficiency and huge performance upgrades like Meteorlake(laptop only chips) and arrow lake will have biggest upgrades over 13 gen will launch within 6 to 7 months gap😂. I was tempted but I wanted to make this guide as easy as possible to follow, a fresh install with RAID drives is a lot harder to explain (especially as the razer drivers are not as easy to get hold of like Dell)
Great tip as always.. Did you ever get around to test the external laptop fans like klimt glacier or wiind ? I use one to play at hogwarts because the temp of my m17r4 was 100 all the time even when undervolting

sorry but that is a double sided SSD and therefore will not fit! 2tb drives are the limit at the moment until someone releases a decent single sided 4tb drive
@@MashITTech Thank you! We will just have to wait 👍 But just to be sure; a single double sided SSD cannot be used if I only put one SSD in the laptop, and leave the other socket empty? Sorry if this is obvious, but I just couldn't find out 😅
I am wondering if the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB is compatible with the Razer Blade 15 2022 laptop. Also, I would like to know if the installation process for the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB is the same as for the Razer Blade 15 2022 or if there are any specific steps that need to be followed.
Thank you for this detailed instructions. Can I add a second NVME m2 Samsung 990 pro with the heatsink? or it won't fit the sandwich design in this Razer Blade 16?
You Sir are an incredibly brave soul upgrading your Blade 16 with literally the two most problem prone SSDs on the market right now. I hope that the first thing you did was to upgrade the firmware on both. Could I kindly ask for you to update us on how the 990 and 980 are doing in terms of rapid health degradation and read/write speeds dropping off?
haha this is true but once the firmwares are updated (which mine are) I am sure they will be fine. I have been using Samsung drives for years and they have never let me down.....Yet 🤣 I will run a few tests shortly and let you know
Loved the video mate used a Firecuda 520 2tb I already had to add to the HD just ordering the 64gb from Crucial now - will the Razer Blade 16 take a 4tb HD if you know?
Yes but you will need a single sided SSD such as samsung 990 pro geni.us/4YjA Lexar NM790 geni.us/4s4c or crucial P3 Plus: geni.us/WqAzy9C I have ordered it from fastest to slowest but obviously faster are more expensive. In my Blade 16 I now have a 4tb 990 pro as primary and the slower P3 plus as a secondary drive where speed isnt as improtant for me
I don't think you can run 16TB on this Razer. I think the trick was, there are two slots with two cards. You have to remove both cards (2 single sided cards) and place 1 8TB (dual sided card) in the top slot. He then used thermal pads on top and bottom of the single 8TB SSD placed on the top slot sacrificing the bottom slot since there is no room. Unless you have seen a way to do it? If so please share!
Hey quick question….I have a razer blade 15 advanced and was wondering if I could still you the Samsung 990 (also do I have to buy the 990 and 980 or can I buy two 990’s?)
Hi, have you tested if there is a difference in cooling between the top and bottom slot please? I got a 990pro 4tb thanks to your review in my blade 16. I put it in the lower slot as my c: and the original 2tb on top as storage but I wonder if I should swap them for better thermals on the primary drive. Great reviews, thank you
If you use 5600mhz from same crucial brand. Performance will be ever more than box 5600 and 4800. Content work like video editing, 3d work also loves faster ram and more bandwidth.
This should be the case but Razer said the laptop wasn't capable of 64gb 5600, only 64gb 5200! I will be testing as soon as I can get my hands on a decent kit and make an update
@@MashITTech thanks. Must test 64gb 5600. They are lying. It will support 100%. Tech notice channel also tested 64gb on legion 5i pro 2022. Lenevo told that it will not support but he tried and it is working fine as it should without a single issue.
Is there a safer SKU of this? I don't care how much I spend but I just want one without problems. I returned my 1st one. The screen kept turning off and taking me to the lock screen while typing. It also was stuttering and freezing during RUclips videos. Also had screen flicker and I know there's a hotfix but that means you can only run in discrete GPU mode no option for Advanced Optimus. However I really would like a Blade!
@@MashITTech I purchased the 16 inch RTX 4080 with the 240hz / QHD+ from Best Buy. $3,599. I don't know if I should wait, or go for another SKU or just try the same again? The screen flicker wasn't what was described in the mini led, it just was going black and coming back.
hmmm sounds like you got a dud! speaking to fellow owners and the only moans I hear frequently are the mini LED retention problems and the 4090 version getting a hot palm rest. The Blade 18 has a lot of flickering problems too but I think Razer just sorted that with the new BIOS
@@MashITTech I'm going to buy it again. May I please know what updates (if any) you installed from the Razer website or if you just use it "as-is" out of the box? I see 3 updates (bios, firmware & screen flicker hotfix). Thanks.

I just picked up the razed blade 16 in silver for a little over 2k 13th gen with a 4080. Luckily I had two 4tb ssds sitting around for when I built a new pc but I’m gonna throw those bad boys in here.
Hi there, Love the content..... I have a question, does the blade 16 rtx 4090 support a 4tb SSD like on the two occupied slots can I replace 1 tb with a 4tb crucial p3 SSD and have a total of 5 tb?
Thank you for this tutorial. I was able to upgrade the ram no problem. I tried to undo the heat sink, I removed the screw, but it seems like there is another screw holding it down and I don’t know how to unscrew that. I am trying to put in two 990 pro SSDs. Is there a secret to that one screw that looks like you can’t use a screwdriver? It has a white “+” on it. Thank you.
there is 2 screws holding the main plate down, one at the end of the SSD and another near the connector. It has a sticker on it, just remove the sticker and its a normal Philips head screw 👍 if you get stuck add me on instagram and send me a photo
@@MashITTech Thank you for your help! I was able to upgrade my Razer 4090 and max it out! Quick question, when I first opened the laptop there was a small black strip/sticker on the side of the second stock SSD. Does that need to go back on to the 990 pro I put in? And does the sticker on the battery need to go back on? I left them both off. Thanks again
No and no :) The the foam block on the m.2 is a spacer whilst the slot is empty. And the battery sticker is no important. and sorry just realised I was logged in on our extra channel hence the different logo :)
What did you do with the plastic spacer around the retention point for the upper SSD? Leave it on or take it out? I feel like the drive isn’t sitting flush horizontal with the spacer on, but it wiggles vertically with the spacer off.
Hi, Received my Razer Blade 16 RTX4080 a couple of weeks ago. Thanks for the recommendation! Huge upgrade over my previous laptop with 1060 gpu and 10th gen cpu. I'm simply blown away with the performance. Just maxed out the storage with 2 x Samsung 990 pros 2TB. They are getting pretty hot under load one drive 75c the other 71c. I have also installed the Thermal Grizzly Minus pads which reduced the heat under load by about 3-5c. Could you tell me the temps you are getting with your two Samsung drives so I can see if the temps are abnormal. Normal running they are 49c & 41c. Thanks
Mine run a little cooler but that's under heavy CPU load and light disk activity. I will check whilst gaming and see what the temps are like. What are you doing when the temps are that high so I can compare?
@@MashITTech I was just running PUBG on Balanced mode. Peek was 78c (The laptop was also on the Razer Chroma v2 stand so no air intake issues.) but hovered 75c. The Samsung Magician software is providing the temp data. Ran Crystal diskmark and the temps where in the high 50's. So just seems to be in gaming.
@@Sir_Rabbits Did you end up figuring out a solution? Currently looking to spec out my Blade 16 and was planning to pair a 2TB 990 and a 4TB Crucial P3 Plus. 75C is way too hot for my liking though if you weren't able to lower it. Might just stick with a 980 Pro.
@@paulschlacter4181 I ended up redoing the thermal grizzly Minus Pad 8 on both drives and this dropped the temps by 4-6c. The OS drive is usually sits 6c higher than the second drive and does get hot whilst gaming 70c only after an hour and a half of play, generally sits at 60-65c for most games. Only PUBG makes the drive hit 70c. The temps with editing and general work sit around 38-45c. Benchmarking they sit 50-54c. The drives generally only get hot under significant sustained GPU loads. Ever since I have put the thermal pads on the drive temps are withing acceptable tolerances 90% of the time. Having 4tb of storage in a laptop with this sort of performance is a joy! I use it as a desktop replacement. Good luck with your purchase.
What kind of screw did you use for the second ssd on the metal bracket? My device came without a screw and I can't seem to find a suitable part for it.
I am thinking about getting the 16 inch Razer laptop here with its unique duel resolution/refresh rate mode and only can get the 32 GBs with a RTX 4090 in the laptop on Razer's website right now (not really sure why they don't have 64 Gbs on offer). Just to confirm the laptop only supports 2 slots for a RAM upgrade right and not 4? Also if you get the duel M.2 option with 1 tb + 1tb from Razer, what is the speeds on that SSD?
Yes, you only get 2 ram slots, you will need to remove your 2x16gb sticks and replace with 2x32gb sticks. The SSDs are usually OEM Samsung or equivalent and have read/write speeds of approx 7k
Just got this laptop and also need 64 GB upgrade very soon for my development needs. I see on the razer site for this model you can upgrade up to 5200MHZ with 64GB.
@@MashITTech I bought the same Kingston Fury 64gb 5600mhz and installed it on my 23 blade 16, but it only run at 5200mhz, Do I need to make any specific settings?
It won't fit double sided SSDs which as far as I know all 4tb and above SSDs are :( I am constantly on the search for a single sided 4tb SSD and will certain let everyone know when I finally manage to find one
@@MashITTech Ahh man! The reason I ask is because I saw a crucial 4tb ssd on amazon that "it said" to be a one sided 4tb which supports m.2 2280. (Only downfall is that the read and write is in the 3000 range, not as great as the Samsung).
Hmm, do you know which model it was? I would even consider that drive for my games drive and keep the faster drive for OS just to increase the space 😀 I am sure we will see single sided gen 4 4tb drives soon but man am I impatient
thanks mate, and damn I had no idea the p3 plus was single sided, I just picked up a 2tb recently to see how it performed, if I had realised I would have bought the 4tb :(
You can do this when ever suits you. Because you are cloning the drive it will take over all You settings and programs so will be exactly where you left it on the old drive 👍
even with this walkthrough i am nervous to do this lol... but i am running out of space on my 2tb 16 already so i need to do this eventually... i may just get a 4 tb SSD and keep the current SSD in there, 6 TB should be enough.... i'll do the ram another time not sure i need to do all that yet
It really is very straightforward and you can add me on insta and start a chat if you need help. Also since releasing this video there are some good single sided 4tb SSDs so it would be very easy to add just a second 4tb drive now (becareful as some 4tb drives are double sided like the SN850x and Seagate firecuda)
HELP! Literally followed this video step by step however, my Samsung Drive Magician doesn't seem to recognise my 990 Pro's? Drive health keeps showing as N/A. I've tried looking for ACHI in Razer BIOS but can't see it anywhere. Any advice? (Both Drives still function and appear on disk management, everything works perfectly just can't see them in Drive Magician!)
Same on this one. 2tb single sided per slot, so 2x2tb total. Someone has mentioned the sn850x 4tb may be single sided so I will try and get one to test in the near future

The cables are quite stiff but you are worried about breaking the cable you can carefully do it without unplugging it (I always do it without but have to show the correct way in videos)
5600 Mhz is only possible in any Capacity lower then 64 so 32 or 16, 64 max is at 5200, its limited by the CPU, so no need tho buy that really expensive Kit... in Germany its said on Razers Website as well...
if you add a second SSD one back in windows you just need to go into disk management and initialise the new drive and then format it. With regards to the ram, the laptop has 2 slots, if you have 16gb and want to add another 16gb then unfortunately you need to remove the 2x8gb chips and install 2x16gb chips.

@@MashITTech 😅
Before 2026 we are going to see huge upgrades in CPU efficiency and huge performance upgrades like Meteorlake(laptop only chips) and arrow lake will have biggest upgrades over 13 gen will launch within 6 to 7 months gap😂.
Arrow lake will be most exciting laptop chips. I have many things to tell according to "red gaming tech" but lets wait for the best.😊
Congrats bro for razer blade

Oh and I just realised you said you used 4tb sn850x, does that mean they are single sided? I thought they were double sided
Why didn't you put two of the same ssd - 2x980 or 2x990 and combine them in raid0?
I was tempted but I wanted to make this guide as easy as possible to follow, a fresh install with RAID drives is a lot harder to explain (especially as the razer drivers are not as easy to get hold of like Dell)
Thanks for this! Looking at doing the same with my 18
18 is almost identical except the ssd are not stacked and it can support double sided ssd’s so 4tb and above drive fit fine 👍
What 4tb SSD would you recommend for the 18?
The best performing 4tb is the SN850x: geni.us/8iFJTh7
Great tip as always.. Did you ever get around to test the external laptop fans like klimt glacier or wiind ? I use one to play at hogwarts because the temp of my m17r4 was 100 all the time even when undervolting
Funnily enough, I am just covering that in the deep dive. Spoiler but the cooler I bought made no difference and was worse than elevating the rear. Which one do you recommend?

It works perfectly and exactly the same procedure 👍
Thank you for this detailed instructions. Can I add a second NVME m2 Samsung 990 pro with the heatsink? or it won't fit the sandwich design in this Razer Blade 16?
you need bare drives. Heatsinks will not fit at all! the second drive comes into contact with the thermal pad on the base 👍
In my Blade 16 I now have a 4tb 990 pro as primary and the slower P3 plus as a secondary drive where speed isnt as improtant for me
Crazy that you can have a laptop with 16tb of storage absolute game changer if you love having 4K blue rays on your laptop

You can buy 2x 990 for sure. I was just trying to save a few quid as I don’t need as much speed on my second drive 😀👍

If you use 5600mhz from same crucial brand. Performance will be ever more than box 5600 and 4800.

This should be the case but Razer said the laptop wasn't capable of 64gb 5600, only 64gb 5200! I will be testing as soon as I can get my hands on a decent kit and make an update

I took it off, it should just have the screw on the top SSD and the thermal pad attached to the base plate sits on the drive when you screw it back on

not so far with mine but my Samsung ssds do seem to run pretty cool
Hmm interesting, I guess there is a large build up of heat from the GPU. I play a lot of PUBG so will monitor it next game :)

I see on the razer site for this model you can upgrade up to 5200MHZ with 64GB.

how much tb ssd does a single slot can use, like in some laptops its said that it is 2tb per slot

if you add a second SSD one back in windows you just need to go into disk management and initialise the new drive and then format it. @@MashITTech I recently returned my Zephyrus G14 because of Asus incompetency regarding updating AMD AGESA code. Still have fTPM stuttering 1 year after release. They completely dropped the ball on micro code updates on their laptops.
I however wanted something with 2 nvme slots, so the 14 inchers is not really an option anymore. I have been looking at the 15" laptops, and I also want DLSS3.0 and FG to future proof it a bit since I am using dual ultra wide setup, so I am fine with paying a premium. It's just.. the size. I poked around a bit with the Blade 15, and I don't think it's that big, I guess.
The razer is capped at 5200mhz ram
Tell that to my 64gb fury 5600mhz ram I am running at 5600mhz 😀👍
You can't run 5600 ram at 64 GB. Max speed the 2023 Razor's will run at is 5200 when using two 32GB modules. So don't buy anything over 5200. Crucial have 64 GB at 5200.
Actually I have since bought the fury 64gb 5600mhz kit and it runs fine at 5600mhz 👍
Maxing the F out of that machine… 👍🏻💪🏻

Good to see you :)
This video is way better than the normal crap you make
haha thanks
Not really recomend razer, always had problems with their laptops and mice, now using dream machines also on rtx 4090, at least feel quality 😝
Why do Razers have such horrible reviews? Its hard to find 1 on Amazon with thats not under 4*
Ok I got the ssd installed. WD black works the sabrant 4 tb is not showing up my laptop ? Any idea why. It has all my paid software. And the screw stripped. Need help on how to remove it
hey mate. which sabrent did you buy? I haven't tested the sabrent but there is no reason it shouldn't work. add me on instagram and start a chat I will try and help you. insta is mashittech
Is a repasted worth it?
the factory paste job is pretty good. Only repaste if you can get some top tier paste or ptm7950 thermal pad
I need more details on how to disconnect the battery a computer shop want to bang me $150 just to swop out the ssd. I already move all the data on to the new ssd 4tb
150! that's disgusting. Add me on instagram if you need a hand
How to disconnect the battery before replacing ssd
its pretty easy, remove the sticker then using your nail and a pry tool each side of the cable connector pry away from the slot as in the video
@@MashITTech it doesn’t move. I try d to it s stiff
That 64 gig ram is expensive. I think I’m keeping the 32 gig just for gaming manly and something I do home movies editing
Does this void the warranty?
Nope. As long as you do not damage anything through negligence they are more than happy for you to upgrade the ssd and ram
