Great video and I enjoyed your thought process as you went through the different thumbnails.
I also have a tendency to want to jump into details before I have a composition established.
A 10 minute thumbnail would also help with plein-aire since there are very few perfect scenes.
    Thanks for the insights!

Thank you Steven! I appreciate your comments and I 100% plan on applying this to plein air pieces. Something I’ve been experimenting with is thumbnailing *after*I do a plein air piece, and then trying to do it even better in the studio a second time. That will probably show up in a future video one of these days. This thumbnail technique has been really rewarding to me because I want to get this painting right.

@@DannySabraArt Such a great idea to illustrate this scene. It's really brought the story to life.

Totally random question but- I’m looking into fountain pens. Do you have any suggestions. I want something I can refill on my own. Thin lines and doesn’t bleed? There are just so many options out there and I don’t want to buy 50 and hate them all 😆. For pen and ink sketching.
    😊

Love this question! Bleeding is usually paper related so make sure you’re using paper that’s for fountain pen inks, or a very smooth paper. Unless you mean a leaky nib in which case usually that can be fixed by pushing it back in. That can happen to any fountain pen.
If you want a good cheap pen I really like the Jinhao pens. You can get them for about $5 but they draw and feel like a high quality pen. I want to get another as I lost mine.
But my favorite one of all time is the Twsbi Eco. It’s about $33 bucks but feels so good and you feel the quality. I do all my writing and drawing with this pen every single day. It’s just a pleasure to use and it’s very easy to refill. It’s about as much as I’d ever want to spend on a pen but I’d say it’s 100% worth it.

As for thin lines just make sure you get a fine nib and you’ll be good. I actually use a stub bib which is the largest job twsbi sells but it allows me to get thin and thick lines. That’s something you might have to experiment with. I’ve never done it but you can buy nibs on their own and swap them but that can get a tad messy. Haha

Thanks Danny! I knew you would have good advice for me! I want to use time for my watercolor set up instead of the micron pens as they aren’t refillable 🙁 I love the micron pens but I want to be environmentally friendlier. And I want to try a fountain pen with white ink! I have a dip pen and white ink that is so fun in the studio. So I want one I can take plein air too.
Perhaps the bleeding ink won’t happen so bad in my watercolor sketchbook then?

white would be really cool! I've used white gel. pens before which are nice, but nothing beats the feel and customization of fountain pens. As for bleeding, it probably won't happen if the paper is good quality or has cotton content... but it might depend on the texture of the paper as well. @@momopaints
