fun fact, as someone who has the dvd of princess diaries 2, i can tell you from watching the behind the scenes a million times over that julie andrews actually did do that mattress scene herself. she did it in one take, which is why everyone freaks out afterwards. and her singing in this movie is special too bc she stopped singing for many years bc of a botched surgery on her vocal cords. they had to beg her to sing again, bc she hadn't done so in so many years. she was super nervous about this too. but she sounds amazing !

i totally agree that the stereotype that straight hair is prettier than curlier hair was extremely harmful to self esteems. i straightened my hair from the 4th grade to 7th grade because i was the only black girl in my grade...now curly hair is something that is envied🤷🏽♀️

Julie Andrews' singing in the second film makes me so emotional because it was the first time she was singing on-screen after her vocals were messed up by surgery. And its a great song.
I hated my curly hair for years and its taken lockdown for me to realise that I don't need to straighten it all the time. I literally felt that my hair was never considered pretty in the eyes of media so I had to conform. So interesting that Trin picked up on this.

The point you brought up about the curly hair. I'm an asian with curly hair and my whole life I was taught that it was dirty and messy so I straightened it everyday. I absolutely hated it I wished I could have straight silky hair like the rest of my classmates. These movies really didnt help with this either. When I watched this I thought "so my curly hair IS dirty even in the west". I'm glad I've gotten over that phase in my life and can now love my curls.

Im so glad she touched on the curly to straight hair being better narrative. As a black boy who grew up in the uk where majority of the people are white, seeing boys at school with straight hair really left the impression that my hair wasn’t deemed as “cool” or made me look attractive in a sense which ended up with me in my teens with really short hair so that it was straight, i really forced myself to love the haircut because there was really anyone advocating or anything about curly hair still looking good... idk why but i had to get that off my chesy

You know what also bugged me, it like stopped reacting to curly hair physics. Like any person with curly hair knows what happens when you chill in humidity or you get caught in the rain, it starts to either frizz or starts to go back to its curly state. But in the movie, no matter the weather it was just always perfectly straight

The only thing that is “irking” me about this is the calling out of the orphan thing but not acknowledging the part where immediately after the parade, Mia is like. Let’s get rid of a royal palace and use it as a better orphanage/children’s center space. Like do I disagree with anything you said about it not negating the bad things that the monarchy does, but like at least that moment was an “honest” moment to be better.
