    When a woman is killed in a feminicide or r*ped , I hate when people say “she was someone’s daughter” as if she wasn’t her own person. Her life was valuable because she was a human being, not because she "belonged to someone”.

    • @rohegarcia2802

      The comment she was someone’s daughter isn’t to say that she was valuable because she was owned by someone, I don’t know if you know this, but parents don’t own their kids. That statement is made to better empathize with the person and situation. Most people don’t really see how devastating themselves dying would be to others, so saying that she is someone’s daughter, brings into perspective how horrible it is, since no one wants to loose a their child.

      Exactly! It's like, I'm sorry you get some bad looks on the street and a harsher look into your employment. But victims look over their shoulder at night, trembling in fear. Some get startled and terrified when touched unannounced, some try to disappear as much as possible, they become insecure, they see themselves in the mirror and break out into a panic attack because they see invisible handprints, or feel invisible heat, or pain. It is hell to be a survivor every day.
      But hey! No one looks at me hatefully, most people don't even know in fear that they will judge my inability to protect myself and want some sort of attention for some messed up reason.
      The pitying looks are a pain when they know, but that's just the cherry on the mess that is sexual assault. I'm just one of many, and I was lucky to have it easier than others.

      It's also untrue. There are so many cases where the rapists don't get convicted due to lack of evidence. Nothing happens to them. And then they go on to assault more - Bill Cosby, Larry Nasaar, Weinstein. That statement is a red herring, meant to derail the conversations about rape. It also tries to silence victims into not coming forward, which is already a huge problem. So if you ever hear someone say this genuinely, I would stay the fuck away from them. Its malicious.

    One thing I love about Promising Young Woman (one of my fave movies now) is that it never eroticises sexual assault. In many movies and TV shows that centre around rape, they either focus on it for a concerningly long time, or they use it as character building. Promising Young Woman shows that rape doesn't make women stronger- it crushes them. Both Nina and Cassandra were promising young women- and while the men were allowed to prosper, the women they impacted were not emboldened by their assault but ruined. As a victim myself, it felt kind of cathartic to see how it ruined people rather than making them better.

      What I love is that all the "good guys" justified their actions by their young age, yet every single one of them repeated their exact roles as grown ups.
      Al r*p*d Nina and k*lls Cassandra, the active criminal. He blamed both the víctims. The friend(forgot his name) records the first crime and helps cover up the second one, he encorages Al in both, he is the accomplice, not the agressor but just as guilty. Ryan was just walking by when he witnessed what was being done to Nina, and even though he wasnt' an active participant he didnt do anything yo stop it and kept quiet afterwards. Just as he did knowing Casa, HIS GIRLFRIEND went yo the party and what probably happened. Also kept interacting with the criminals like nothing after both events. He is the "not all men" , that even though he loved the women in hisblife ir whatever, he just lets things like that happen submissively knowing it's wrong, just keeps quiet and does nothing yo help, and believes himself when he says he's a good guys like the rest. But he's just another type of accomplice and a coward. Prefers to be at peace with the monsters than have the balls to take action, stand up the women he claims he loved, or even just socially condemning and not associating with them. Literally won't do even the tiniest shit.
      And Cassandra, even though she couldnt do anything right away, she won't just take ir, she delt with it even if it meant sacrificing herself and ended up bringing them down. It's a great analogy of a Lot of profiles contexts and dynamics we are discussing nowadays, and the hope un the film is to show that even if it takes time, even if more of us fall, we are no longer silenced, we won't take it anymore. You come at us, and we'll bring You down with us. You *DECIDE* to interfiere with and ruin someone's life by a selfish second of "pleasure"? Well... Be better or be ready.

      I sort of feel like this misses the unfortunate and disturbing reason that the statement is necessary to sway some people. It's not because they don't think r*pe is disgusting or horrible, but a rather unfortunate case of a deep seeded cultural coding of 'the woman as temptress' running head long into attribution bias; more specifically fundamental attribution error.
      Attribution bias is a cognitive bias relating to how we evaluate behavior in ourselves and others, with fundamental attribution error referring specifically to how we all tend to view the actions of others as indicators of their disposition rather then resultant of circumstance, with this bias growing more pronounced the less we know about an actor. The popular example is that if YOU or someone YOU KNOW cuts someone off in traffic you're more likely to point to the situation, 'We were running really late', 'I haven't been sleeping well and I guess I misjudged the distance', ect, while if someone else cuts YOU off 'that asshole needs to learn how to drive!' However it is equally applicable to r*pe allegations, where an observer is unfamiliar with either party but has been primed by society at large to wonder if a woman was 'asking for it', which is why 'imagine it was X' is so effective in swaying people; it removes perceived ambiguity of character by saying 'you KNOW your sister wouldn't have been 'asking for it, so why do you think SHE was?' Faced with a challenge to their cognitive bias, which arises from what is essentially a 'mental short cut' we are all wired with, many people realize 'actually, I don't know why I defaulted to that?' and while not everyone follows that to an 'I was wrong' enough people do that the phrase has clearly shown itself to be a successful tool for confronting that mental bias.
      TL:DR In short, it's not a phrase arising from a belief that 'r*ape is not bad, actually' or a lack of care for other human beings so much as one targeted towards countering a specific kind of cognitive bias WE ALL possess (Attribution bias; Fundamental attribution error). If we want that to change we need to confront and unravel long held (literally biblical here in 'the west') cultural tropes of women as creatures of temptation to shift the attribution of what I'm going to refer to as 'characteristics of fault' away from the victim. Until that trope is no longer living rent free in our schema of the world 'imagine if it was X' is the best tool we have for confronting and stripping back that bias in people not prone to thinking past it on their own.

    I personally really like this movie. However, I've noticed a trend of people, particularly women, hating on it purely because it's not what they wanted. Like, some are getting ANGRY because she wasn't killing people. they keep asking what's the point. All these people just miss the point of the entire movie.
    Emerald Fennell has stated multiple times she didn't want to make a stereotypical rape revenge film because it's been done before. She wanted to show how an ordinary woman, not an assassin, would try to take revenge. Calling the movie bad because it's not what you want is just immature. It's fine to not like a film, it's not perfect. But no one has a right to tell her what kind of film she should make.
    She wasn't killing the men at the beginning because that's not the story that was being told, It was to show how unproductive and self-destructive Cassie's life had become. Fennell used the end to show what would happen if an ordinary woman tried to act like an assassin. She'd die.
    Some films show how life should be. Others show life as it is. This film depicts the latter. The ending is supposed to make you frustrated, she succeeded tenfold.

    • @flawedsanity
      @flawedsanity 3 года назад +198

      Precisely. I think this movie was very much needed. We've gotten a lot of rape revenge movies before, but none of them are usually like this.
      If anything, this movie is incredibly, incredibly good because of how realistic it is. I cannot believe people are mad that she didn't kill people. I mean, I can believe it, but.. like you said, they're missing the point.
      Revenge is very self destructive and this movie does an amazing job of portraying that. Fennell did a wonderful job.

    • @thgritic102
      @thgritic102 3 года назад +114

      Exactly this. I was upset with the ending, but also glad it went that route because that's how it would be in real life. If a woman were to try and recreate the typical revenge stuff in movies after something traumatic happens, the likelihood of her getting overpowered/overwhelmed by a cornered wolf basically would happen. It wouldn't turn out like it would be in other movies unfortunately.
      Instead, there needs to be a calculative approach instead. Gather evidence, trust someone to send it out if anything happens to you by a certain time frame, be strategic! Too many movies are focusing too much on "women must be strong" vs "women must be strategists" because that would definitely get you further in the real world while strength is backup. Cassie let negative emotions consumed her, and unfortunately, died because of it causing her to plan irrationally, but she did came back around with a backup plan in the end because she knew she was thinking irrationally.
      This is coming from a woman.

    This movie gave me the worst punch in the gut I've felt in years. But the more I thought about the ending, the more I realized, that was the point. We want to get a Kill Bill, I Spit On Your Grave revenge ending we want to see and have seen already, but that isn't reality. Cassie mindfucks with people, but they could still just go back to old habits.(There was a deleted scene where Cass has a bruise on her hand, implying not every night went well) Plus we needed to really feel how Cassie felt over Nina's injustice, so when we see her own, he step in her shoes in the harshest way. Plus Cassie forgave the defense lawyer bc he was actually remorseful, he admitted wrongdoing, specifically too, he had already quit his job by that point . While on the opposite, Ryan just wanted immediate forgiveness and to be thought of as a good person. The difference is noticable.

      @cloudae I know it wasn't Fennell's original ending, the other was too bleak for the financiers.
      I choose to look at it this way. It took Cassie getting murdered for the police to do anything. That's quite true to life, especially after what happened to Sarah Everard. The police officer accused of killing her was reported shortly before for indecent exposure, but nothing was done until he was arrested for murder.
      For me the satisfaction doesn't lie in the police showing up. It's in the faces of the men once they realise what's happening. It's a hollow catharsis, which I think it appropriate for this film.

The entire movie we are just hoping that he’ll be a good person, even with the seeds of doubt we have against him. And its just SO disappointing when he turns out to be like all the rest in Cassie’s eyes. I know myself, even at the end, I was YELLING at the tv for him to just DO THE RIGHT THING. And he doesnt. Right. And that’s only in terms of the law, not everyone has to personally live by that “the justice system is always right” mindset. • @jomaq9233
      @jomaq9233 Год назад

      I think the idea of this argument is intended to be that the accuser should be doubted by default because they’re the ones making the claim, so the burden of proof is apparently supposed to be on them, and the logic being that it’s less bad for someone who turns out to be guilty to be free than someone who turns out to be innocent to be punished
      But that’s all in theory, in practice, it just serves to ignore just how pervasive sexual assault can be, and how outdated societal standards perpetuate that kind of culture, and frankly, most people wouldn’t just lie about something as serious as that, so always assuming that the accuser is lying kinda puts loads and loads of victims in a really difficult situation that just doesn’t happen with other crimes

      The movie is supposed to show just how differently society treats rape victims and sexual offenders. Victims are expected to just “move on”, while the offenders ACTUALLY get to move on since they’re “promising young [men]”. So that’s the point of the title. To show the irony of such a statement; that quote came from a judge referring to a college boy who faced no consequences after raping someone. A “promising young man”. The victim, on the other hand, is seen as an inconvenience, dramatic, psychotic….

    When I hear stuff like "you'll ruin his life." All I feel is rage, because he ruined my life. Why is his life so important? Why do I get ptsd attack while he could be out doing what he did to me to someone else?
    Everything point you made is spot on and its ridiculous that we still have to fight so hard to be heard.

    One of the things that I deeply love about this movie is that aside from the audio [where you only really hear commentary] they don’t show the act of rape, too many movies and shows show it, for what reason? It’s implied, to me it’s always been too triggering, no one wants to see that.
    I don’t even think that they mentioned the word, but we all know exactly what they’re talking about.
    There’s no gore but there are a lot of scenes that make you uncomfortable, and they’re more impactful, they stay in your mind and make you feel things, and that’s where the line between art and reality gets blurred cause this happens so much in reality and you’re angry cause there is no justice for it. The ending makes that feeling even more bittersweet cause 2 people lost their lives THEN their rapist/killer got arrested.

      Well said, I agree. There are way too many shows/films that have r*pe scenes just for shock value, and it's disgusting. Game of Thrones is exceptionally infamous for it. (I also got into a "debate" with someone who didn't think Danaerys was r*ped...Tell me you're a r*pist without telling me).

    Also I want to add that I loved how they gave the detective or lawyer or whoever that guy was a redemption by making him the one she trusted to make sure that they were arrested and justice was achieved at the end

    I may be thinking too much into it but I think throughout the film they depicted Cassie has the virgin Mary from the Christianity religion like some of the shots of her would depict a halo around her head (like at 14:22 in this video) or when she had visited Jordan and he was crying in her lap kinda similar to the mary statue depiction. Overall just very pretty shots throughout the movie

    The part of the guy getting taken in for murder just made me angry when first watching it. Even Cass knew that the only way she would get her justice, was if the crime was "bigger" in the eyes of the law. They don't care about rape in that way. The fact that he wouldn't have gone behind bars otherwise made me so overwhelmingly angry.

    As sad and frustrating the ending might be, I think it was truly the only option. It's even somewhat foreshaddowed when Nina's mom and Cassie talk, that seeking revenge wasn't good for her. And if that hadn't happened, Al would probably get off scotch free, so at least he got arrested for sure after all (and if it all failed, he will always be the dude who got arrested at his wedding and charged with murder, so tht's career ending for sure)

    the role of law enforcement in this movie is quite interesting, like you said. they are shown to be incompetentant when prosecuting nina's sexual assault and investigating cassie's murder. however, at the end, they're shown to be an effective tool, as long as you have enough evidence. obviously rapists must be held accountable, but it's hard to show that in media without effectively endorsing the criminal justice system. i think this movie tried to walk that difficult line

      One thing I saw that the director said was she used actors from early 2000s shows or who normally play charming likeable characters like Adam Brody, Max Greenfield, Chris Lowell, and Bo Burnham and cast them as these horrible guys which I thought was super interesting and made the plot twist with Bo’s character more unexpected. Also the films use of bright pastel colours despite the dark themes is fantastic and makes the ending that much more impactful in my opinion

    You made me cry like three times during this commentary. Such powerful words, coming from a young woman who's so eloquent, and the fact that all of us girls/women can truly RELATE to the injustices that not only happen in this movie, but that happen to all of us on such a regular basis, just made me choked up. Sometimes I get filled with so much sadness and anger that we just have to submit to the fact that, yeah this is the world we live in, and we'll be long gone before future generations can see true change and can find some peace of mind in a hopefully non-misogynistic society someday, but there's so many people SO dense, such as those who always prioritize the oppressors commodities instead of siding with the victims that it seems too impossible. It's just gross. I often try not to think too much about it, because if I do I'm just in a constant state of rage; there's little that I can do by myself to change this situation in the near future, but GOD does it make me furious when I see injustices like the ones in this film and of greater or smaller scale... Honestly we all know it's not all men (quit it with feeling insulted if you're a decent human being, do us all a favor save both of us some time!!) but enough of you to have younger and maybe even older generations sick and tired of your bullshit to simply not shut up about it ever again. Fuck that and fuck your sexism.

    *spoilers*
    honestly i feel like this was the only way this movie could've ended. cassie had been grieving for seven years, no one could even acknowledge ninas existence aside from her. she was never going to get the closure she wanted because no one wanted to acknowledge that nina was a victim. it kind of makes me happy that they're together again. the necklaces made me cry so much....
    the way we don't see cassies face once she's died also shows how victims are stripped of their identity. i know some people didn't like the ending but i like that it wasn't a "true" rape revenge film. i'm so glad we didn't ever see what happened to nina, because showing something so gruesome and violent will never make sense to me, even if it's just simulated. i like that cassie chose to mentally attack all of those people instead of killing them. putting them through those things so they have to re-live it over and over in their mind. it makes me sad that she knew she probably wouldn't leave the bachelor party alive, but also realistic. maybe she knew the only way the police would even blink twice was if there was a murder involved. without cassies murder, nina would never receive any justice.

    Most of the times I skip monologues in movies due to the fact that I am just excited to get haha funny reactions... I couldn't bring myself to skip a single word you spoke. This movie shattered me into tiny little pieces but I truly believe that this movie deserves more credit worldwide. I have even met men that barge into my conversations with women about date rape trying to excuse men... Once I asked a man, "Have you ever raped anyone," and he said, "It's not that simple." This entire world is so fucked. I am so happy to have ever subscribed to you. To have someone with a platform display empathy and human kindness is a blessing and I hope people watch you and learn. All we can try to do on this planet is love each other and be kind. Thank you Trin.

    The fact that her name is Cassandra (cursed to tell the truth that no one believes) and all the little details of this movie (her dressing in 90s fashion, her house decked in 80s furniture, literally stuck in time when everyone else moved on) and how each and every one of the bad guys are commedy actors, people you normally like, people you would never see as a bad person, is quite clever.
    Also, the subtle ways the "good" men in the story invalidate Cassie. The Lawyer invades her personal space (watch the scene again, but only watch Cassie), he touches her and puts all the burden of HIS pain on HER to resolve. Her dad, he's in front of the police, with his wife literally saying "our daughter is in danger, this is not normal", but he dismisses her, dismisses her concern because Cassie is damaged and crazy, so of course his view is more important than his wife's. The police go to interrogate the ex boyfriend and they open with the Dad's version of events, not the Mom's. It's all really subtle and in the whole emotional rollercoaster of the movie you don't see it at first, but it's not just bad guys who are doing this, it's also the good ones. This movie deserves an Oscar, seriously.
