Kudos to Gilles Peterson, founder of the Acid-jazz record label that brought us so many new sounds during this period. 4hero, live, performing this inspiring music, until today, really, nothing ever replaced it, this unique classy mix of Jazz and D&B is still driving me as a musician. I mean: with a zillion musicians on stage, come on: when does it happen anymore those days? Hooked to this vibe for life.
Other people who completely understand it are amazing. Your private pleasures will be shared. Hold it down. "If I was to believe everything you said I'd end up believing the grass is red."
I have loved 4hero since the 90’s. I have listened to Nuyorican Soul’s album The Remixes for the last 15 years. Black Gold of The Sun (4hero remix) is my funeral song. I’ve been a fan of Gilles Peterson for 20 yrs. How in the world have I only just stumbled across this 😂🤣 ❤️❤️❤️
Turning 48 this strange year, this is, will be, and was my best livegig ever. When I listen to Ursula I stil got shivers. Thx 4hero and the great late Claude Nobs, and of course all the musicians! Not forget to mention Giles Petetsson
A fellow 48 year old here, born down the road from whence 4 Hero was borne. Regarding Ursula, if you haven't heard this it's a big recommend my friend... King Britt & Ursula Rucker - Circe (Original Mix) [Guidance, 1999]
Just fuckin incredible I have been into this since 92.the start.still have my dreamscape jacket am 45 and just will never get bored of it.labello Blanco .Kenny ken .fantazia .jump up.hard step.stevie hyper.dont question me.a know my shit and so should the youth!!it's bliss
For the sake of being pedantic, this is a live performance of a segment of the remix that 4hero did for Nuyorican Soul's reinterpretation of Rotary Connection's classic song. Always was, always will be, dope AF.
I played a gig with 4Hero at a rave calling FREEDOM in Motherwell back in 1990, I think! They were cool as fuck and put us on their Reinforced mailing list, which was real hard to get on! I got sent some cracking 12"s over the years!
Very very nice concert I feel each one performing in this track has given out his & her s best of efforts , including even the smallest of notes played and , of course Dego keep playing , I love your music v much God bless your SOUL along with the Noricans. Ursula too.🌈❤️❤️❤️👌👌👌✌🏻✌🏻👏👏👏👍👍👍🌹🌹🌹
Wrong, check out Yussef Kamaal, Alfa Mist or Kamasi Washington (to name a few) if you like this kind of stuff. Kendrick’s To Pimp a Butterfly and Untitled Unmastered is amazing too.
Furthermore they are playing a remix they did for Nu Yorican Soul aka Masters At Work doing a cover of Rotary Connection ft Minnie Riperton's 'Black Gold of The Sun'. The Nu Yorican Soul project was also signed to Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label amd was reportedly inspired by Gilles Peterson's jazz room sets at the Southport Music Weekender in the early 1990s.. so hopefully that explains the connection! :)
i dont understand the drums of this tune, what is that. some sort of time sig fuckery? quantisation? how do they get that feel to the break, you can try to program this, the exact same rhythms, but it comes out robotic whereas this has a loose feel to it and fits perfectly and organically
Can't say for sure with this track, but when I tryna sample live music from funk bands, I realized the tempo was dynamic; it would naturally ebb and flow between phrases. Even two identical phrases were sometimes played at slightly different tempos. it wasn't much like a 5 bpm diff at the absolute highest, but I never would've noticed if I wasn't trying g to fit music to a singular tempo
There's a lot of dynamic variation in his playing, that is different hardnesses of hitting. This gives the whole pattern a sense of being a spoken sentence rather than a fixed pattern. You need a sensitive sound engineer for that so that you don't get compressed and gated to the point that all the expression is lost. It's also something that's much harder to do on a drum machine because it's then disconnected from your instinctual expression of the phrase.
Just arrived at this vid , quality!! Need to know , is this THE 4Hero from back in the rave days that did Mr Kirks nightmare etc on Reinforced Records???

Is that Giles Peterson introducing them? 🤔
yes he is
most definitely - Black Gold of the Sun seems to be a fave of his - played on his various shows over the years by MANY artists :)
Yes they were signed to his label Talkin' Loud in the 90s
I remember hitting Dingwall dancefloor back in the day, showing my age now! 🤣

If you're talking about the first half, the counting is three bars of four, with some syncopation to blur the structure a bit

Need to know , is this THE 4Hero from back in the rave days that did Mr Kirks nightmare etc on Reinforced Records???
Yes! THE 4Hero. If you don't know it already, check their album Two Pages from this era.
What say u?
2:24 quien es ella ? es hermosa.
She is a Slav
Great song. The guitarist screws up the intro slightly at the end though! Nerves must have got to him.
Mr Cook
LooneyBinJim Mr. Kirk.....come on now!
Not a remix. This is a cover of Rotary Connection. Disturbing how much I see this masterpiece as being credited to 4Hero. It’s a cover.
Very Zero7 The strings saved it a bit. Try The Rotary Connection...
Lol. Very Zero 7? I love Zero 7 but this shit came out 3 years before Simple Things
Terrible
Boring
