  • In todays video I wanted to see what would happen if you only painted with two primary colors instead of three and used a secondary color as the third primary. In this painting we used a muted blue (prussian blue) a muted red (indian red) and a very bright secondary color (cadmium orange) The results were shocking! I highly recommend trying this out for yourself. Follow along as we cover how to quickly sketch in architecture in a landscape, blocking in colors and tones, and making last minute drastic changes to your painting if you're not happy with the results!

What is the advantage of using only two colours?

It is three colors but only two primaries and using a secondary color to replace one of the Triassic primaries. (In this case Orange is replacing yellow) one of the advantages is that it will result in new and interesting color combinations. This painting had very weak but warm greens. I know greens are hard to control and make interesting. By using this triad of colors it allowed me to focus more on tonal values, not getting overly saturated greens and created an interesting color gamut for the sketch overall.
